How To Random Banter:
Rules of the Random Banter Thread

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

@V: Is that better?

@Drakeburn: Sweetheart, when you copy pasted the first post over all the links to previous threads got left out and you forgot to link to the previous RB.
Now this is all done, go quote the first post of RB#189, copy-pasta the whole thing and edit the relevant bits into your post here.

Indeed. That ad is getting me really P.O.'d. I don't like it. I agree with anyone who doesn't like it, because screw that ad.

Wait, whats wrong with webcomics? This "Connie" feller is a strange strange person. Hating on webcomics and.. Well, nerddom. Go walk into some other persons room and complain about their beowsing habits.:smallannoyed:

I cant speel. Gah. Damn ipad.

*eyeroll*
Tell me about it. Worst thing?
Connie (who for all intents and purposes is now female for ease of reference regardless of actual RL sex and gender) is younger than me by about, oh, eleven months. And yet she proselytising about the unsuitable nature of my hobbies.
That's not saying I don't occasionally browse things considered unsuitable for children, but she's the youngest person in the house!
And somewhat miraculously for a twenty-something year old she still doesn't have a grasp on advertising on websites. Or adblock.

I wonder how she would react if I informed her that a major field of my personal studies focuses on incest?

Long story short, annoying nosy person is annoying and nosy. I am honestly beginning to wonder if she's have a fit of the vapours if she caught me watching Repo! The Genetic Opera while browsing through my Discworld/Gaiman/Doctor Who things.
They're all so inappropriate for a person my age!

Ah, a new thread!

*boogies*

In other news, I have fallen prey to some foul disease. Can't say I'm happy with this, given that I would prefer to be fully functional during my one week of break. Ah well, I suppose I can sit back and relax while experiencing the joy of studying Latin grammar.

I need a smoke. :smallsigh:

edit: In other other news, I have taken up tabletop wargaming. There goes all my money. On the bright side, four other seminarians are starting this hobby with this, so at least I have some friends with whom I can share the joys of bankruptcy. :smalltongue:

edit 2.0: Also, salve CirrataKitPuella! Though if Google Translate is to be believed, there is a Latin word for "kit", so perhaps you are CirrataLoculaPuella? I will need to consult one of several big books o' Latin back at the seminary.

You chose to make the new thread, so it's your duty to do it. So don't just complain about it, considering it was your choice to make the new thread.

It's not that difficult to do all the links. Just copy and paste the code from the previous first post. It takes less than 5 minutes.

Quote the OP from the last page and add the latest thread. And you chose to do the new thread, you have to do this. This isn't a job, or a chore, you volunteered to do something people tend to argue over wanting to do.

-snip, this "Connie" person-

Doesn't understand... online advertising? :smallconfused:

Um... I don't have anything on hand for you to hit her with. Sorry. :smallamused:

If she's got problems with Discworld or Dr. Who, of all things, then let her faint.

My friend, it's not as hard as you're making it out to be; quote the first post of the last thread, and edit out the quote tags. There's no need to click on every single one. :smalleek:

Edit: I got the living crap ninja'd out of me here. Pardon me, Drakeburn; I think it'll be quite thoroughly beaten to death by the time you read this.

ION: And a simple question would have saved me an hour and a half of unproductive noodling... :smallsigh: Well, not entirely unproductive. I got a melody down for part of it.

DB: copy everything within and including the following spoiler tags, then add at the end of the list the latest thread. Don't complain about a privilege you took upon.

And yes, I agree about not putting hate in the OP. I mean, I agree, Twilight is the worst, but is that really the note to start on?

Ostriches do not nom penguins, though. Leopard seals do - and they do quite a good job of it, too. I'd link a pic, but it's rather against the forum rules against graphic violence.

Ostriches can fight lions. They're the one thing stopping giant Lovecraftian penguins too big for the seals to eat.

Leopard seals would be even worse at adapting to non-antarctic inland conditions than the penguins.

The ostriches don't need to plan on stopping the penguins, an ostrich could kill a penguin by tripping over it. A herd(?) of ostriches could run through a flock(?) of penguins leaving a trail of devastation and not even noticing.

Look, we're talking giant penguins with sniper rifles and land mines here. The ostriches will lose as soon as they try to charge the penguins' fortress.

Leopard seals can be almost four meters long and weigh 1300 pounds. If the penguins are too big for them to eat, then the ostriches won't even slow those penguins down.

The ostriches don't need to charge. Just think of them as an enviromental hazard. Anyway, how do your penguins plan to defeat hippopotamuses?

Well, a platypus is pretty small compared to a leopard seal, maybe they can just absorb the poison by sheer body mass. After all, I eat and drink a bunch of stuff that'd kill me in larger quantities.

Indeed. That ad is getting me really P.O.'d. I don't like it. I agree with anyone who doesn't like it, because screw that ad.

What's wrong with webcomics?

It's the only ad on here that caught my eye, but that was just because it seems very out of place on this website. I get the gist of what it's advertising and I don't think it's supposed to be there but I'm not sure.

All comics are awesome in my book, though I got called a nerd for having to explain a computer virus related XCKD venn diagram after finding it vaguely funny.

They're all so inappropriate for a person my age!

