Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
I think that's Miko flying up from the hit the MITD gave her, actually.
Also, I've noticed that Tyrinar might not have been smart enough to know when to keep his mouth shut in 759, but he was observant enough to notice at least some of the things wrong with "his" kingdom - perhaps that's why his rule was shorter than the Empress of Blood's current one.Cool elan Illithid Slayer by linkele.

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
I just noticed that the guy Belkar fights in the arena in strip 780 is approriately named, according to the match order featured in strip 782, Evisceratus.
Also, from the same strip, the two gladiators from the 3rd match are named Notseenicus (because he was not seen), and the other...Offpantio? I am not a native English speaker, somebody could explain what the pun in "off pants" could be?

If it wasn't obvious yet, Offpanelo was "off panel". Panel being the individual frames of a comic. And not Elan's second cousin twice removed (in this instance meaning got killed twice before dying for good).

I assume Miko's still on the "upswing" in panel 9, and flying head-first toward us.

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
Just noticed that, despite Shojo implying that Wizard Guy would be ressurected next day (and next day was the one where Shojo was killed by Miko), we don't see him anymore, not even in the Azure fleet. One would think that, even with Shojo's demise, they would find useful to have a (at least, by our accounts) 12th level spellcaster during the Battle...
Each one of us, alone, is but a drop in the sea
Our powers pale compared with the great heroes
Our battles dont hit theheadlines or shake the earth
But they are few, cant be everywhere, and we, many
So, when the world or universe needs saving, they come
But when people needs saving, we are the ones to appear
We're underdogs, but we rise up to the challenge to be heroes.

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
After the "Teleport!" gag, we cut to the evening and Haley's and Nale's date. And Roy goes to see Shojo first thing in the morning, which is when the kingslaying happened. So I'm guessing Shojo didn't have the time to order his resurrection without the paladins noticing.
Hinjo did not know a wizard needed resurrection, so I assume that in the confusion of Shojo's death, the incoming invasion army and the Nobles leading, nobody realized that guy was missing.Forum Wisdom

I just noticed I've never really understood Belkar's "It's Pat" remark (page 2 panel 6) referring to Varsuvius. Can anyone explain it to me?

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
Old SNL skit. IT featured a character named Pat, and the jokes were based on how nobody could tell if Pat was male or female.
Pat was sometimes dating an equally androgynous person named Terry. Nope, my bad, Pat's romantic interest was Chris, who later dated Terry.Last edited by Peelee; 2018-11-05 at 04:41 PM.

It's also one of the few references Rich makes that's pretty dated. It was already almost 15 years old back then, and over 25 now.
Still, it seems fitting that it would be Belkar dropping random pop culture references.

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
Ya know, those are pretty funny. Not a bad representation, I'd say. I'm guessing ombre means shadow? That and vite are the only things I'm really able to guess there. The man who something something life than his shadow?

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
"Ombre" is indeed shadow (see related English word 'Umbra'), but "vite" is fast, not life. The Man Who Was Faster Than His Shadow, roughly (you notice he outdrew his shadow). I'd guess the dog one is the reverse.

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
"The man who shoots faster than his shadow"
"The dog dumber than his shadow".
"Ombre" is indeed shadow, however, I am afraid you confused "vite" (quick/fast) and "vie" (life).
If you don't know the Lucky Luke comic, I cannot recommend it enough.
They are written by René Goscinny (the man behind Astérix, Iznogoud and Le Petit Nicolas), except the very first ones and those after his death (obviously), so that gives you an idea of the tone and quality.
It's a western parody. One day, one american fan told Goscinny that he was amazed by the quality of his translation. It took Goscinny a moment to realize that since the artist signed "Morris" (his first name Maurice is prononced pretty much the same way), the fan had believed that Morris was an american man and the original author. Because the capture of western style was just that good. Goscinny said that man's honest mistake was the highest compliment his work ever received.
Rantanplan is a comic-relief who was popular enough to get his own spin-off. I find those "meh"-worthy personnally.
Edit: (The pictures are the back-covers, they are quite iconic 'round these parts).Last edited by Fyraltari; 2018-11-05 at 06:06 PM.

I like that bête (beast) also means "dumb". Spanish bestia is similar, although it's usually reserved for brutish brands of stupid.

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
Seconded.
Goscinny and Uderzo, are truly Gods among cartooinsts. I grew up reading Asterix, and I still regret missing going to Camp Asterix last time I went to Paris.
Back on topic, I feel unbelievably stupid realizing only now that in the entire "Elan trying to save Haley" arc, Thog has a fake orange beard with his leprechaun costume. I always thought it was some sort of decoration of the shirt of the costume.Last edited by Cicciograna; 2018-11-05 at 06:27 PM.

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
I thought it would be "man faster than his shadow," but the vite threw me. I blame French for not being Romantic enough. And maybe a tiny smidgeon of blame for my Latin days being a decade and a half ago. Mostly French's fault, though.
Also, I love Asterix! Shame that all the ones I have are in German. I take solace in my good English Tintin books.Cuthalion's art is the prettiest art of all the art. Like my avatar.

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
Amen.
I keep telling everyone that Parc Astérix is better than Disneyland, it's cheaper and there are way less queueing to do.
Life in latin is vita, though. And we turned pretty much all "-a" endings into "-e" so you were on the right track.
I thought that was a japanese thing.
Good man.

Re: Things You Never Noticed VI: The Undiscovered Detail
Yea, but they insist on speaking French which noone understands anymore.
And yea, I also regret not being able to visit the Asterix Park when I was on a trip to Euro Disneyland. And to date me horribly, we were there the year it opened (Eurodisneyland, not the Asterix Park obviously).
That people do not know Lucky Luke saddens me. There's a very good English translation available by Cinebooks or some such publisher. Though with 70ish albums and a couple each year it's going slowly and am not sure they are doing them still.
One of the things that always throws me is how good or iconic translations can be. A lot fo wordplay that doens't translate, an sometimes funnily enough translates better than the originals. Though eg in one Asterix album I was shocked to see a small Michelin man changing chariot wheels. That was actually "censored" in my translation to some small gaulish looking thing which I always thought looked oddly pasted over the comic.Last edited by snowblizz; 2018-11-06 at 06:24 AM.
