Mouth agape... the words fail Thorael. Unconsiously his mouth closes as he thinks about whats happening. Again, his mouth hangs open in Disbelief. A flurry of red robes, the Elf springs into action. Moving into position next to the Cart, he begins barking orders. "Cal... forget the arrows, get in the Cart, get out some Rope, and drop it at your feet. I may be able to save us or at least you if it gets out of hand."

Shouting now.. "RAS!! Forget the damage, we'll never take him that way!! Protect yourself, Save it for your healing and protections, and don't get Hit!!! Keep it's attention!! I may be able to disable HIM!! Fall Back to the cart if it gets too ugly!!!"

Looking now at his apprentice... "Summon your Mount... we need to give him something else to snack on!" The goblin snaps out of his state, focused on the task at hand. "ICK BALLAK ZJAHK" and with a sickly green poof, a nice fat pony appears several yards infront of the cart.

Giving a glance to the side to get the full-bred elf in her peripheral vision for a second, she turns her attention back to the troll, grinning confidentally to herself. The searing light seems to have angered the troll. In a swift motion, it lunges in to action. The troll quickly runs in a charging manner towards Rasellia. Its massive claw rakes the front of her as it almost topples her over with the first blow. She cries out in pain.

The troll has a -2 to AC this round. Rasellia needs to make a Fort save DC 19.

Fort save (DC 19): [roll0]

2007-09-07, 01:48 PM
Rasellia's body hits the water and submerges into the dark water

Rasellia is paralyzed

Paralyzed

A paralyzed character is frozen in place and unable to move or act. A paralyzed character has effective Dexterity and Strength scores of 0 and is helpless, but can take purely mental actions. A winged creature flying in the air at the time that it becomes paralyzed cannot flap its wings and falls. A paralyzed swimmer can’t swim and may drown. A creature can move through a space occupied by a paralyzed creature—ally or not. Each square occupied by a paralyzed creature, however, counts as 2 squares.

Drowning

Any character can hold her breath for a number of rounds equal to twice her Constitution score. After this period of time, the character must make a DC 10 Constitution check every round in order to continue holding her breath. Each round, the DC increases by 1. See also: Swim skill description.

When the character finally fails her Constitution check, she begins to drown. In the first round, she falls unconscious (0 hp). In the following round, she drops to -1 hit points and is dying. In the third round, she drowns.

It is possible to drown in substances other than water, such as sand, quicksand, fine dust, and silos full of grain.

Using its powerful claws, the Swamp Troll rips the ropes and harness connecting the dead donkey from the cart and begins to munch upon the caucus. Part of you feels sick from watching your beloved donkey being eaten, but another part is glad that the troll is no longer coming after you. You wonder if the troll is even aware or cares that you are still around. You start to think that this maybe how rabbits feel after a wolf has caught one of them.

Note: The troll will continue to eat until its full or until you make a move.

"Yeah.. im not sure if that would have dropped her half way up, or slipped around her neck as a noose... Anyway." Thorael takes the other end of the rope, and coils 16 feet into his arms. Standing on the rope, he touches the loose end and mutters the arcane words. "VOUS CHIENE STUPIDE". Quickly the rope raises into the air. "Watch Gilly... go", Gilly Leaps onto the rope, and just as quickly slips off, with an audible splash! landing face first in the muck. Placing his left palm upon his face, Thorael shuts his eyes tightly, rubs said face and tries to come to grips with what exactly is going on around here...

You all manage to get into the magically secure place and pull Rasellia up into there as well. The minutes seem to tick by like hours, then you hear thrashing around outside. Peaking your head out, you see the troll smashing around in your wagon. It then takes one more large bite out of Bongo and then starts walking southwest. At this moment Rasellia starts to slowly come alive once again, her whole body feeling like part of it has been asleep.

