    I thought the joke was that the Empire of Blood is so terrible and unjust that a relatively quick death sentence is the best outcome you can expect.

    Yeah, that was my interpretation as well, though it’s more than possible that plenty of Good-aligned citizens in Tarquin’s realm actively look forward to death and would, unlike Roy, actually be pleased to hear that they’d be in heaven within the week. (Mostly the ones without families to support, presumably.)

    I guess I don't really see what you're talking about as part of that with this strip. It's not really fourth wall-breaking so much as the idea Rich picks a specific classification like that for each character that determines our expectations for them.
