Righto ladies and gents. I know the "honour" (:smalltongue:) of making this new thread was meant to go to Roc Ness, but he contacted me to let me know he's simply got too much schoolwork on his plate right now, so I'll be taking care of the threadwork for him this time.

Obligatory welcome speech:
Welcome, one and all, to the third fourth Australasia in the Playground thread! The perfect place for all our friends in the Australasia region to congregate, meet nearby fellows and talk about the world around us continues to expand.

Previous threads, for your convenience:

There's the Melbourne Aquarium, not too far from Flinders St. There's Federation Square and.....I don't have anything else. I don't think I'd make a good tour guide. :smalltongue:

Rawhide: Melbourne...Museum is pretty cool. There's a lot of funky historical stuff around...the Melbourne Gaol was interesting and a tad creepy.

(trying to remember back two years ago)

There are great second-hand bookshops everywhere.

St Kilda was nice...we went there at sunset with fish and chips.

There are some really tall observation towers...they're funky.
The aquarium.
The Melbourne Zoo has a butterfly house...it's wonderful. Butterflies everywhere.

And Melbourne is just generally a really pretty city...just catching trams places would be sort of fun

Have they tried government agencies or charities? They can help with temp accomodation.

I'm sitting on the desk at work, phone rings for the first time in half an hour and it's a cold call.

Have they tried government agencies or charities? They can help with temp accomodation.

He's trying to avoid government agencies and charities; and he does have his father in Brisbane as a last resort option, though it will be incredibly inconvenient and impractical.

Accommodation needs to be more than temporary. He's doing post-grad studies, and can't really afford to be moving around all the time. Which is why he has been in his current bad accommodation situation for a long time - the house owner knows he has a limited budget, which has pretty much trapped him in a situation which is detrimental to his mental health. The current situation has effectively forced him to either move out or become the owner's live-in servant.

Lady Moreta
2011-03-23, 02:51 AM
Still, if he really wants/needs to get out of this place, temporary accommodation could be something to look at until he can find something more permanent.

I would suggest he stick up notices at community centres and supermarkets. Also suggest that he get in touch with local churches - he doesn't need to be religious, but a lot of churches have people who are willing to put others up for a time. I stayed with people I didn't even know for three weeks while doing fieldwork research for my Masters degree- found them through church. It's worth a shot. Might only be temporary again, but homestaying with someone from a church is likely to be less stressful than government accommodation - they're more likely to have no time limit on how long your friend can stay.

I would just like to comment on how annoying it is when someone comes to fix something and all you can do is think how much you want to use what they're fixing. We just had a plumber to fix the toilet and all I could think while he was here is 'I need to peeeeee!'

I know, it did dawn on me that it was terribly pun light, I should have risen to the occasion. I'm actually living with international students (renting for uni) at the moment, so all my puns go unnoticed, so I'm a bit rusty. As an aside to memory lane, I'm being a best man this weekend! I've slacked a bit on my best man duties (as another friend is organizing bachelor party), but does anyone have any ideas? At the moment the friend is thinking pub or boobie bar, while you find girls there with bouncy and well rounded personality other options to do instead/as well would be awesome:smallwink:

Also, since I need non bias people, on a scale of 1(Oh god no, please anything but that!) to 10 (Seems alright) how do you think of this for a speech plan;

Basically introduce myself, then "Well, I'll start off with the only wedding joke I know, get it out of the way early. One upon a time two antenna decide to tie the knot and get married. While the wedding ceremony was nothing special, the reception was amazing" Follow it up with a general speech about how awesome the friend and wife to be is etc (keeping it semi serious for a change:smalltongue:) and end with "And, now a toast to the new Mr and Mrs Smith" and hold up a piece of toast hidden on my person.

Yay or Nay? :smalltongue:

Thank ye Lady Moreta for your input, I of course would actually give a toast the normal way straight after (yelling chug chug chug at a kegs the norm right?). I just didn't want to try to overtly "humourous" or limelight hogging for the speech, going for serious for once. Which is rare:smalltongue:

I don't see anything wrong with one joke and then going serious, then another joke. It sounds like you'd be giving a speech that's very 'you' and if you're the best man then I'm sure that's what the groom would prefer. Especially if you wax lyrical about how awesome he and his new wife are in the middle :smalltongue: You know your friend best though - would he appreciate the humour? you're the one giving the speech, but you're giving it for your friend...

