Re: OOTS #1015 - The Discussion Thread
Wait, we are still discussing overcoming the vampire DR with favored enemy? Hasn't that train left the station already?
Vampires have a DR vulnerable to *magic* *blunt* damage. Guess what weapon the vampire is wielding? Exactly...Last edited by Zwiebelchen; 2015-12-17 at 04:31 AM.

Re: OOTS #1015 - The Discussion Thread
Stupid question regarding the ring of feather fall:
As discussed earlier in thread it activates automatically after a fall of five feet, then lasts for sixty seconds. As discussed, this isn't enough time to save someone who's falling off a really high mountain.
BUT .... I've heard that it also has unlimited usage.
So here's one way it could be used, and allow the user to survive a fall such as that Belkar experienced;
1) User is kicked off the mountain.
2) User falls five feet. The ring activates.
3) The user falls for ((however many levels the ring's maker was) * 6 seconds) at a greatly reduced speed.
4) After that time, the effect terminates and the wearer resumes the fall with normal acceleration.
5) After ANOTHER five feet, the effect kicks in again.
6) Repeat steps one through five until landing occurs.
If the ring works in this fashion, a user could fall from the stratosphere and take no serious harm. In fact, it would be better than knowing the spell, since you wouldn't have to prepare and cast it, thus saving a spell slot.
Is that the way it's supposed to work?

Re: OOTS #1015 - The Discussion Thread
No, it would just reactivate every 5 feet, staying active until the wearer lands. Falling at a greatly reduced speed is still falling. Step 4 would not happen, there is no reason for the effect to terminate after 60 feet, it doesn't have to wear off before the ring is activated again.

Re: OOTS #1015 - The Discussion Thread
That's how I always use it. Because magical items usually default to the lowest possible caster level, and having a ring that only stops you for 60' of a fall forever isn't all that useful. The only reason you need a Ring of Feather Falling isn't for the short falls, its for the long ones that would kill you. So it's either a pretty cheap but useless item or a pretty cheap and very useful item depending on your interpretation.

Re: OOTS #1015 - The Discussion Thread
I understand, and I am saying that's wrong. It is basically continually on, but it only triggers if the fall is more than 5 feet. Being a truly continuous effect item (which is common, especially for magic rings) might be inconvenient for an adventurer.

Re: OOTS #1015 - The Discussion Thread
Thanks korvin, littlebum , and Rodney! I have been educated. I was always one for the emergency scroll of teleport, but that's not useful if your unconscious, but the ring -- since it reactivates every few steps and has unlimited usage -- is actually a pretty neat contingency item.

Re: OOTS #1015 - The Discussion Thread
It has been posted before but people seem to be missing it (although the rest of your post was on something different so you can probably ignore this). Falling off a mountain is not the same as falling off a cliff. To fall off a mountain and fall all the way to the bottom you need a lot of sideways momentum, even with your ring of feather fall extending the duration of your fall. DnD doesn't really model momentum at all (although arguments can be made for things like charge/shield bash/lances yada yada yada). Belkar getting thrown off isn't going to send him all the way to the bottom just 400-600 feet (made up numbers) vertically depending on how steep the mountain is at that point. Still enough to go splat without the ring, but a distance that is recoverable within the time frame of the Gods moot.

Re: OOTS #1015 - The Discussion Thread
Ohh, you are right. Damnit, but at least I know where I got it from, cause I had been reading up on Lich and vampire creature features after some time spent in the geekery thread (this thread is pure brilliant evil btw).
Well, there goes my theory that Belkar is trying to disarm the vampire (followed by a hilarious weapon shrinkage joke) to beat him with his own weapon.Last edited by Zwiebelchen; 2015-12-18 at 05:30 AM.

So why did Niu have a spikey ball when expecting skeletons? I thought the joke was that this was the ideal weapon for liches.

That is a morningstar, it does piercing and bludgeoning damage. Note that she also has a warhammer and holy water.
I think Landeraxe was implying that the staff Durkula had in the gathering isn't Malack's staff, and he lent the real one to one of the new vampires so they could fast vamp the Creed during the voting.
