Random Rules for a Random Banter
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.
2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.
4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.
12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.
13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.
14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.
15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.
From the end of the last thread:
- Sad music can give you the feels
- People were wondering what the heck Amiibo's were actually for
- Teddy is writing a comic
- Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, Magic and Netrunner all work better when you have someone to play with
Let the banter commence!Last edited by Peebles; 2015-02-06 at 03:47 AM.

New thread, eh?
\makes sleepy efforts at dancing
Stop apologizing, it's fine. (Just don't forget to add the previous RB to the spoiler of previous RBs), but no, you had to go get it while I was typing. Clever girl.
I am gonna crash so hard about thirty minutes ago and then stay up and do calculus and then mix up my tenses here whilst writing run-on sentences to annoy you grammar pedants.
Were I less tired, I might be slightly ashamed to note that there are a few problems where I've answered with an empty set ∅ and "too lazy". Were I not too lazy, I would add something about the time to those responses, but eh. "∅ too lazy"
Quotes from the previous thread are pending and may or may not get posted tomorrow/at all.Last edited by Amidus Drexel; 2015-02-06 at 03:53 AM.

Re: Peebles' Perfectly Pointless Popular Prattle - Random Banter #211
To answer the Amiibo question, they're figurines of Nintendo characters that can be touched on the Wii U gamepad and I think the 3DS or New 3DS to unlock bonus stuff in some games.
A set is currently being completed bit by bit of the roster of the latest Super Smash Bros game, those figurines can store data that creates an AI character who gets better the more it battles you. And there's also an upcoming set for the playable characters of Mario Party 10, and the ones compatible with it can store some data that I don't know the specifics of. In the case of double-ups, like the Smash Bros Mario Amiibo and the Mario Party Mario Amiibo, they have the same functions and are compatible with both games. Basically, they have the same chip, but a different plastic figure on the base.
Problem is, some are hard to come by and scalpers are rampant with Amiibos. So anyone who doesn't basically camp out in front of stores is out of luck. Unless they want to pay triple the retail price for each figure (ones like Rosalina, Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man and Villager are ludicrously expensive on places like Amazon and Ebay).Last edited by Skeppio; 2015-02-06 at 04:12 AM.

I got a flashback to Bob Peck in Jurassic Park then. Clever girl....whoomph, gets eaten by dinosaur. We Velociraptors hunt in packs.
I find it best to apologise for things in advance, because when someone calls me out on stuff I'm too stubborn to admit it.
I am gonna crash so hard about thirty minutes ago and then stay up and do calculus and then mix up my tenses here whilst writing run-on sentences to annoy you grammar pedants.
Yeah, the scalpers have really been out in force on Amiibos. Nintendo creating artificial scarcity with limited supply hasn't helped either. I can't help but feel that by buying one just for aesthetics I'm denying someone who would make full use of it.

Just calling it as I see it. Maybe artificial scarcity is too strong a term, but I do think that, given how popular the things were clearly going to be, they could have made a few more.

I'm reminded of Adam Savage saying "everything is fine... I feel completely normal now" in a monotone voice immediately before getting his blood drawn, all on camera. They were testing the myth that people who donate blood are implanted with mind-control microchips by the government. Or something like that, I don't really remember.

I use braces (also known as "curly brackets") to indicate sarcasm. If there are none present, I probably believe what I am saying; should it turn out to be inaccurate trivia, please tell me rather than trying to play along with an apparent joke I don't know I'm making.

Re: Peebles' Perfectly Pointless Popular Prattle - Random Banter #211
Eh, not particularly. It's technically accurate.
Small production runs are pretty much standard practice when it comes to 'collectables'. For anyone old enough to remember beanie babies, the rarer ones of those were not rare because they were harder to produce. Hell, deliberately creating rarity is a good chunk of Magic: The Gathering's standard operating procedure.
Also, the fact that they're producing new lines does seem to indicate that this prbably isn't due to a lack of plastic on Nintendo*'s part. Dedicated molds and production equipment possibly; but not plastic.

Re: Peebles' Perfectly Pointless Popular Prattle - Random Banter #211
Didn't Nintendo start out as trading card company, way back when? Thought I heard that somewhere.
It does make good sense to create a 'sought after' vibe for collectibles, as you say, that's why some old magic cards are worth five figures now. If you're mad enough to spend that kind of money on a little slip of cardboard, anyway.
Thing is, are they going for the collectible approach, or are they going for a Skylanders copy where people actually care about the characters? Trying to go for both just gets gamers annoyed that they can't get the new character or game mode that they want because the 'key' isn't available.

Re: Peebles' Perfectly Pointless Popular Prattle - Random Banter #211
Don't forget that they don't work for both games at once. If you use it on say mario party 10, the minute you use it on super smash, it deletes the data of the other, so that AI would get reset. In otherwords, have 2 if you'll use it for 2 games.
I'm fairly certain that's what they did with the original Wii - they only sent 4 per shipment per week, so it was always difficult to get a wii, for like the first year. I know, I tried. Every week. For about 5 months before I finally got one.Last edited by TheWombatOfDoom; 2015-02-06 at 07:27 AM.

Alright, I'm back. Sorry Amidrex and AT (and maybe Teddy) for not replying -- I've just been really busy after coming home from my vacation.
It turns out that missing two days of school makes you miss tons of classwork, tons of homework, and just generally drops your grade. I'm doing a group project with two people who don't know what they're doing, and I'm scared as hell as to the grade.
But Teddy's making a comic too now? Where can I read it?
All this comic talk is inspiring me to get back into learning how to draw...

