Previously the "It's Gwyn's Birthday" Random Banter #162 Thread!

Aaaawwwlriiiight! Let's get this party GOING!
Heh, going looks like it should be a silly sound effect.
Rules List

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

My parents are still firmly believers in "goth is evil" and "clubs are evil." While I technically could go without their permission, I would rather not have to deal with the fight.

I think I know what you mean, but on the off chance I don't, do you, or do you not still read OOTS?

Of course I do; it's a very good webcomic.

I will now repeat myself, "PURSUE YOUR DREAMS KOORLY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipy1ZJQeUcs)!!"

*drops off completely random post-shopping squee since she doesn't know where else to put it and runs off to fit her new petticoat*

That's so very fantastic. If I were the type to wear feminine things like that I'd so buy a petticoat too, poofy skirts are great.

I shall see Baking Brother in an hour and ask him.

Was Baking Brother the originator of "what are your opinions?"

We probs should get Baking Brother on here.

*waves to Cŵrli*

We should get the Baking Boy on here. I like him, then again, I liked everyone I met at the party. And he was the creator of that question too. He has good taste.
And a new nickname! Yay!

Now to go watch me some Classic Who.

Well, even though Thufir answered, I did, a lot.
Great DMs, great players, great scenarios. Very good introductions to proper tabletop gaming.
:smallcool:

French, yes.
Latin, I'm learning it myself (Classical, that is), so only if you don't mind being in a 'teaching it to ourselves' group.
Greek (Homeric), no.
I think dragonprime also knows Latin (ecclesiastical) and Greek (Koine).
I don't mind how I learn something at all. I'm somewhat of an autodidact.
Still, useful human resources. *Mind steal*

Also my first essay and reading list arrived. For Shakespeare. On the plus side, I'm back with the people in my year, so I get to interact with people!
People are nice to have around. I think so, anyway.

Interesting questions about dinosaurs in 1751/genetically engineered weasels (I take it that sprung from Thufir's party) and friendly/hostile squid!
I would certainly pick the dinosaur, just because. But which kind?
I think it would be brilliant to be a tyrannosaurus rex in the New World somewhere, munching upon succulent colonists.
My squid would be friendly towards me but hostile towards everyone else, giving me a ruthless killer to command as I like without any evidence of my involvement. I should hope to breed armies of Fred-serving squid, with which to lay siege to the most important cities on the planet. If I can control their outputs I can potentially control the entire ever-urbanising globe...

After several enjoyable hours at my friends house, it is time for me to head back and start brainstorming for the birthday gift I'm going to buy for my friend, who I'm also meeting today at his performance of The Hobbit. Unfortunately, my ride seems to have forgotten about me.

We work out the ride over the phone, and I get home, but was unable to be on the computer. I spend my time alternating between rereading a few books of mine, and dashing about trying to get another ride to where I need to be to go find something to give my friend for his birthday. My mother, who was intending to help by giving me a ride, has other ideas, something along the lines of "I'm going to stay here and chat with my friend for a few more hours".

I finally settle on a genuine Swiss Army Knife, but still need to rush downtown to purchase a whetstone to go with it. Fortunately, my other parental unit is available, but only if we go with my mother and her friend, to drop her off at her house (the one I had left earlier in the day).

So I wait.

Then everyone is ready, and I grab a whetstone and pay for it. I cause a minor explosion in the car on accident on the way back. (I have no idea why I had several exploding popper-things in my pocket, or why they all went off at once). I manage to get home without chopping off my head or anything, which is good.

Back at home, I'm in a rush to prepare, wrap and then walk off to the play, which is close enough for me to not need a ride, for once. My parents insist that I eat something though, and after obliging them, I take a teaspoon of plain Nutella as dessert. With one foot out the door I manage to get into an argument with my father, because I say that it is a crime to waste delicious bread just so that you can justify your eating of delicious Nutella. Eat the bread as its own good thing, not as some background to hold on the other good things when a spoon could do just as well I said. Walk off in a huff.