Scooter (I cannot remember your character's name]

You have been looking for your Wizard companion Akar for a few hours now. Wondering through the swamp has been hard work. You think that you have found his trail, tracking in this environment has not been easy, especially with a foot of water to trudge through. You come around a tree and you see a wagon, which look to be in disrepair, there appears to be horse standing there looking rather confused. Then you see a troll lumbering away from the broken cart. You feel a tightening in your stomach as you watch the beast leaving. You wonder if there are any survivors of this troll ambush.

The swamp troll finally saunters off to the southwest and after a few moments a man slowly creeps forward towards the wagon from the east (Korlarth please describe yourself).

Korlarth
You come upon the broken wagon, it appears to be in poor shapes after the troll had its way with it. The wagon has a broken tongue, a smashed apart wheel, and what you think might be a broken axle. There are muddy troll prints throughout the back side of the cart where it flung things around. You see a half eaten mule which is what you guess the troll was munching on. You wonder why you do not see any bodies around, maybe there might be survivor or they could have been left under the water.

Korlarth examines the cart, a silent prayer whispered through his lips for the poor mule. Brushing back his fire red hair, he begins to scan the the area for signs of the owner of this now destroyed cart. His chain shirt clinks slightly as his 5'11" body moves deftly through the murky water. He slowly draws his long sword from it's sheath with his left hand while his right unconciously pulls his hand axe from off of it's resting place on his belt. His eyes alert for any signs of of life he begins circling around the cart, hoping to pick up the tracks of the owner. He knows that if they are injured, they will be needing all the help he can offer.

Karlarth seems a bit confused. As he stands here in the open area, he can tell that people were here a short time ago by the stirred up murk in the water and a few bloodstained weeds. "Cal... prepare to defend us. We stirred up that Troll. It will be on our heads if this poor bastage gets eaten by him. I've still got a trick or two up my sleeve if he gets out of control..."

Waiting for an acknowledging nod from the noblemen, Thorael Unfirls the rope back out the magical window. Poking his head out, he hollars out to the stranger.

"You there. Yes you... the genius with the red hair. Heloo... up here. Yes, we um, have seemed to have annoyed a particularly Large swamp troll who is now rampaging the nearby country side. Terribly sorry. Couldn't be avoided. Regardless, would feel awful if you got eaten due to our, um... miscalculation. I wish to offer you sanctuary in our extra dimensional space if you so desire. A bit startled, Karlarth looks up at the voice. Seeing the head poking out, he smiles.

"Do not worry about the Troll. He has had his fill and has moved on. I would assume that the cart and now deceased beast of burden was yours. I'm afraid that it did not survive the encounter."

He points his long sword over toward the mangled beast that had provided the troll with lunch. He looks back up.

"As much as up there seems cozy, I am afraid that I must decline. I am employed as a guide for a daft mage, who like always, enjoys sneaking off on me when my back is turned. I have been looking for him most of the day when I stumbled upon you and your friends. You haven't seen him by chance? Akar is his name. A bit shorter than myself and a bit more portly than myself?"

Karlarth does a quick scan of the area while awaiting a response.

A pang of guilt washes over Karlarth at the mention of the corpse. He had warned him numerous times to not wander off. He looks over to where the stranger pointed.

"If you will excuse me, I must go check. I pray that it isn't him though"

Karlarth sloshes through the water, a few choice curses mumbled under his breath as he goes and investigates the corpse.

Calthoric keeps a steady bead on the new comer while remaining away from the entrance to remain concealed. He completely forgot about the troll dragging anything until Thoreal mentioned it again. Trusting the word of what appears to be a ranger of moderate skill he climbs back down the rope looking to the others. "I am going to secure the cart I do not think the troll will be back and if it does return I am curious to the reaction of this stranger. He might prove useful to our cause as he seems to have less trouble negotiating this swamp then we do.

Moving from the rope to the cart he keeps Karlarth in his peripheral vision.

Karlarth slogs thought the swamp, after a few moments he starts to wonder if the individuals who he has just met are trying to trick him. However, that feeling is replaced by a much more unsettling feeling as he sees part of a familiar red robe floating to the surface from under the water. A rock seems to have grown in his stomach as he slowly reaches down and pulls up a body....then with a gasp of horror he realizes that the body he is holding is missing its head. The robe itself seems to be that of the wizard Akar.

