For me, that would be pretty easy: Queen. I like a lot of stuff, but Queen is the only band I've eer heard where I like all of their songs, which is amazing. Of newer stuff, probably Motion City Soundtrack, because they have amusing and occassionally insightful lyrics and a much smoother sound than a lot of today's music.

Arcade Fire, Architecture in Helsinki, Murder by Death, New Pornographers, Wolf Parade. Asking me to get any more specific than that won't get you anywhere.

I would have to say that my favourite band is Metallica, and I don't remember my reason behind it. I just have a lot of their albums and they fit my tastes right now.
In the runner-up positions are System of a Down, Megadeth, Mudvayne, Godsmack, and Disturbed.

Wow, you listen to some freaking awesome music. Almost makes up for you cheering for the maple leafs.

Almost.

I like so much, plenty from (almost) everywhere. Though I really like Punk Rock and Metal of all kinds.

As said before, my favourite band is Bad Religion, but any of ^those could easily come in second, plus more. Most likely System. Dunno.

Well, "What's your favorite..." is a cliché in almost every site with message boards and in the mood of the previous thread I started. I also like Quiet Riot and Pantera.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Defenitely. I've never heard such intensely powerful and moody songs from artists who still manages to remain versatile. Just listen to the ''Murder Ballads'' or ''Lyre of Orpheus'' albums and tell me that music is not brilliant, I dare ya. Insanely well written lyrics as well.

howdy, semi-new here.

Favourite Band? Wow, tough choice, I couldn't choose just one, so my favourites would be, in no particular order:

Clutch
Iron Maiden
Tool
Slipknot (I'm originally from Iowa, it's kind of a prerequisite)
Faith No More (well, actually anything with Mike Patton)
Primus
Aesop Rock (underground hip-hop Icon in his own right)
Lacuna Coil
and last but not least, God Forbid

Gorbash Kazdar

My favorite fluctuates, but it tends to be one of the top five (current preference shown):

1. Led Zeppelin
2. The Beatles
3. Rage Against the Machine
4. Nirvana
5. Weezer

Those five are the ones I almost always have on my playlist, and even when I get tired of one song or album, just switch to another by that band. The top 3 haven't changed or moved in quite some time (and even when I change my mind those three generally just change spots); Nirvana as almost always been 4 or 5, and the last in the list fluctuates a bit more (though Weezer has either been in the top 5 or not much outside for quite some time as well).

After this, it's a crapshoot depending on what I'm currently listening to. For example, I'm hooked on Monster Magnet right now, and about half of what I listen to currently is their stuff. Prior to that, I was on a big Yoko Kanno kick, and before then lots of Kanye West. Normally Godsmack would be around the low end of my top ten, but I over-listened to their latest album when it came out, so they're down around the 30 range currently.

I know and believe I like Muse, but I keep getting them mixed up with the Hives and Jet and a few others like that.
Lessee now... >cracks knuckles<
Cake
Rammstein
Queen (though apparently only one "best of" album, really)
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin's growing on me
Architecture in Helsinki
The Flaming Lips
Franz Ferdinand
Avalanches
Does Badly Drawn Boy count?
Chemical Brothers
Daft Punk
Gorillaz
Gerling
Machine Gun Fellacio
Modest Mouse
Dandy Warhols

I think that's about it, more or less. I usually don't like just listening to one band for an extended period of time (Gorillaz's Demon Days is a notable exception, largely I think because it tells a story)

Yes. Yes I have. Good chioce.

I don't really have favourite bands as such. But if I had to pick bands which has the most listenable songs, the list would look like:

Antony and the Johnsons
Bon Jovi ;D
Foo Fighters
JJ72
Lost Prophets (early work)
Muse
Offspring
Scissor Sisters (just getting into and they rock!)
System of a Down (early)
QUEEN

(These are the ones not mentioned earlier - I do listen and like the previously mentioned bands but if I write them again the threadf will get repetitive.)