I get to the play, where, as a school thing for a school I don't know, feel very shy amongst all the parents who know eachother. It's even worse when several of them know my parents from the hippie community, so they know me, know my name, know who I am, and I have no idea what their names are. The play is in a park, and I neglected to bring a blanket, and arrived early because I wanted to be out of the house with my father in it. Let there be many awkward moments with the people I don't recognize offering me their blankets or chairs. I'm blushing to the roots of my hair by now.

The parents of my friend show up, and I say hello and continue standing. They offer me a spare chair next to them (it was going to be used by their youngest son, but for some reason he is was in a sleeping bag in the grass), and, after repeated coaxing I step up to the chair and sit down.

The bottom of the chair falls out the instant I touch it. If it had been done as a comedy move in animation it couldn't have been done any better. Including the long moment of silence and then tittering from everyone behind me (did I mention that this happened in the front row?). I jump up and start apologizing for wrecking their chair, while my friends mom is apologizing to me and saying I can still sit in it if we put something underneath it to keep it up. I, stammering and tripping over my own feet, back up and return to the back row, where I continue to stand. Several more people now, possibly feeling sorry for me and ashamed that they laughed are offering me garbage bags to sit on. I pull my hood over my face and pray that the play will start and I'll stop being the real life equivalent to and interesting montage while the game is loading.

The play starts, and while nicely done, is pretty much the regular fare for school plays. The kind where the parents only come because their children need to know they were watching because they feel tremendously proud of their hard work, where all the props are close approximations to what they need donated by the parents, and mainly only bearable if to have a chair and aren't expecting a great work of art. I had one half of that, and stood through the entire Hobbit waiting for there to be an ending so I could just give my friend his gift and go do something with him.

The play ends, and I find my friend with his family and I give him his present. It then turns out that he had injured his arm on a rock on Thursday, and will probably have a scar for life. It also seems that I had had a totally different plan from my friends family, who thought I was going with them to hang out at his house. I go along with their plan, and we get there after a long ride in the same car as a seven year old who threw everything he could reach at me and his brother.

Commence all long pleasant evening with barbecue and movies, pissed off older brother, Portal 2, annoying younger brother, sprained ankle, and so on. I get home at nine thirty, and nearly pass out on the ride home. I was in no state to talk to you all. So, I was right, I did only get back on the computer by the time there was a new RB, just in no way had I expected it to be like this.

depending on what kind of explosives you were carrying they could have gone off by your body heat+you sitting on it.

also, scars on elbows are not bad, your friend should not worry at all. My entire lower left arm, and especially my index finger is a map of little and big-ish scars and i never cared.

And nutella in itself is enough reason to eat it however you like.

I do have a theory now that the reason I want to spend so much time on the computer is because the universe really hates it when I get loose. The weather seems to have something against me, as it always starts raining when I decide to go outside. Why are they even over your head?

I sleep under a windowsill that functions as a bookshelf, cat playground, and the place where I keep my music player because there is a electric socket right below it. With a converter I can have my music play eternally charging while playing, and I can control it all with just the single on/off switch. The problemis that since my windowsill (along with the bookshelf imbeded
in my head board, my bedside table, my other beside table, and my two bookshelves) is overloaded with books, my speakers need to sit on top of them. Since my cats love to walk over there they occasionally knock off the top layer of books and my speakers a few times (as well as jumping on my head). Yesterday evening one was racing all over the house however, so my speakers got knocked off repeatedly, braining me each time.

You waited 'till the last day to buy a present?

Not intentionally. I only knew it was his birthday two days before, and due to scheduling errors they play had originally been meant to be on Saturday, where I was going to take him out for food and ask him if there was anything he particularly wanted. Then they moved the play to Sunday, when we had actually been planning to be going to a town with a renn-faire on that day. Only I hadn't known about the reschedule for most of Saturday, so I didn't go shopping because I still thought I'd be seeing him to get a less generalized idea of stuff he wanted.

I sympathize with you, so much.

Talky mothers. One time my friend's mom came over to pick her up, and then stood with my mother in the mudroom (we use it to keep our cats in) for two hours straight talking while my friend and I hung out. :smallsigh:

This sound incredibly surreal.

I lead a very strange life for a normal person.

I believe you've got a prop instead of a real chair.

I hope not. Props are even more expensive than real chairs.