Note: there is no sign of the troll except for a trail in the murk leading south where it must have traveled.

Slowly Korlarth slides the body back into the water. A silent prayer accompanies his actions as he returns the body back to nature. His demeanor changes, as he has never lost the life of any of his charges. He slowly returns to where the strangers had slowly come out of hiding.

"It seems that my previous employer has taken his last unguarded stroll through dangerous territory. If you would like, I could guide you through the swamp. It appears that I have no other duties to attend to now"

Thorael begins his decent from the planar portal. "Gee willikers stranger. That sounds like a wonderful proposition. Golly whiz, you clearly look like i would expect a guide to. Do you have any references we could.... oh, wait." He sighs, rolls his eyes, and shakes his head as he begins to walk in the direction of the ranger. "Whats worse, is it appears that your former employer was the one to stir up the troll, and not us. Granted we'd still have a cart an mule had we not gotten a bit overzealous." Thorael stops feet from the stranger, and tilts his head slightly observing the corpse under the water. "I am familiar with the final resting rights of several religious beliefs. We should take proper care of this corpse. You mentioned his name. Abjar or something... was he a close friend?"

Korlarth looks at the newcomer, a bit confused at his strange monikers. Getting past that, he replies.

" I had only known the wizard Akar for a short time. I had met his acquaintance in the town of Nesmee. Actually, the outskirts of the city really. I was out and about setting my snares for dinner when I found him wandering around the brush. I approached him after he demolished one of my rabbit traps. He had told me he was on a mission to foster friendlier relations with the lizardfolk. He was clearly lost and without sufficent skills to last for long in the wilderness. I offered him my services as a guide. He quickly took me up on my offer and we started out."

Korlarth takes a moment to pull out his wineskin and take a long drink from it. Satisfied that his thirst is quenched, he continues.

"So we set out towards this here swamp. It quickly became apparent that his sense of direction and survival skills were sorely lacking. He habitually began wandering off, sure that the location he sought was just around the next tree. He would wander off as I took my rest, thinking that he could easily find his way back to me once he had discovered the lizardfolk. That never happened of course and I was forced to go track him down. I guess finally his luck ran out."

Once again, he bows his head slightly in the direction of the beheaded body.

"As for your offer, if you would be willing that would be most kind of you. I can tell you what plant is edible or what plant will keep you in an outhouse for a week, but the rites for a proper burial are beyond my knowledge."

While Thoreal and the ranger converse trying to determine each others usefulness Calthoric pulls a winter blanket from the wagon and head to the decapitated body. Once there he begins to wrap the body tightly so no part of him is exposed. After the body is wrapped tightly he drags the corpse back to the wagon and lays it in the cart. "Fortunately ..." Calthoric waves his hands in an encouraging motion to coax a name from him. "We have a priestess in our company. I am Calthoric Wintersbane of the northern territories. Forgive our trepidation but we have met many who are not as they say they are and then some that are as they say their not. We have recently suffered misfortune and have no means of payment for the services you offer. With that being said it is still more advantageous to travel the wilds of this swamp with greater numbers then alone. Perhaps when a town is reached an further arrangement can be made depending, of course, on the how adept your skills truly are."

I search the body and pilfer whatever it is I can if anything while wrapping it.

Smiles at the new face.

"Well, good thing I didn't mention anything about payment now did I? Having traveling companions through these swamps is good enough for me. As for my skills," I can tell ya that even though I ain't a cart maker, unless you plan on hoistin that thing on your back, it's not going anywhere. I don't think a single thing on that is usable. And if it were, your mule there wont be pulling it anytime soon"

He walks over to where his deceased charge lay, wrapped up in the blanket.

"As for that body, I wouldn't suggest that we bring it along. There are enough carrion in these swamps that will take care of it. And even though that troll has departed with a full belly, the scent of the rotting carcass will certainly draw him or others like him."