Your post implies you're over 20. That sort of statement doesn't really apply anymore. :smallconfused:

Do you really need to put in that you hate Twilight? :smallmad:

Funny thing is even I don't hate Twilight and the bookshop has 3 full sets of the books which people rarely ask for anymore. If it's not a book one wants to read, then one can go read another book. There are a really vast number of books out there, getting hung up on the commercialisation of an average yet really quite popular book series is not worth it because it happens all the time. Need I remind you that Fifty Shades series exists? Why don't people mass hate on that? It's not worth it.

Australia has a whole lot of coastline.

Platypuses are more river creatures so you won't see many on the coastline being eaten. As far as I know, they're also endangered, so you won't see many anyway.

If it'd be that devastating to her psyche, I vote do it. Who knows, you may even change her life for the not-horrible.

It's doubtful. It sounds horrible, but it seems some people are just like that though I do recommend watching Repo! the Genetic Opera again anyway because it's good.

1: It's a platypus

2: The Duckbilled part implies that there are Platypus without duck bills. Can you imagine a normal Platypus but with, say, a flamingo beak!!?

Not that I've watched much of the show, but Rarity is the sort of character I wouldn't associate with in person at all. Applejack though, I wouldn't mind. I might be biased on that one, having grown up with a few people like her. We wouldn't be best pals, but still.

Fluttershy to me isn't a character I would love. Then again, I'm not the sort to have watched enough of the show to grow to love Fluttershy, and she really seems like that kinda character.

Do you really need to put in that you hate Twilight? :smallmad:

Well, she can be very annoying from time to time, and prone to fits of paranoid insanity.

I wonder how she would react if I informed her that a major field of my personal studies focuses on incest?

You mean Medieval history?

Hopefully you'll get better soon.

Well, if you're going to bankrupt yourself doing something, you might as well have other friends to share the joys associated with it.

Likely the Latin for kit, as in a set of tools for performing a task, not kit as in the diminutive of cat.

And yes, I agree about not putting hate in the OP. I mean, I agree, Twilight is the worst, but is that really the note to start on?

Now, that's a bit harsh... As previously mentioned, she's prone to paranoia, but she's not a bad person...

... I could have SWORN that said "island." Perhaps I need sleep.
I feel like platypi (platypusses? Platypeople? You know what I mean) would be difficult to eat, due to their poison spines.

Perhaps the seal by chance went after a female platypus? Only the males have venom.

Damn... You beat me to it...

Anyway... News from my life... On Tuesday, we find a four or five foot long snakeskin in the eaves at the bottom of the back stairs. Apparently, we have a carpet snake slithering around somewhere. Which is good, as it will keep down the vermin.
It also solves another mystery; one of our cats was terrified of going out the back door, so she must have smelled it hanging around.
Also, the bananas are flourishing, thus attractive honeyeaters to their flowers, the tibouchina is in flower, the roses are doing lovely, the passionfruit vine is thriving, and the bare patches that we had in the back lawn have taken on moss and grass and shall soon be gone.
And yesterday, I was taken to the local gaming store for my birthday and purchased about twenty dollars of Magic cards and a box for them. Amidus in particular will appreciate the box as it is bacon themed.

Oh, and on the topic of ponies: You are all completely incorrect. There is no one best pony and there is no worst pony. We all have our own opinions, and it should be left at that.

Banana trees are cool as long as you don't want to grow anything in that area for a while.

There are a lot of custom themed boxes about the place, not just the Ultra Pro or more official MtG ones. I very highly recommend getting deck sleeves (make sure there are at least 75 for your deck and sideboard) because sometimes accidents happen. Some cards are worth $20+ you know!

Bacon is great. I have been known to cook bacon at 3AM before. We actually had someone visit for a week and sleep in the room right next to the kitchen... They didn't get much sleep on weekends because when I'm awake, I'm almost constantly eating.

Alas Drexel, were you to be in an area of Australia I could visit I would play MtG with you too but as far as I know you're in a different timezone. Oh well... Though I highly recommend you look up cockatrice to play with your online buddies if you can't get enough of playing MtG and don't want to spend dosh on MTGO.

Hmm, the more I clean my desk the more cluttered it becomes!

EDIT:

The Duckbilled Platypus is one of my favorite animals, for two very important reasons.

1: It's a platypus

2: The Duckbilled part implies that there are Platypus without duck bills. Can you imagine a normal Platypus but with, say, a flamingo beak!!?

But it's not a duckbilled platypus, and don't let Serpentine here you say that it is. The duck-billed bit is sometimes added by people, despite it not being the actual name or there being any other species of platypus.

The name "platypus" is often prefixed with the adjective "duck-billed" to form duck-billed platypus, despite there being only one species of platypus.

It's simple. It's a shortening of a diminutive.
For example: Cat - kitten - kitty cat - kitty - kit.

Well, you see... I have no idea, actually.

It's a conspiracy against me. People are trying to limit my temporal power on this plane of existence, seeking to limit me to merely a source of wisdom and knowledge.

They're not that expensive. And there are some good cards out right now.
There's the Innistrad block and the Return to Ravnica block, both of which are quite good.
Anyway... My friend spent twenty-three dollars on cards and I got quite a number, too many in fact for the deck I was trying to build. (Just so you know, it was only twenty cents on average per card.)

I'm talking about the series. Not the pony who does whatever the hell it is ponies do.

I know. But it makes me feel better to occasionally pretend it wasn't published. And seeing as it was only a teen romance novel, I'm allowed to be a bit silly about it from time to time. Same with MLP. That's only a cartoon show, so I can be silly about it as well.

