[Steam] Thread XXV

⏎ Steam Groups

There's a variety of groups on Steam that certain members from this forum have created related to these games, ranging from vague to actually useful. If you'd like to be part of these, either ask a member of the group you wish to join, or message one of the Administrators there. Or create a new group for a game that hasn't been listed, or otherwise fills a niche. A few of these listed here;

Also I got to play a couple hours of Deus Ex today, on a computer capable of actually running HR. Pretty great.

Left a large body count, though. I am terrible at stealth. Also at the actual shooty part of the game.

So basically all of it except talking to people.

A notice to all you Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad Deluxe Edition owners:

The Open Beta is now available to download and enjoy. The Beta should be present in your Steam Library, and is approximately 4000 Mb, according to Steam downloads. The news page should also provide some hotfixes and advice if you encounter problems with starting up the game.

Those of you who have the original Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 will find that you have been automatically given the Russian Guards Badge and the German Assault Badge to make yourselves more visible to the enemy snipers and machineguns.

It is also recommended that you set all bolt-action rifles to manual bolt. This is to further immerse yourselves in gut-wrenching panic and to be able to bolt your rifle when you damn well please.

Left-control will bandage your wounds, should you live long enough to accrue wounds. If you find yourself unable to bandage yourself, either because the wound is too grave, or if you have run out of bandages, feel free to either cower in your still cooling pool of blood or go out in a blaze of glory.

Enjoy your short, painful life, whilst achieving absolutely nothing in-game. I hope to see some of you on a server soon. I of course, will be a rifleman, bolting my rifle when I damn well please.

As Scuzzball said, I chose to replace the chip at LIMB because I thought "It's just a game, they wouldn't screw me over THAT much.

They did.

Sarif ending is my favourite. Suicide ending is just painful to watch. He didn't need to kill himself, or destroy Panchaea. A mix of the Sarif and Suicide endings seems to be canon.

I am playing the first game in preparation for getting the new one, and I must say I'm in a similar boat - stealth-pacifism is hard. It would be easier if the game gave me some goddamn tranq darts before open areas with five paramilitary dudes with assault rifles - a baton just doesn't cut it!

Though I've managed to only have to actually kill three people up to now. But this is more due to a willingness for continuous trial and error than any kind of skill ^^u

SPOILERS WITHIN
I noticed that everyone suffered from the glitches at the same time - characteristic of a broadcast attack, not biological degradation. I thought "Are the Deus Ex people clever enough to make this a clue and not just a Did Not Do The Research?" And yes, yes they were.

I was extremely pleased when Zhou points the remote and Jensen just sort of says "Was that supposed to incapacitate me or something?" She looked so shocked. =3

That boss fight is really hard anyway - until you realise that wall-hax-o-vision shows invisible people as well as hidden ones, and then it's not difficult at all.

I learned to distrust Wall-Hax-O-Vision since the fight with Rihanna was in a magical computer room where it was useless. I'm doing my second runthrough right now and until your comment about using that aug during this boss battle, it would have never crossed my mind to use it during a post-Rihanna boss battle. Deus Ex HR is a great game but a bunch of the things surrounding boss battles are noticeably jammed in without rhyme or reason. It's really incongruous with the rest of the game since the non-boss bits are so consistent in their gameplay and tactics possibilities.

Very little, frankly. Your mileage may vary (I believe warty_goblin has come out and said he enjoyed the game a lot), but I found it dull and repetitive with some really annoying mechanics (like the constantly-respawning guard posts that make it impossible to drive for more than 100 yards without having to get out and shoot things--reminds me of Cliff Racers in Morrowind!).

Yeah, I did feel the boss battles were a little forced - I missed the original Deus Ex, where a bit of cunning ahead of time could completely short-circuit boss battles. That was rewarding.

So I'm continuing with the first Deus Ex. And honestly, this game is starting to piss me off :smallannoyed:.

I have killed precisely three people in the whole game up to now, and one of them wasn't even me, it was another agent gunning down a guy I missed - and the game keeps treating me like a mass murderer focused on body count and Denton keeps talking like a psycho happy to gun down people, never mind I haven't actually used a gun in the game up to now!

I just took down a whole warehouse full of people with assault rifles with a baton, people, solely because you won't deign to give me tranq darts and I refuse to kill! Little respect here? :smallmad:

"Stick with the prod. Prod with the prod. The GEP gun is the best option for a silent takedown."

I jest.

Still, it's always been a slight problem with video games regarding 'multiple choices' and allowing for lethal/non-lethal approaches. There is a definite counter or flag that is raised when you kill or knock someone out, so the game tracks that.

