The Keep On The Shadowfell
An Adventure Module DM'd By Bounty Hunter

http://i.imgur.com/dFa1X5C.jpg

This story begins with a small party of adventurers marching along a narrow dirt road that winds its way through scattered bits of forest, sparse scrub-lands, and rocky outcroppings of dark grey slate. Beneath their feet the road shows scattered signs of having once been paved and bits of cobblestones can be found poking though the rutted dirt from time to time. However well-maintained it may have once been, near a century of disrepair has left it overgrown in places and riddled in ruts and stones. Despite this, the little group carries on; talking among themselves and keeping a watchful eye out for danger.

Their destination is is the small town Winterhaven lies nestled at the southeastern edge of the region known as The Stonemarch. To the south of the small farming town lies the rolling hills of the Gardbury Downs, small bushes and rocky outcroppings dot the land. Following the road north from town, the elevation raises rather quickly and large wooded mountains begin to rise from the dense forest. It is here in the Cairngorm Peaks that an old dilapidated stone keep stands as the last symbol of a long forgotten empire. Originally a symbol of law and defense that kept a towering watch over the road and surrounding countryside, a chilling quiet now lingered over the area and the villagers dared not venture near it.

The Introduction

The Old Kings Road
Trade Route From Fallcrest To Winterhaven

As your party marches along the old King's Road, you make small talk and rejoice in the change in weather from the recent rains. The sun beams down warmly, but a light breeze on your faces keep you cool and comfortable. The road beneath your feet is level and firm though rutted in places. An occasional ancient cobblestone peeks through the dirt road, indicating it was once something more grandiose but has suffered from decades of neglect.

Only a few hours away is your destination: the small agricultural town of Winterhaven. It is here you hope to find Douven Stual, the man responsible for the creation of your company of adventurers. For several months he'd hired members of your party for various jobs, exploring old ruins or chasing after legends near forgotten by the sands of time. Each job larger the than last and requiring more hands...thus new hire-ons joined and soon there were a half dozen among you.

Douven set off towards Winterhaven just over a month ago, claiming he'd come accross a map with the location of a dragon's tomb somewhere in the wilderness nearby and hoped to 'inherit' its hoard. He was due to return several days ago, but so far there has been no word from him. This is very unlike him, even in the excitment of discovery he tends to be level-headed enough to keep in contact, especially with his loving wife. Having just finished several small adventures in the town of Fallcrest, you set off to find Douven with the blessing and thanks of his wife.

The warm spring sun hangs high in the sky hardly an hour or so past midday. At random intervals you can see marks left by carriages, and in the softer areas you can clear make out footprints. While some of them bear the hard impression of thick-soled boots, you also notice many were made by small, clawed feet.

She was the youngest member of the party, at only 11 years of age, standing just an inch taller than 4 feet. The girl had the look of someone that may be referred to as 'cute', with her long, wavy, golden blonde hair, sparkling blue eyes and sweet little face that lit up whenever she smiled or laughed.

Despite this picture of innocence, her attire was that of a tomboy. It consisted of a light blue shirt, brown pants, a pair of black boots and a hooded green cloak which partially concealed a backpack. But what might make her stand out was the way she presented herself when she travelled. Unlike most children her age, the girl could travel on long treks without getting tired for hours on end. From the way she travelled along the road, you'd think she were a veteran adventurer. The girl seemed comfortable on the road and in the wilderness, while not oblivious to possible danger, she was not afraid of it and showed some confidence in the way she travelled.

But in spite of her confidence, she was no fool. The girl stayed in the middle of the party, keeping two people both in front and in behind her. She was sociable but never let her attention waver from her surroundings. It was her dilligence that caused her to stop in her tracks and kneel down, saying, "Hold it guys. What are these clawed footprints?"

Nature Check to see what kind of creature made those clawed footprints. Perception Check to track the prints to which general direction they were heading.

"Ah, the King's Road. We meet again, old friend."

Although he had grown up traveling the southern arm of the King's Road, that was of little help here in the north. His previous experience of the tree-lined, shady, adventure filled south could not have prepared him for the drudgery of plodding through the Gardbury Downs of the north. His flute and companions kept him focused and alert but, oh, what he wouldn't give for the sound of the giggling White River nearby.