My dorm's talent show was last night. The record was set by a quartet that sang the Song of the Lonely Mountain a cappella... the BOOK VERSION of the Song of the Lonely Mountain. (They raised $376 with their act)

Re: Peebles' Perfectly Pointless Popular Prattle - Random Banter #211
My other collegiate news is that I'm now double majoring in actuarial and computer science.

Haha nope.
Actuaries aren't economists or stockbrokers or investment fund managers. Sure, we can be, but we bring a particular skill to the table other than just taking the financial system for a ride.
Actuaries are practical statisticians and financial mathematicians focused in areas where risk is quantified financially, most obviously in the insurance industry. Hence our use of specialised tables of mortality and morbidity rates to forecast and quantify future risk.
Our skills don't necessarily tell us how to make money, just how probably not to lose money already amassed. In specialised situations.
Edit: Wow, I didn't mean for that to turn into a whole lecture. But on the upside, now everyone knows what actuaries are!
Mostly it just involves staring at a spreadsheet all day wondering why your fund buildup values aren't what you expect them to be.Last edited by Feytalist; 2015-02-06 at 10:40 AM.
Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.
From the discomfort of truth there is only one refuge and that is ignorance. I do not need to be comfortable, and I will not take refuge. I demand to *know*.
So I guess I have an internets? | And a trophy. | And a music cookie (whatever that is).

I strongly suspect this to be inaccurate. Gamers are everywhere, it's just that finding them can be difficult. Also I'm pretty sure you can play Netrunner online with OCTGN.
That said, my actual knowledge of Netrunner is limited to the fact it's a competitive card game by Fantasy Flight Games and that a kind of jokey article I read depicting "The 16 steps to LOTR LCG Addiction" included as two of said steps finally finding someone willing to play with you, and then a few steps later 'He eventually ditches you for Netrunner'."'But there's still such a lot to be done...'
YES. THERE ALWAYS IS."

I never said there weren't people who played card games, just that they aren't interested in Netrunner. There's a fair MtG contingent, and a few Yugioh players kicking around, but if there are any Netrunner players hidden away I have yet to stumble across them.
The other difficulty being that of the gaming gatherings in my general area, the main ones are either based around miniature wargames - mostly 40k - or RPGs (which I don't play), with some MtG and one or two other board/card games on the side. As such, I'm not exactly a familiar face there. So while I'm not averse to introducing people to it (I'm pretty new to them game myself), I don't particularly know anyone there in the first place.
Also I'm pretty sure you can play Netrunner online with OCTGN.

Hooray for computer science! What've you been programming recently?
My school is having a miniature talent show tonight. A friend and I are performing an original song (me on electric uke, him on electric guitar). Only problem is that we haven't actually finished writing the song. Oh well.

The Olympics used to have an associated art gallery back in Ancient Greece, fun fact. Wish it did now. We need something to replace the Parisian Salon on an international scale. But meh, there's never enough time for art.

...so I beat Grim Fandango.
The only reason I played this game to the finish is because I hoped the ending might be good, and because it was a personal gift from a friend.
How did anyone like this game? The puzzles are...the standard for the era. The plot is bare bones and flat. The film noir aspects are non existent, and we only ever once see the Land of the Living and it's weird, cut out magazine art style, which I was hyped up as being important to the game. The entire game takes place on the Day of the Dead, where the Dead can go to the world of the living, and they do...nothing with it.
So........yeah.

Weird, nearly unworkable character concept(s) for movies/games/novels/comics/whatever, somewhat fleshed-out:
Spoiler: Possible trigger warning: violence
A ghost knowingly works alongside the very person who killed him.
Spoiler: Details
There was a pair of mercenaries/assassins who always worked together, and who had never failed to kill their mark. They would kill anyone, for a price: when a super-rich enemy of theirs began to announce publicly that he would give forty percent of his fortune to anyone who could kill one of them, they immediately broke into his bunker, dispatched dozens of armed security guards, burst into the room from which he was broadcasting his demands, and had an elaborate duel to the death in front of the rolling cameras. Then, still on air, the winner demanded that the rich guy wire over the money immediately. He said he'd rather die twice over...
And the two partners, one now a ghost, were only too happy to oblige.

Re: Peebles' Perfectly Pointless Popular Prattle - Random Banter #211
Having been stricken with an insufferable cold, replete with a hideously runny nose, and having spent a few days reading tips for packing and moving lightly across the world and miscellaneous teaching tips I can't be bothered to go through the old thread. I know I'll end up quoting twenty odd people, and my head and fingers just aren't up to Quotestorming a Wall-O'-Text tonight.
So let's iust remember a really old phenomena that maybe half of you, at best, would recognise. If that. Or am I iust ioking when it comes feeling old and out of place.
It's depressing thinking of the people I used to hang out with here.
I'll be in a corner thinking about how I've become an old maid before my time, wistfully staring into the past and remarking about things like the Pirates III game down in Structured Games, or AMEN, or the RB where everyone started becoming deified.
Don't mind me, just deposit the white chocolate and tea at the door; I'll be wrapped in my crocheted blanket, sitting in my rocking chair.
Listening to K-Pop. And J-Pop. And Vietnamese radio.
Planning to take over the world.
With books.
Ia. Ia. Koorlyshtka f'taghn of older times.
Damn I'm feeling melancholy today! It's not even appropriate weather outside, but I'm doing it anyway. :pout:Last edited by CurlyKitGirl; 2015-02-06 at 05:40 PM.