I'm not be going anywhere till after that time. If you intend on going after the troll, and wish my aid, you'll need to speak up. It may have a chance at influencing my spell preparation..." The mage begins heading back toward the rope. "Good idea Cal. Let the wen... ... Let the Priestess deal with the corpse. Remaining quiet in response to Thorael's indirect taunts, the "priestess" slides down the rope stiffly. Rotating an arm as she tries to get rid of the aching, she gives Calthoric a helpless look. "Unfortunately, training at the church didn't encompass all elements of the Faith. I know some rudimentary ceremonies, simply from observing them, but I haven't been instructed as such." Turning to the ranger, she gives a nod - the usual polite smile absent in the presence of her current humility. "Calthoric is right; theres safety in numbers, and if you were there with us when we fought the troll, things might have gone a lot differently. I wouldn't mind an extra pair of arms. I'll perform what services I can for your former charge - and our poor beast. And you say there's nothing salvageable on the cart...? That's too bad, I spent a lot of money on all of that..."

Here is what you are able to salvage from the Cart

Cart:
{table]Item:|Weight
Cart|200
Bedroll x4 (soaked with water and oil)|20
Winter Blanket x4 (soaked with water and oil)|12
Firewood(per day) x7|140
Common Lantern|1

Rations(per day) x28 x8|28
Waterskin x4|16
Oil(pint) x5|5
Healer's Kit|1
Total:|477 lbs.
[/table]

You start to examine the remnants of the cart a strong smell of oil fills your lungs. You realize that the extra oil for the lanterns has spilled out. There are a few items that you are able to salvage but a lot of the items are beyond repair. You head up into the extradimentional space for the night and wake up early in the morning fearful that the spell will end. As you memorize/pray/whatever the spell ends dropping the rope down into the murk.

Change your spells if needed. Will you continue west (you have 5 more days of travel till you reach the town)

Sighing, Rasellia takes a look at the items she salvaged from the cart and dragged up into the extraplanar space."Well guys, I bought enough to do for the four of us - excluding our new company, of course - for a good week... but now most of it is ruined. The rations that remain will do us not even for 2 days, and the blankets and mattresses are soaked with oil. I'm already fairly heavily-loaded, but I can carry a few more pounds. I have a tent with me anyway, so that'll do for accomidations..." Humming to herself before she starts to ramble, she responds to Thorael's question.

"I think if you prepare offensive spells, it will do both purposes... there's only so fast we can go in this muck, but if we're well-defended against any other creatures, we'll make slower, but probably steadier progress."

We'll have to divvy the contents out as best we can take only what is needed. I know some death ceremonies on terrain such as this is burning as it is unsuitable land to bury into the ground. Perhaps a pray will satisfy the ... requirements of the gods? and then we can set the cart a blaze and be gone. to town. I can Summon 4 mounts which can carry some gear. They will only appear with Bit, bridle and a riding saddle, but with some creative rope use i believe we can secure all of the salvaged gear. I will put Gilly to work immediately cleaning that which remains, Shouldn't take but an hour to prepare... and we can be on the road. I do seem to be short on powdered silver, and horse hair. You guys didn't come across any spell components or anything when you were preparing Ubars body for the hear after. He certainly wont be needing it. In fact, if he worshiped the aspect of Magic, he needs to be stripped of all worldly possessions, and burned with his head facing south, lest he be judged as greedy..." Thorael climbs down the rope, and sets Gilly to prestidigitating clean all of the tents, rope, and anything else that quasi salvageable. He then summons 4 magnificent stallions. "These beasts will last 1 full day. I'd suggest someone savvy with rope craft work on the harnesses and such, and someone needs to keep a look out while we break camp here. Westward!"

Korlarth walks over to the newly summoned beasts and gives them a quick inspection. Finding no flaws with them, he turns to the mage.

"As I do not know the strengths or weakness of your companions, I must abstain from offering any suggestions as to what you should prepare for the day. I can, however, offer my assistance as to how to get out of this forsaken swamp and to the outskirts of civilization." He turns towards the headless body of his late charge "I highly doubt that how his head faces is going to matter much."