There are a billion more but their names excape me at the mo

1. The Beatles

Love, love, love, love, love, love, all you need is love, love, love, love the Beatles. Every song on Abbey Road or Revolver is good, and most songs on their other albums are good. Too many favorite songs to list, but top is While My Guitar Gently Weeps, And Your Bird Can Sing, She Came in Through The Bathroom Window, Something

2. Relient K

Christian pop-punk band. Fairly simple guitar-playing, but it shines occasionally, and I love their lyrics. Every new album has been better than the last. Two Lefts Don't Make A Right... But Three Do is full of fun songs full of wordplay and Mmhmm has a lot of good, introspective songs. Favorite songs: Falling Out, Life After Death and Taxes, Failure to Excommunicate, Maintain Consciousness

3. Jimmy Eat World

Awesome songs. Bleed American (retitled Jimmy Eat World after 9/11) and Futures are my favorite albums. They have good lyrics, and even when about sad topics they avoid slipping into melodrama. Favorite songs: The World You Love, Kill, Get It Faster, Clarity

4. (three-way tie) Led Zeppelin

Nobody does epic better than Led Zeppelin. They have the best songs longer than 6 minutes. Led Zeppelin II and Led Zeppelin IV are my favorites. Favorite songs: Stairway to Heaven, Battle of Evermore, Hey Hey What Can I Do, Kashmir

4. Pink Floyd

Absolutely awesome. From the psychedelia of Piper at the Gates of Dawn to the paranoia of The Wall, Pink Floyd delivers quality. Also, their lyrics are utterly quotable. "You'd better watch out: There may be dogs about!" Favorite songs: Dogs, Hey You, Have A Cigar, Comfortably Numb

4. Switchfoot

Can't really think of anything to say, so albums: Nothing is Sound, Beautiful Letdown. Favorite songs: Golden, Lonely Nation, Adding to the Noise, The Setting Sun

7. The Beach Boys

Some awesome surf songs and car songs, and they have a few really good songs that are fairly deep. Favorite songs: Heroes & Villains, Good Vibrations, Help Me, Rhonda, Sloop John B. Seeing them in concert tomorrow, which should be awesome.

Ghost Warlocks' Top 5 Bands:
1) A Perfect Circle - the release of Mer de Noms changed my life and got me truly interested in music for the first time. "Judith" was like an implanted suggestion that took years to germinate and realize it's potential on my psyche. Compare with 10,000 Days by Tool.

2) Splashdown - Melissa Kaplan (not to be confused with the herpetologist of the same name) has a truly beautiful voice. Though R.I.P. Splashdown, she's now recording under Universal Hall Pass.

3) Tool - a natural extension of APC, but it took me years to explore the crossover. 10,000 Days, although not my favorite Tool album, sets the new standard for the band (and APC). In the title song 10,000 Days (Wings for Marie pt. 2), it appears that Maynard is finally coming to terms with his mother, Judith's, affliction and subsequent death - after a stroke, she suffered with partial paralysis for 27 years (roughly 10,000 days) before finally passing on.

4) Fiona Apple - All hype aside, she's got an amazing talent and wonderful, sexy voice. The release of Extraordinary Machine demonstrates the progress and growth she's made in the last few years and sets a shining example of what artistry can come out of an individual's personal struggles in coming to accept themselves and their place in the world.

5) Poe - C'mon, she recorded her second album with her brother, in their basement, following the death of her father. Haunted is a fantastic example of the beauty that can result from working through grief.

Ghost Warlock's Top 5 Albums (for comparison/contrast)
1) Mer de Noms by A Perfect Circle
2) Blueshift by Splashdown (Don't expect to find this in stores, you'll have to steal it off the internet; try Limewire.)
3) August and Everything After by Counting Crows
4) Lateralus by Tool
5) The Sickness by Disturbed

I might as well get in one the list craze. Making lists is always fun.

Top 10 Bands/Artists
1. Nirvana
2. Bob Dylan
3. The Beatles
4. Pink Floyd
5. Ani DiFranco
6. Beck
7. The Velvet Underground
8. Janis Joplin
9. Simon & Garfunkel
10. The Barenaked Ladies

Top 5 Albums
1. Abbey Road (The Beatles)
2. Unplugged in New York (Nirvana)
3. Bringing it All Back Home (Bob Dylan)
4. The Velvet Underground & Nico (The Velvet Underground)
5. Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)

Top 5 Songs
1. Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)
2. You Know You're Right (Nirvana)

3. Me & Bobby McGee (written by Kris Kristofferson but performed by Janis Joplin)
4. Sounds of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel)
5. All Along the Watchtower (The original Bob Dylan version)

So, obviously my tastes are a bit of a patchwork. I tend to gravitate towards good songwriting and (especially) powerful/intelligent lyrics, no matter what genre it technically falls into.

They are such an awesome band. I can't believe I forgot to add them to my original list.. man, I feel so dirty... so very very dirty.

Hehe, well Virgin Steele are really pretty well-known among metal fans since they're a pretty cult band :)

Favorite band? Well, I like a LOT, but if I have to pick one...
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter. Best band ever.

Yeah, they're a huge load of fun. Saw them live three times this summer (Dong Open Air, Wacken and on thier headline tour in Berlin) and I enjoyed it a lot every time. I also quite like the new album :)

I listen to a lot of different music, but mostly rock and roll. The only kind of music I really can't stand is country, especially old twangy twang country.