It is a classic flaw with Deus Ex and other 'morality gaming' systems (such as the orginal Bioshock with it's Little Sisters,) that picking certain options will condemn you to a murderer's reputation, the psychopath's path, and so on.

I suggest ignoring the early game because it's stupid. Don't let it get to you.

Later on people start being perfectly fine with mass murder, for what it's worth.

Drascin
2011-09-01, 05:37 AM
Yeah, Byrn, but normally, the option to be a psycho forever is very clearly delineated and can't be triggered by accident. Here it appears that an accident and a single desperation move are enough to screw you up forever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmRYccuXWNA&feature=related).

EDIT at Cog: But most are perfectly fine with mass murder already! That's the whole problem - these guys couldn't have a bigger EVIL sign on their heads if they had a flag with a Rick Dastardly moustache, and they're congratulating me on being a ruthless killing machine - and the character I'm playing, the one who keeps eating bullets to his leg instead of taking perfectly easy sniper shots with zero risk just so he doesn't kill people, insists on also talking like them!

It gets me seriously dislocated.

Was just lurking, and far cry 2 posts caught my eye. I still remember that damn car-bolt, where even if your car has no doors left, has been shot at by a rocket launcher and is still in one piece, you just turn that bloody bolt and everything is OK and you can drive at max speed again.

Also, taking out bullets heals you, even though you don't bandage yourself so you should bleed to death, especially if you inject yourself with adrenalin, then you bleed to death faster.

At the time a few years back, they tried to market it as being realistic and gritty. It really was a pathetic flump, my 2 cents.

I would convince you not to buy it, but it sounds like it's too late :/

Paul, I.... I.... I... thought you were a GEP gun.

The problem is the way the game handles the checks. For example, in the second mission you get "sociopathic Rambo" if you enter the main gate, even if you knock everyone out or run by them, and even if you only go through it after you get the ambrosia crate. Then the game stops caring altogether; you'll hear things like "all those terrorists you just killed" even in hardcore pacifist runs.

That said, nonlethal in Deus Ex doesn't get that difficult until you try to save Paul.

Against single enemies, stay out of their line of sight, walk up to about 4m away, then crouch and walk the rest of the way. Hit them in the back (not legs, not arms, not head) with the baton for a one-hit KO even at untrained (on normal, anyway). The coalition prod is useful for when you can't sneak up or if there are multiples - zap them once, then run behind them and baton them (to save prod charges). Move silent is a waste - get speed and upgrade it and just run while crouching.

Against groups gas grenades are very useful - try to disarm the ones you find in the statue. I've found the tranq darts inefficient because they alert people to your presence. Hacking and general evasion are also good. If you have shifter, the pepper spray is hilariously good, otherwise completely useless.

WHAT? YOU CAN WHAT?
In that situation my first plan was to knock Paul out with the prod and carry him out the window. You know, because you can't carry conscious people. But he had that forcefield thing, so I just ran like he told me.

Or am I misinterpreting and this is a much later spoiler. Still need to finish this game....

Or am I misinterpreting and this is a much later spoiler. Still need to finish this game....There's actually two ways to save Paul during the MJ12 attack on the 'Ton:
1. Run out into the hallway and suicide on the MiBs quick enough that the deathcam animation finishes before they can gun down Paul. He'll surrender rather than sacrifice himself to save you (since you're obviously already dead).
2. If you'd rather do the fight with Gunther at the hostage-crisis subway area, you can mine the approach to Paul's room so that most or all of the initial MiB rush dies to LAMs (mind the civilians!), then weed out the rest with ... any weapon more substantial than your pistol, really. So long as the MiBs don't kill Paul while you're in the 'Ton and you don't leave via the window with MiBs still kicking around, Paul survives (and is in fact invincible for the rest of the game).
If Paul lives, you meet him again in the MJ12 base and a few times further on. At MJ12 in particular he gives you the hint that you should look for Gunther's killphrase to avoid (another) fight with him. Anna's, too, if you didn't turn her into a smoking pile of giblets during the confrontation on Lebedev's jet.

Bizzarely Clear Sky's DRM wanted me to insert games CD and even that was weiled because when i had other CD/DVD in DVD player game just crashed instead... :smallfurious:

Once i found out it wants original CD it took me just about 10mins to fix it.

Shame they are preventing PAYING customers from playing their game.