What kind of oddity is this? :smallamused:

Lady Moreta
2011-03-28, 12:14 AM
Actually, that's fairly normal for job hunting. The same type of thing happened to me when I was looking. Spent months searching and applying, got a few calls, the occassional interview, but no job. Then I interviewed with another company. Two hours after I left the interview (I'd barely even gotten home again) I got a call from the recruitment agency offering me the job.

And that is the story of how Moreta got her current job :smallamused:

I searched and job hunted for 7-8 months before I got this job, and I got the damn thing within two hours!

Ok...So as some of you know, Rawhide is totally coming to Melbourne. That's cool.

You know what's cooler? An impromptu Melbourne gitp meet up. I know there are a few of you that could probably get into town to hit up a bar or something (I think most of us are 18 or older?) Or at least just go to a restaurant. Or coffee if it comes down to it.

The dates are looking like 12th, 13th, 15th, or 18th. Rawhide and I are free all of those evenings (we think) so anyone else wanting to come (only for Rawhide, I'm sure. No one likes me :D) probably drop a post in here, or a PM to one of us, I guess...It's all just a planning theory right now.

We're also considering going to a comedy festival show. Any other ideas, please post them :D

Teehee!

I'm also in Melbourne around then.

I'm there friday night (15th) to Monday midday.

However, for all of the 16th (except possibly at night...will let you guys know on that...) I'm dancing.
17th is tentatively free...that is, my dance partner has said "I don't really mind whether or not we go to the dance comp again to watch the super good people" and, well, if there's a Gitp meetup, I'd probably go to that instead.

So yeah...organise stuff, and I'll try to get there

And I'm over 18, so bars work.

I would say probably 6pm until...I dunno, late? Whenever we feel like wrapping it up I guess. Probably before midnight since I am way too poor to be paying for a taxi home :P

How do you buy tickets?

Can you buy paper tickets?
Should you just buy a weekly Zone 1/2 pass and be done with it?
Will that cover all the travel you need to do around Melbourne?
Where do these Zones (1/2) extend to?
Is it better to pay per stop, if you may be doing a lot?

Skeppio

How do you buy tickets?
Either talk to the operator at the station, or put in the ticket you want on one of the many machines they have.

Do you have to use the Metcard or myki?
Either is fine, if you're travelling within Metro services. Vline services have different tickets. Myki is entirely optional.

Which is better?
Personally, I'd go with Metcards. I've heard the Myki machines have a tendency to not work.

Can you buy paper tickets?
Vline services use paper tickets. Metro uses cardboard. But I assume by that you meant physical tickets in general, so yes.

Should you just buy a weekly Zone 1/2 pass and be done with it?
If you're going to be travelling around a lot each day, I'd say yes. If you're going to be using their services for four or less days, buy dailies (it works out cheaper).

Will that cover all the travel you need to do around Melbourne?
Around Melbourne, a single Metro ticket will cover you for all trams, buses and trains for the period it's valid for.

Where do these Zones (1/2) extend to?
I don't actually know from memory. The site I linked you to should have a map, and colour key.

Is it better to pay per stop, if you may be doing a lot?
Pay by stop? :smallconfused: I've only done that for Vline services, and those just designate which station I can get on at. Metro tickets cover you for the zone you chose, regardless which line you're on. But if you end up on a Vline service, they don't accept Metro tickets. Depending on zone, Vline tickets are accepted on Metro services, trams and buses included.

Rawhide
2011-04-10, 05:06 AM
By paper ticket, I mean, you hop on the bus and say "I want off at this stop", pay, and they print you a ticket valid for that travel (or do that at a ticketing office).

By pay per stop, I meant, pay a fee for every time you use the service. Could have been worded better. You hop on, pay for a paper ticket or use another ticket valid for one travel/use a card that does that, then hop off.

A new question though! Is there any reason to get Zone 2? It seems pretty far out, but that could be misleading.

Oh! I'm not actually sure about buses, it's been a long time since I've used them, but they use the same tickets as the metro trains so I doubt you'd be able to get one for a specific stop. On the plus side, all metropolitan public transport uses the same tickets, so one ticket covers you for all of them.