Jessica leaves his side to examine something in the road among the wagon rutts. Tracks? Animal, not beast of burden. Wild game would not be unexpected, but they would cross the road, not follow it as these seems to do. A little reconnaissance would break to monotony.

"Korran, can you make out what they are? Xilere, Camille, are they still around? They look small but can you tell their numbers? Good eye, Jess."

Glancing over at Michaelis, Korran nods before dropping down to one knee next to Jessica, the feathers and beads woven through a single braid of his hair softly clicking as he does so. He observes the tracks for a moment before pressing his hand to the ground next to both sets of tracks in kind, judging their size, depth, and length of stride.

Camille enjoys the warmth of the sun as she waxes and polishes her antiquated weapons. She'd never been on this section of the King's Road before- even in her days as a highwayman, she'd never really seen the north.

Bidden by Michaelis, she forgoes rust-proofing, sheathes her right-hand flail and moves to examine the prints. Adjusting her tie to avoid wrinkling it, she hunches down to observe the tracks.

"How very interesting, Miss Darkwood," she comments before adding, "I shall keep my eyes peeled, sir."

She stands up and tightens her collar again before looking out into the brush and trees- if there's anything there, she's resolved to find it.

Perception to see if anything's still out there.

As another cool breeze wraps its way through the trees on either side of the road the group studies the strange footprints in the soft mud. Korran and Jessica are able to correctly identify several different types of tracks. Wild animals have crossed the road in a few places, but more importantly a few sets of tracks have been left since the recent rain. They bear four long slender toes each tipped with a clawed nail. The tracks are erratic and head in both directions along the road and occasionally head off into the wilderness. As Camille scans the surrounding area it becomes apparent that the birds they had heard chirping earlier are no longer audible.

As Jessica avidly studies the tracks she tries to think what could have made them: Four long toes, each tipped with a claw, traveling in packs, and scurrying in what seems to be every direction. Kobolds!, she remembers Douven mentioning before he set off towards Winterhaven that there were reports of koblods in the area. Before she can tell the others movement catches the corner of her eye.

Encounter One : Kobold Brigands!

Just then...small, strange, creatures previously hiding behind the scattered boulders beside the road spring into everyone's view and begin to move toward you. They are slender with reptilian heads, large orange eyes, and dirty copper scales, their whip-like tails in a frenzy behind them as they sprint. Dressed in dilapidated rags, old worn leather armor and wielding spears and javelins, they let out shrill shrieks and gnash their teeth as they approach. You've just walked into a kobold raiding party!

Taking advantage of having surprised the adventurers, the kolbolds rush quickly and unleash a volley of thrown javelins. They shriek their warcries and continue to whip their tails. The single creature on the right-hand side of the road slings a javelin towards Korran but the throw goes wide and it whizzes in between him and Jessica, clattering off the ground behind them uselessly. Two of the creatures on the opposing side of the road then hurl their rough-made javelins at Michaelis, he sidesteps one easily but the other sinks into a soft spot between the scales of his armor. The final two kobolds cheer wickedly at the hit scored by their counterpart.

The small kobold furthest from the party beings to hear voices in it head, driving it into a rampage. It draws its spear hand back to hurl a javelin towards Korran but drops it before loosing it. The javelin clatters to the ground uselessly as the creature begins to try and cover its ear holes, clawing madly at the sides of its scaled head. Finally with a shriek of pain its eyes roll back into it's head as it drops to its knees, then collapses to the ground.

At this point Camille sees another creature behind a rock nearby, that had apparently been laying in wait for the group to move closer, but in seeing its companion die has decide to join in the fight: Another Kobold with rust colored scales, this creature wears a small suit of thick leather armor and has various ceramic globes hanging from a bandolier slung around its neck. Xilaere sighed gently inside the brush that was presently being used as her hiding spot. She truly hated when plans fall apart, especially when it is caused by the oafish bumblings of a group of sellswords. Discretion was rarely their strong suit, and on the rare chance that they understood it there was an equal chance they would rob you blind.