Korlarth goes about collecting his gear. At the sound of an eagle flying over, Korlarth smiles. He finds a decent size lizard lounging on a mossy tree branch and quickly grabs it. Neeth, his magnificent animal companion, will surely appreciate the tasty morsel later.

I mistakenly placed gilly on a horse, disregard gillys horse, i assume that he is ridding with Thoreal

Gathering up your belonging and trying them to the magical beasts of burden you get ready for another day’s journey. With a few strikes of his flint and steel, Calthroic gets the cart ablaze, your nose if filled with the queasy smell of burning flesh. You silently say a prayer for the soon to be forgotten Aker and realize how easily it could have been you yesterday.

You travel for about an hour, your horse walking through the muddy landscape, and suddenly you feel a few drops upon your head. Then without warning, the drops turn into a downpour of rain. You continue heading west, or at least that is the direction that you hope Korlarth is leading you (Korlarth Survival check to keep from getting lost DC 18). The rain continues and you find yourself so focused upon the next step that your horse makes. You find that the horses seem to be struggling trudging forward in murky muddy water.

The day light starts to wane and soon you realize that it will be completely dark it has been a long day of traveling and you realize that you have at least a day’s walk or several more hours trudging through the dark to find your way out of this swamp (if you are not lost). It is at that point that a loud commotion snaps you out of your daydreaming. You have entered the outskirts of a clearing, you see six large swamp trolls to the southwest who look to be pushing each other around as they try to get mouthfuls of a large corpse. You heart starts to race, you wonder if they have seen you, will they see you? You exchange glances and then you see something else to the west. It looks to be a house on stilts with a staircase leading up the front to a porch. You see smoke billowing out of the chimney and a wonderful smell fills your lungs. You are not sure what the smell is but you know that it is not coming from the corpse the trolls are fighting

Trying to stay focussed on the task at hand, Rasellia can't help but be reminded of the day before the fateful meeting with Thorael, Bolvar, and Calthoric in the ill-fated inn. The miserable rain weighing down on her clothing and spirits, the near-death experience also didn't help to quell the unpleasant memories.

She almost finds herself thankful for the immediate problem as it presents itself, her militaristic instincts flaring for a moment before she gets herself in check. Gripping the reins of the conjured steed, she addresses the so-called brains of the outfit. "Though I doubt you'll say it, Thorael, give the word, and I'm ready."

Rasing a surprised eyebrow, Thorael glances sideways at Rasellia, and gasps a mumbled "Interesting..." Taking a moment to survey the situation, and each of his companions in check, he stares back out upon the scene. wispering "...unless you can ask your god to shroud us in a veil of silence, we need to fall back. Its getting dark, and those Trolls are built to hunt at night. About 500 yards back there was a small patch of high ground. I can set up the rope trick. We can unload the gear, while Korlarth keeps an eye on this situation. Set free the horses, were not going much farther here tonight. Then we can come back and observe. Things get bad, we have an escape route. Not sure if thats the house's occupant they have there, or if they're in with the occupant. Either way we'll be in a position to Aid, Flee, Observe, or perhaps finish off the trolls that survive that scrum. Perhaps theyll kill eachother. Engaging now... i beleive... would be folly..."

Korlarth leads the party on, a bit unsure that he is heading in the right direction. The darkness begins playing tricks on his vision and his confidence begins to wane.

Upon sighting the trolls, he quickly dismounts and unslings his bow. Listening to the mage, he nods in agreement.

"I agree. Right now, we are no match for those beasts. After seeing what they can do, a half dozen of them would certainly slaughter us. Go make camp, I will keep an eye on them to make sure they do no come your way.

With that, Korlarth attempts to slip into the shadows where he can observe the trolls.

As Karlorth sits and watches the trolls feast upon the large corpse, he sees something interesting from the house. A small man bald man wearing a brown cloak, maybe a halfing or a gnome, comes out of the house to watch the trolls from the porch. You think that he sees you because he keeps looking in your direction and then starts to wave at you.