I just had my worst experience on Two Fort since I got the game. Never going to a premium server again. No matter how interesting it is to watch pigs fly, heavies should not run like scouts. Or hold enough ammo to constantly fire his minigun for the whole match, and still be able to out run a soldier. *Shiver*

EDIT - Being held down at spawn by a single engineer because he set up seven level three sentries is absurd. That is all.

I hear the kids talking about some "Chocolate Hammer" thingamajig. You may want to look into getting yerself one of those. You'll only ever have ONE fort, it'll be RED, and people will complain about it all day long!

(I'll never get the appeal of 2fort. I can only condone 1v1 demoknight matches on that map, and even then...)

Sorry, I meant Two Fort as in Team Fortress two, my bad. The map was Gold Rush, but yeah I like the map Two Fort. The problem was less about the map and more about the heavy medic team that both run like scouts and uber every thirty seconds, the engineer that controls roughly three to seven sentries at a time. *Mumble* Premium *Mumble*

Hmm. Disappointed Steam isn't smart enough to not send me invitations to play games I don't own.

As to 2fort, I'm OK with it sometimes if I'm not feeling like playing seriously. And I'll often go on a 2fort server if I'm just trying to unlock a specific achievement (Mostly the taunt kills - sniper balconies). But not for serious play.
Also, thinking about it, CTF is probably my least favourite game mode.

My favorite things in Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad

- Extremely patriotic Russian music playing in the background. All the time. UUURAAA- *is shot*
- Exceptional free-aiming system, allowing you to miss hitting each other at all ranges.
- Some of the finest bolting actions ever introduced in a game, allowing you to bolt your rifle when ever you damn well please.
- The most morale boosting battle chatter to have been scripted:

"I'd kill for a drop of water..." When running around.
"N-no... t-this isn't fair... this isn't fair..." When dying slowly from a wound.
"AAAAAAAAAAGHGHHH... AAGGGHHAHH" Random line, when shot.
NOOOO! BROTHERS!" When your comrades are gunned down before you.

Last question: How many of you would be willing to play in a TF2 league?

I had the strangest day yesterday. I worked hard all morning, then 1cc'ed a Touhou game for the first time in one attempt having not played the games for 2 months. Then I worked some more, then was dragged out pistol shooting at 9:30 at night (yes it was dark). Then I got home, chatted for an hour, and got dragged off to places unknown and then found myself playing the origional StarCraft with my cousins and their friends from 1am to 6am. I had not played that game for a DECADE and didn't like it before anyways (my opinion has changed).

Wow, what a day.

Okay, guys. How do we want to go about getting people together for L4D2 games? People rarely seem to respond to Steam Group announcements/events for games, and then we resort to spamming our friends list which a) doesn't filter people who don't have L4D2 and b) can easily annoy people who legitimately don't want to play and have already chosen to ignore the game forming.

Also, didn't we already have a similar conversation about using the ChHa group vs using the L4D2 group? We have a L4D2 group specifically for announcing L4D2 games, but putting a notification in the ChHa main group seems to get better results while also drawing ire for not putting it in the "proper" place.

So, how's this gonna go down, guys? Ideas? Opinions? Non sequiturs?

Totally missed this thread. I literally never saw Blackfox's post in the last one. Odd.

Anyway, was just popping into say I finished Batman: Arkham Asylum. Neat game. Many goons were punched.

I can never feel terribly satisfied beating a villain in this game. I mean, we all know each and every one of them is going to come back. I never left a villain thinking "Well, that's the last I've seen of HER!" I lock Harley Quinn in a cell? Well, that's where she was at the beginning of the game, wasn't it? Scarecrow gets grabbed by Killer Croc and dragged into the sewer? Sure, sure. I'll probably catch him on the elevator ride back up. Poison Ivy gets drawn into her little pit? I never got her with the antidote! She could get back up at any second!

That's my only quibble, though. All the little nods to just about every Batman villain imaginable was neat. I'm not exactly a Batman aficionado, so I certainly learned a lot.

I'll have to go back in to collect everything later. Just to see how annoyed the Riddler can get.

Yeah very appropriate game for Frictional to post about.

I managed to finish it getting nearly caught once, five signs can be found at:

-One at the edge of the woods you start in. Head to the right from where you start off facing.

-One can be found on the building just outside the woods.

-One can be found on the big tree in the middle of the map at bottom of the hill.

-One can be found in the middle of the icy lake at the bottom of the same hill. (Very hard to find, use the bell sound to help you, you might want to go for this one first as it leaves you very exposed if there are too many guards about).

-One can be found on the church at the top of the hill.