'Scratch that...I just hate the unfaithful in general' the elven woman thought to herself resolutely, pouncing out of the foliage and making a hook turn towards the nearest kobold with the intent of using the strangers for the one thing she knew they were good for: Distraction. The final kobold loads the jar into its sling and fire's it form safety hidden behind it's rock. Unable to properly brace for impact as the flail slams into it, his shield armor buckles and the large scale smashes into the creatures face. Shrieks of pain can be heard as the Kobold spits out several broken teeth and trails of blood begin to flow from its mouth... it tries feebly to raises its shield once more.

As he comes to his feet again has his back safely to a large boulder, keeping himself from getting surrounded as easily as second time. He comes up quick to face his two foes, but only finds one. The other lies snout first into the ground, still bleeding profusely from its mouth full of broken teeth. The other kobolds are visibly shaken by the felling of one of their superiors, but continue to fight on.

So again she makes a circular motion in the air and thrusts her wand up and down a little more violently than the last time out of frustration and the need to eradicate the threats in front of her.

"rapidi erupit!", she yells and suddenly a vertical column of golden flames erupts in between the kobold slinger and the minion in front of it.

Winterhaven
Village, Population 977
The rutted King’s Road leads to the foot of a broad hill that holds the walled village of Winterhaven. The village is nestled in the southern foothills of the Cairngorm Peaks. The walls are weathered grey stone topped by defensive palisades. Small thatched homes stand scattered about around Winterhaven, each fronting a small piece of farmland or pasture. Beyond the farms to the west and south lies a dark, thick forest, and to the north, the tall mountain peaks can be seen disappearing into the layer of clouds that hangs about them.

Most residents of Winterhaven have never traveled beyond the village vale. The majority of villagers are farmers, though the walled heart of Winterhaven employs various craftspeople as well. Wagons occasionally head east down old King’s Road from the town to find trade with the next village, Fallcrest, which as you know lies five days away. Sometimes wagons come into town, causing the villagers to excitedly gather in the Market Square to hear news of the outside world and to buy new and exotic goods.

One of them speaks up and warmly welcomes you to the village. "Greetings! Welcome to Winterhaven travelers. Are you perhaps traders from Fallcrest?" He smiles casually as he casually glances from one party member to the next curiously.

"I shall rectify my performance, sir," she assures him.

She sets off to the laborious task of cleaning her weapons and storing the looted materials as well as corpse disposal before the party leaves again.

"The vermin must be desperate. Perhaps travelers come up this way even less than we were led to believe," she suggests.

Jessica does not remember much about Winterhaven. She was only 6 years old when she left the town to go adventuring with her father. So there was no reminiscing of old times past here. She still wondered if her father's school and potion's shop was still here. Probably not. The place was not really familiar to her and yet very familiar to her. Instinctively it reminded her of home, but because of her very young childhood memories of it she felt or knew nothing of it. If that made sense.

"Greetings sir,", Jessica says to the guards with a respectful nod of her head, "We are actually here because a friend of ours came here a few weeks ago while hoping to explore a nearby dragon's tomb. He was supposed to return to Fallcrest weeks ago but we have not heard from him since and his wife is worried. His name is Douven Stahl. Also we were attacked by kobold brigands but we were able to defeat them. Is that common around heres?"

WinterHaven Gate

The guard shakes his head a little and glances to his companion who shakes his head in return. No. No ma'am I'm afraid I don't know anyone by the name Douven, but of course there's not way I could get the name of every trader who comes through. Perhaps you could ask around at the inn though, anyone that comes through out little town ends up there at one point or another. He motions over his shoulder towards a large wooden building through the gate. "And regarding the kobolds, we've been hearing more and more tales about them, you may want to have a word with Rond Kelfem in town if you find the time."

"Well met. We may have to have a word with Mr. Kelfem. These kobolds may also have waylaid the traders you're looking for, if they are overdue. Ah, it's been a span since Winterhaven felt so good beneath my boots. Is the inn still around the way?" he asks, gesturing in a twisted, convoluted manner. "We also scored a bit of ruffage from the highwaymen we'd like to have off our backs. Is there a market scheduled soon or a buyer in town?"