Korlarth walks up the steps cautiously, unnocking his bow in the process. His hands brush up against the handles of his weapons involuntarily as he sizes up the gnome standing before him.
"My name is Korlarth Tarvalla. I was out this way as a guide for my late employer. He was seeking out the lizardfolk before he meet up with a rather temperamental troll. Perchance one of those ones who are dining in your yard there." He points to the Trolls who are savagely tearing through the carcass. I had stumbled upon a small party who had a rather unpleasant encounter with that troll as well. They are off right now setting up camp. I was tasked with keeping an eye on those trolls there to make sure they didn't interrupt them. If you don't mind, I'll sit a spell for a while, until those creatures are gone before retrieving them. It is mating season for trolls and I hope that after a good meal that they will be settling down for a nice romp in the swamp, if you know what I am saying." The gnome winks at Korlarth and takes out a book and a pen from under his robe. "If safety is what your friends are looking for then I would suggest having them come here. This shelter is protected against trolls, they cannot even see us watching. When swamp trolls have their food they are generally harmless, in less you try to take away their food or get between them and their food. Speaking of food, I have been a rather poor host, would you like some stew. I must warn you, many find their stomach upset after eating the stew but others love it. I happen to love it and its medicinal properties. I will get us a bowl." Without waiting for an answer he rushes into the hut and returns with two bowls of steaming hot soup. He hands you a bowl. As you peer into the bowl you see a dark sludgy water with leaves sticks and large greenish white chunks which you believe to be chunks of some type of meat. The stew smells wonderful and you see the gnome greedily eating his. "If you decide to not eat yours, I will gladly finish it for you."

If you fail...
The stew tastes hideously, it tastes like the gnome has taken swamp water and heated it up. You have never tasted something so vial in your life. You feel bile in your mouth and before you realize it your stomach contents are now inside the bowl and on the deck. The gnome frowns at you "Well I guess I am not going to eat it now. Sorry chap, I guess the stew did not agree with your stomach I have some day old bread and some dried fish would that be better?." The trolls have turned even more savage with each other as seem to be wrestling together in a large pile. You see the gnome Karlorth described sitting in a chair watching and scribbling inot a book. He does not seem to notice you until you step upon the stairs on his deck. "Helloo," he warmly greets you," I am Professor BibbleVop, but you can call me Valious. Anyways, I am sure that Korlarth testified to the my wonderful strew, lets go in and have a bowl or two and you can tell me why you are in the swamp and where you are going."

The professor enters the hut and you finish unloading the horses before reluctantly following the gnome inside. Inisde the hut is fairly nice, there are plenty of books on the shelves along with papers scattered along the floor. You smell the wonderful smell from before and you see the professor filling bowls and passing them to each of you. The professor starts quickly gobbling down a bowl and while he is getting another bowl ready for himself, he asks, "So tell me, why are you here?" Karlorth also is greedily eating down his bowl of stew.

Calthoric plays with the stew before him with his spoon before he sets it down on table near the pot. Thank you for your generous offer Professor BibbleVop. I am Calthoric Wintersbane of the northern territories." Calthoric bows low and regally in a practiced manner. "Your book on lizard folk has been almost a handbook for my house and I have declared it required reading due to the unprecedented recent activity of their kind as of late. I look forward to being able to read your works on trolls. Currently we are trying to negotiate trade routes with the city that lays west of the swamps and are traveling through the swamps to determine how difficult travel will be to get goods back and forth. Back to the point brought on by the mention of your book, I understand there are lizard folk in this swamp as well. Can you tell me of the clans of the area and any recent dealings that you might have had with them?"