Not really. Metro tickets are time-based. It goes 2-Hourly, Daily, Weekly. Anything above that you won't need to worry about.

A new question though! Is there any reason to get Zone 2? It seems pretty far out, but that could be misleading.

Zone 2 covers the outer suburbs. If you're planning on travelling there, then you'll need a Zone 2 ticket. They have maps that say which zones are Zone 1 or 2 at most stations, if you need them.

The buses work exactly the same way as every other metlink system. You validate your ticket as you get on and then you're all set.

Zone 2 covers the outer suburbs. If you're planning on travelling there, then you'll need a Zone 2 ticket. They have maps that say which zones are Zone 1 or 2 at most stations, if you need them.
I can't see you needing to get into zone 2, it's about a 30-40 minute train ride out of the center of town towards me, I can't speak for the rest of the lines. All trams are within zone 1, no exceptions. Buses are about half half distribution of zone 1 and 2. The majority are either one zone or the other, not many are both.

The metlink site is quite good for doing things. The journey planner is generally sane, but try and use stops rather than addresses, since it can do some really funky combinations. If it helps, google maps has train stations and most tram lines displayed, so that can come in handy.

Also, you can't say to the driver "can you please stop at x stop", or at least not generally. Sometimes you can get them to tell you if your stop is coming up, depends on the driver.

Also if you get caught out by the ticket inspectors, just explain that you're not from 'round these parts and you're confused by the system, they'll generally be fairly generous. But do try to have some sort of ticket with you (:

I think that's mostly it.

um... can anyone recommend a removalist company? moving from Canberra to Brisbane in about 3 and a half weeks and kind of need to sort one out...

Do you have Grace Removals over there? I've never actually used a removalist company in this country before, but I see their trucks around a fair bit so they must be pretty decent. If you're really worried, I'd be more inclined to find a national firm, rather than a local one - they may cost more, but if they're national they're also far more likely not to steal your stuff, or threaten to dump it on the side of the road. Better for your peace of mind, though probably not your wallet.

Also, while this is not helpful advice, I would second your caution, as my parents tell of some of the're small but valuable trinkets going missing in the moves they have had.

I would suggest keeping anything small and valuable on your person while you travel yourself. If there's anything you'd be heartbroken to lose, don't stick it with the rest of your stuff in the removalist van. Take it with you however you travel up yourself.

Say, Death, do you mind explaining your username? I keep getting that suspicion that there is a joke I'm not catching on to...

He's your friend.
So he's Death, your friend the reaper.

That is basically the short version:smallbiggrin:

Actually when I first joined I was going by the name Draconius or something along those lines. I think the oots comic had a dragon, and I wanted a knight on a dragon.

I eagerly went down and requested a dragon warrior! And.....well....nothing happened :smalltongue:

I was overwhelmed by artists who for some reason didn't want to make me a free avatar of a dragon rider. I then asked for a Reaper (not actually because I read Terry Pratchett, I only read them about half a year later when people told me I was basing my avatar off a Death in there)

Chris the Pontifex made me the Reaper, for which I was extremely grateful (he had done Rowland st Jude and other prominent playgrounders)

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j139/z-t/death.gif

And after rockin' that avatar for a while, Darius the Drow told me I should change my name (this was when you could change name as easy as your avatar)

I went for Death; your friend the Reaper as it sticks out more than just plain Death. It also fitted my easy going personality, I didn't want to avatarize a evil foreboding "god" creature in the SMBG etc.

So there you have it, a very long winded answer!:smalltongue:

Guess whose company was affected by said glitch? Guess whose business unit was affected by said glitch? Guess who hasn't been paid :smallfurious:

That is basically the short version:smallbiggrin:

Actually when I first joined I was going by the name Draconius or something along those lines. I think the oots comic had a dragon, and I wanted a knight on a dragon.

<snip>

I went for Death; your friend the Reaper as it sticks out more than just plain Death. It also fitted my easy going personality, I didn't want to avatarize a evil foreboding "god" creature in the SMBG etc.

So there you have it, a very long winded answer!:smalltongue:

Ooooh! I thought there was a pun on the word Reaper. :smalltongue:

EDIT:

Well, the thread had fallen to the second page again, so I'm going to give you a summary of my day, then I expect you all to tell me about your respective days.