Your post implies you're over 20. That sort of statement doesn't really apply anymore. :smallconfused:

Childish things, including the fear of seeming childish. Yadda, yadda.

Well, it was mass-mocked, just on a smaller scale. Hate rarely is, but, then, there you go, I suppose.

It's doubtful. It sounds horrible, but it seems some people are just like that though I do recommend watching Repo! the Genetic Opera again anyway because it's good.

Oh boy, I have a job and my money really accumulates. It's a bit disturbing if you ask me, you'd think being an adult is more expensive. Nope. I get to spend money on hobbies and save up for a house. Simple. I suppose I'm not an adult in a complicated situation.

Hey, I have two spare cards which cost $25 each. I have a playset of cards I'm using which are $16 each and a spare in my collection. If someone were to steal those seven cards and sell them at your average price that's over one hundred dollars! A budget standard deck can put you out $100 still, and a good Esper Control deck can cost $400-$600 and that's not including Legacy! Playing with solid commons with friends is probably a good idea, lest one goes weak at the knees staring down the price of playing.

I can really highly recommend to Mr Drexel draft with friends. If you can afford $15 (in the US, boosters are $5 each) you should look into it. It's a good way to get cards, and you can trade them into that $200 deck over time without hurting your wallet too much all at once. This also has the added benefit of giving you time to familiarise yourself with the game.

If you just want casual fun, Duels of the Planeswalkers on Steam should only be $20. I haven't checked recently.

An uncomfortably large number of my games against newer players are won by bluff, but I guess that comes from playing a lot of poker. Learning tells like mana being left open, obscure attacks, etc. can help a lot. You can also get away with sneaking through some damage with a vanilla 2/2 under certain circumstances depending on board state without bluffing. It'll all come to you with experience but bluffing is one of the parts of the game I find fun.

I don't understand how you people do it!

Which is to say, I want to participate in these kinds of threads, but I cannot. The subject matter is often personal and conversation can continue throughout multiple v posts; try as I might I still feel as though I am interrupting or not adding meaningful output to the discussions at hand. It's... moderately frustrating.

That's how I used to feel. I didn't have anything to say about the subjects being discussed and didn't feel comfortable starting my own. After all, I had never even contributed to the thread who was I to say where it should go. Eventually though, I started to comment on things I had some interest in, them I started to add little snippets of my own at the end of these posts. Now I don't mind coming in and starting topics at will

Your post implies you're over 20. That sort of statement doesn't really apply anymore. :smallconfused:

I do believe that's her point.

Very little things called Twilight are good. I can think of two!

Twilight Sparkle (being the worst doesn't mean she's still not good)

Twilight Princess (Zelda game~)

I'm sure there are others. I've forgotten what they are, but on the other hand I can only think of one bad thing called Twilight, so it evens out.

Oh, and on the topic of ponies: You are all completely incorrect. There is no one best pony and there is no worst pony. We all have our own opinions, and it should be left at that.

I agree!
But Twilight Sparkle is best pony.

What else could it mean? She has a kajillion avatars with cats in them!
Either that, or it's short for Catherine.

It's very emphatically not that second one.

If you have nothing to say on the current subject(s), you can just talk about your own stuff. I mean, Curly has pretty much treated the RB thread as her own personal blog a fair few times. As have I on occasion. The only real way to get into RB is to dive straight in head first and go for it. Then, before you know it, you'll be a regular, and then after a while more, almost everyone you're used to talking to will have vanished and you'll gradually drift away.
Unless you're one of the ones who vanishes first. That could also be a thing, but I can't speak of it from personal experience.

Well, thanks everyone, for my one topic to actually get more than 3 people to look at it. It had a good run.
PS Drake- One usually links to the last RB twice, one directly, as you did, and the other at the bottom of the list of links in the spoiler. Saves the next guy some time.

And don't worry Gnomish, I felt the same way for a while. But it's really not a big deal at all: most of my posts here don't get responses, but it's not because people are judging what I say I think. And other times I create half-page discussions on proper hatwear for allosaurs (popular opinion was top hats).

-snip, that's more money than I have-

I can really highly recommend to Mr Drexel draft with friends. If you can afford $15 (in the US, boosters are $5 each) you should look into it. It's a good way to get cards, and you can trade them into that $200 deck over time without hurting your wallet too much all at once. This also has the added benefit of giving you time to familiarise yourself with the game.

If you just want casual fun, Duels of the Planeswalkers on Steam should only be $20. I haven't checked recently.

Yours an evil laugh, an evil laugh indeed? Perhaps such evil laughs have no effect on me anymore, alas how sad...

*nods* Good to know. I think I'll drop by the hobby shop and look into it, the next time I'm out that way.

Evil laughs have to be timed at the right moment, to have the right effect. :smalltongue:

In my own opinion, which I am aware is not the most popular one and which has no rational basis I can explain, the show is largely entertaining as long as you don't think about it too much. There are a lot of things I enjoy that I realise aren't actually good when you look at them, and there are even things which I enjoyed until someone pointed out the flaws, or I started to notice them myself. The Big Bang Theory counts among the things which I know aren't good, but can still enjoy if I'm in the mood for something that doesn't require thought.

I've been so terribly scatterbrained in the last week. My thoughts are all over the place, and I can't concentrate for more than a few minutes at a time. This is bad, because I need to study for an exam next week (or rather, two, but it's best to take them one at a time). Linear algebra isn't hard per se, since everything boils down to repeatedly applying the most basic algebraic operations to the problems until you get the answer, but there are so many theorems you're bound to forget which one to apply in which situation...

