Animals of the Americas: A Library of Uncommon Creatures

Animals of the Americas

Lately I've been doing a lot of work on a homebrewed alt-America setting (Crossroads: The New World, if you're curious), and I've discovered that the Monster Manual is actually pretty Eurocentric when you get right down to it. I've been keeping track of stats I find for North and South American animals, and it occurred to me that this might make a useful resource for others as well, so I'm posting it here for your perusal and entertainment.

The organization of these creatures is not scientific; I've tried to group them into categories that regular people would think of when they consider what kind of creature they need for a specific purpose. And in any case, you can always just search the list with Ctrl+F if you can't find a creature where you thought it should be.

Some of these beasties may already have stats which I just haven’t found yet, somewhere out there. If you know of any I've missed, let me know and I'll link to 'em. And feel free to post your own homebrewed stats for any animal that's not already on the list, or better stats for something we've already got - I'll add them to the list too, as soon as I'm able!

A lot of these animals are missing from the Monster Manual not because the MM is Eurocentric, but simply because their stats are irrelevant. The Monster Manual will only have stats for things that might need them, which mostly means things the players might fight against. Small, ordinarily-harmless animals like cats, bats, and ravens are included only for the sake of being wizards' familiars. But an animal that's too small to put up any significant fight and isn't on the familiar list can just be ignored, as far as the rules are concerned (of course, you're free to describe a scene as including them, but you don't need rules for that).

Constrictor and viper are both in the srd.

Hairy spider from Underdark makes a decent tarantula.

Horned Lizard and Vulture are in Sandstorm.

Megalodon is in MM2.

Swan is in BoED under Swanmay.

A few of these animals are mentioned as having identical stats to other animals, such as Parrot, Puffin, and Dove using Raven stats

Since you went to the bother of listing whales and dolphins/porpoises/etc. as separate things, why do you have the Orca listed under whales when it's a member of the Delphinidae family, which includes multiple dolphin species like the common bottlenose?

I ran into this Euro-based problem when I was running a "Wild West" inspired campaign. The best solution was actually in the monster manual: just copy stats from animals that are close enough.

Jackal (Sandstorm) = Coyote
Dire Horse = Mustang
Deer = Deer

I realize that, in reality, these are very different animals, but for the purposes of gameplay it seems like splitting hairs.

Thanks for letting me know! I don't have access to the PDFs right now, but I'll look 'em up and include the page-numbers later.

I was aware that a lot of stats can be substituted for others (and I've done that with a few of these creatures), but I was hoping that someone out there would have stats for these specific creatures. Which I feel is usually better than substituting something close. (As any ornithologist can tell you, puffins, parrots, and doves are all wildly^{har dee har har} different birds.)

Excellent. Thank you! Salmon are extremely important to Pacific Northwestern fishing communities (i.e., pretty much all Pacific Northwestern communities), so any adventure that involves overland travel in Fusang or Tuniitaq will probably make use of these stats.

Meh, I didn't feel like being quite that scientific about it. The purpose of the list is to give everyone a place to find these things. It might have been more efficient to group them by region/habitat, but I thought that I could minimize overlap by organizing them into families instead.

Thanks for mentioning them, but Squish is right, this is just for mundane animals. Whatever monster stats we have are included in the entries for each region. Feel free to contribute your own monster stats if you want to homebrew them, but since Thunderbirds have such significance to our setting, and Sasquatches might be a playable race, the thread is probably gonna want to vote on our own stats for those two particular beasties.

(Actually, someone [don't remember who exactly] said something a while ago about having "cool plans" for the Sasquatches, and is probably just waiting 'til we get to Fusang to post them.)

Mainly this list was assembled to overcome the challenge of how one even represents something like a salmon's leap, or a horned lizard's ability to shoot blood from its eyes. Once the animals are all in one easy-to-find location, people can modify them as they see fit (make 'em into dire animals, apply templates, use them as familiars, etc.). After all, how are you supposed to design a creature that's half anteater and half prehensile-tailed porcupine if you don't have any idea how tough or strong either of those creatures are?

Plus, I figured that a lot of adventures in Crossroads: The New World are going to involve hunting and catching these animals. The fur trade was probably the single biggest incentive for the French to set up colonies in Canada, so stats for beavers, minks, and ermines are going to be not only important, but essential to many campaigns. The number of pelts you can catch will determine how long your trip will take, how much of your limited provisions you'll use up, and the size of your reward upon returning to the trading post.