Today started well, the weather was fantastic and I very much enjoyed my ride to uni. Once I got to uni, I discovered that people had nothing better to do than to comment on my new hair cut (most of them seemed to think it was a good look, so I'm not complaining ).

Then I had Context for Learning, where we talk about all the things that can change the ways a child learns, then lunch, then more context for learning, then assignment work. And now I'm home. Got to try out the lights of my bike for the first time on the way home, they work well well-enough that I got home with out dying, so once again, not complaining!

So, all in all, a good day.

What about every one else? :smalltongue:

Prepare for the ultimate blandness of ... MY DAY!

I was woken up at ~11.16 AM by my girlfriend, calling my mobile to tell me it was her lunch break already and I was supposed to be feeding her. With me barely awake, she just got pies that I paid her back for and brought them over to my place for her lunch / my breakfast.

I then hitched a lift with her down to her work, because it's right next to the post office I needed to collect a parcel of gaming stuffs from (a parcel that I'm still the only one to have put money towards. Four way split my ***).

After which I got home, read some new rules (though not much), tried to calm my sister after she got home angry from work, applied for some new jobs, got another call from a techie looking for my dad who doesn't actually live with us, wasn't bothered by the Fred Hollow's foundation guy (he'd have been disappointed to learn that I have no money to give his noble cause) because I was on the phone to the barely decipherable techie and then scrubbed new resin minis in the sink to remove the release agent stuff. Next thing I new it was evening-ish and my girlfriend came over to see me again briefly, this time for a walk and then it was dinner.

After dinner I wasted time on the internet / more reading of rules until now it's actually the next day which is today and I'm posting my dull response.

Unemployment! It does not make for a great read.

Unemployment! It does not make for a great read.

I feel your pain. Not that I'm unemployed but I know how it feels. It took me 7-8 months to find the job I'm currently in, so I know the feeling.

My day - also not very interesting, since it's only 9:25am...

okay, 9:32am now... :smalltongue:

I got up, had breakfast, got ready for work, went to work. Since arriving at work, I have read one personal email, replied to a PM here, read some threads - oh yeah and done some work :smalltongue:

Actually I had the Lotus Notes tech playing with my email, she fixed the problem but also updated the look - not sure I like the new look now - anyone know how to play around with Lotus Notes? maybe I'll make a post here... that killed about half an hour where I couldn't do anything.

I have since gone to get the mail, distributed it (all three pieces) and am now back at my desk thinking that I should wrap up this laptop that needs to be sent to Brisbane so I can get the roll of bubble wrap out of the office.

And that is my day thus far.

spent the day packing! only 2 weeks left in canberra. rang the removalists to get them to come give a comprehensive quote. and packing my bag for coming and visiting Brissy for two nights.
and got my import permit for moving my lizards into QLD approved... now waiting for the export from ACT to be approved too.
oh, and i brought the washing in off the line, took out the rubbish (to find that it's colder in my room than outside) and fed my lizards... and still need to clean out rats...
and off-and-on IMed with my boyfriend till he went to dinner about an hour and a half ago.

tomorrow: work 11-6, dinner with friend at 6:30
thursday: 6:30am flight to BNE, see mum and boyfriend
Friday: unknown GitPG stuff, see friends, family and boyfriend
Saturday: same ad friday + 2:15pm flight to CNR and work from 6-midnight
Sunday: friend comes and takes unwanted mattress and fishtank away, then work from 1-9pm
monday: work from 11am-midnight
tuesday: final touches to pack (hopefully) work from 6-midnight
wednesday: removalist comes to give quote, work from 6-midnight
thursday: pick boyfriend up from airport at 8am!!
friday: dinner with housemates and boyfriend
saturday: sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep
sunday: breakfast with people from work
monday: removalists take stuff away
tuesday: clean room + possibly leave
wednesday: if not left on tuesday, then leave today!

and that's my life for the next fortnight... hopefully there will be more sleep in there than i am allowing for.

I've spent most of today either struggling to stay awake or getting seriously pissed off at the sales database we have to use. They've recently upgraded to a new version (and by recently I mean 'three days ago') and it's already crapping out.

