It may be painful for them to dredge up some of those memories, but the best way they can get her to trust them is to trust her with their pasts. If she heard the whole story - and believed it - it would definitely give her second thoughts about throwing her lot in with Xykon.

I deal with idiots at the shelter sometimes. People who poke their fingers in the cages, even when it clearly says not to (One woman who got bitten said that she was "testing"), parents turning a blind eye when their little kids are poking an angry cat in the face, and then people yell at me and say that the shelter doesn't care about the animals, only about the money...Because surprise surprise, there's an adoption fee!

Guess what? The shelter's a non-profit! It costs a LOT more than the fee to run the place and pay wages and prep the animals for adoption! Gah!

this is all over the coarse of nineteen years. we only have one bird and a bunch of fish ATM.



and what are your thoughts on a breed of cat genetically endeared to produce only one kitten per litter (not per lifetime)? it would definitely keep the population low, so you wont need to put them to sleep/abandon as many of em.

I think I can see where this is going. Please continue to write, this is going to be funny. Very, very funny. If you manage to make the last ounces of my sanity cry in agony at the embarassing scenes, i'd be thankful because I'd like it to shut up once in a while and calmly let me read everything in this thread. In terms of style, it's all practice. The more you write (please do), the better you get.
The perspective strikes me as a bit confusing, but I can't grasp it. Maybe it's just me being unfamiliar with a Third-Person-Narrator that looks through one character's eyes.

On the grammatical part of the story, I have some tips for you:
- Put every direct speech into a new line lest it's spoken by the same person.
- Watch out for repetitions in words - alliterations are good for madness mantras, but don't read nice if something is told neutrally. At some points, it might be better to do a listing in a single sentence.
- Run your story through Microsoft Word or OpenOffice Writer for grammar typos such as commas or post it to a fellow cracker here in the forums to proofread it. I'd happily do that, btw :)
- Numbers below 13 are less irritating to read when they're written out.

And once he realized that - apart from not knowing who he was - she was still the same person, he'd suffer horribly, still loving her but knowing the affecion was no longer returned. Seeing what had happened to her. He'd want to help her, both because he would still love her and because it's the right thing to do, but it would be so, so hard.


Oh, and Yutrin better have a good excuse to be there unless he wants to be on the wrong side of a Smite Evil.

Do you think that Soon Kim would be able to not kill Yutrin? I'm sure that he wouldn't touch any children he had already had with Mijung--I mean, they're still Mijung's children, even if Soon thinks their origins are dubious--but Yutrin's still green and therefore labeled 'cannon fodder' in Soon's eyes.

And what about the child that belongs to Soon? It'd be kind of easy to pick out the one pure-human along with the half-breeds.

I think that one of the children would flip out and try to get between Soon and Yutrin if the sword came out, and if Mijung was there, she'd probably do the same. But they don't have much to worry about. Unless something happens between now and then, death does not exist as we understand it. (Although getting a sword stuck through you would still be really painful and debilitating. Permanently so, if no magical healing is involved. On second thought, it's best if Soon's katana stays in the scabbard. )

Do you think that Soon Kim would be able to not kill Yutrin?
Yutrin's going to be in immediate danger if Soon charges in there at full strength and righteous fury. Would Yutrin know who Soon is? He'd want to stay awy from the human, especially if he recognised him as a paladin, but I think Mijung would be keen to try and get his help. Mijung would probably convince Yutrin that they should go and talk to him, and there's no way Yutrin would let her near a potentially dangerous human on her own.


I'm sure that he wouldn't touch any children he had already had with Mijung--I mean, they're still Mijung's children, even if Soon thinks their origins are dubious--but Yutrin's still green and therefore labeled 'cannon fodder' in Soon's eyes.Best case scenario, Soon arrives and is just as ill as they were to start with, allowing Yutrin to prove some worth to Soon by nursing him back to health. Assuming that Lirian, Dorukan, Girard, and Serini are there too (it makes sense in my head), do you think they would be good at keeping Soon restrained or encouraging him to kill Yutrin? Lirian and Serini seem like the types who avoid conflict, but from what we've seen of them, it doesn't look like they have any issues at all with killing goblins, especially if you have a reason to. Girard seems like he'd have a 'Dude, not cool!' react, cranked up to a hundred. It's okay if he is angry at Soon and fights with him, but it's not okay for someone else to brainwash and shack up with Soon's wife, the woman he pined after his entire life after he thought she was unmade. I could see him being willing to help Soon in eviscerating Yutrin, had they been at full strength. (I see Dorukan having an 'Awwwwwwwkwaaaaaarrrd...' reaction and trying to distance himself from it.)