Listening to my music, I've decided that Journey is also up there. Maybe my #4 or so. I mean, they're not 'good' in the sense that Billy Joel or Queen is, and there music can be annoying at times, but at others it just gets in their head, and I love the lyrics.

Hmmm, I'd have to say Dragonforce. There just a really fast paced band with what I think are great lyrics. Plus, I cant seem to put their music down, I just never get board of it. My freind says that they sound like Iron Maiden, but I think only a little. You know, they kind of have that whole 80's metal thing going, but they are a new band.

The Traveling Wilburys (that's them in my avatar, all silhouetted like), and various groups/artists within three degrees of seperation from them, like Tom Petty (sometimes with Heartbreakers), Roy Orbison, George Harrison, the Beatles, Julian Lennon...then I have a few outliers, like Cat Stevens (my most recent CD purchase is An Other Cup), They Might Be Giants, and "Weird Al" Yankovic. The rest of my Ipod delves into several other bands, but only one or two songs from each. Of course, that's where you get the really weird songs...

But I digress, I guess I lost my appreciate for double (or quadruple) bass drums and heavy distortion (not to mention the occasional gorilla grunting in the mic) as I grew older. I have a few: Theatre of tragedy, Rammstein, stratovarius... No particular order.

Went on a consert with Theatre of Tragedy a ear ago last spring, because little metal comest to my town (Tromsø in Norway) and it wasn't a pleasant experience.:smalleek:

First of all, it was also a gother-night, so it looked more as a party for cross-dressing people and fetishists with dork-paint in their faces and the clothes of porn-movies or 18th century undertakers.
Second, and the one thing that ruined my evening: They had 2 guitarists (but no bass-player, they are 6 in the group) who played exactly the same boring chord-stuff, with the pianist playing some arpegios or loop-like stuff. All in all it sounded as a technoband that was backed up by distortionguitars - not realy my style of metal.

But, actually, it's kind of boring. I can also play fast, do tapping and sweeping (no, I'm not half the way that proficcient that he is, and I play on one guitar, not two), but that's NOT what makes a good melody or a good song. I prefer those who show that they can create music where atmoshpere of the song and the lyrics fit, where the story in the lyrics is ephas... emphasi... , well, underlined by melody and solo, and if it calls for technical playing, the artist should be able to do that, but he/she must also know when to play it simple.

If you are looking for fastplaying bands, check out to Angra and Elvenking

Anyone else like the bands Kalmah and Wintersun? They are both melodic death/black metal (it is hard to tell, some of their stuff screams "Death metal!' and some of it just screams)

A lot of metal heads on these boards...

What's wrong with some good 'ol pop music? Belle and Sebastian is awesome and witty (and twee). Pavement are cornerstones. Who said musicians had to take themselves seriously?

Hey, just because I really like metal doesn't mean I don't like other stuff- I really like indie rock and post rock, as well as jazz. Out of those two, metal and post rock are my favourites, which probably explains my love of post-metal (which, as you can tell, if a post rock-metal fusion).

Shadow of the Sun

Yeah, Wintersun rocks incredibly. I love the song Beyond the Dark Sun (kinda fits my name, doesn't it). Jari is pretty hot- at least he would be if he shaved his goatee (Yes, I am male).

Beyond the Dark Sun is good... I love Death and the Healing though...

Shadow of the Sun
2007-01-05, 12:04 AM
Yeah, Death and the Healing is a cool song, but it sort of doesn't fit with the other songs musically- it is slower, without the frantic tremolo picking and palm muting of the other songs on the album, and it has clean vocals. It has the same lyrical themes, but not the same musical characteristics. Even the slower songs have grunted/shouted vocals.

Also, Led Zeppelin and Nirvana.
And Jimi Hendrix.

And then a sort of floating pool of Air, Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, Mogwai, Tosca, and some others.

Thank ya! : D You're probably the first to know them acutally. Do you like artists of the similiar vein?

I like a lot of folkish or alt-country bands. I like Nick Drake, and Dylan, and the music Will Oldham makes. I love Neil Young and the Velvet Underground. I like indie rock but also "alternative" bands from the 80s, 70's and 60's. There's just so much good stuff around. I could type Mbs about the music I like and why. But forced to choose just only one band (a difficult, quasi-ridiculous proposal) I choose Throwing Muses.

I'm not a lot into Animal Collective though, it never "clicked" for me.

Belle and Sebastian, Pavement, you nailed it. Although B&S's shift in style a couple of albums back has nearly lost me.