I hope you get better, also, always bring candy everywhere, at least 3 of them, it controls little monsters and makes them less likely to attack you.

The last time I was at my friend's house (a year ago, he's not very good at remembering to invite people places) I was sleeping over for three nights with two other friends of his, so I'd brought some melatonin as I was still on a messed up schedule from my time in another country. The little brother, who was having a sleepover at the same time to be 'fair', he and his friends got into my pack, assumed they were candies, and ate the lot, even offering them to me and my friends before I realized what had happened upon looking into my pack and finding they were gone. Little brats could have killed themselves doing that.

And the parents have nothing to say on it? :smallconfused:
From my experience the more annoying a kid is, the more likely parents stop caring about their behaviours and more about the destruction they are likely to cause.

I think that fails the "things I can actually afford" test. My budget is pretty much limited to goodwill and salval.
Corsets are reasonably rather cheap, a burgundy shirt could easily be bought at Marshals for 10$

How can you hate the system if your aren't even in the part that's broken.

They?
I can because I still have to do the homework assigned by the broken part.
and Freudian Slip in that one I believe

I believe you'd be better off having piles of books in the floor instead of having them overloading a shelf which could dangerously collapse over you at any second.

That sounds rather convoluted.

Talky mothers. One time my friend's mom came over to pick her up, and then stood with my mother in the mudroom (we use it to keep our cats in) for two hours straight talking while my friend and I hung out. :smallsigh:I've had that happen, in a supermarket.

The stuff from my local organic bakery certainly is.
Or with spoons.
That sounds more like baked yeast than bread.
Nope, the spoon is like the bottom part of the sandwich, there is a Nutella top at the top and a Nutella filling in the middle. (I ate Nutella as breakfast lunch and dinner during my stay in Chiavari)

Yup. And I'm not the greatest with the names of people I last met when I was six, so it gets incredibly awkward at times.
Just use formal pronouns (oh wait, English has no formal you...)

I lead a very strange life for a normal person.
Or a very normal life for a peculiar individual.

I hope not. Props are even more expensive than real chairs.
Not always.

Trauma Team is the sequel of the sequel, it was good, but still, I've already gone through it's previous iterations quite methodically. Skyward Sword better be what it promises, the Wii has lost many great games and got some butchered up in the way by virtue of it's mechanical approach, so I better get my sword swinging game.

So, the most awesome birthday thread in the history of the Friendly Banter forum will conclude in half an hour, so I might as well change it about now.
Yesterday, I celebrated with family. My grandparents drove in from out of town, and I got $50 from them, I got 3 big history books of famous and important battles, with pretty pictures and diagrams and maps and such, I got an expansion for a game I like, and a gigantic new amp that both Moff Chumley and my punk friends disapprove of, on account of it being digital.

Then I was talking with a friend this morning, and he was like "yo, check your steam", and there was a brand new L4d2 sitting in mah thingy. And I was like "woooaaah"

And then I got to make this thread, and it made me really happy.
And then I was sitting on the internet when "BOOM" I was tackle hugged in my own basement by two of my friends, my best friend and my friend who got me the game. Then we went to the park, and met my best friend's girlfriend, and another friend, who had cupcakes, so we had a little picnic, then the girls went home, cause they had stuff to do, and then us guys played video games, had pizza and cake, and then mah best friend had to leave, so me and my other friend stayed up til 11 reading DM of the Rings, until we realized it was late and he better go.

I've always just considered it to be pretty "meh". The problem is that the difficulty curve is out of whack. Sometimes I'd get a few levels that were so mind bogglingly hard that I wondered whether or not there was an actual solution. Then right after these I would come across levels that took so little effort that I could have done them after having been hit in the brain with a wrench.

I hate it because of GLaDOS. I don't see the fun in a game where the game itself berates you every time you make a move, no matter how well you do, then never ever lets you feel satisfied. And at the end of it all? At the end of Portal 1, you get treated to the villain recovering without a hitch and a song about how 'she' will survive anyway. And at the end of Portal 2, you get a big song about how you suck and how everyone's glad you're going away forever.