But if Yutrin nursed them back to health, I don't think any of them (except maybe Girard), Soon included, would feel comfortable just ignoring that and killing him where he stood. You don't just murder someone right after they do you a serious favor despite common sense.

And that's really all Yutrin would need at that point. It's not like Soon has power in this world--as long as he isn't trying to kill anyone, Yutrin has a slight upper hand, just from his limited knowledge of the world and from Mijung's favor.

In the mythology of this story, there are levels of gods (like Aphrodite's stronger than Fauna, but Poseidon is stronger than Aphrodite), though you can't really mess around with other people's territory, even if you're more powerful (so Poseidon may be stronger than Aphrodite, but he can't cast a love spell). Basically, Soon would need to go to a stronger god/goddess and convince them to force Aphrodite to at the very least provide a loophole to her curse.

Or he could just open Mijung's locket.

I'm thinking about it, but the pregnancy and concubine thing are canon in the current story. I guess that I just didn't make the foreshadowing/implications obvious enough. :smallredface:

God knows that they should be. I mean, after knowing so much about her and how Soon likely only rarely spoke of the mysterious wife he lost to the Snarl... meeting her would probably be a little surprising.

I think I can see where this is going. Please continue to write, this is going to be funny. Very, very funny. If you manage to make the last ounces of my sanity cry in agony at the embarassing scenes, i'd be thankful because I'd like it to shut up once in a while and calmly let me read everything in this thread. In terms of style, it's all practice. The more you write (please do), the better you get.
The perspective strikes me as a bit confusing, but I can't grasp it. Maybe it's just me being unfamiliar with a Third-Person-Narrator that looks through one character's eyes.

On the grammatical part of the story, I have some tips for you:
- Put every direct speech into a new line lest it's spoken by the same person.
- Watch out for repetitions in words - alliterations are good for madness mantras, but don't read nice if something is told neutrally. At some points, it might be better to do a listing in a single sentence.
- Run your story through Microsoft Word or OpenOffice Writer for grammar typos such as commas or post it to a fellow cracker here in the forums to proofread it. I'd happily do that, btw :)
- Numbers below 13 are less irritating to read when they're written out. In fact I do use microsoft word to type it up just incase I accidently move away from the page, or I mispell some stuff. THanks for the tips.

First off, no shipping in this thread and absolutely no shipping of anyone under 18. I'm fairly certain Water-Smurf is over 18, but the others? Not so much...

I'm thinking about it, but the pregnancy and concubine thing are canon in the current story. I guess that I just didn't make the foreshadowing/implications obvious enough. :smallredface:

And what is the eventual result of all this world-conquering stuff; would Deirdre eventually get crazy enough to challenge Xykon, maybe?

Yeah, member-shipping isn't allowed. We started doing it for a bit, then Roland came in and told us that we shouldn't do that if we didn't want to be merged with the current member-shipping thread, though his main objection was to a fic that shipped one of the minors on the thread (a boy who was fourteen years old). Shipping minors is a no-no.

I'm not saying what the price is, so I'll just throw this out there--what do you think he could do if it caused the death and/or destruction of Mijung and/or the children? Or brought some other misfortune on them? Or if they were bound to serve some demon/god/whatever? Or... really anything you can think of.

A bigger question may be, would the child even survive past infancy? Or to term, for that matter? Even if you discount the possibility of a recessive gene getting in there and giving a horrible genetic illness, Deirdre is freaking insane. And she has the power of the Snarl. Regardless of whether or not she actually is careful about taking care of the child/fetus, having deicidal pure chaos running through the veins can't be good for a pregnant woman.

But regardless, I doubt that Xykon would allow her to keep it. A child could incite her to rebel the same way it did for Redcloak. And as long as he can deprive her of the meds she needs, the belief that she is capable of being loved despite her species, and he can make her believe that he owns her, then he doesn't have to worry about rebellion. Redcloak isn't around to protect her anymore. Xykon manipulated her madness so she would murder him, and now she has no support outside of him. There's no one else.

I really should try to figure out the child's character before I have to. I already imagine it to be mouthy and sarcastic--somehow, I imagine Soon having a dry sense of humor as well, though his maturity curbs any urge to be cheeky--and probably content without knowing why it is the only child without green skin, happy to look at Yutrin like its biological father. And what are the pros and cons of making it a girl or a boy?

The only relation is that they're on the same site. Gleaner and OotS are otherwise completely unrelated. And it's technically not the OotS site, but the GiantITP site, since it existed far before OotS started.

Disclaimer: I don’t own D&D. I don’t own Order of the Stick (And Rich Burlew doesn’t own D&D, I presume, just to mention). Neither do I own the Gleaner class, by Keith Baker. I doubt he owns D&D either. Shame that.