Throwing Muses is cool too, totally different from what I excepted from an '80s band I recall.

Yeah, well, it's refreshing to have artists like Kristin Hersh who have such a unique artistic vision, even if it's just "guitar rock" in the end.

Someone mentioned other stuff I like in this thread. TMBG, ditto. Can too. Decemberists, but mostly their early stuff (this could prove controversial). I'm so into Of Montreal lately that I'm starting to see people as cartoonish drawings :) hahaha!

Pixies, of course. Sleater-Kinney! Ted_Stryker posted a very interesting list. Fugazi! Clap Your Hands are interesting but I tend to hate things that get overhyped until I can say for myself if they are worth it.

Then you mentioned Elliott Smith. He's so good that I'll stop listing names right here to make a point :)

I don't care for music that is image or attitude. I like music that is a genuine expression of individual creativity, regardless of trends, commercial potential or clear cut genres.

Elliot Smith is a beautiful artist, I moarn his death everytime I listen to his work. I really do. Have you heard his cover of 13? It truely is a pretty pretty song.

I love folk, you really should come to SD were we have tons of it. Neo/Noise/Acid/Doom/etc folk are all here. I like Jewelled Antler stuff and Flying Canyon and others like them.

Some stuff I can't put down recently are The Knife and The Mountain Goats. Oh and some Devotchka and Beruit. Repeat. Over and over. I can't get enough.

Nah, not really. General consensus among the true fans that their earlier stuff is better than Picaresque or Crane Wife, not that those aren't good albums.

It's a band I like, but I'm really not married, and to be honest, Picaresque makes me zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...Never got to finish listening it. That's why I really feel no need to try Crane Wife, I kinda know what's inside.
My cousin loves them, though. The same with the Shins. Latest record is, I don't know, such bland stuff...A couple of good songs, but nothing memorable at all.

Amotis: I loved his rendition of the Big Star classic. His choices of covers were always refreshing. He surely is missed. Today I listened to a b-side compilation and even that stuff was great...What a pity.

Folk scene in SD? Interesting. If I ever go there it would be a nice thing to check out.
I should love Mountain Goats, it's just that I've never got to listen to a lot of his stuff (something to do with my drive not reading a couple of particular backup cds). That Knife thing, I'm going to have to check that out because everybody is speaking about them, though I haven't heard a single note by them.

Another wonderful band: Ida. Probably just too good for words.

Amotis

That garage b-sides?! Me too! I was surprised too, I thought it was gonna be dirty and washed out. But it was spot on.

Yeah, folk scene here. Very cool...sometimes. But I don't wanna insult people I don't know. *coughstupidwannbeunoriginalfolkartists*

Dealing with the Mt. Goats, he's a good songwriter I think. His stuff varied a lot depending on what album you listen to. It goes from pop to punk to folk and a mix of it all, a lot.

The Knife is very good. Silent Shout (the track as well as the album) is very very good.

Ida is very good too, I agree. New York folkish bands seem to be pretty good (though you said you don't like Animal Collective). I love the harmonics of their voices more then anything and the whole mellow flowing feel to it.

FdL
2007-01-29, 11:22 PM
I'm willing to give Animal Collective another try. Just point me to anything they made that can change my mind about them.

With indie folk, though, there's a great risk of having anyone who can strum an acoustic guitar calling himself part of the scene. Self-indulgence. I mean, there's got to be a line, I guess...Not that you'd have to be Bert Jansch, or something but... :)

You're right. I tend to look for the origin of the stuff I like, but people don't. Nirvana it's kind of ok, but they're overrated. There was better music at the time, and before and after. It was just a matter of marketing.

Pixies, on the other hand, were among the originators (well, maybe a latter wave than the early eighties stuff like R.E.M., Replacements, Meat Puppets, Husker Du, SY etc) of an new, original kind of music.

Ska-Less than Jake

Old Metal-Led Zeplin

New(as in age not genre) Metal-Disturbed

Punk-Bad Religion

Pop-Punk-Green Day

Emo-Yellowcard

Honorable mention;
Pink Flyod
My Chemical Romance
Bowling for soup
The Who
David Bowie
Goldfinger

The 8th Sin

Either Sum 41 or the Beatles, with They Might Be Giants and Queen trailing right behind.

Does anyone here know a band called Dimemberment Plan? They're really good. Awesome vocalist, probably one of my fav indie ones, great guitar playing, mindblowing beats and rythmns, and really catchy songs all while done with this cool laid back ice attitude.