Well, I should do well enough if I just could beat myself into doing some honest repetition, but with my current focus, there's a fat chance I'll ever get to that point. I've spent several days trying to track down the definition of sign(q), which'd sound a lot more impressive if I didn't already from the beginning know which one of 2 or 3 of the lectures I should focus on, and already had full access to his notes. I just can't go through more than one page at a time before my brain just goes into complete lockdown and almost subconsciously switches over to something else.

Also, I can lose track of absurd amounts of time if I'm not careful. Earlier today, I spent almost an hour adding comments to a piece of intentionally bugged code. At first, this code was just frustratingly bugged, until I managed to root out the bug, still not knowing how it appeared. I spoke with my lecturer about how I percieved the bug, and he became intrigued, asking me to send him a copy. Cue me reintroducing the same pieces of code that caused the bug to appear again (done in ten minutes), whereafter I finally managed to figure out how the bug worked. When I explained this to my lecturer, he asked me to add comments to it and send it to him so he could use it as an example, or perhaps add something similar to a lab sometime in the future to make life more interesting.

I think I may have gotten a cold (again), or even worse, the flu (but either it's terribly lame for a flu, takes a long time to break out, or I my immune defense is a lot more resistent to it than I'd expected), because I've been terribly tired even when I get a decent amount of sleep, and yesterday, I had another crash, this time despite not even having been hyped on adrenalin...

Unless you have some serious heat, I wouldn't be so sure. 6 inches of somewhat compact snow isn't a small amount, and it can take a lot of time for it to melt away. Especially if your nights are cold, since even when the snow melts, there aren't many places for the water to go, so it just stays in the snow and freezes when the temperature drops below zero.

Then again, you may not have the same frost in the ground as we do, which can block any water from being drained away from below and cools it from beneath.

True, although I woke up this morning to above-zero temperatures, and (I'm assuming) it'll get warmer later on.

The ground here, I'm pretty sure anyway, isn't perpetually cold... I'd imagine a fair amount of the water can drain away without any trouble.

On the topic of Twilight: I see it bashed a lot online, and honestly, those movies were not the worst thing I have ever seen in my life, like the internet would have me believe. They're certainly not the best thing ever either... They're just, average, really. I don't see the problem with there being average movies that are popular. Just look at Adam Sandler... He's somehow popular despite the majority of his work being absolutely terrible.

Really, it seems that some things are bashed online just because it's popular to bash them.

-----

On the topic of Cupcakes: I saw it posted on another site once... Might've been it's first posting, as it was on a site it belonged on & not being used to troll. People who might've genuinely enjoyed it go there. I saw the tags & didn't bother reading it because I skip over all the fanfics that wind up there, reading the more original stuff. (This is mostly because fanfics tend to assume too much familiarity with things I'm unfamiliar with.) Also, cupcakes seem to be an odd thing to make out of meat... (Granted, that's an assumption made from the title & tags.)

Really, I don't watch ANY television shows. I even canceled cable because I was just not using it.

-----

On the topic of the gas leak: I'm glad you got that taken care of. Poor squirrels though... But on some level, now you gotta wonder if burying a nut is responsible for the leak. That really does suck for them though.

-----

On the topic of sleeping through alarms: I've been doing much better, only sleeping through the first 2-4 alarms, rather than, like, all of them.

Well, my main problem with Sheldon is two fold.

1: Why are they still his friends? He treats them like less then dirt, and the FEW times he actually seems genuinely nice, he's either doing it for the wrong reasons or getting something out of it. Yes, he's saved their life. Once. Their comes a point where "I saved you from death" runs thin.

2: The fact that people see him as a good role model for autistic characters. This makes me want to vomit.

The show, in my opinion atleast, was always pretty poor in quality, but yes, the quality HAS been dropping as the seasons go (which tends to be the case, of course).

I bought Little Sister a volume of Cicero's speeches for Christmas. Why? Because she's currently studying Cicero in college (Classical Civ) and every time she has that lesson she comes home raving about how awesome Cicero was.
And yet that book has been untouched since it was shelved.

Why are you letting her? :smallconfused:

Well, let's just say that things happened that lead to me moving in with others. Primarily, my actual friend has been posted away (been talking way to much with the military), but due to his housing contract he still has to pay, so when he found out about my . . . problem . . . he let me move into his spot. I pay him two-thirds of what he actually pays for rent, and everyone's happy.
Connie is one of two other people in the house, and I've been here for less than half a week. I'd like to wait a week before I openly rock the boat.

If it'd be that devastating to her psyche, I vote do it. Who knows, you may even change her life for the not-horrible.

This I may do however. And doesn't it say something about myself that the first things I take with me are my laptop, DVDs, and a few books before cramming the rest of the suitcase with clothes and whatnots?

It's the only ad on here that caught my eye, but that was just because it seems very out of place on this website. I get the gist of what it's advertising and I don't think it's supposed to be there but I'm not sure.

I think that's why everyone noticed it. When I did I went to report it and saw some half a dozen post had been made about that advert within a space of two minutes, shortly followed by Roland St. Jude asking people not to post any more reports about it.

All comics are awesome in my book, though I got called a nerd for having to explain a computer virus related XCKD venn diagram after finding it vaguely funny.

It's a side-effect of being awesome enough to like what you like regardless of people's opinions. Or something. Everyone's a nerd about something, I consider it an acknowledgement of likemindedness.