Blessed Beast

“Easy now,” coaxed the caster. “Not long now. Just a round or so. Push.”

The horse whinnied. Her foal was coming out almost painlessly-well, compared to normally. The benefits of having a Gleaner around were many and varied.

The birth went smoothly.
Aaron wiped the sweat from his brow. Another days work, done. The sun was beginning to set…
Ding.
“Huh. That didn’t feel like XP normally does…” he wondered aloud, running fingers through straw blonde hair, green eyes blinking in surprise.
“I think you must have got a level.” giggled the girl standing next to him.
“I guess you’re right, Emily.” he said, nodding slowly. She giggled again.

He sighed, looking at her. Emily was pretty and short, four foot six or so, about five nine inches shorter than he was. She had curly red hair, blue eyes, and wore a loose black dress-thing. She was far too fond of affecting the traditions of the Southern peoples. She even carried a ‘katana’ in case her bow failed! But that wasn’t the point.

Aaron himself has a brown cloak, golden patterns made to look like ivy adorning the bottom, matching the real leaves upon his staff.
“Third level… don’t you get an animal companion at third?” she asked, cocking her head to the side.
“That’s druids. I can bless a beast.” he grinned.
“Same thing.” she said, waving her hand dismissively. “You should get an eagle! No, A warhorse! A Riding Dog! Yeah!”
“I’ve already picked.” he said, smiling slightly.

She scowled.
“You’re boring. We haven’t found ANY bandits yet either. What a waste of my warrior levels if you’re just gonna be safe all the time!”
“And she’s put the broken record on again.” sighed Aaron.
Emily poked him.
“You can talk, Mr NatureyNatureyNatureboy!”
“…what?”

She shrugged. “I dunno. Never speak of this again.”

He laughed, and hugged her.
“Let’s go back to the barn we’re staying in.” he said, releasing her a little awkwardly. “It’s really, really getting late.”

Candles flickered in the half-light, forming a perfect half circle around the creature soon to be Aaron’s most trusted companion.
Softly, he ran a finger along its spine.

“By my authority as a Gleaner, by Nature’s power, I invoke blessings upon thee and for us both.” he began quietly.

It was going to be a long eight hours…

“Nnngh…” groaned Emily, shifting slightly and falling out of the bed she seemed to be lying in.
Bed?

“What’s going on?” she wondered, looking around, seeing candles littering the floor. “…Aaron, where are you?”
“Huh? What? Oh.” said Aaron, startled, leaping up from a chair. “I was awake the whole time.”

“Explain this.” she said, eyes slitted.
“Umm… well…” he said, scratching his neck nervously. “I decided to use my Beast Bless on the only being I can trust…”
“Are you saying you…” she said, eyes flashing angrily. “That doesn’t even work, it has to be an animal, you idiot! Thus the name!”
“Um.” he said. “Then why is your skin a little softer, your hair silky, and your eyes sparkling?”
“Charisma score.” she scowled. But that didn’t sound like her…
Had he really?
By the gods, he probably had…
“By gods, you’re lucky I get AC and bonus stats for this or I’d hurt you.” she said, stewing silently. “What bonus did I get, anyway?”

He started backing away for the door.
“Aaron.” she growled.
“Umm… you always said you wanted a big family someday…so… uh… fertility.” he said, saying the last word very quickly.

A brief silence.

“Aaron, where did I put my bow?” she said.
“Umm…”
“If you don’t tell me, I’ll use your leg to beat you to death instead.”
“Ulp.”

It was almost a year later when Aaron reached seventh level. Emily seemed to have forgiven him for the Blessing-her wish of an encounter with bandits had been granted now they were in dangerous territory, and the stat boosts had helped greatly.

This was a good thing, as Aaron had no intention of spreading out his blessings. This time, he planned to tell her in advance. It would be better for his personal health.

“Erm… Emily?”
“What is it?” she asked.
Eleven months of travelling together had made them a little more outwardly friendly-but it would still take a prodigious sense motive to realise they were childhood companions, and an epic level player character would be hard pushed to realise she was effectively his animal companion.

“I hit seventh level today.” he said, fidgeting.
“You want to bless me again.” she said, glaring slightly.
“Uh… yeah…” he said, grinning a little.
“Fine.” she said. “But if you make jokes about it, or abuse it, I’m going to use my stat boots to remove your limbs one by one.”

He shuddered. He believed her.
“And which bonus are you thinking of?” she asked suspiciously.
“Champion?” he guessed, figuring it was the least insulting.
“If you try a Handle Animal check on me, I won’t go for limbs.” she growled.

He gulped, crossing his legs.
“But go ahead.” she said, as if uninterested.

