(welcome to the Dark Sun: 3.5 Gladiator Game in character thread)

gameplay begins in the dungeons of the arena, house Stell quarter.
each gladiator has their own cubby, which contains a desk(containing writing stylus 50 sheets of parchment, a bed, 10 armor racks, 10 weapon racks, wicker furniture. a small cooking pit, a large barrel (250 gallons(full of water) a cage with 3 messenger pigeons, various cooking implements. you share your cell with a chicken (another one appears the next day when eaten), a bedmate who answers to "Jeeves" (also regardless of gender/race)) this bedmate is responsible for keeping you washed, fed, "happy" and your wounds tended to. you are responsible for keeping this person alive in the arena, you only know that they are a water cleric, a slave, a healer and appearently very important that they survive long enough to learn "create food and water"(a 3rd level water cleric spell). your last companion upon reaching 5th level was removed from your cell, granted their "freedom" and conscripted into crafting "something" for Hamanu. it has become widely known that wooden boxes of exceptional quality (masterwork/mastercrafted) are being sought out in massive numbers, the value of a quality woodworker is currently very high.

You know that your master is an urban druid. he is very stern but not cruel. (Race: Varies Alignment LN his features never quite seem to be the same) He is to be addressed as Master Stell in public, in private he allows you to call him William. Occasionally he is known to take gladiators who can behave themselves with him on caravan drives. He treats most of his slaves almost like freemen as long as they keep protecting and leveling the water clerics.

there are 2 Templars within earshot, one of which is the arena master(head guard of this location) For a CP (and a successful gather information check DC 5) you can find out more about your next upcoming matches.

One of the Templars, Aiur(LE Male Dwarf Templar/Assassin) is willing to gamble on your behalf in exchange for 10% of the bet up front, and 10% of the winnings. Aiur is known to be fair and stand up for his clients as long as they pay his cut. he is also known to do errands and favors for money, plus his famous 10%.

The other Templar is new, you do not recognize them. he was sent to replace the last one who vanished mysteriously after he asked too many questions regarding certain matches being fixed. (You were a witness to this murder and know that he was killed by Aiur)

(Your first post should be your finished character sheet)

(I have decided I am going to use the alternate experience system in unearthed arcana)

almost all of the items are made of wood, mostly bamboo. the pigeons are not intended as food. despite your 4 int you are not illiterate, although you only speak/read/write common.

Aiur peeks at you occasionally, seemingly more concerned with the cleric in your cage then you.

Matias

*Sitting at the small desk, his elbows propped on the surface, hands clasped as he stares at the stone wall, his breathing slow and regular. It helped, not having to look at the bars. They weren't enough to keep him here, if he decided otherwise, but it was better than the wilds, and the cage had some familiarity. It had been home so long ago.*

*With a heavy sigh, he pushes himself back from the desk and starts pacing back and forth, his thoughts wandering far - to the rolling dunes and harsh scrublands of the wild, the cold night air creeping slowly down from the sky, the clean, dry air. There was less smell... less stink.*

*With a look over to "Jeeves", he stares at her a moment, not intending to scare her, but his face is a slight scowl naturally, his voice quiet and rumbling.*
"I've never been fond of how they swap out our charges like this, you know. Just when our partners start to learn how to stay alive, they're moved, and new blood comes in. New blood is dangerous. Untested. Untried. Tell me. Have you fought in the arena before?"

you don't quite puzzle out what's wrong with her, but clearly she is still wet and shivering in the heat.

you estimate her age to be about 12. clearly too young to adventure but just old enough to begin to learn a profession/class and definitely too young to already be a cleric.

Render is a large (7' tall, 250 lbs) and muscular mul with copper skin and no hair.

Though his tattoos mark him as a gladiator slave, the only life he's ever known, Render believes that he has a greater destiny to someday fulfill. That thought is what keeps him going in the arena. He has gained a reputation as a very tough fighter, a good one to bet on, but is not always a crowd favorite. In personal interactions he tends to come across as gruff or mean, but those who know him best know he can be loyal and generous.

Today, Render forces himself to be patient once more. His options are limited, as is true of most slaves, but someday that would change.