Xilaere (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=659713)

Xilaere had decided to tag along with the group of adventurers she'd met on the road. The kobold ambushers that seemed so common on the road now were an issue of concern, and though a small group they were quite effective at dispatching them. At the very least, perhaps the town of Winterhaven would offer some answers as to why they ravaged the land unchecked or at least have some clue as to where they were coming from.

The elven woman nods politely to the two guards, adjusting her cloak beneath her backpack slightly. She directs her question to the first guard, but glances to the second as she asks. "Rond Kelfem? Is he captain of your guard, or the mayor? And where might we find him?"

And yes, Wrafton's Inn still stands proudly just inside the gate. he states, clearly more excited to know that Michaelis had been in town before.

"We also scored a bit of ruffage from the highwaymen we'd like to have off our backs. Is there a market scheduled soon or a buyer in town?""You're in luck!" He exclaims and then glances over his right shoulder, back through the gate. "Well, might still be in luck. The market was quite busy today, you might find a merchant who's got some coin to spend yet. But the suns going down, pretty soon they'll put aside business in favor of a tankard of ale.

In response to the question posed by Xilaere, the guard informs you that Rond Kefem is captain of the Winterhaven Regulars, the small group that patrols the city and her walls. And that he can be found either in the Warriors Guild, the Barracks, or on patrol if its his shift. You thank the guards for their help and information and then head through the gate.

As you pass beneath the large stone gate and come into the walled town, your view is predominately dominated by the large wooden building directly in front of you. As you round the southern corner of the building a large carved, wooden sign is planted firmly in the ground. The sign is painted dark brown and accented with large bright yellow letters reading 'Wrafton's Inn'. Before you lies the wide dirt area of Market Square, where several wagons have been positioned and a couple of merchants and traveling tradesmen are flashing their wares to several villagers who have gathered. The area bustles with activity in the warm afternoon sun, and the sounds of people talking, children playing, and of horses from the nearby Stables fill the air around you. Once you're noticed, several people look your direction curiously, as if expecting more traders, but then go back about their business.

Wrafton’s Inn

This spacious inn and tavern serves as the public house for the region. Like alehouses everywhere, Wrafton’s Inn offers beer, wine, and, on occasion, spirits. Meals are served for those with the coin, and beds for travelers are available. A crowd of villagers gathers each night to drink, gossip, sing, and play games of chance.

A fire crackles in the hearth, and a young human woman tends to the bar. If asked, she introduces herself as Salvana Wrafton, the owner and proprietor of the establishment. Several of the townsfolk gather here already, as the afternoon beings to slowly fade into evening, they take a break from hard lives on the farm and busy days in town and they gather here to enjoy themselves. This early though in the afternoon though a full crowd has yet to gather, a few people gather around one of the central tables, an older gentleman who looks to be a tired old farmer sits at a table in the corner, and an elven woman sits off to the side alone looking lost in thought and looking quite stiff and bitter.

After passing by carts full of produce, farming supplies, and various other agricultural good, they come to a gruff looking human who has a stand piled high with various furs. Some look to be the pelts of wolves, but for the most part mainly bits of leather, small hides, and various pouches and belts made from the same material. He greets them warmly, and after a bit of chatter back and forth offers to buy the ragged bits of leather and the suit of armor they have at the price of 5 gold pieces for the intact armor, and 2 gold peices 5 silver pieces for the scraps.

Regardless of whether they accept, as they go to leave his stand he calls out "You might be able to sell yer dagger, as well as tha' sling and bullets here in the market, but for most of those weapons I'd give a visit to Thair the town smithy at his shop though Bairwin may have some coin to spend as well." Michaelis begins head along the path from the Market Square, though still the same dirt as the road outside town, the road is wide enough for five men to walk abreast and well maintained. Barely a few steps down the road, a path to his left leads to wooden, one-story building with a thatched roof and stone chimney. The elaborate metal sign hanging in front shows a crossed staff and sword and proudly proclaims "Bairwin's Grand Shoppe" in crimson red. Directly opposite, on the right hand side of the road is a building that is cearly the town smith. The stone building is crafted of the same stone as the mighty walls, and the black shingles of the roof sport a fairly recent coat of paint. Smoke from the chimney rises lazily into the sky before being wisked away by the breeze far above. The blacksmith shop is one story tall, and one its wester side an awning of sorts juts out, under which a portly drawf works diligently at a forge and anvil. Thair Coalstriker sports dark auburn hair pulled back in a ponytain and his thick dwarven beard is littered with flecks of debris and dark marks of soot and the like. He stops hammering on a horseshoe as he notices Michaelis approaching. "Good Evenin'!"

