Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
Discovered this show last night. Decided it was awesome sauce. A bit rough around the edges but good stuff. I only wish there was a bit more of it.

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
What you think's been tiding me over between One Piece and the weekend proper?
Actually I think RWBY might just scythe catapult past FT once I can judge it more long term. Not that FT is a terribly high bar, but remarkable all considered.
Now if only someone with some truly serious budget in America could quite grok anime as deeply.

False alarm. Oh well, I guess I'll watch through volume 1 again.Spoiler: Previous avatars

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
I've actually been trying to work out how the weapons (that don't explicitly involve magic) would be made in real life. The scythe would be pretty easy beyond the fact that it would probably take at least 2 barrels to actually have the shown functionalities (1 pointing out the handle and the other pointing out the back of the blade). The shroud is fairly straightforward as well, though it would require a very odd cloth (probably an aramid fiber material). The shotgun-gauntlets would probably actually be the most difficult, seeing as you would probably lose some skin shooting forward and the only conceivable way to give punches more force is shooting backwards.

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
They require tolerances and material science way beyond what we have now (or at least, beyond what's commercially available), otherwise anything like it will break in 1-2 melee hits, especially Ruby's scythe and Pyrrha's spear.
What's more curious to me is how some characters (i.e. Yang) decide whether the shot gives you enough momentum to rocket jump, or you barely feel it to the point where it doesn't knock your fist back. Ruby, on the other hand, quite obviously plants her scythe down in the ground when she's shooting in scythe mode unless she wants to rocket jump. I carbine mode, the shots don't seem to have any noticeable recoil.

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
I know that one!
EDIT: I also have no intention of actually making these. I only really care about if it could work if we had the tech (like the shotgun gauntlets wouldn't ).
EDIT2: I suppose her bulletproof gloves would solve the forward-shooting problem, but she still has unprotected arms. The gun-powered punches remain a no-go.Last edited by Woodzyowl; 2014-01-04 at 11:25 AM.

The real secret is when you realize that the wizard is the much more satisfying answer in the long run.
And for certain values of work sure can probably be done.

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
We've actually been over the dynamics behind Crescent Rose earlier in the thread.
The one barrel is enough. A scythe's center of gravity is somewhere within the triangle formed by the ends of the handle and the tip of the blade, meaning that shots fired parallel to the handle are at an angle to the lever arm and therefore have the tangential component necessary to aid in swinging.
Longer barrel = higher muzzle velocity = more recoil.

So apparently, people who edit Wikipedia aren't people who watch RWBY. First sentence under Plot: "The story takes place in the world of Remnant".

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
This one actually makes sense: a) longer barrel, hence higher velocity. b) more windage inside the barrel = looser fit for the bullet = lower muzzle velocity = less recoil. It would require two separate barrels (i.e. only the second one is a tight fit), but makes sense in a way.
I'm still more curious about Yang.
Anytime someone tries to bring real-world physics into a RWBY discussion, Blake kills them in self defense.

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
Umm I'm not sure that's not quite how it works out. Most of (or all) the propellant isn't going generally going to last until the bullet exits. Plus "longer barrel = more mass" may well counterbalance it out.
Even then you'd definitely be talking something of pretty minor variation compared to the bullet used and (for all practical purposes) the positioning of the shooter and gun.
Not a clue on how that would all apply to the scythe though...Wizard....Last edited by Soras Teva Gee; 2014-01-04 at 10:05 PM.

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
The propellant burns fast, the limiting factor is how much of its energy is actually imparted to the bullet by the expanding gas. Longer barrel = more expansion before the bullet is no longer in contact with the gas.
Plus "longer barrel = more mass" may well counterbalance it out.
Aaaaaaaaaaand I just got the joke.

That's a good one.
"RWBY 3: It just works. Don't ask how."
I still think I prefer yours. Shouldn't it be Soviet Remnant, though?Last edited by Woodzyowl; 2014-01-05 at 06:27 AM.

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
Y'all keep talking about a new thread title... but this thread is way to far away. Ponythread only does it on 47 and that's still a day or two away from needing it.
Yes except that gunpowder is an explosive substance, the whole point is that it burns extremely quickly. Ergo beyond a point a longer barrel can't matter for recoil since no more force is being generated. Velocity will drop some with friction on the barrel but that's another matter
Those distances are pretty short too, a typical shotgun (according to this) will burn through it in just 18 inches.
Not that the scythe is likely to be using actual gunpowder... but we since we can't really evaluate a magical substance that's hardly matters.

Re: RWBY 2sday: Birdie, NO!!!
But when the new episode airs, this thread will explode, so it might be good to have some discussion before we speed back up. At least, that's how I understand it.