"Jeeves, I'm Render. I don't typically bite. Where are you from?"

insignia spells from races of destiny
INSIGNIA OF ALARM
Abjuration
Level: Bard 2, cleric 2, paladin 2
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Area: 400 ft. + 40 ft./level spread,
centered on you
Target: All wearers of special insignia
within range
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)
This spell alerts all wearers of a
specific insignia (see below) within
range. Such creatures hear a single
mental “ping” (as the alarm spell, page
197 of the Player’s Handbook) when this
spell is cast.
This spell requires significant preparation.
Before using this spell you
must forge specially crafted insignias.
These can be crafted in the form of
amulets, badges, rings, or any similar
object, but each one must bear the
same logo, crest, or symbol. Each
insignia costs 10 gp. Militias, guilds,
or churches within a city use this spell
to call all its members together.
Focus: A specially prepared insignia
(see above).

INSIGNIA OF BLESSING
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-
Affecting]
Level: Cleric 3, paladin 3
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Duration: 1 min./level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)
This spell functions just like insignia
of alarm except that the insignia wearers
are also filled with courage. Each
insignia wearer gains a +1 morale
bonus on attack rolls and on saving
throws against fear effects.

INSIGNIA OF HEALING
Conjuration (Healing)
Level: Bard 3, cleric 3
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will half (harmless);
see text
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless);
see text
This spell works just like insignia of
alarm except the insignia wearers are
instead healed by positive energy. The
spell cures 1d8 points of damage +1
point per caster level (maximum +10)
to all wearers of the insignia.
Since undead are powered by negative
energy, this spell deals damage to
them instead of curing their wounds.
Any undead creature can apply spell
resistance and attempt a Will save to
take half damage.

INSIGNIA OF WARDING
Abjuration
Level: Cleric 3, paladin 3
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Duration: 1 min./level
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)
This spell works just like insignia of
alarm except the insignia wearers also
gain a +1 divine bonus to AC and on
Fortitude saves.

(Will render be joining these 2 I assumed yes but asking to be sure)

"Great. Well Krah, none of us asked to be here. There are worse places though.

A prize to win? I'm in."

Render takes a moment to raise his psychic force armor, grabs his club, and heads out.

in the waiting area, stands 2 flags, one of Urik the lion Hamanu, another to house Stel. the various sigils to the elements and para-elements are also visible on the wall.

various prayer and well-wishes are said.

swatting away the weapons favoring his natural ones he allows the oil to be rubbed onto his body he takes a moment to fix the image of his new battle mate's and in broken common "you hit i kill you hit mate i kill and take you mate" with those few words knuckle walks into the arena savoring the warmth of the sun

okay a bit about the arena.
arena is 140 x 300. your house's gate is on the side, and the enemies gate is on the other side (short side to short side)
the 2 sides start out 110' apart (140' gate to gate, but 15' on each side for setting up (4 rows(20') by 3 deep(15')

encounter is as follows
your team: 3 PCs + 3 npc cleric1 +6 human warrior-slaves (no vitality just 15 wounds, 12 ac, 14 strength, 10 dex 15 con 10 int 10 wis 10 chr they are armed with stone spears +1 to hit(1d8 damage *double damage when ready vs charging characters feat: power attack)

Enemy Team: 1 Glortorus (Male Mul) 2 Human warrior-slaves(conscious) and 9 warrior-slaves(Unconscious)(bodies are piled near their door), in a baby-like harness a Halfling sits strapped to Glortorus's back.

(If you want more information, in the future you can bribe aiur (1CP) and make a gather information check. but you have no money, and aiur only works for money, although he does care about the health of his gladiators, greedy bastard that he is)

Glortorus still has Magic Weapon, and Offensive Prescience Active
glortorus uses Combat Stance Round 8 Preparation
Combat Stance: A gladiator with 3 or more ranks in Perform can assume a combat stance, showing off to spectators and displaying a warning to opponents. You receive a +2 competence bonus to AC against the first attack made against you within 5 rounds after assuming the stance. At 6th level combat stance can be assumed as a move action, and at 12th level as a swift action.

glortorus uses Martial Display Round 9 of Preparation

You receive a +2 competence bonus to the first attack roll you make within 5 rounds after ending the martial display. "Live or die - we're brothers today. Matias is my slave name, and will work for now."