* * *

It seemed that the higher level you were, the easier it was to attract bandits. Though Aaron was getting deeply sick of his Shillelagh spell, the rapid XP gain was nice.
It had only taken four more months to reach level eleven-and while Aaron enjoyed his newfound ability to call lightning-which even Emily admitted was pretty cool-what he really wanted was the third beast blessing.

“Me again?” asked Emily as they walked, before he even managed to start the conversation.
He gaped at her.
“Please. You always have a particularly pained expression. It’s almost as if you’re scared I’ll hurt you.”
“Well, you do threaten me every time… wait, did you just pass a sense motive check?”
“Yes.” she said, smiling slightly. “Now… I was checking Gleaner rules, and I worked out the tactically best special benefit. If we could communicate empathically, it’d be way easier to defend you. And we could split up to work with way less risk.” she said officiously.

There was quiet.
“What?” she asked.
“Have you been looking forward to this?” he asked suspiciously.
“Sure. Stat boosts off your XP. What’s to lose.”

He shook his head in awe of her audacity. “You know we won’t be able to hide anything, right?”
“I can hide my emotions.” she said, dismissing his point as irrelevant.

He sighed, but didn’t argue. After all, he planned to hide his as well.

About nine hours later, it was complete.

Can you hear me? thought Aaron.
Yep. replied Emily gleefully.

Her eyes are beautiful. he thought sadly to himself.
Of course my eyes are beautiful. she scoffed. My charisma was awesome even before all this boosting.
Besides, you look pretty good yourself.

Then it sunk in.

“Wait, you *like* me?” they both exclaimed, shocked.
“Umm… only for the last two years…” murmured Aaron, eyes downcast.
“Just for the last few months…” said Emily, looking away.

“Do you… do you want to… go out?” he said timidly.
She laughed nervously.
“We’ve been travelling together for about two years…” she said. “I think that’s a moot point… but… yes.”
Tentatively, they stepped closer together, closed their eyes, and leant forwards.
And kissed.

And boundless joy flooded the empathic bond, from both ends.

“Now are you fifteenth level?” asked Emily.
“No.” sighed Aaron, lifting up his shovel and digging the trench a little deeper.
“Now are you fifteenth level?”
“No.”
“How about now?”

Aaron sighed.
“Why don’t you… look for bandits or something? Then you can call me and we can get XP, then I’ll level up and you can stop going on at me.”
“Best. Idea. Ever.”

* * *

“This was the worst idea ever.” complained Aaron, as he hid behind a rock from the raging half-orc barbarian that was leading the bandits. Emily, as normal, was in the thick of it-and then Aaron suddenly shook his head. “Forget it. Control Winds.”

He concentrated, and then jumped up, cloak fluttering in the already powerful breeze. Emily, get over here. He thought at her.

Nonplussed, she did, running to his side, leaving a laughing half-orc and his followers insulting their honour.
“What are you doing?” she asked, annoyed-and then stopped, feeling eldritch energy gathering, as the wind changed from a whistle to a howl.

As the wind changed into a gale, circling around them, picking up small stones, she began to understand.

He was forming a tornado, with them safe in the eye, and the bandits trapped within it.
“Shape Stone.” he said, voice annoyed and strained, as he pushed his palm against the boulder he had hidden by. It floated, and split into myriad tiny, serrated stones, which he threw into the wind.
Where they were spiralled around at over a hundred miles per hour, tearing the bandits to shreds.

It was a while before the winds finally subsided, and lifeless bodies hit the ground.

Ding.
“I think that might be level sixteen I feel hitting my skull…” groaned Aaron.
“So… Share Spells…” he said, trying to work through the nasty headache he’d earnt. “I’m not letting you get hurt when I could cast a spell to help.” he said.
“Hey, it’s my job to protect you.” she said.
“Who just took out a bandit camp with two spells?” he said, a little smugly.
“…”

Winning an argument always helped with headaches.

“Are you nineteenth level yet?”
“Look.” said Aaron, coming to a halt. “That’s exactly what you said last scene. People are going to get bored.”
“…fine. Can I go look for bandits?”
“No.” said Aaron, remembering what happened last time with a shudder.

“Help!” cried one of the villagers. “Hobgoblins are attacking!”

Emily looked smugly at him.
“Just wanted a quiet day sowing seeds… but no…” grumbled Aaron, walking purposely through the village, Emily struggling to keep up.

“The gods are clearly in a hurry to get me levelled up...” he complained, holding up a hand to Call Lightning as one of the hobgoblins tried to attack him. They parted for him after that.

“Probably have a betting pool for what happens when Emily gets that last beast point.” he growled, coming to a halt in front of a well armed hobgoblin, bigger, stronger and infinitely more vicious than the others. “Call Lightning Storm.”