Make sure u dont have any Steam game running because downloading automaticly pauses and cant be resumed while u running any game through STEAM.

If it doesnt help exit Steam and logon again. right click game ur downloading and select resume updating.

Well, depending on the game, it can just make the cursor invisible; it'll turn visible if it goes outside the window, and if you CLICK outside the window (not realizing it's escaped), it'll minimize/stop the game/make you lose control and die. This can happen a lot with poorly optimized online flash games.

The better optimized games, hopefully, lock the cursor in place.

A small part of me wants to say that some people require more licks, due to differences in tongue size, the speed at which a tongue can lick a tootsie-pop, the differing consistencies of saliva, the feel of an individual tongue and the flavour of tootsie pop.

That would be a legendary amount of suckage to get reset.

At one point I had the '50 Scout kills with needlegun' and '50 Medic kills with bonesaw' achievements reset when I was at about 40 for both. I still don't have them to this day, despite their nerfing. It's too depressing.

A few other little ones got reset, too, but my 'one million healing' achievement progress stayed intact, luckily.

BUT JIBAR. Some games still have MANUALS. Collectible, highly detailed and informative manuals.

I miss the days when PC games had manuals describing how to do everything in a game, from walking to picking up things and placing them in the inventory. Changing stances, using spells, entire sections dedicated to characters and weapons.

Huge manuals, the size of miniature dictionaries, with colour (or black and white,) pictures and diagrams. Massive game aides, with code upon code for when games still used manual based copy protection. Feelies with actual collectible merchandise like coins and 'written notes' from the characters. Those humongous reference guides for educational games like "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?"

I miss when video game shops only sold PC games, and that feeling you got when you walked into the store, when you got that little buzz in the air from all the electric stuff around you, and all these cardboard boxes were stacked on the shelves.

It has to be said, it wouldn't be quite such a sucky move if Game hadn't relegated PC games to one shelf rack at the back corner of the store (if you're lucky)...I pretty much only go in there these days to see if they have anything cool in the "3 for £10" section!

Yeah, I poke my head in Game from time to time to see if they've got any good used console games in, but nothing more.

If I was the publisher of Space Marine (THQ?) I'd be inclined to give Game the finger and sell it only through online channels. Oh - unless it's on consoles as well as PC. Then it would make sense to cave to their market power.

TF2 updated again:

Team Fortress 2

Reorganized the tabs in the Mann Co. Store into Bundles, Guns, Hats, Misc, Tools, and Maps to make it easier to find specific items
Added a new Hot Items tab to the Mann Co. Store to show real-time popularity of items in the Mannconomy
The Diamondback now correctly gets guaranteed crits if an Engineer changes class while their buildings are sapped
Fixed a bug that would cause the Gunslinger to draw a normal Engineer hand first-person sometimes when wielding other weapons
Fixed a server crash related to bots
Fixed a client crash related to breakables/gibs
Added item sets to the GetSchema WebAPI
Updated the Spiral Sallet to be equippable by all classes

And then sometimes, just for kicks, you fill a trailer with the most ripe, most powerful pig faeces you have and just do loops around the town so there can be no escape as the pigsmell descends upon all.

Dungeons of Dredmor updated at last.

Especially notable changes: Mage builds nerfed in a couple of ways (Obvious Fireball nerfed, more resistances on monsters so you can't just Promethean/Blood Mage your way through absolutely everything- Psionics probably better, since it can do two or three kinds of damage in a single tree?)
Black Pearls can be Ingot Grinder'd into Chalk. Smiths enjoy being a little bit more reliable; Smith/Alchemists make all the Steel they want. Also, Smithing can make throwing weapons, so you don't have to be a Tinker to get a reliable supply of ranged alternatives.

New Achievements, including:
I Didn't Ask For This
Equip two Clockwork Power Limbs, Two Clockwork Chain Axes, and a Clockwork Bolt Thrower.

BRB, playing dual-wield axe/tinker/smith (also I wish the Clockwork Bolt Thrower was craftable.. Steel Ratchet Crossbow + 3 more Brass Mechanisms at Tinker level 6, maybe.)

IMHO, Thief 2 and System Shock 2 are both better than Deus Ex. My problem with DE was that it seemed to be doing *too much* and thus became a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, rather than trying to be really good at one particular thing. Zero punctuation recently reviewed Deus Ex, in preparation of reviewing the first one. He also didn't consider it the best game of all time, I think Minecraft got a better review from him.