A barbarian with this variant form of rage doesn’t gain the normal bonuses when he enters a rage. Instead, when a barbarian with whirling frenzy enters a rage, he temporarily gains a +4 bonus to Strength and a +2 dodge bonus to Armor Class and on Reflex saves. While in a whirling frenzy, the barbarian may make one extra attack in a round at his highest base attack bonus, but this attack takes a –2 penalty, as does each other attack made that round. This penalty applies for 1 round, so it also affects attacks of opportunity the barbarian might make before his next action. Whirling frenzy is otherwise identical to the standard barbarian rage in all other ways. At 11th level (when a standard barbarian gains greater rage), the Strength bonus increases to +6, and the dodge bonus to Armor Class and on Reflex saves increases to +3. At 20th level (when a standard barbarian gains mighty rage), the Strength bonus increases to +8, and the dodge bonus to Armor Class and on Reflex saves increases to +4. A barbarian using this variant doesn’t gain indomitable will at 14th level. Instead, he gains evasion, but only while in a whirling frenzy.

Abilities
RAGE VARIANT: WHIRLING FRENZY
A barbarian with this variant form of rage doesn’t gain the normal bonuses when he enters a rage. Instead, when a barbarian with
whirling frenzy enters a rage, he temporarily gains a +4 bonus to Strength and a +2 dodge bonus to Armor Class and on Reflex saves.
A character can’t use whirling frenzy at the same time that he uses any other form of rage (or similar ability).

Spotting the prize, Render runs to get it ... going after the bastard sword.

you move to, and pick up the bastard sword.

it is a masterwork bronze bastard sword (1d10 damage +0 to hit / -1 to damage) the hilt is inlaid with ivory and bears a strange 4 armed stone winged creature on it, with 2 tiny emeralds for eyes (10CP value each) this blade looks fine enough to even be enchanted although you are unsure if it actually is or not.

ooc question
Sharp Teeth [General]

For some reason, you have incredibly sharp teeth that can be used effectively in combat. You could have had strange genetics for your race, or you filed your teeth down to razor-sharp edges.*
Prerequisites: Must be a creature that does not have a bite attack.
Benefit: The character gains a Bite attack that deals 1d6+Strength Modifier (If medium).

Normal: When you bite people, you only piss them off.
would like to take that feat at 6th level and or the weak willed flaw

you could charge him but keep in mind he broke free of the grapple and has reach with his spiked chain, although you could charge to a space to have flanking. if you tumble up to him (tumble dc15) you will not get an Aoo.

I fixed the link. that feat is homebrew but there are a lot of ways to gain a bite attack, but using a feat to gain a bite attack for a secondary bite is reasonable which would be 1d6+ 1/2 strength when you full attack, or using it as a secondary natural attack with your claws

you can choose, I pointed out obvious shiny ones. if u want to spend a standard action on a spot check for something better, but then u could only move over to it, and pick it up next turn. or you can choose one of those types I listed, and be able to move to it, and pick it up this turn.

WILLING DEFORMITY [VILE]

WILLING DEFORMITY [VILE]
Through scarification, self-mutilation, and supplication to dark powers, the character intentionally mars her own body. Benefit: The character gains a +2 deformity bonus on Intimidate checks.

DEFORMITY (TEETH) [VILE]

DEFORMITY (TEETH) [VILE]
By filing your teeth to points and brutalizing your gums, you gain a hideous smile full of razor-sharp teeth that enable you to make a grisly bite attack.
Prerequisites: Evil alignment, Willing Deformity.
Benefit: You gain a bite attack that can be used as a natural weapon to deal damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier.
If you attack with other weapons, you can use your bite as a secondary attack (taking a –5 penalty on your attack roll) for 1d4 + half Strength modifier damage. In addition, you gain a +1 bonus on Intimidate checks.

so both feats give +3 to intimidate, and a natural primary bite attack 1d4 + str mod (full strength modifier)