Within minutes all of the attackers were dead or dying, and Aaron had stormed halfway back to the fields, the villagers holding him in awe, Emily looking equal parts horrified, gleeful, and irritated that she hadn’t got a go as she desperately ran after him.

There was a quiet ding that reverberated in the silence left in his wake.
And then a second.

For some reason, no-one dared talk to him for the rest of the day.

“So… was that level nineteen?” said Emily timidly.

Huh. Even she was scared by that…
“I wasn’t scared.” she replied indignantly. “Just… a little impressed.”

Aaron smiled. Same old Emily.

“No. I think that was level twenty.” he said.
“Do I get another blessing?” she asked, smiling.

A brief quiet.

“There’s only one left… Devotion.” said Aaron quietly. “I can’t do that to you.”
“Please.” she said, shaking her head. “We’ve been travelling for three years. We’ve been together for nearly one. We’ve known each other since I was born. I know what I say when I say I’m already devoted.”

That’s what I love about her. She’s so tough, and yet so sweet in private.

“Yeah, but if you tell anyone I’ll kick your ass.” she smiled.
He smiled a tiny bit in response, and sighed.
“I don’t know. What if you change your mind? What if we aren’t actually right together? What if-”
“What if we see if that fertility spell worked, will you believe I‘m devoted then?” she asked, taking off her battle-dress.

“…yes.” he admitted. He would have argued more, but there was no way this was actually happening…

“You’re a skilled Gleaner.” said a sceptic elf, running finger’s through its soft blue hair, piercing eyes of the same shade staring at Aaron from within purple robes.
“I dunno…” said a female cleric, scratching her chin, brown eyes far away as she thought. She was talking in a light leather armour, wearing oddly revealing clothes underneath for a cleric.
“That’s an NPC class. And so’s your warrior girlfriend.”

Aaron nodded.
I still don’t believe that I’m not pregnant. complained Emily.
Yes, like we’re placed to be able to look after kids. We are *lucky*. he replied.
“We’re both very high level in them.” he said to the cleric. “She’s nineteenth, I’m twentieth.”
“Waitwait.” interrupted another elf, this one purple haired, golden eyed, and carrying a bow. “Don’t you get animal companions?”
He had the standard rogue’s outfit, but something about him screamed warrior.
“That’s druid.” said Aaron-for what was probably the seventieth time. “We get Blessed Beasts.”

A wolf leapt over the bushes, sitting next to the two.

Woof. replied Cain. Loosely translated, it meant ‘make me.’

When Emily leapt at the Wolf and began to grapple with it, the elven archer collapsed in laughter, the cleric giggled quietly, and the elf sighed, and went to shake Aaron’s hand.
“I’m going to regret this… but… congratulations on becoming a PC, and welcome to the Starborn.”

“Another great evil defeated.” said the archer, whose name was Liran. He had turned out to be male-or a very butch lesbian, the jury was out.
“Please. It was only the same level as us. It was simple.” said the first elf, Theana. They theorised she was a girl, just because of her name.

Leah, the cleric, just leant over to Emily.
“I know.” she whispered. “I’m a healer, and I felt it. I know. You need to tell them.”
“Fine…” sighed Emily. “You two? We need to talk.”

Aaron immediately recognised what she was talking about, and they stood up in sync.
“We’ve really enjoyed our time with the team.” said Aaron. “But circumstances are going to make us need to leave.”
“What are they?” asked Liran.
“I’m pregnant.” said Emily.

“And you have to leave… why?” asked Theana.
“We’re a team. We fight as a team, we work as a team, we live as a team. If you can’t do a mission, you stay at one of the small houses we have. Afterwards, we can help look after it-take turns.” outlined the elven Wizard.
“You… you would?” said Aaron.
“Of course.” nodded Leah with a smile. “We have enough overlap to manage it. When they’re old enough, maybe they can help out.”

“Will be a shame to not have our wolf rider for a while though.” sighed Liran.
“Cain’ll still go with you even if me and Emily don’t. And she’s quite capable of riding him without me there.” smiled Aaron. “I… I can’t stretch how much this means.”
“We might need to hold more tryouts.” said Leah.
“Let’s get them started.” nodded Theana.

I don't think so. She would just bring another one of her into the world--someone with a mix of blood that she thinks no one could love, a father that hates her, a mother that's too crazy to not hate her, and a horrible environment to grow up in. She wouldn't want to repeat what her mother did.

Yeah, our youngest cat is like that too.

Though recently he seems to have begun to understand that attacking me like that is not the greatest of ideas.
It's become a lot easier to cuddle with him without being ripped apart now that he realizes that doing so will result in me ignoring him for the rest of the day.