Your post implies you're over 20. That sort of statement doesn't really apply anymore. :smallconfused:

Anyway... News from my life... On Tuesday, we find a four or five foot long snakeskin in the eaves at the bottom of the back stairs. Apparently, we have a carpet snake slithering around somewhere. Which is good, as it will keep down the vermin.
It also solves another mystery; one of our cats was terrified of going out the back door, so she must have smelled it hanging around.

. . . It's a snake. Snakes in the house? Bad thing. Really bad thing!

Is that what the Kit in CKG's name means? I've been wondering about that for years. Right then, it is CirrataCattulaPuella.

I've explained it three or four times though. Mostly when you were away though.

What else could it mean? She has a kajillion avatars with cats in them!
Either that, or it's short for Catherine.

I have a maternal aunt called Katherine, a paternal aunt called Kathleen, a maternal cousin called Katie (officially a diminutive of Catherine) and a Catherine married one of my maternal uncles.
Also one of my male friends growing up was called Kit.
The Kit in my name is mostly definitely not short for C/Katherine.
Kinda. >.>

I don't know. It's just that it's the same word as "cat" but with one vowel switched. It doesn't seem like much of a diminutive to me. The question is, where is Cirrata, and when can she answer this myster for us?

Your timestamp for that post was quarter to seven in the morning GMT. I was in bed. Asleep. Listening to Old Spanish songs.
That said, it is about that time that I have to explain my user name again.

It's simple. It's a shortening of a diminutive.
For example: Cat - kitten - kitty cat - kitty - kit.

. . .

And all the people who've made it to a UK meetup are laughing - or at least smirking.

Actually I despise people using 'kitty' or 'kitty cat' when talking about cats.

Everyone feels the same way. Just jump straight into it, people will (hopefully) respond to your posts and then a conversation starts. Or a tangential conversation.

I think you should find out, and let us know the results.

I'm certainly intrigued I have to admit.

It's very emphatically not that second one.

Indeed.
Welp. I've teased people enough.
The Origins of CurlyKitGirl

I was sixteen, and hadn't ever done anything like this before, so my reasoning was very simple.
Curly - my hair is rather prone to curliness.
Girl - I am a girl.
CurlyGirl not feeling right I needed a middle name.
Kit - reference to my real name (and I do like cats, and at the time I was doting on several not-mine kittens.
CurlyKitGirl.
And very quickly it was CKG, Curly, and all the other nicknames.
And my real name? Kitty. Very technically a diminutive of C/Katherine, but Kitty is on my birth certificate so it's not a diminutive.

Fool!
RB is my personal blog. You should feel grateful that I permit peons such as yourself to post here! :smalltongue:
But yeah, I do tend towards treating RB as a personal blog at times because I fail at actually keeping blogs, and sometimes I just need to rant/talk, and other times I get into really long discussions (DP, we're all looking at you) that lead to me treating RB as a personal blog.

And it's so very disheartening to stop, look around and realise just how many of your friends no longer post in RB/the Playground any more.
I try not to think about it too much because it leads to Great Old Ones being summoned. And sadness.

I don't get how you don't like Sheldon. He's my favorite character. I have been described as 'a female Sheldon Cooper with a tiny bit of Leonard mixed in* before Ms. Amy Farrah Fowler showed up, and then afterward once Ms. 'all-of-a-sudden-sexual' Amy Farrah Fowler appeared!

I may also be an incorrigible twit in real life, but that is totally debatable.

He doesn't seem like a functioning person... He does incredibly idiotic stuff, for someone that's supposed to be intelligent; things that nearly everyone in the show thinks is stupid. I can write a lot of that off to it being a sitcom (expecting stellar realism from a silly tv show is... petty), but most of the things I've seen him do make me want to smack him, not laugh. It'd be better if he was supposed to be a complete idiot, but that's not the impression I got.

I know one person that's even remotely like Sheldon in that regard, and he's annoying as hell.

Aren't we all? :smalltongue: :smallamused:

I suppose it's what you determine as 'low-quality'. I thought it was quite good quality, with enough nerd humor for actual nerds to pick up and then a good amount of 'nerd-expo' humor to let the general populace into some of the higher thinking jokes that they wouldn't otherwise get. Of course, I haven't seen like the last two seasons, since before Howard got married, so maybe it degenerated? Beforehand it's been quite a fine show.

And I might have been a little bit harsh. I haven't really seen enough of it to get an opinion of the show itself... I might watch some stuff from the earlier seasons, if I can get my hands on them. (I'll have to ask my old chemistry instructor; I know she has them)

Really, it seems that some things are bashed online just because it's popular to bash them.

On the topic of sleeping through alarms: I've been doing much better, only sleeping through the first 2-4 alarms, rather than, like, all of them.

*nods* Sounds about right.

I remember you having a problem with that a while ago... Glad you got that sorted out.

Oh, the wonderful feeling of having a D&D group, and no time with which to actually play the game. *hiss* :smallmad:

I presume she's been blessed to have only read Cicero in English. His Latin...it's nightmarish. Every time my professor assigns us some Cicero for translation I weep on the inside. The word order...it's just so maddening. Latin has no proper word order, just common ways of arranging sentences (usually subject-object-verb). Cicero proceeds to completely disregard all of this so that he can make his Latin all fancy and pretty. It's horrifying to read. The man successfully made a sentence that lasts OVER A PAGE, and because of the way he structures it you can't begin translating until you have read the very last word, because it's the verb that explains it all. Only then can you go back and begin translating. It's madness I tell you.