This morning pretty much everyone in the network who uses it were jumping up and down 'cause it was spitting out error messages and then just crashed. It got fixed. Then just before I went to lunch it started spitting out error messages again. Within 5mins four different people emailed the network with the same problem. I get back from lunch and see an email from the key user saying the system is down again.

Absolutely freaking useless...

There are only three australia wide networks. Telstra, Vodafone and Optus. Any other network will jack into one of these three.

Telstra is the most expensive and are keeping their 3G network (dubbed NextG) purely to themselves. They are by far the most expensive, but have the best coverage.

Optus has the most other companies using their network. Of interest in Virgin Mobile/Broadband which is 100% Optus owned and uses the Optus network. I would not recommend Dodo.

Vodafone has terrible reception where I am, so I've largely ignored it.

Three is an exception, they have their own 3G network in major cities only, outside that network it falls to 2G (i.e. sl-o-o-ow) on a different carrier. This has changed a few times, but last I checked, it was Telstra.

I might go with Optus, what are the chances of me getting a good deal if I show what I am getting with Vodafone? I pay $49 a month of 10 gig on a month to month post paid plan, no period contract.

Well, I made some calls last night. Optus are offering me a similar deal, but can't promise 100% coverage due to my location.

Telstra, those lousy so and sos, want to lock me in to a 12 month contract. :smallmad:

Aren't phone companies fun? :smalltongue::smallamused:

We're with Three and they're pretty good... though it does get exasperating that you can't go an hour out of the city without your phone suddenly being on roaming, which strikes me as ridiculous. We got a pretty good deal, but we're also on a contract (which works for us, clearly not what you want).

Right now I get to be the 'figure out what the heck is going on' girl... We've got a couple of guys going up to a mine site to do - whatever it is they're going up there to do. But they have to fill out half a dozen forms each and send them off and no one can seem to decide who's supposed to do what. And now we've confused each other and I have to figure out what happened and fix it all. :smallsigh::smallannoyed:

Tell them that they filled in the wrong forms, and that they have to fill out the green D-56 authorisation form in triplicate and give it to your boss.

Fun times will be had by all :3

I did that in Paranoia, including quoting the whole "Vogon Saving his Mother from the Ravenous Blagblutter Beast of Traal" process.

Okay, random question time.

I need the name of an R18+ movie, plus the little description of why it has that rating. You know, the bit that says 'blood and guts themes' on it.

I'm a moderator on another forum and I'm doing up rules specific to my room. Part of that has included using the Australian Ratings System and I've got examples of all the other ratings using movies we have at home. However, we don't own any R18+ movies (and even if we did, I'm at work). So - I need the name of one quick!

Preferably nothing too disgusting as the R18+ notice is going in as an example of what's not allowed.

Thanking you and your odd taste in movies in advance

An old one is The Rock (probably now M or MA), a new one would be...Mental blank, wow.

If it's not any more that's not really going to help...

I wonder if I can search JB Hi-Fi's website by rating...

King Bill vol. 1 says R 18+ for ... medium level violence?

Some part of that just doesn't sound right.

Some foreign film has it for 'Medium Level Sex Scenes' and Pulp Fiction has it for various sins (drug use being the most prominent, I believe).

Kick Ass is R, as is... something else really good I've seen in the last couple of years... Oh yeah, Watchmen. Things like The Human Centipede, Antichrist and I'm sure at least one or two Saws are, too, but they're pretty obviously so.

Fight Club

R18+
Listed on the box as "Adult Themes"

They appealed the rating:
(Source: Wikipedia) Lost appeal for the MA15+ rating as it had adult themes of a high degree of intensity that were not discreet

Check out the page:

Look for failed (or successful as a counter example) R18+ to MA15+ appeals.

So, it turns out the CPU heatsink in my computer got shaken loose when it was thrown off the desk in the February earthquake. It's been operating intermittently ever since due to its automatic cutout when the CPU overheats. Finally got it repaired though, and I'm going to spend a large portion of tonight obliterating a few hundred Geth.

Lady Moreta: I think I remember what I might have said to you just before you left for the airport. Every flight I've been on recently has been at least 15 minutes late from it's scheduled (or rescheduled, when they were delayed, sometimes by over an hour) departure time. But, despite that, you always need to make sure that you are quite early!