Well, if we add mythical creatures, this list is gonna get a lot longer. Plus, these are "Animals of the Americas", not "Magical Beasts and Monsters of the Americas". By assembling a list of mundane, nonmagical creatures, we've got a basis for comparison when we figure out what kind of stats we want to give certain monsters, and a list of base creatures to which we can apply various templates. (How can you decide how tough a dire buffalo should be if you don't have any idea how tough a real buffalo is in the first place?)

We're definitely going to assemble a list of monsters from North and South American folklore: the plan is for Playgrounders to make suggestions in the main thread for monsters that deserve inclusion in each region, so players and DMs can find each monster in the entry for the region it would inhabit. Then, people can either seek out stats for the monsters we've listed and post links to them, or homebrew their own stats for the monsters and put them in the thread for commenting.

Edit: Well actually, it'd probably make the most sense to build each monster in its own separate thread in the Homebrewing forum, then link to the main thread once it's ready. That way, anyone can see and comment on the stats and check for balance issues, not just those who regularly read the main thread.

Well, the list was designed for a setting that's based on mid-1700s' America, so chickens would be well established the the farms of both Fusang and Columbia. So I figured I'd leave 'em on the list, since someone might have a use for them, and it's better to have more information than not-quite-enough.

Actually, I should probably add horses to the list, since they're animals, they're common in North America (if not native to it), and the players will want to look them up at some point.

Actually, I should probably add horses to the list, since they're animals, they're common in North America (if not native to it), and the players will want to look them up at some point.

Hmm, good point. I thought I remembered something like that, but I haven't yet been able to find stats for prehistoric horses, so I figured I'd just skip 'em. Unless you know what their stat block would look like?

Also, there don't appear to be any different treatments of Chinese horses versus European ones, so I thought about substituting "Horse, Light" stats for the Chinese breeds and "Horse, Heavy" for European ones, but I'm not sure this is really sufficient to express the differences between them. Light Horses don't have a bite attack, which Chinese warhorses did (I think?). Plus, my friend (who's something of a Chinese history buff) tells me that Chinese warhorses were smaller, lighter, and faster than European horses. They couldn't pull or carry as much weight, but their speed and maneuverability made up for that. The Light Horse is no faster than the Heavy Horse, according to the official stats, so I think the only solution here is that we'll have to homebrew our own. Keep your eyes peeled!

Edit: After looking a little more closely at the base stats for Heavy and Light horses in the Horse Breed Templates, the above differences are actually reflected in those stat blocks. I just looked at the templates to make sure they were OK, and didn't give sufficient attention to the base creatures.

American horses as of 13 kya were essentially the same as the lighter species of modern horse. Go back far enough, and their distant ancestor, eohippus, was the size of a fox. But for the entire period in which humans have been in the Americas, you're basically looking at "horse, light riding" as the native animal for D&D stats.

This seems like a nice project, but to be fair, I'd double check the range of the animals in Wikipedia before listing them, just to be sure. From a glance, I could find two that are mislisted:

- The Megatherium was never found in the North. The Eremotherium, another giant sloth, was to be found there, but the Megatherium was native to the South.

- The Aurochs was never found in the Americas.

Furthermore, I think that you're missing a critically important prehistoric animal: the Terror Bird! Yep, Chocobos were a thing in South American past. But seriously here, these would benefit a lot from stat blocks, since they don't resemble any extant animal species, both in the real world and in the Monster Manuals.

And since you're being encyclopedical here, don't forget to add the Black Caiman. It is the largest predator in the Amazon ecosystem, and most probably in the Americas as a whole. It can probably be modeled as a huge Crocodile.

Thanks for reminding me about Terror Birds (I can't believe I forgot them!), and for the links to the lists of Pleistocene megafauna. Since there are so many of them, and they don't belong in most campaigns set anywhere near the modern era, I've given them their own separate sections within each list.

Okay, I've added a section on Dire Creatures/Dire Animals, since they're probably more likely to be used in actual combat scenarios than most of the animals I've listed here.

I tried to use official Pathfinder stats wherever possible, but I may have missed a few; let me know if you spot any of them.

Just tossing this out, the Xolo isn't only a toy breed, they use the same name for the larger breed as well, which would probably use standard dog stats.

Seriously though, this is coming along really well. I forgot about it tbh. I think I saw it once when you first mentioned it months ago.

I think that I've gotten all the official Pathfinder stats in place now. I'll go over it again, but I think that's all of 'em.

Does anyone know a simple way to calculate/estimate CMB and CMD for 3.5 creatures?
