Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
From a metagame perspective...it's not for these boards maybe. I rarely see Specialist Wizards and have played D&D since first ed. It's Occam's razor here, the simplest answer is probably the right one. Tsukiko isn't a Specialist. The whole question is built on the presupposition that Wizards more often than not Specialize in OoTS world which we've seen little evidence of...if there is any evidence at all.
V's Teacher: Unknown
Eugene: I do think he's actually a specialist illusionist but I could be wrong. They do call him an Illusionist
Z: Unknown
Tsukiko: Unknown, though called a Necromancer
Sapphire Teleportation Wizard: Unknown
V: Specialist of Evocation, not called an Invoker
Blind Diviner chick (Forgot her name): They call her a Diviner but that doesn't mean she took it as her specialty.
Julia: Unknown

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
I concur with the people who've said "she's probably not a specialist."
Being a mystic theurge both suggests a desire to be able to cast all spells, and gives her tons of spell slots already.Orth Plays: Currently Baldur's Gate II

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
The only things I feel less bound by than the rules are common player trends. I promise that I never choose or don't choose options for characters based on what a typical player is likely to do in that situation. Whether something is popular or unpopular among players has no bearing on whether one of my fictional characters chooses to take it. I'm not attempting to model a D&D campaign with statistical accuracy and I don't feel bound to follow trends, probabilities, or the Internet's consensus on what are useful character options.
That being said, Tsukiko is supposed to be a necromancer, but it looks like I gave her too many schools. Oh well. I guess she breaks the rules.Rich Burlew

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
Na. Just retcon your intentions on her wizard side.
Wizards make poor necromancers. Clerics do a better job of it. Fortunately for Tsukiko, she's both a wizard and a cleric. So maybe she's a necromancer on the Cleric side of her Theurge, and kept things open on the wizard side!
Alternately, there are non-core (and non-SRD so you can't mention them in a comic) options to open up a banned school to a specialist wizard. (I believe they're in Lost Empires of Faerun, but are hardly setting specific.) I have no trouble mentally handwaving away a specialist wizard casting from one-too-many schools.

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
As I mentioned earlier, the only Illusion school spell Tsukiko has used is Invisibility, and it's entirely possible for her to have gotten that through the Trickery Domain. She hasn't used any abjuration spells at all, either.
So, you know...retcons are available.Last edited by NeoSeraphi; 2011-08-14 at 10:50 AM.

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
Surely if she wanted to be the best Necromancer she could be she'd be more likely to go with Cleric/Death Domain and be a generalist wizard, rather than a Cleric/Trickery Domain and Necromancer wizard? As somebody said up above, Clerics are rather better at the necro stuff than wizards are anyway!

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
Technically, we never saw her cast flight spells--she could be flying due to a magic item or because someone else cast it on her. Or she could somehow have divination barred and planned to use divination from her divine half.
Or we can retroactively pretend some of the arcane spells we saw her cast were actually divine. Unfortunately, most of the arcane spells we've seen her cast would require a domain such as Travel and Trickery (as discussed earlier), neither of which seem particularly in-character (well, maybe Trickery).
I'm going to go with magic item as the simplest solution. Everyone in the anti-magic prison is kept with the clothes they were arrested with, so she could have had this hypothetical item all along. Even Roy's armour, which we know from V's True Seeing is magical, was not confiscated.
Tsukiko: Unknown, though called a Necromancer
Also, WaXPs lists Eugene as illusionist and Julia as just "wizard."Last edited by Gift Jeraff; 2011-08-14 at 11:49 AM.

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
Well, she can't actually use scrolls or wands to use those spells, so any magic item would need to cast the spell for her.

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
And thank Thor for that. OotS wouldn't be very entertaining if it were about the exploits of optimized characters.
Minor point, but she used her darker aura when casting invisibility. When she uses that color, I believe it signifies she's casting an arcane spell, while she uses light blue for divine spells.Avatar by A Rainy Knight

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
As I mentioned before, quoting the Giant, she worships all 12 Southern Gods as a group, like all Southern Clerics. Guess that's why the guy Redcloak beats in a cleric duel was the High Priest of the 12 Gods, and not say the High Priest of the Dragon. http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0456.html
Speaking of the man himself, he has now come right out and answered this question, so I think we are more or less done here.Last edited by OrzhvoPatriarch; 2011-08-14 at 01:22 PM.

Re: Tsukiko's Prohibited Schools?
While I'm pretty sure a character of Roy's level will have magic armour, I don't think that strip proves it. The colours of everything the Arcane Sight beam crosses get weirded out, including Roy's chin and the desert sands themselves, neither of which I would suggest are magical!