The professor looks excited that you read his book. "What did you think about the thoughts on cohabitation of cities? You see that in the far south lizardfolk actually have huge stone cities in the marshes. They are quite impressive. Unfortunately, the lizardfolk up here in the north are not quite as civilized as the southern folk. However, in chapter 5 i postulate that we should think of ways that we can help the lizardfolk instead of hunting them in the swamps. I am guessing since your family enjoys my book that you are keen on my ideas of treaties with teh lizardfolk and hopefully incorporating them into our society, much like you are doing traveling with a goblin. As far as my dealing with the lizardfolk in this area, as you recall from chapter 2 through 4, i lived with the lizardfolk here in this area for almost 5 years. I still keep in regular touch with them. They really do help out the town by lowering the troll population. Did you know that both Lizardfolk and Trolls find each other delicious?

So you are in the business of transporting bake goods. Have you been to the town in the west? I am not really sure that transport through the swamp is the best way....let alone, why would they really need bake goods? They do not really seem like the pastry type.

Getting back to my book, did you happen to bring your copy. I tell people that they should never leave home without it, especially if they have the chance of running into Lizardfolk. It has a list of phrases that might come in handy like, 'Gooosssh dos, sssven.' Translated it means, 'where did i put the salted meat?' I would be happy to sign your copy..." The Gnome smiles at Thoreal's comment. "I dear say elvin man, that you are right about your account that the Elvin history suggests that Lizardfolk came from the 'Dark Lord.' However, if you go to the ancient temples and read the stone carvings you find that they believe they came from born from the sea alligator who ruled the oceans. Their God fell in love with this creature and from the alligators womb they were created. Calthoric can a test to this, am i right, you have read chapter 7 on Lizardfolk mythology, rituals, and beliefs. Anyways, back to your question, while was down in the south, i noticed that the trolls do not enter the temples but will walk right by them and i found this fascinating so i asked Elder Fffvesn, which translated is One whose eye burns red and who laps up the blood of his enemies. The interesting thing about his name is that the emphasis is on a single eye, which I postulate that is referring to the third eye or the unconscious voice or visions that he may see. Now red, being a color that is not commonly found in the swamp might refer to...." The gnome lectures on you find yourself spacing out on his discourses until some one coughs and it snaps him back. "Oh golly geez, i have done it again, i just so easily get off topic. Anyways, so it turns out that the lizardfolk use a protection spell on their temples to keep the trolls out while they worship. This also allows them to raise their young in a protected environment without having to worry about the trolls eating their babies, which they call Sevvvens....but Calthoric can fill you in on those. I have a whole chapter with pictures on the Lizardfolk prenatal development. So, i learned their spells, one that protects buildings and another that protects individuals. They work similar to spells like protection from evil. I am very disappointed that Calthoric did not tell you before heading here, he of course has read my book. My books specifies that the scrolls can be purchased at the Red Tower for a very low cost."

Calthoric listens to each as they put in the comments. "I thought your opinions of cohabitation a bit...eager. From my dealings with the lizard folk they have seldom had any interest in anything other then claiming anything they saw as theirs. As to attesting to anything you have written i can only attest to the fact it was in the book and it is your belief. I know not if it is truth or speculation. I do not carry your book with me and it has been a long while since i have read it. I am a bit foggy on some of the points but the key points I do remember. Do you have copies of these protection spells that you are willing to sell to us? As Master Thoreal has stated we had an unfortunate incident at the red tower so funds are in little supply but we may have items to trade. You also seem a fellow who knows these swamps well if you can supply us with a map of a safe passage through the swamp would be advantageous for our immediate need as well as for our future trade route." Calthoric looks to the stew once again but cannot get past the way it looks. Stammering a bit and scratching his head he looks to the gnome.

"Master BibbleVop I would prefer the fish and bread if it is not too much trouble as my stomach is a bit too weak to try an exotic food at the moment." Finding a comfortable place to sit in the crowded hut, Calthoric once again looks around the small building. "You have an impressive collection of wares here. This place is not easiest to reach where do you obtain your provisions from?"