Something I don't understand about deus ex: why are there cigarettes EVERYWHERE. I have a slightly similar issue with candy bars and soda, but at least there is a use for them. The cigarettes just seemed prevalent and useless. Reminded me a bit like the commander keen "grab all the candy" games but with cigarettes and alcohol added. Felt like I should have been smoking and drinking when I was playing, and I don't mean in the game.

As I said, it's a really good game, just not the best thing ever. But yeah, I agree with you.

I'd call Deus Ex both terrible and excellent, personally - and I have Fawkes to thank for that way of putting it, by the by - in that it's good in some respects, but really, really awful in others (story, voice acting and a couple other things) in a way that, if you're not taking the game terribly seriously, actually improves it.

And no, sorry, I do not consider the plot a masterpiece.

Please add me then......I've never played Team fortress with a real human before!

Also, I recently got a ton of animes off a friend, and a couple other movies (One of which was SUPPOSED to be blade runner, but he somehow forgot. I've never seen blade runner, only heard that it's great.)

Anyway, here's a list of them. He says they're all good, but are there any that are "Must watch" compared to the others?

Anime:

Grave of the fireflies
Howls moving castle
Kiki's delivery service
Laputa
Lupin 3: Castle of cagliostro
My neighbor totoro
My neighbors the yamadas
Nausicaa of the vally of the wind
Only yesterday
Panda! Go panda!
Pom Poko
Porco Rosso
Princess mononoke
Spirited away
The cat returns
Whisper of the heart

Non-Anime:

Cats Don't dance
Frankenstein (The classic black and white one....not sure of the year)
Manhunter
Pulp fiction
The prince of egypt

Also MLP:FiM season 1 about a week ago. 14 episodes in, and Twilight is my favorite so far, applejack close behind.

I haven't seen any of these, and he didn't have time to tell me which to check out, so if anybody has seen some of these, some recommendations would be nice, since there are so many.

The only Anime on that list I have seen (Not that I don't like the genre, I just don't know where to start) is Spirited Away, which I remember (Read: Saw around three years ago) being fairly good, even if a few parts run on Nightmare Fuel. None-Anime, Pulp Fiction and Prince of Egypt are pretty good.

The iron giant is probably one of my favorite movies ever, it's just so good.

I'll watch Nausicaa of the vally of the wind, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away sometime this weekend (I don't watch much anime, mostly for the same reason as gamerlord, as I would like to get into them, just not knowing where to start is the issue) Unless Dragonball Z counts, I watched lots of that.

After that, I'll try out Blade runner (assuming I can get it tomorow), Pulp fiction (Good friend said it was his favorite movie), and Cats don't dance (Because Lauren Faust is pretty great) Along with the other as decided by a RNG.

Any others on the list I should bump up to the top?

Edit: Grave of the fireflies, Howls moving castle, and My neighbor totoro will be watched as well. I'm not going outside this weekend, am I?

[Other games and] System Shock 2 are both better than Deus Ex. My problem with DE was that it seemed to be doing *too much* and thus became a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, rather than trying to be really good at one particular thing. Oh, and even for the time the graphics in DE sucked massively, but that's purely an aesthetic thing!

Second. System Shock 2 is AMAZING beyond my comprehension, and still holds up incredibly well, but it will kill any OCD-affected individuals with the mentally established requirement of "OMG LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED". Fact.

AS FOR THE GRAPHICS of Deus Ex, they're crap. Two years later, we get Unreal 2, and our minds are blown forever. In fact, it still looks solid. New Vision is the first thing I got for DE before I even played the game*, and the Direct X10 patch makes the game mind-blowing-ly BEAUTIFUL. The mod that adds new models also assists in making a varied game even better looking, and a couple tweaks here and there made gunplay more interesting, instead of training my pistol on them for 10 seconds before I screw up and blow my cover to high hell. A skill point rebalance and the merger of Rifles and Pistols into one skill (dubbed "Firearms") made the game that much more fun.
*You need to boot it up ONCE in order to install mods, I know, I know. I did that, just to configure the graphical settings and stuff.

I'll take the GEP gun.

Yes, yes, I know you will.

Also, Space Marine for the Pc has a swear filter. I'm not sure what was going through the minds of the devs when they did that, since SM lets you cut open orks like they're presents on christmas morning, gore being the present inside.

And this isn't a wordfilter that blocks racism or something, it specifically blocks both "Damn" and some creepy-twisting of the tale "Rumplestiltskin", except having to do with male body parts. Nobody has ever said the later word before......

I'm not going to link to this list, as it contains many potty words, but a quick google search should find it. I seriously have no clue how they even thought of the Rumplestiltskin swear.....
