Welcome to the 11th Edition of the OOTS Quiz game.

The rules are plain simple. Someone asks a question that can be answered with (one or more) oots comic strips. (However, try to avoid boring counting questions...) Then people can try to answer it which should always include a link to the strip where you can see the answer. (Please do not write something like "Ah, that's A, you can see it somewhere between OOTS141 and OOTS200. Or maybe it was also a bit later, can't remember right now, but it's definately A.")
If still no one has a clue after after -say- 24 hours (maybe earlier) hints can be given. Whoever first gives the correct answer can ask the next question.

OK, 'nuff said, let's get it started! (: YAY!)

Oh, btw... it would be nice if people edited the link to the correct strip right next to the question once it has been answered. (Not the answer itself, just where you find it.)

3) Questions have to have an answer that is demonstrated by at least one, and no more than three, canon online strip. (No bonus material either online or in the books)
4) No counting questions with more than 3 parts. For example: how many times has Roy said "the".
5) If the answer given is not the answer expected, but still technically answers the question, allow it. You can rephrase and ask your question again later.
6) If an answer is given that in no way is correct, then players can call attention to the fact. At that point, there may be 2 questions occurring at the same time. The 1st question that was incorrectly answered is the valid question. The second question may be answered, but for no prize (aka asking the next question).
7) If your response is ninja'd, that is if someone beats you with the correct answer, please edit your post stating, "ninja'd, please answer above question".
8) After 24 hours without an answer, please provide a hint. After an additional 24 hours pass, please provide the answer and take pride that you have stumped us all.
9) Recognize that this is a game. It is supposed to be quick and fun. If a question seems to go beyond the rules, assume that the author is not familiar with the rules, and point them out. If the author affirms that the question is allowable within the rules, then continue with the game. If the question turns out to be not allowable, it becomes an open question. Groan and move on.

That seems to be a good expression of how we play the quiz game, judging by observing the posts.
If anyone wants to suggest alterations to these rules, they can discuss them here or PM me. If enough people agree with the alteration, I will edit this first post to reflect the new rule(s).

Here is the current question:

Mr. IFCC (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0632.html) has only two letters (one repeats); an "L" and an "E"

I know of two examples of Belkar attacking with a blunt object instead of his trusty daggers (wood does not count). Find me two examples (250 bonus interwebs if you find the two I know of).

The word for the color has a double meaning in the context of the music. Noticing the double meaning requires real-world knowledge, and thus possibly a Google search. However, what to search for is pretty obvious from the panel with the music in it.

'Calling shenanigans' in this thread, to my understanding, means that a question is disqualified based upon the definition being too vague, open to interpretation, or requiring excessive proof beyond the actual answer (i.e. asking someone to find the only strip with X as we'd have to prove, using every other strip, that it is in fact the only one). You call it on a question, not an answer to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me.

I wouldn't say that calling them swords is a stretch. You can both slash and pierce with them and they are the correct shape. That they are made of magic instead of metal doesn't make them 'not-swords'. That said, the aura around them is magic and not flames as far as I can tell, but I can see arguments for either side, so I wouldn't be so quick to disqualify the answer.

But, if you want an unambiguously flaming sword, then this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0267.html) should satisfy you.

Lvl45DM!
2010-10-16, 07:51 PM
@Gwynfrid and Crisis21 we dont actually see them doing slashing or piercing damage and since noone else in the bar is using lethal weapons its safe to assume that neither is she, so calling them swords is making an assumption. But yes the Angels sword was the one i was looking for
and as for the parking rules, the early bird special seems fairly innovative but you're right it does apply to parking prices more than the rules for actual so current question would be "Who created innovative parking rules?"

Oh and I was unaware shennanigans has a set meaning :smallconfused: but i will use it as such in the future

I'm asking if there is absolutely anything, other than the name, to identify this person as Canadian in the strip in question. Personally, I'm not familiar with Canadian pop-culture references, or at least not familiar enough to identify them as definitively Canadian, and I'm in no mood to google the names of every character in OotS to see whose name matches a Canadian's.

I honestly think that asking us to find a Canadian without anything in the strip that is unambiguously (and possibly stereotypically) Canadian, is reason to call Shenanigans as there is no Canada in the OotS universe and thus no Canadians.