He loves attention, so when he hurts me i punish him by ignoring him.
Better for both of us that way.

I'd go for a Neutral alignment rather than Chaotic. It think it would annoy Soon more; he'd see it as just being lazy and not picking a side. :smalltongue: Besided, would make more sense given the enviroment the kid's growing up in; anyone surving there needs to be a realist, and to be able to adapt.

That's an interesting idea, but where on Earth would the child get a valley girl attitude/accent? Mijung and Yutrin don't have those speech patterns, and if they continue living under the condition's they're in, it'd be almost impossible to get involved with the artificialness and superficiality that is required to become a valley girl.


I'd go for a Neutral alignment rather than Chaotic. It think it would annoy Soon more; he'd see it as just being lazy and not picking a side. :smalltongue: Besided, would make more sense given the enviroment the kid's growing up in; anyone surving there needs to be a realist, and to be able to adapt.

@Water-smurf Pairings between first degree relatives, assuming that there was no significant inbreeding in earlier generations (which there wouldn't be with Tiasal being half-elf) would lead to 50% of the offsprings genes being identical by descent. Humans have a genetic load of 20 IIRC, with 7 being lethal if recessive. Assuming that the same is true for goblins and elves, then Tiasal would have inherited approximately 10 from her father and her child would have inherited approximately 5 identical recessive deletrious mutations in addition to those typical in the population. However, that's an overestimate. As many pregnancies terminate automatically before the mother is even aware that she was pregnant, a pregnancy that Tiasal became aware of would likely be one with a lower than average level of deletrious mutations. These can be very minor.

About snow: I live in an area where if we get snow somewhere in the province once every five years, we're lucky. Plus it's summer here. It's soooo hot! I'm getting too used to the air-con in my lab.

Humans are social primates. That means a strong in-group/out-group morality, a tendency to groupthink and dominance hierarchies. I'd say the default for most people is Lawful Neutral.

A little introduction to a crack pairing fanfic starring Tsukiko. I won't give away the pairing yet; sufficient to say, the prologue basically breaks her from Xykon in a "holy crap" sort of villainous BSOD.

Reflections: Prologue

"Haha, priceless. Oh man, did you actually think that I hired you as a minion, because I'm somehow in love with you?"

Tsukiko was taken aback. For a brief moment she staggered back, shaking, her eyes betraying an agglomeration of anguish and shock. That moment, the azure-blue walls of the sanctum swirled and kicked against its restraints; displacing light and space as if to create an illusion of a swirling plane. It took her a minute to finally orient herself and regain her speech. "But, but, sir," she stammered, pausing to studder as her eyes wavered, the halls becoming once again a swirl of haze. "Sir Xykon, but I've served you so faithfully. Surely, you must..."

"I do not seem to be holding my phylactery or the secret to teleporting the gates."

"Excuse me, sir?"

"It means you still have work to do, worthless trash." Xykon's voice - cold, almost as an icicle - sent a chill down her heart. That was the first time she had seen this side of the lich; not the jolly, perfect employer with a penchant for torture that she used to know. Instead, he had become almost like an avatar of evil; his voice unearthly and his eyes - two glowing red orbs extruding from the sockets of his skull - seemed no less than malignant. If he has screamed in rage he would perhaps be more human, but this - he was almost reminiscent of the Sapphire Order. Cruel. Emotionless. Intolerant.

She wanted to blame Redcloak for this, but could not find a justification. Weakly, her eyes shifted toward those empty sockets, desparately trying to discover the nonexistant wisp of affection within. Her knees shook, then finally collapsed under her weight; her mouth studdering as if trying - failing - to find an appropriate response. At this, the lich only laughed.

"I'll let you in on a little secret, Tsukiko." Briefly, he grinned, and but any reassurance she gathered from this was quickly dispelled when the lich glared into the girl's eyes, spewing toxic words almost in mockery of her fragile feelings. "You are nothing to me. Oh, don't get me wrong, you were a great tool for a while, back when I thought that you could - oh, I don't know - actually use the other part of Redcloak's spell. Now? You're worth as much to me as a level one commoner, and you know what's funny? I can tell you all of this, and you'll still slave away as my minion because - let's face it - you're so caught up in your silly little delusion of undead love that admitting your mistake is an impossibility at this point. Just like Redcloak, you're a toy that could only dance in the palm of my hand."

And even as he left, his mocking sneer echoed across the room, leaving only a broken necromancer girl sitting in the center, half-mindedly grasping at the air behind her unrepentant crush.

I've made a non-cannon character -Natsuko, who learns to become paladin and member of Sapphire Guard. Plase comment what You think about the story because You know, it's the first one and it's hard for the author to judge if his story is good.

