Belkar's awareness of Durkon's sacrifice, and the subsequent obligation he feels toward him (no matter how hard he denies it), has been my favorite step in his development.

Feelings are tricky. You can't exactly separate the one you want from the ones you don't.

Loving Belkar's development in this book.

Hmm. I think Belkar's prophesy is coming true soon. He's shown the right amount of character growth and empathy.

I see Belkar's complaining about martyrdom being stupid - I wonder if that's how he'll end up going?

Belkar's really good at faking character growth. I'd totally buy it.

I cannot reiterate enough just how much I'm loving Belkar's character development. It's especially fantastic just how conflicted he's feeling about it all.

Of course, this is usually where the "cop on the last day of the job" moment in films happens...

It's inevitable, but, MAN, am I ever not looking forward to seeing the little bastard go.

He's changed a lot since his fever dream. This will be fascinating to watch as it unfolds.

Belkar has gone from faking character growth to faking not having character growth.

The Giant says: Yes, I am aware TV Tropes exists as a website. ... No, I have never decided to do something in the comic because it was listed on TV Tropes. I don't use it as a checklist for ideas ... and I have never intentionally referenced it in any way.

My first thought was Belkar is totally gonna be a martyr. My second thought was Belkar is gonna go in that direction, escape the death part, gloat about how he doesn't need to, and then get killed very shortly afterwards anyway.

Whoever taught him that was a good idea?!?
Once upon a time there were a sergeant and a sapper...

See Belkar, you were a nothing but a jackass to your coworker while he was nothing but kind but now he has his revenge by making you all conflicted about your life choices.
    *diabolical laughter*.

I love elkar's development in general and this strip in particular. You're almost there Belkar. Soon Durkon will be up and going again and you'll feel all fuzzy and warm inside and you'll realize what those do-gooders are always talking about.

Join Belkar for a luxury cruise up the river Denial...

This was an endless stream of quotable quotes... if I picked my favorites I'd be reprinting most of the strip, so I'll settle for

    "Stupid hairy self-sacrificing co-worker"

    and

"Screw him and the general empathy for other people he rode in on!"

EDIT: and I love Jay R's post above. Brilliantly put!

Man, so familiar. Denial, anger, confliction, all delivered at a slightly too loud volume along with an assertion that things hadn't changed.

Reminds me of when the kids suddenly discovered the opposite sex wasn't icky after all.

Poor Belkar! His "pretend" character development is becoming seriously endangered.

It's almost like he's edging towards turning a leaf. Tsk-tsk-tsk.

Keep repeating that, Mr. Bitterleaf, but change is not coming... change is here. With a (not so) high Hide check, Moving Silently through your actions and feelings, sneak attacking your beliefs. Change is a Rogue, an Epic Level one.

Each one of us, alone, is but a drop in the sea
Our powers pale compared with the great heroes
Our battles don’t hit theheadlines or shake the earth
But they are few, can’t be everywhere, and we, many
So, when the world or universe needs saving, they come
But when people needs saving, we are the ones to appear
We're underdogs, but we rise up to the challenge to be heroes.

I keep hoping the Giant will pull some clever twist out of his hat (or pen) and the Belkar I love and laugh at will continue (if in some altered form) but this strip really seems to be setting a hard lock for the prophecy coming true.

I'm rooting for some variation on Not-Belkar. After all if Human Vampire and her host can come to some meeting of the minds that requires ponchos I'm sure Belkar and Not-Belkar could come up with worse.