Also, kudos to your sister for becoming a classicist. It's the best way to go. :smallamused:

As an aside, did you know that Cicero wanted an epic poem written about his life? No poet wanted to do it though, so Cicero wrote one himself, which was a bad move since he was a master of prose, not of poetry. It was apparently so bad that we only have fragments of it. All the medieval monks saw that crap and though "Nope, not worth copying."

Speaking of medieval monks copying things, here's a manuscript that a medieval cat ran over (http://wdtprs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/13_03_07_cats_prints1.jpg). Adorable, no?

I'm so sorry. Canon law can be dreadful. There's a good reason why most seminarians look heavenward for protection from the dreaded assignment of diocesan canon lawyer. It is a fate worse than death. *shudders*

Though I suppose if you do it for only one semester it's not so bad. My question is, which code are you studying? The 1917 code or the 1983? Or are your perhaps studying the older canons that were promulgated by various councils and synods, but never put into one comprehensive Church-wide code? The actual Code of Canon Law seems to be too recent to be part of your area of expertise.

Also...wait...you're studying again? Last we discussed such things you told me you had finished Oxford. What's happening now? Clearly I missed some news at some point. :smallconfused:

I will admit, the man does have style. His little bit on why he didn't dislike being old was quite nice. However, his Cataline orations will forever be hated by me, since they were my first experience with him. According to my system, "..." should never be used in the middle of a paragraph unless absolutely neccessary for the delivery. In fact, I think, a vast majority of the time, I only use it in the second sense...

Secondly, holy crap that's fancy. I take it the Roman's didn't go for the practicality of a design, then?

Alloyed gold, which far more people have beheld, is a little more humble in its appearance: even your 18k gold is dull and diluted in comparison. I pray you reconsider your despite.

I'd like to point out the the Holy Roman Empire was neither "Holy", "Roman", or really an "Empire." The Prussians (and other assorted Germanic states) did have some fancy stuff, though.

Was unaware of all of that! Nifty.

According to my system, "..." should never be used in the middle of a paragraph unless absolutely neccessary for the delivery. It can, however, be freely used to end one off in order to denote an open end and that there is more which can be said on the topic, or that there's a pause for silent reflection before I move on to the next paragraph. In fact, I think, a vast majority of the time, I only use it in the second sense...

I tend to use it in the middle of paragraphs, when the sentence would trail off. (as if I was speaking). Or when (again, as if I was speaking), there would be a confused jumble of words before something coherent was produced. I use it, I suppose, in both senses, then.

Now I just need to decide other ways to indicate pausing while I type... All of these commas are making my sentences a horrible mess of punctuation and grammar mistakes.

Silvery metals are much more aesthetically pleasing to me, although, should I ever come across pure, unalloyed gold, I'd be glad to reconsider.

Plus, gold doesn't go nearly as well with Alexandrite.

I think you mean "aww" or "d'awww". Like so.

Nope. "Aww" sounds abrupt and stupid (and also like you've hurt yourself), and "D'aww" earns double stupid points by containing an apostrophe. I have always used and will always use "Naww", whether it is to put sound on adore or disappointment, and you'll always be able to tell the difference from the "" I'll suffix it with in the first case.

Well you don't have to use an apostrophe. And what's wrong with em anyway?

And ok, though I think "Dawww" sounds better. Nawww, even with the emphasis, sorta sounds like either a solemn disagreement, or "I'mma slowly nibble on you" like saying "nom nom nom".

However, it's still quite interesting and a cool little insight, and I can definitly see where you are coming from with it, and the addition of  helps.

Well, since it's my system, I wouldn't expect your system to fit into it all too well. Everyone uses it in their own way. After all, I've seen cases with people who finish off every sentence with "..." (I think it was the Let's Play with the original Urist, but I'm not sure).

My girl found a rabbi who'll do interfaith marriages (I'm Apathetic Agnostic, she's Jewish). We're going to get legally married on March 22nd 2013 (& haven't told our families). We're going to have another ceremony that we invite family & friends to in 2014, in a huge tree that's been hollowed out by fire (naturally, not by humans) but is still growing. As far as they know, that will be the legal marriage as well, even though it won't be.

I will also be having surgery on April 5th 2013 & will never have to worry about having kids, which is pretty awesome for us.

Oh good Lord, now I'm going to sit lusting after that crown for the next few hours. Thanks a lot, Dracoprimus.

You're welcome. :smalltongue:

First of all, you could totally do that without using gold. It'd be better without gold since then it wouldn't be soft and easy to destroy, thus serving as a symbol.

Ah, but I think gold is actually a very fitting symbol. It is beautiful and splendorous, as was the Holy Roman Empire in spite of its many many many flaws, but as you pointed out, it's soft and easily damaged. It speaks to the fragility of authority and power. Gold works quite well for that symbolism I think. I have no idea if the Holy Roman Emperor had that in mind when he commissioned it, but it's a nice way that gold could be used.

DP or Curly probably could tell you more about it; history is only a passing interest for me, and I only remember the little bits of trivia my brain clings onto. :smallamused:

I can do a little. The Holy Roman Empire technically was formed under the reign of the Frankish king Charlemagne when Pope Leo III crowned him Emperor of the Romans. Technically this was not inaccurate, since Charlemagne had conquered Rome, and was an emperor of sorts. The Carolingian Empire eventually split into two halves, much like the original Roman Empire. The western half was in modern day France, and the eastern in modern day Germany. One of the rulers of the eastern Franks, Otto I, was crowned Emperor by the Pope, and thus the Holy Roman Empire was formed. Otto I is the one responsible for that incredibly pimp crown.