Yes, a really excellent band. It was a pity they broke up. Really intelligent, catchy and powerful music, the kind of stuff that is beyond genres. I love the "Emergency & I" album. My favorite song from there is "You Are Invited", it was the first song I heard from them and it hooked me up with the album which is great.
In fact I'm going to listen to it while driving my car to work tomorrow.

I adore that song too but the whole album is full of gems like that. "The City" and "Gyroscope" are awesome. "The Ice of Boston" though not on that album, is great too.

Have fun :D I was just doing that!

Either Nightwish, or Rhapsody of Fire.

Probably Nightwish.

Rock On! These'd be my second and third, with first being Dragonforce. I love songs with lots of guitar and cheesy, fantasy lyrics

Oh, Dismemberment Plan... For a moment I was totally lost there. The s threw me and I was going crazy trying to remember where I'd seen that before. In honesty I haven't heard too much of them, but I do remember when they came through several years ago.

Therion, even if Gothic Kaballah was somewhat disappointing. I'll forgive them that, due to the sheer majesty of Lemuria, Sirius B, and Secret of the Runes.

Also, honourable mentions to Nightwish, Hammerfall, Edguy, Wintersun and Dimmu Borgir.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, David Bowie, followed shortly by the Mt. Goats, Magnetic Fields (for a very minstrelesque feeling), the Decemberists (knock it all you want, but Picaresque is my favorite), Minus the Bear, the late R.L. Burnside, Deathcab for cutie, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, etc.

Currently in love with the Beatles Love album and Rarities and B-sides of Nick Cave.

RL Burnside? I though I was the few that knew him! Great bluesman, a huge surprise to find a man of the dying breed nowadays. Good choice.

Mt. Goats and TV on the Radio are both awesome as well.

So is Fdl the only one who knows Will Oldham/Bonnie "Prince" Billy/Palace?

Out of all his...personas (I guess that's what they are, his sound changes a lot from each name), I enjoy Bonnie "Prince" Billy's the most. His I See A Darkness album is perfect and what musicians should strive for. His latest album is also surprisenly good, with the first two tracks and Cursed Sleep being excellent songs. His use of a female vocalist is also spot on.

His live performances are also something out of this world. He has an uncanny ability to somehow make his songs darker/mellow/screaming in this kind of destructive manner. I really can't describe it.

Amotis, you outrank me by like 4 or 5 bard levels at least. And thanks, it's great to see other blues fans out there.

Also, your taste in music is enviable. I'm currently searching for all the bands you mentioned via the infamous myspace.

Yeah, cool list, Jewish_joke. I like DCFC, especially the first albums, I've not listened beyond Photo Album.

The photo album was great, but the one that really stole my heart was their 2003 transatlanticism, which (however mainstream) was a very personal record to me. Their latest, Plans, left me a lil disappointed, for I wasn't expecting and/or desiring such a sterile, electronic postal service sound to it.

What do you mean by what you said about Dylan?

Also, I don't listen to DM, but they are a good band. In their case it's interesting how their songwriting has trascended any genre they were said to be. The early stuff is not that good, but they've outgrown it by far.

Hard question that... Let me think... Blind Guardian (not the last 2 albums), Helloween (same there), Therion, Running Wild, Iced Earth, Gamma Ray , Savatage and Grave Digger... yep... and probably some more I forgot now! Don't ask me to choose one 'cause I can't! But anyway, as long as it's metal and good enough it's a favourite!

Well, I've noticed a lot of media lately that shows Dylan hard to understand anything he's saying when he sings lately. I was watching this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbnqbIUJcY0&mode=related&search=) and would have to agree its has become much harder to understand him.

Jewish Joke - Oh awesome! I was looking for a good radio station! Bloody thanks. Have you seen the bluesman documentary "You See Me Laughin'" ? I was sooo excited to see Burnside and a bunch of other modern players with him. The interviews were awesome and spot on. You really should see it if you haven't already.

Artega - Heh, DM is okay. They have a few good songs and Fdl is right when he says they've transended genre.

And when you provided that link I swear it was gonna be to "Like a Woman" where Dylan's wearing that gold shirt. Haha....oh man he must of been wasted out of his mind that day.

Anyway, I acutally like Dylan's mumbling incoherrent singing style. I couldn't image his songs being sung any other way. The way he vocally explores his songs every time he sings them. I've always been a Dylan fan and even when he sung clean and very folk like in his early years and off-key and exploring in his mid and now more old and dirty, I still love him. : D

Given the state of worlwide music industry/audiences, I find it refreshingly obvious that people don't understand a genius like Bob Dylan. Nice metaphor.

(I've just read and posted in the RHCP hate thread and man, is people wrong about what makes good music)