SHOCK TROOPER [TACTICAL]
You are adept at breaking up formations of soldiers when you rush into battle.
Prerequisites: Improved Bull Rush, Power Attack, base
attack bonus +6.
Benefi t: The Shock Trooper feat enables the use of three tactical maneuvers.
Directed Bull Rush: To use this maneuver, you must make a successful bull rush attempt as part of a charge. For every square you push your foe back, you may also push that foe one square to the left or right.
Domino Rush: To use this maneuver, you must make a successful bull rush attempt that forces a foe into the same square as another foe. You may make a free trip attempt against both foes at the same time, and neither foe gets a chance to trip you if your attempt fails.
Heedless Charge: To use this maneuver, you must charge and make the attack at the end of the charge using your Power Attack feat. The penalty you take on your attack roll must be –5 or worse. In addition to normal charge modifi ers (which give you a –2 penalty to AC and a +2 bonus on the attack roll), you can assign any portion of the attack roll penalty from
Power Attack to your Armor Class instead, up to a maximum equal to your base attack bonus.
Special: A fighter may select Shock Trooper as one of his fighter bonus feats.

as much as I would love an ECL 5 character to qualify for this it is situation impossible

knockdown perhaps? from deities & demi-gods ?

Knock-Down [General]

Prerequisites:

Base attack bonus +2, Improved Trip, Str 15.

Benefit:

Whenever you deal 10 or more points of damage to your opponent in melee, you make a trip attack as a free action against the same target.

knockdown perhaps? from deities & demi-gods ?
Knockback
Knockback

( Races of Stone, p. 142)

[General]

By putting your bulk behind a blow, you can push your enemy backward.
Prerequisite
Improved Bull Rush (PH) , Power Attack (PH) , size Large or larger (goliaths qualify by virtue of their powerful build racial trait),
Benefit
If you score a hit while you are using the Power Attack feat, you can make a free bull rush attempt against the foe you hit, applying the number by which you reduced your attack roll as a bonus on the opposed Strength check (as well as on the damage you deal). If you hit with a twohanded weapon, you can apply double that number on the opposed Strength check. Unlike standard bull rush attempts, knockback attempts don't provoke attacks of opportunity, and you don't move with the enemy you knock backward. Bull rush rules can be found on page 154 of the Player's Handbook.
Special
A fi ghter may select Knockback as one of his fi ghter bonus feats (see page 38 of the Player's Handbook).

*As his weapon smacks soundly into his enemy, and Matias dashes across the battlefield, he reaches down to snatch up fallen weapons, trying to keep his attention on his enemies while he does so.*

OOC:

Alright, pretty simple - I'm going to try to scoop up a dagger or two, but more importantly, the shortspear. I figure trying to make an attack in the same turn would be near impossible, so I'll wait for that until next turn.

So, just a thought, since we're getting more and more people posting, maybe we should make and OOC thread for all that, and the IC stuff will stay more organized. Just a thought

even with the +10 gantz and matias you aren't sure if he is bluffing or seriously injured.

(ooc) check the first post in this thread, I decided to use a variant (to keep level progression from advancing too fast but still advancing to where I need it

anyone of with a level adjust of +1 and 3 non racial class levels can reduce their exp gain by 4,000 to reduce their level adjust by +1

anyone of 6 class levels(non racial) and +2 level adjust can reduce exp gain by 4,000 and also reduce their level adjust by 1

anyone with a +3 or higher level adjust can't yet buy off their level adjust as they need 9 class levels.

Experience is going to be handled slightly different in addition to the above changes.

players can "spend" experience points on their npcs after each fight. (if desired)

characters will earn rewards for every
(water domain)cleric they level to 5th level caster(with craft wonderous item feat)
druid that they level to 5th level
Any other class to 7th level (class levels not ECL)

sure you can name them whatever you like. since you are sitting it out, note the exp system for advancement, so you can level up

they will use healing at your asking or will heal you if you go unconscious.

*With a nod to the crowd, Matias raises his hand and paces forward, picking up a couple quivers and arrows before walking back to Biggs, Wedge and Gulah.*
"Alright - if we're going to do this, you two are going to be my support - you hang back with Gulah, and keep her safe. Gulah - if you see an opening, take the shot, but just keep these two on their feet. All of you, if someone goes down, you move to him and pick him up if you can. We're going to try to keep from losing people. Understood?"