Also, Charlemagne spawned an ancestral line that would one day give birth to Christopher Lee, which is perhaps his greatest contribution to human history.

They imply that you eat away the portion of the word that makes it pronouncable, so instead, you get a hard, sort of explosive pronounciation which definitely doesn't fit for an onomatopoeia for adore. Also, apostrophes are overused in the most stupid circumstances. They're sort of like the Comic Sans of spelling...

And ok, though I think "Dawww" sounds better. Nawww, even with the emphasis, sorta sounds like either a solemn disagreement, or "I'mma slowly nibble on you" like saying "nom nom nom".

'D' is a hard consonand, sort of like the strike of a drum, and it fits too badly in context. 'N', on the other hand, is soft, and gives the whole word a very soft, rounded opening, a perfect sense of care.

Calcium is a metal?

First of all, you could totally do that without using gold. It'd be better without gold since then it wouldn't be soft and easy to destroy, thus serving as a symbol.

Ah, but pure gold, though soft, never tarnishes or “rusts.” It stays shiny and pure forever without polishing. This is also part of its appeal.

Calcium is a metal, but only technically speaking. I was being cheeky. :smalltongue:

Trigger warning: anti-children
My girl & I agree that children are annoying loud sacks of poop & snot that break things and cost a lot of money & time that we'd much rather use elsewhere.

Sure, I COULD do a great job raising a child... My mom is actually a somewhat influential figure in the childcare industry and I have learned much from her while living in the house that had the daycare she ran. Also, psychology is an interest of mine & I've learned a lot about developmental psych. I just REALLY don't want to. I'll apply some of this knowledge to my relationship instead.

Besides, her bipolar meds would deform any potential fetus's limbs. It would be cruel to knowingly do that to a potential someone.

...And there are other reasons I won't even get into, but all the above on it's own is enough to be absolutely irrevocably certain.

So then, today I almost set a child on fire. *sigh* Sometimes I wish things could actually get boring at my school...

Here's the story: I tend to volunteer a lot to get hours so I can go back to my school, which is a school of choice. Today there was some kind of sports convention, don't know or really care what it was about, so I decided to do the only non-sports related job, face painting.

Despite being only ten or twenty degrees above freezing, the sun was blazing today, super bright. I had this big, powerful silver mirror, the kind attached to walls in hotel bathrooms. However I wasn't using it, except to show the kids the final result. After a few hours, the mirror somehow got in the perfect angle to direct sunlight at one kid's jacket... Long story short, I smelled smoke, looked around crazily, and saw smoke coming from the child's jacket. Thankfully it didn't catch on fire, the worst that happened was a small brown spot and a smell.

The moral of the story, don't trust me with mirrors. But I have to say, look out Archimedes!

At least you only ALMOST set them on fire...

When I was younger, a friend of mine & I decided to burn leaves. He was going to make a fireplace out of wood. I found a metal tub in the woods to use instead. It was shaped like a sink with no hole in the bottom. No rusting. Black with white speckles.

We used this many times for a while to burn leaves.

So, a friend of his comes over one time. Very loose jacket. He manages to get it caught on fire from the fire we made.

He freezes up, so I tell him to take it off. My friend goes inside to get water. Meanwhile I kick sand on the jacket until it's out. After a while, my friend comes back with a glass of water.

My friend's friend, who said he didn't like that jacket anyway; it was just a gift from his aunt; was no longer allowed to visit my friend. This was also the last time we burned anything.

Cool, I like hearing about the meaning of words in foreign languages.

Yay! Why do you need to find such a rare thing to initiat a legal contract? Why is religion even involved in marriage when it is, again, a legal contract?

Just curious. That sounds like a cool place to get married by the way. And good choice of birth control, I approve.

See, I even managed to get ninja'd with a post establishing that I didn't ninja you. :smallamused:

They imply that you eat away the portion of the word that makes it pronouncable, so instead, you get a hard, sort of explosive pronounciation which definitely doesn't fit for an onomatopoeia for adore. Also, apostrophes are overused in the most stupid circumstances. They're sort of like the Comic Sans of spelling...

'D' is a hard consonand, sort of like the strike of a drum, and it fits too badly in context. 'N', on the other hand, is soft, and gives the whole word a very soft, rounded opening, a perfect sense of care.

Even in Sick Zodi mode, I'm the greatest ninja.

Oooh, interesting. I never put that much thought into it.

Yay! Thanks. This was just a quick doodle. The one I wanted to do then would be a little more elaborate, with coloured Sharpies probably, although probably just as silly.

I rather like this kind of sound.

Ah, but pure gold, though soft, never tarnishes or “rusts.” It stays shiny and pure forever without polishing. This is also part of its appeal.

You're a pretty sweet artist Knee. If I didn't already have Teddy doing my comic, I'd entertain the thought of asking you too do it. I always feel kinda bad saying this, but it's meant to be a compliment to both parties.

Aaah. But I thought birds didn't have cheeks?