Deciding to make her way to the inn, she glances about to see if she can find Camille or to see if Michaelis had finished at the town blacksmith. As Xilaere enters the inn she breathes a sigh of relief, eager to have a sit-down after the long day traveling, and adjust the pack on her back before striding over to Korran at the bar.

Turning back to the old farmer, he leaned in closer to him, his eyes shifting around quickly again to observe anyone who might be listening. "Since you are the historian....what can you tell me about some sort of strange cult around here. A friend of mine thinks there is some sort of activity in the area. Normally, I don't fancy poking my nose into those types of things, but for her.....let's just say I owe her."

"Aye, I'm Rond Kefem, I run the Regulators here in the villiage, is there somethin' you need help with?" His demeanor his friendly, but the wear of a long day on duty is visibile to the keen eye. With each movement the light chain shirt he wears jingles slightly and the wooden scabbard at his hip waves back and forth occasionally knocking into the wooden bar stool.

In answer to Finn's question the old farmer flashes a look of confusion. Cult? What like a death cult or something? The inflection in his voice showing both confusion and curiousity at the idea of a cult here in the small villiage, being nothing but a handful of farms struggling to get by. "Whatcha reckon, they sacrifice people to the Raven Queen, or perhaps some foul demon?" Turning to Jessica he can see the concern she shows in wanting to make sure Douven is alright. I'd love to drive those blasted kobold raiding parties back to whatever foul pit that spawned them, but the Winterhaven Regulars have their hands full as it is. Not Lord Padriag has been able to rouse the militia into a sizable force to strike at their lair." He sighs again and takes another long drink of his ale before continuing. No, I dont believe I recall anyone by that name coming through here, though thats not to say that he didnt. Between training the militia, keeping the guards on point, and running patrols of my own I'm usually a bit busy to meet everyone who comes through town. Your small group finishes up breakfast and packs up their gear, once everyone is ready you pass beneath the large stone gate on the eastern side of town and begin your journey along the road to the south. You find it in much the same condition as the Old King's Road, but the road is decent enough that you find yourselves making good time. Within the hour you should be leaving the road to head through the woods and towards the Burial Site. It is still a few hours before mid day.

The sun is warm, and there are a few scattered clouds that occasionally cloak the area in shade before slowly passing on and beyond the mountains to the west. Small breezes wisp through the trees along the road, causing a rustle of leaves accompanied by the various sounds of wildlife.

Finn, Michaelis, and Xilaere discuss the previous attack by kobold brigands and whether may be tied to the alleged cult activity in the area. Xilaere keeps a watchful eye out for any dangers as they march along. At the rear of the gorup Korran and Jessica discuss a more somber topic regarding the past activities of the cult leader Kalarel resulting in the death of her father.

Suddenly, there is quick movement on the other side of the large clumps of bushes on each side of the road. Xilaere's keen eyes catch it first, several small shapes are moving quitely or laying in wait. As she starts starts to call out to the group, the figures leap from their hiding places screeching shrill war cries. Three of them carry longswords and shields crafted from scales much like before. One of the kobolds is dressed in black leather armor and wielding a spear and a smaller shield. The final figure, wears a helmet crafted of a carved bleach-white skull, his leather armor is dyed red and bone trinkets hang from it, rattling as it moves and thrusts its spear skyward with battle cries.

The kobolds rush through the thick bushes and the group of adventurers screeching warcries and brandishing their weapons. Two of them, one with sword and shield, the other with raised spear, rush down the road at full speed teeth bared. Two more approach through the bushes to the east of the road and bear down on the group. The final creature rattles its bone effigy and spins its staff in a slow circle before unleashing a hurtling bolt of acid which catches Michaelis squarely, splashing against his armor and burning through the softer spots to the flesh beneath.