If you have no hint that you can give us that will help us find the strip in question without needing to reference outside material, then I say we move on to a new question.

I understand your complaint to be that that you feel that pop culture references constitute legitimate questions and that I have somehow said otherwise (something which was never my intention and I apologize if it ever came across that way). If I have gotten this incorrect, then please do post the relevant phrases.

My entire complaint was that the question as worded was extremely vague and needed clarification. That I misinterpreted what you were referring to was another matter.

Anything regarding my ignorance of pop culture was in response to my perception that this you viewed this as common knowledge and were talking down to those that didn't get it. Most of my issues in the past with pop-culture reference questions has been that they are extremely vague, not the references themselves. The rest have been differences in interpretation of certain pop-culture references.

I also felt the suggestion that I should take my issue with your question up with The Giant to be in very poor taste.

PopcornMage

Here's what I saw as expressing a problem not with the word of the question, but the nature of it being pop cultural oriented:

I'm asking if there is absolutely anything, other than the name, to identify this person as Canadian in the strip in question. Personally, I'm not familiar with Canadian pop-culture references, or at least not familiar enough to identify them as definitively Canadian, and I'm in no mood to google the names of every character in OotS to see whose name matches a Canadian's.

I'm not saying they aren't valid ones, but my lack of pop culture knowledge that you possess is no reason for you to go off like that.

That's where I got the opinion that your problem with the question was not simply with its wording.

ETA: And I'm sorry that you felt my response of "Random pop culture reference, if you don't know it, you don't know it." was disdainful, it was not. Think of it more like "No worries, not everybody can answer every question" which is dismissive, perhaps, but not, to me, in a negative way.

Crisis21

Okay, fair enough.

The first was me misinterpreting your question as referring to a character. I was attempting to get some clarification as to what you defined as 'Canadian' since there could be any number of such interpretations and I did not know yours.

The second was me responding to what I perceived as you talking down to me as a result of me not getting the reference.

The third was me responding to what I perceived as your anger towards me over something that I did not consider an angerable offense.

Edit: Finally, that particular quote wasn't what I found disdainful.

Yes, bad wording on my part, I apologize for that. If it comes up again, I'll try harder to balance making the question difficult enough to be challenging without being too unclear.

The second was me responding to what I perceived as you talking down to me as a result of me not getting the reference.

No such intention! I'm sorry if I gave that impression, but I was trying to express an attitude of not worrying about not knowing it. Another question will come along, and it's not like Alex Trebek is sending any of us checks.

[...] there is no Canada in the OotS universe and thus no Canadians.

Not to take sides in your long (but civil) debate with PopcornMage, but I disagree on this particular point. Canada does exist in the OotS universe. I can prove it... or I can make that the subject of a coming question, one that will not rely on pop culture, but just a mere DC10 Knowledge(Geography) check.

I'll have to make you wait, though, because KoboldRevenge's current question has me beaten.

I'll be interested to see that actually. And his question has me stumped too and I'm pretty sure I've read what he hinted at.

Edit: for simplicity's sake, here is the current question:

So, we are trying to find some cracks in a brown floor sans the golum-ish language?

Dunno. In fact, I can't say I understand the question. I get the Gollum reference of course, but that is no help.

Time for a hint maybe ?

Yeah, I also see that as a Gollum reference, but I'm pretty certain that the hint he provides refers to the Harry Potter series. This has resulted in me being highly confused.

OK, I'm going to ask you the Canadian question then, just to give you something to look forward to in the meantime.

The current question is unchanged. Consider this either a bonus question, or a personal question from me to Crisis21:

Show me not one, but two strips that prove the existence of Canada in the OOTS universe.

Hints below, if you think you need some:
The first piece of evidence is easier to find when you remember that Georgia, New Jersey and Missouri also have a place in the OOTS universe.

The second piece of evidence also proves the existence of the NBA in the OOTS universe.

The second piece of evidence requires a DC10 Knowledge(Geography) check, while the first piece of evidence doesn't even need that.

This was just a random refrence not conected to the question sorry for the confusion. Heres the answer (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0343.html).

For those who don't know, the NBA team that plays in Canada is the Toronto Raptors.

If you guys need more hints, just say so. Although, considering the ones I have already given, plus PocornMage's accurate point, it's not that hard a question anymore.