I have always been a little aloof around jewelry and other shinies. My mother was allergic to gold and disliked silver, so seldom wore jewelry and kept less in the house, and somehow I never managed to catch an interest outwardly. I prefer my jewelry to be unobtrusive, almost unnoticeable. I do have a fondness for cloth/thread bracelets and anklets.

I'm not competing for which is more painful, but I did rearrange the shelves because stubborn customers will try to get their own books down. If all those hardcover tradesized fantasy fell on someone's head and they didn't manage to put their hands in the way there is a high risk of concussion going on.

But at the same time, getting punched in the jaw by a lamp sounds both painful and disney-esque. I don't know why, but animated inanimate objects remind me of the disney movies my sister used to (and still does) love and adore as a child.

Though the idea of leeches inside the throat is perhaps a medical breakthrough not seen since exanguination. I believe it would work; add a pint of homoeopathic solution to the leech so that the throat can remember through the leech the original properties dissolved in water.

Not actual medical advice even if that'd be the same as eating leeches which isn't directly lethal if slightly dangerous due to them being raw and not dead.

Indeed, but lets go deeper into Aristotelian causes. I met my girl July 2nd 2011.

I now have a permanent union with my girl.

Nov 22nd 2011 - I collared her (with a small ceremony & speech*), which tells the kink community (people into bdsm), that we have a permanent union.

March 22nd 2013 - I'm legally marrying her, which tells the government that we have a permanent union.

Summer 2014 - I'm having a ceremony involving family & friends, which tells everyone else that we have a permanent union. (Vanilla means not kinky; therefore everyone else.)

Does that help?

A non-pizza toppings first to heighten the sensation and then a negation of the negation of the pizza implying a dialectic improvement of the original pizza.

Or maybe Plato is right and this pizza happens to partake in the existence of an immaterial metaphysically perfect pizza.Heidegger would agree that the object we call pizza is indeed immaterial, perfect and metaphysical and that all manifestations of pizza to us are merely perfect and delicious.

Ah, okay. That's much better, then, than what it is here. (well, at least the pizza huts that I've been to; I can't account for all of the US). I prefer the local, non-franchised Italian restaurants, or, when I can't get that, Dominoes. (not that Dominoes is a lot better than Pizza Hut).

That depends on how it's kept, but no, not a year-old pizza. Week-old? Maybe, although I don't normally let pizzas last that long. :smallamused:

Indeed, but lets go deeper into Aristotelian causes. It's formal cause, the definition of pizza; the material cause, the parts constituting it as a pizza; the efficient cause, though I don't quite know what the efficient cause of a pizza is (hunger?); and the final cause, which is the satisfaction of hunger.

Or maybe Plato is right and this pizza happens to partake in the existence of an immaterial metaphysically perfect pizza.

You like lampreys? You are sick woman. :smalltongue:

I met my girl July 2nd 2011.

I now have a permanent union with my girl.

Nov 22nd 2011 - I collared her (with a small ceremony & speech*), which tells the kink community (people into bdsm), that we have a permanent union.

March 22nd 2013 - I'm legally marrying her, which tells the government that we have a permanent union.

Summer 2014 - I'm having a ceremony involving family & friends, which tells everyone else that we have a permanent union. (Vanilla means not kinky; therefore everyone else.)

Does that help?

*Not sure that I should post the speech here... Technically nothing against the rules, but some people seem to squick at some of the purely roleplay only implications.

It does indeed! I must of missed/missread some of the original post.

I counter-propose a Hegelian approach to the pizza; the need for it to be negated to become a better pizza in the process of negating itself.

A non-pizza toppings first to heighten the sensation and then a negation of the negation of the pizza implying a dialectic improvement of the original pizza.

Errrr....ummm...Hegel has always baffled me. I'm assuming this has something to do with Hegel's belief that everything is perpetually improving.

Heidegger would agree that the object we call pizza is indeed immaterial, perfect and metaphysical and that all manifestations of pizza to us are merely perfect and delicious.

Grrrr, I have not studied Heidegger yet. Call me in a month, I'll have done it by then. I have however studied Wittgenstein, so I will say that you are saying nothing at all, and so we must pass over Hegelian and Heideggerian pizza in silence.

We don't have any decent pizza places near us...

I used to live in New York. Since I am now in California, there are no good pizza places anywhere nearby. The nearest good one is in New York. The chains have okay pizza that's good enough for not being in New York.

Where I live there is also a surplus of those; starting with the fact that my house is very near qualifying for one considering one orders food; there is always available pasta and garlic bread and the kitchen is open 24/7.

Errrr....ummm...Hegel has always baffled me. I'm assuming this has something to do with Hegel's belief that everything is perpetually improving. His belief that an object most go through a tortuous process on which it negates it's very essence to then come upon a new state of stability improved.

He doesn't advocate perpetual improvement so much as how improvement comes through a process of denial of the self and reaching a higher state.

To go off topic (as usual), I feel bad about not updating my little dwarf game I started in the Silly Message Game Board, and I feel as though I have to do something about that.

I'm considering.........

-Starting a new Mountain of Dwarfs game (kind of an updated version. I felt as though I made the levels too big, so I had only 3 levels planned.)

So in this version, all the dwarfs will start at level 3, equipped with rations, a pickaxe, and a dagger. Smaller, but more levels to explore. And I'll even add a shop and a bar where the players can buy drinks that can give them temporary boosts and extra experience points. And even more monsters, and new rocks to mine (mineral and gold deposits).

-A quick, experimental game , (a dungeon developing/war game) that I can update quickly.

What do you guys think?