As the group stand victorious over the group of kobold ambushers and treats their wounds the sound of birds in the trees slowly begins to rise again. Michaelis kneels over the final dragonshield to find it unconscious and suffering from wounds caused by the orb of acid Finn had leveled at it. Closer inspection reveals that though faint, a heartbeat alludes to the the creature still being alive.

Meanwhile Xilaereand Korran scout the area and find no traces of any more enemies lying in wait. They do find various tracks scattered about the area, weaving between the rocks and bushes, most likely from when the creatures were preparing their hiding places.

Michaelis if you wish to try and revive the kobold, make a heal check.

They run around between the variou positions where they lay in ambush, but eventually he finds a decernable trail leading into the woods east of the road seeming headling due east.

Though Finn is unsure how to help, Michaelis is able to treat enough of the wounds on the kobold and wash enough of the acid out that the kobold shouldnt take any further injury. After a few moments the creature coughs and sputters a few times and then opens its dark copper-colored eyes slightly and glares at the figures bent over it. While Michaelis bends over the Wyrmpriest he examines the crumpled body of the fallen ritualist. Its armor is mostly crude rags and bone, serving no real benefit to the adventurers, but a few coins of gold are found in a small ratty pouch slung over its shoulder, and its spear seems sturdy enough to be used in a pinch. After a closer examination of the effigies and trinkets, Michaelis finds a necklace tucked beneath its tunic; a chain necklace from with dangles a small dragon figurine of carved obsidian, closer inspection finds that on the bottom there is an outline etching of a skull with ram's horns.

Finn searches through the dragonshield's belonging and finds a few coins in the pocket of its leather armor. The creature was brandishing a shortsword that, while a bit dirty and sporting a few nicks in the blade, is still very much a sound weapon. It also carried a dragonscale which had been turned into an improvised shield via two leather straps.

As Zhuge examines the necklace the hairs on the back of his neck stand up as he realizes the crude scratches bear a resemblance to the insignia of Orcus, demon prince, and lord of the undead. He is rumored to be one of the most powerful demons in the Abyss - powerful enough to threaten gods. The demon prince is a foul and corpulent humanoid creature who has powerful goat legs and a desiccated head similar to that of a ram while a pair of great wings stir up a reeking cloud of diseased air around him and his thick, spiny tail is in constant motion.

The necklace however does not appear to have any magical properties, and looks to be solely for ceremonial and status purposes.

Michaelis looks over the other bodies and finds the other two draonshields to be carrying more or less the same gear as the one Finn had searched. The final corpse, that of the skimisher, lays on the ground near Tengar and Korran. The Burial Site

As the group tidies up the corpses and removes anything of value from them, Zhuge sets out ahead of the group and scouts in the direction of the rumored dragon burial site. He leaves rutted road and begins their trek into the unknown wilderness to the southeast.

For the first half hour or so they are able to navigate around small clumps of trees and short, but steep, cliffsides dotted with large boulders. After which the trees start to become more and more bunched together, and the land begins to rise and fall, all the while the hills to the east grow taller and taller. There are no mountains, but the large hills of Gardbury Downs dominate the horizon in that direction anytime a break in the trees can be found. On his journey the he encounters random sightings of wildlife and crosses a few game trails, but doesn't encounter any beasts that would pose a threat. The rest of the party encounters much of the same as they move through the wilderness two dozen or so minutes behind him.

Finally, they begin to near the point on the map that had been drawn by the old farmer in town and Zhuge finds himself in a small clearing, the sounds of voices can be heard somewhere in the distance confirming that they must be near their destination. He peaks through a line of trees and sees a large steep-sided crater punctures the wilderness. Near the center of the depression, several humanoid figures cluster around a collection of bones. Two small, dragonlike creatures near the crater rim stand alert. Moving any closer to the crater may alert them of your presence.

The group arrives at the burial site shortly after meeting up with Zhuge once more. They find the area exactly as he described: A steep-sided crater punctures the wilderness, its dirt walls fresh from recent excavation over the last several months. Three slopes lead down into the center of the depression, where several humanoid figures cluster around a collection of bones. Two small, dragonlike creatures near the crater rim stand alert and stare at your approach.

Zhuge is able to deftly break away from the group and take cover among the dead trees nearby, but the drakes have caught wind of the other adventurers and watch as they near the crater.