It was another boring day in the Azure City. Natsuko was lying on the bed in her room in the castle, reading a book. It was so boring that every few minutes she had to make a will save throw against falling asleep. The title was "Politics And Law of Azure City in The Context of History". "Why do we have to read this thing?" -she thought. "I wanted to be a warrior, not a politician when I assigned for a paladin training. Off course there are diplomatic missions, but why do they want me to know all this? Like how much the previous ruler Whatshisname had raised taxes for shopkeepers and what was impact of this on used boats prices? Fortunately this is the last theoretical exam, then only a few fighting tests and I'll be a paladin, a member of Sapphire Guard and Lord Shojo's vassal. So far however this is really boring. I wish something would happen. Anything".
As soon as she thought it, her roommate Miko Miyazaki busted into the room. "Anything except her" Natsuko thought. "This girl only prays to the Twelve Gods and practices fighting all day. She is more boring than this book, if that is even physically possible. Or even worse, she can be very annoying when she is in her "Gods gave me wisdom to tell you that you are all stupid" mood".
But this time it was different. Miko was unusually excited, and little... scared?
-"Natsuko, I need your help" she said. Natsuko's jaw dropped -Miko saying "I need help" was something she had heard for the first, and probably for the last time in her life.
-"um.. I suppose this is something serious?" asked Natsuko
-"It's all the fault of this nobleman Kubota! I think he's evil ,and as soon as I become a paladin I'll prove it and smite..."
-"Calm down Miko, and start from the beginning".
-"I was practicing fighting in the training room as I do every day, when suddenly Kubota and his bodyguards walked in. He was watching our training, and after I won fights with all the other present students he asked me for a private meeting". Whatever Natsuko thoughts about Miko, she had to admit that Miko was a perfect fighter. She had no problem beating every student in paladin training, and even a few paladins. Some even made jokes that she must be the Terminator, the half iron golem sent from the future to protect Lord Shojo. "Then, when we went to the meditation room...

Miko, Lord Kubota and his two bodyguards walked into the small room. Two soldiers took their places near the door, as if they were claiming this room as Kubota's territory.
-"I have an interesting offer for you, young paladin," said Kubota with a soft voice. "I can appreciate real talent when I see it. Wouldn't you like to be a member of the strongest force in the city?"
-"I'm not a paladin yet" said Miko. "And after two more years of training I'll join the Sapphire Guard"
-"I wasn't thinking about that bunch of paladins, but the real force. The ones who really rule this city are nobility, and I have the strongest army of them all. Seeing your combat abilities now, imagine yourself in five or ten years time, as the ... new city ruler's ... right hand"
-...
-"I know you haven't finished your training, but I have great fighting teachers at my service. You'll learn much more than in this... school. There will also be no legal problems; as a nobleman I can be lord of anyone from paladin training who wants to be my vassal".
Two soldiers began to look more aggressive, as if they were there not to prevent anyone from getting into the room, but from leaving it.
-" I appreciate your offer, but I must reject it" -said Miko, and began to think fast: "What level are those soldiers? Will they attack me? I have no weapon, but they may not know about my monk levels". But loudly she said: "I want to serve only my city and its ruler, Lord Shojo"
-"Lord Shojo is getting old, and he may die very soon... Sooner than anyone may expect. And then there will be a new ruler, who gives prizes to those who are helping him, and punishes those who oppose his power".
Miko was thinking about the answer, when suddenly the doors opened and Shojo walked into the room, pretending he didn't notice the soldiers guarding it. Miko could hear muttered curses from Kubota, but he and his soldiers bowed to the lord of the city.
-"I've heard you were watching the young paladins' training. As you can see, the future of Sapphire Guard looks bright and safe" -Shojo said. He was trying to hide it, but Miko saw that he was worried about something.
-"Yes, very talented fighters indeed" said Kubota. "I'm looking for new recruits to my army. As you surely know, because I am donating large sums of money to this paladin school, according to law I can select one of them for my personal service. And miss Miyazaki has proven herself to b ande ideal candidate for my army".
-"Yes, You can choose any student, but Miko is no longer one of them. In recognition of her superior skills, she was promoted to paladin yesterday, and tomorrow is her final test to become my vassal. Isn't it true, Miko?"
Miko was shocked, because she had just heard it for the first time. She saw that Shojo was very nervous waiting for her response.
-"Off course" said Miko.
-"But.. lord!" screamed Kubota -"I saw all the documents yesterday, and you haven't promoted any paladins!"
-"You probably overlooked it. You can check again, it's in the archive with yesterday's date. Now please go search for your new soldier, I have to talk with Miss Miyazaki about the details of tomorrow ceremony."
-"As you wish my lord" said Kubota leaving the room with his escort.