*He nods and tests the balance of the bronze shortspear with a sigh before passing it to Gulah to hang onto.*
"Okay. We stay in - we give them hell."

*Moving over to the other Mul, he picks up a trident and net in his off hand.*
"Well done - if we work together, we can overcome, what do you say brothers?"

OOC:

I'm leveled up, so I'll stay in for the next fight, I'll have all three of my underlings hang on to their spears, but use the bows and arrows from the fallen warriors

I'll use a trident and net for the next round

Trident: This three-tined piercing weapon can be thrown just as a

Eh, jumping ship happens. The game might not be exactly what they thought it was going to be, that's all.

I already rolled attack and damage for my first round in my last IC post - I got 15 damage with a readied attack against the lion, so doubled is 30 - not enough to kill it in one blow, but I think that triggers massive damage, so a failed fort might kill it anyways.

I'll be honest, grappling is my weakpoint, but I'll roll a couple times and see how I do.

to those quitting, good luck. in ancient rome, gladiators before emperor titus had a near 90% survival rate, unless they were delivered internal wounds.

Athas(dark sun) is a very harsh world, where gladiator arena combat is the most popular form of entertainment. combat is a core part of a gladiator game.
As players we play to be challenged, to have fun and learn new things. Characters live, die, win and are defeated, in many games to lose is to die. it is hard enough to game through this medium where everything takes a long time to resolve, but it does require an active role, not a passive one.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a lion must hit with its
bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action
without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple
check, it establishes a hold and can rake.

oops, I thought it was claw..
guess no grapples my bad.

I was thinking of the generic entry for improve grab
Improved Grab (Ex): If a creature with this special attack hits
with a melee weapon (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal
damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking
an attack of opportunity (see Grapple, page 155 of the Player’s
Handbook). No initial touch attack is required.
Unless otherwise noted, improved grab works only against opponents
at least one size category smaller than the creature. The
creature has the option to conduct the grapple normally, or simply
use the part of its body it used in the improved grab to hold the
opponent. If it chooses to do the latter, it takes a –20 penalty on
grapple checks, but is not considered grappled itself; the creature
does not lose its Dexterity bonus to AC, still threatens an area, and
can use its remaining attacks against other opponents.
A successful hold does not deal any extra damage unless the creature
also has the constrict special attack. If the creature does not
constrict, each successful grapple check it makes during successive
rounds automatically deals the damage indicated for the attack that
established the hold. Otherwise, it deals constriction damage as
well (the amount is given in the creature’s descriptive text).
When a creature gets a hold after an improved grab attack, it
pulls the opponent into its space. This act does not provoke attacks
of opportunity. It can even move (possibly carrying away the
opponent), provided it can drag the opponent’s weight.

Alright, I'm assuming I'm up, so I'll roll for stats for Biggs / Wedge / Gulah, just so I know what I'm working with.

Which lions are left? the one I took my attack against is dead, I assume

Also, I had completely missed a couple of skill points and that I'd already taken collector of stories, so my Knowledge - nature skill check earlier was a 31.

the "noobs" all use the stats in the recruiting post, although there is a tiny bit of customization available

well if i am right i killed one at the start of combat, and killed 2 more and finished off a 4th if it was in range so of the 8 that charged 4 are left - the one you downed that leaves 3 + the 4 moving in more slowly

reposting here for quickness

sure for the npc warriors
they do not get the elite array as they are non important npcs (still though they can make a difference with luck or become stronger with experience) this is simply their start in life

s 11 +2
d 10
c 11 +2
I 10
w 11
chr 10

modified by race (human) leaves them with 13 str 10 dex 13 con 10 int 11 wis 10 chr
their starting feat is power attack. their skills are +4 profession(any) 1 rank knowledge(Local)(Urik), 1 rank Survival

noobs can be customized by giving them flaws/traits, but they are just a standard "throw away" troop in the arena, many were either slaves or others who offended a Templar.

1 of the lions simply lays down in the middle of the arena, 3 of the others circle impatiently lowly growling (ready action)

the one in the middle looks slightly different from the rest, it is laying down, pawing at the dirt.