English isn't your native language August?
In the linguistic sense no, Spanish is. However it's gotten to the point that English is more ingrained than Spanish is into my brain, I thank videogames the Internet and my utter lack of consideration of other language in MSN (even to my friends I talk in English).

I don't think I'm peculiar. My life is way to weird. :smalltongue:

I admit, I didn't care at all about the story. GLaDOS was fun for the occasional black humor, but I just enjoyed the puzzles. One thing that I've never understood is why people freak out so much over the companion cube. When I was ordered to get rid of it I just did. I'm not sure why people got attached. To me it was an annoying block that I had to lug around.

Think of the Natural Numbers, you've got to count each one of them in order and group them in any criterion that repeats itself without leaving voids (numbers ending in 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 for example). You cannot simply skip and say infinite, you've gotta do this for each number.

I really should pay more attention to this place. I spend a couple days caught up in my blog, and what happens? We move all the way into a new thread with six pages! I've been here for over four years, but the ability of RB to totally ambush me with way too many new posts never stops surprising me.

We got two pages into the new thread in the time it took me to have a shower yesterday.

Strange man. How do you know all this?

:smallfrown: I need Korli and/or Phase. They appreciate my G&S references.
Or other people I guess, but those two are the two G&S enthusiasts who have been regular RB posters in the past.

Definitely not. It was multiplayer, so had a totally different plot, on an X-box, which I'd never used before, first person which made me queasy, and I had no idea what was going on. That damn game doesn't explain anything, you just drop off and GLaDOS doesn't give you a hint. I hated the whole damn thing it SUCKED.

:smallmad:
It's simple. You make portals, things go through portals. That's it!
I'll grant you the co-op would be somewhat more difficult if you hadn't already done the single player or at least some of it.
And it should only be played on PC, XBox can go jump in the sea for all I care.

Then right after these I would come across levels that took so little effort that I could have done them after having been hit in the brain with a wrench.

I assume you mean Portal 2 rather than the original? I felt the difficulty curve was fine in the original, but I'll grant that in the sequel it was less so, partly because they'd reset to things being easy every time they had to introduce a new puzzle element, of which there were numerous.

I hate it because of GLaDOS. I don't see the fun in a game where the game itself berates you every time you make a move, no matter how well you do, then never ever lets you feel satisfied. 1) GLaDOS is brilliant.
2) She's not that abrasive in the original. In fact she's rather friendly. But creepy. She starts berating you more in the second game, but she does it so brilliantly that who cares really?
3) She's the antagonist. It's not the game berating you in any case, it's the antagonist, who you're supposed to be working to defeat. That's pretty standard. If you play a Sonic game, you don't expect Robotnik to congratulate you on how good a job you're doing of destroying his stuff, do you?

Cave johnson > GLaDOS

Who cares, they're both awesome.

I am a moron, and stupid, and idiotic and why do I even -

I just don't even know why I do any of this.

When I went to Video Games Live last fall, they played Still Alive with a whole orchestra, and the whole theater sang along. It was epic.

Man, why couldn't they have done that when I was in VGL?

They didn't do it the first time I went about 2 years ago, but last fall they did. It was awesome.

And it should only be played on PC, XBox can go jump in the sea for all I care.

What about the PS3? It's on that, and it has the ability to play multiplayer with the PC. Without that I'd have to try and beat Multiplayer by myself.

Thufir, that is the most adorable thing I've seen this morning.

More *hugs* for Koorly. :smallfrown:

And I've only recently discovered the joys of Portal (1). Little Brother got it for me last Christmas, but I've only just gotten around to playing. Made for a good distraction on the 10 hour flight between China and Turkey, and the 8 hour flight between Israel and the U.S.

...wow, I've done a lot of country-hopping this summer. :smalleek:

Now none of those things are true at all.

Either way I shall grant you a hug. *hugs* I hope you feel better.

Note to self: Insults directed at one's own person result in hugs.

Kidding aside, none of those things are true. Hug, just in case your rib cage is still intact after everyone else's hugs. :smalltongue:

Hey LaLa (whenever you see this), go read some Gantz and listen to We Can Work it Out by the Beatles at the same time. It's the weirdest thing ... Weird, but funny. A little psychedelic even.
