Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Okay, one more question: Can the creature control other creatures larger than itself? (Such as inside of another monster directing it's actions). The creature would still have to find a way inside of a host, but could it inhabit a larger creature?
In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter - bitter", he answered,
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I know I stated that my last question would be my last, and therefore I accept the risk that my head will be vorpalized if you so please. If a creature is distantly related to another (Like the relation between a Badger or a Weasel, excpt a lot more), but mechanically is very different (Difference between a Grandfather clock and an Atomic Clock), would it still be viable for this contest?

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
As long as its a completely new creature there shouldn't be a problem. I mean, like, feel free to make a new kind of inevitable, its just gotta be different than the others.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
The nightleech brings up a limitation of the RAW that I have had in the back of my head. This has probably been discussed to death in some other part of the forums but...
It needs to specify that it can "Grapple" creatures no matter how large (there is a size class difference) but that the creature "grappled" is not restrained in its actions like a normal grapple, (still threatens, etc etc).[Public Service Announcement]P.E.A.C.H stands for Please Examine And Critique Honestly[/Public Service Announcement]

Why do you have to hurry? You still had two weeks left at the time of your post.
Anyways, I'm also going to give out a 'Tribble's Choice Award' each month for what it's worth.

Any commentary or constructive criticism on the Oneiroi is appreciated. I want to have it all spiffy before I post it on the entry thread.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
In the competition rules it is stated that one entry per user is allowed. What about different variants of the same entry? Like overland, aquatic and avian variant. Or something like hags (green hag, sea hag, annis hag). Would such entry be disqualified?

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
>>>Well, I haven't gotten the chance to get back here since the last monster competition I entered. I finally swung by yesterday (Tuesday) morning, saw the competition, and decided to enter (I speak very technically when I say "yesterday;" it was a little after 12 AM ). So, I worked on this creature with most of the time I was able to scrape together across the past two days and was able to make the deadline!
Enter: The Träumen
>>>I'll admit that I skimped on the name a bit, I couldn't think up anything I liked while I was working on it and just went with this (hey, at least it's better than blinkdog or dragon turtle ). I'll also admit that the writing may not be as great as I would like because of the time I wrote it in. The worst part was having to go back through and italics/bold everything because it doesn't transfer from Word right into BB code (or whatever we use here... vB code?) XD.
So, anyway, all comments/criticisms are welcome as always
(How I wish forums could use tabs =/ I prefer that over doublespacing EDIT: Ooh, I thought of something to fix it )Last edited by Calver; 2007-09-19 at 09:40 PM.

Not much participation this month I noticed. Was it just the subject of the contest?
Either way, I think next month's will attract a few more folks

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Regarding the new contest, is it okay if the base concept is derived from say, a prestige class? It'll be a fairly new concept, but drawn from some other stuff which already exists.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I've decided to join this contest, and I'm about halfway through the crunch right now. So, I'm looking at the rules and I realized my entry is quite similar to your example entry. As in, it is an ooze. Mine is a ooze made of blood, however.
Just wanted to make sure this wouldn't be a problem before I went too much farther with it.“Sometimes, immersed in his books, there would come to him
the awareness of all that he did not know, of all that he had not read;
and the serenity for which he labored was shattered as he realized the
little time he had in life to read so much, to learn what he had to know.”

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Nope, not at all, though there is an undead with ooze traits called a 'bloodrot' in Heroes of Horror that is basically an ooze made of the blood and other liquids of many decomposing bodies and can do some really unpleasant stuff.
(I made the Gratuitous Gore first though, cursed Wizard pirates!)

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Holy crap, that was tiring to type up. Took the better part of 2 days, and I still don't think it's quite done, but the entire block of information is practically a wall of text.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I've entered the Skin Spiders. I hope none of my characters ever meet them in a campaign. Ever.
The CR was really hard to assign for these beasties, as the attack is so strange. I originally took a wag at 11, but after one of my players outlined some ways to defeat them, I dialed it back to 10. Not quite sure that's right.Last edited by Dove; 2007-10-04 at 01:45 AM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Flight form of the tumor should almost certainly have Good manuverablity rather than Perfect.
In other news I am going to enter something myself if I can get the energy to type it up. The catch is that it is a series of nearly identical creatures which basically vary only in size (like the basic elementals) I wanted to double check what the proceedure is for this. If I had to pick one particular size to be the entry I could do that, but I would want to list all of them for the sake of people reading the thread later to actually USE the creatures from it. And also the fact that I would REALIZE they can be various sizes should be worth 'points' to me in considering the creativity of the creature.[Public Service Announcement]P.E.A.C.H stands for Please Examine And Critique Honestly[/Public Service Announcement]

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Just a few things I noticed about your entry. For dice rolls, don't capitalize the "d". For example, it should be "2d6" instead of "2D6" as in your entry. Purely cosmetic, but just something I noticed. Also, on that note, make sure to type the amount of rolls needed, I noticed where there is only one roll to be made you just wrote "D4", instead, write "1d4" so people know the exact roll to make.
Initiative should be listed as "+1".
Your monster does not seem to have a listed armor class.
It should have a +4 attack bonus for its slam attack, as the strength bonus is used for this type of natural attack.
The full-attack slam listing as is doubles the damage for each attack. Write the normal attack, as long as you mention it can be used twice (as you did), it's fine. Your full-attack should read: "2 slams +4/-1 melee (1d6+1)." (I think...)
There is no need to say "see below" after a special attack, all special attacks are clarified similarly.
Also, as a final note, the CR seems a little high, maybe make it a 3 or so. Whatever you want though.Last edited by Vaynor; 2007-10-04 at 05:59 PM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
well, that wasn't really informative about the closeness to the theme, but is mechanically pretty helpful, I must have forgot to save some of the things I already edited that you mentioned, so I'll go do that now, thanks ~s~
Edit: Edited stuff, it has an AC of 11 which is stated, as from what I recall (probably incorrectly) the default is 10, and he only has 1 point of dex bonus, and no other bonuses cause it's medium sized, on top of that its falling to bits, giving it an ac bonus didn't seem thematically logical ~s~Last edited by Garatolla; 2007-10-04 at 07:08 PM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
You only listed the touch and flat-footed armor class. Even though for your monster it is the same thing, you need to write the regular AC out. Also, touch is without the armor bonuses, so you shouldn't have taken anything off for that, and the flat-footed should be the one with the 10. You may want to up the stats a bit, this is a very underpowered monster.
You wrote: "Armor Class: touch 10, flat-footed 11"
You should have written: "Armor Class: 11 (+1 Dex) touch 11, flat-footed 10".
EDIT: Oh, and no problem.Last edited by Vaynor; 2007-10-04 at 07:34 PM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Any recommendations on the stat improvements? I gave him the basic stat array and threw in a good few bonuses, but I've never even played dnd, just got the books (no one near me plays -_-) So I don;t have gaming experience to sit back and think "hmm, that looks a bit low compared to -insert creature here-" so I'm just jumping in the deep end and hoping folks help me fix it ~s~