As soon as Kubota disappeared, Shojo started to breathe easily.
-"Sorry I was so late, but Kubota had a nearly perfect plan of preventing me from coming here" he said. "Also I apologize for making you lie -I know how much you value the truth, but there was no other way. Kubota indeed had a right to make you his vassal without your agreement, and knowing your respect to law you wouldn't oppose him."
Miko was still shocked.
-"Master, can we speak safely here? Kubota may be eavesdropping".
-"Don't worry Miko. This room is completely soundproof. You can imagine what I used to do here with my wife when I was younger"
Miko stared at him a with puzzled look.
-"Or maybe anyone but you could imagine it" said Shojo. "Anyway, I have to promote you to be my vassal tomorrow. You don't have to be afraid of the test, with your stats and abilities you should pass it without any problem. You'll miss two years of training, but your fighting abilities are better than some students leaving the academy, and your devotion to law and the Gods is indubitable. Other thing you'll miss are ethics and politics lectures, but I think it's boring and you don't need it."
-"But why haven't you allowed Kubota to take me to his army? I don't like him, but if my duty demands ..."
-"Miko, I haven't taken you from the monastery to waste your talent in service of some nobleman who thinks only of his own benefits, and doesn't value the life of his servants. The city, and the Sapphire Guard needs you."
-"My lord, Kubota was speaking as if he wanted to kill you and take your place. Is he really as powerful as he says? Shouldn't you have some bodyguards with you?"
-"Never trust a politician, Miko. People like Kubota will tell you anything if it helps their cause. He is really dangerous, but how dangerous exactly, even he may not know."
-"But you are a politician, and you are different, master!"
-"How do you know that?"

-"I'm just joking. Maybe there are some who really care about people, but it's not likely you'll meet many of them. As for my bodyguard, he waits outside the room. Come and see him ,you'll probably like him"

-"First of all, the first impression is most important, so you should prepare something special for this ...test. Maybe some sort of fancy dress? I still have this French maid costume that I bought for that costume party last year. The one where You tried to smite Niu dressed as a succubus."
-"French maid? I don't... think Lord Shojo would find it attractive" said Miko with a blush.
-"You might be right. You probably will not fit into this black leather costume Niu was wearing, besides walking on high heels requires some time to learn. We have to find something different. I could borrow a school uniform from my brother's daughter, but You probably won't fit into it too."

He told me about some multijuice potion that changed his friend into half-cat. But no, I don't want to see this jerk again. He wanted me to drink this thing when we were making out. We'll have to rely on more traditional methods like headband with cat's ears. And of course a black swimsuit. You can't be a catgirl without a black swimsuit. I'll borrow one for you, and make ears for headband." Stopping herself from bursting out in laughter was getting harder and harder for Natsuko.
-"Is it really necessary?" said Miko blushing.

Stopping herself from laughing was so hard that Natsuko said:
-"I'll go and prepare all the clothes for you" and left the room, before Miko had time to ask about anything.

-"Ok then. If you want to see it .. oh, I'm sorry." said Natsuko ashamed
-"it's ok. I'll be there tomorrow" said Sangwaan. They didn't know it, but she already has seen it in her vision. And she had prepared her true seeing spell for tomorrow.

Again she had problem with stopping her laughing. She was about to go after Miko to watch the carefully prepared joke, when suddenly a thought struck her: "What if they find out it was my fault? All the castle will see it, and Miko will surely tell them whose idea it was. What if Lord Shojo will take it as an insult? They're gonna expel me! Why haven't I thought about it earlier? I’m supposed to be Lawful Good! I know, this must be that "no fear" thing with paladins. I wasn't afraid of consequences, I didn't think about it. And all the years on those stupid ethics lessons they were teaching us how to stay responsible when we don't feel fear". And because she wasn't fully a paladin yet, she began to feel very frightened.
At this very moment, Miko opened the door, and walked into throne room.
"I didn't know there will be so many people" thought Miko. "But I should do it, for my city"

Now, Cap'n. The idea's real shiny, but there are a few things. I'll put them in a spoiler to save room. For a start, the dashes for speech are slightly awkward. Second, it could do with some more spacing. The start's a little staccato, maybe connect the sentences? It seems drawn out.

Instead of 'Natsuko was lying on the bed in her room in the castle, reading a book. It was so boring that every few minutes she had to make a will save throw against falling asleep', maybe you should put 'Natsuko was lying on her bed, in the castle reading a book-a book so boring she was starting to fail will saves against sleep.'

Some more commas might help a little-and most importantly, Shojo is pretending to be senile. Miko doesn't know. It's kinda important, remember what she does when she finds out?

I reiterate. Real shiny work, cap'n. Apart from that stuff.