Taking the bread Calthoric makes a sandwich with the fish and takes a bite nodding its tastiness to the gnome. After finishing his swallow of food he wipes the corners of his mouth and continues. "I am not sure how much I am currently willing to trust a guide, especially one that is a lizard folk. Being from the northern territories you can understand my trepidation. I am not closed minded enough to not listen to advice. I am curious, however, if the southern tribes are as you say they are, whey do they need to polymorph to enter local towns?" His stomach rumbling slightly Calthoric places his hand over his stomach. "Forgive me, I did mention my stomach was not up to the task of food this day. I need to use the privy. They are willing to take you to the town for a small price. They need someone in town disposed of, a man who has been paying for the heads of lizardfolk. A mild expression of surprise and suspicion draped across his face eying the two lizard folk. Moving to Thoreal he hands the wand to him "I found this jutting up from the bog while outside, it looked important. Exactly what did I miss?

"Professor BibbleVop that is hardly a proper request especially with the only compensation being a guided tour from the swamps. You rest for the night, you sleep well even through you can hear the patter of rain on the huts roof. The morning greets you feeling refreshed and ready for the day. The gnome has a large breakfast ready for you of wonderful tasting bread, fish, eggs, and wine. The food is divine and you wonder how a little man in the middle of nowhere can get food to taste this wonderful. It kind of makes you wish that you had tasted the stew last night. The gnome addresses you as you get ready to leave, "So, what is your plan? Are you going to head to the town with a guide, without a guide or to the lizardfolk city?"

"Tis a very good question you pose indeed good gnome. I for one, say we continue with the original plan. Head into town, after appriopriate morning preparations of course... The guides would be most welcome, but it is not my call... i leave it to the group" Bowing humbly thorael motions to his companions.

The gnome speaks to the lizardfolk, "Gaven amsen anfeka knalkens kaneknaflen vaeknem". They then turn to you and say, "Seens, esnemmk aneakmea meeeknaem deenmeken." The gnome translates as they speak, ""I with lead you to the town, i ask nothing in return except that if you find this man to be worthy of death for the deeds he has committed then you will punish him."

You pack up your stuff after you morning rituals and head off into the swamp once again the good gnome waving good by as you walk away. However, at first you are hesitant in the leadership of your guides. However, within a few hours and after not seeing a single troll you come out of the swamp and you see a small town surrounded by a wooden wall. The ground is soggy as you march onward, your guides have quietly slipped back into the swamp before you could even thank them. As you get close to the town you see the heads of lizardmen placed upon spikes leading up to the town. TO the east you can see a small docks outside of the town gates, about a fourth of a mile walk. There are no ships at the docks. Two guards barely notice you as their eyes dart from their card game to your faces as you enter the town. The town is run down, many buildings are in shambles and the smell of stale water, death, urine, and feces fill your nostrils. You see a few downward cast faces walking through the town. From your vantage point you gather that there are houses to the north and south of your present location. A general store lies to your immediate south, a bar to your north, a magic shoppe to the northeast, a warehouse to the southeast and what looks to be another bar and also a Inn to the east.

Thorael -

With Gilly in tow, you enter the magic shoppe, the old door creeks open and a human wizard looks up from several vials he has been combining. "What do you want mate? We are about to close." The room is filled with books, scrolls, and clutter. There is a weapon rack on one wall and papers clutter the floor.

Calthoric -

The first store you see is the general store. You enter and a attractive but burly woman looks up from tattooing herself on the forearm. "What can i do for you sweetie?" She asks with a smile

"Closing time... oh bother. Nothing that cannot wait until the morning. I wanted to resupply my component pouches and see what the goings on here were. I couldnt help but notice your... festive decorations as i entered town. You see i was beset by Bandits, my main spell books stolen, and i was left with naught but my spare book and a few crumbs of regent. But there i go... i'll keep you here all night if you don't stop me now. Intelligent conversation is something I have been long without..."

Thorael -

"I am sorry, I thought that you were one of the livestock that calls themselves men. I am always up for some intelligent conversation, would you like some tea? I notice that you are not in your red robes, are you not a member of the order? It really does not matter in this god forsaken hell hole, I would take any intelligent wizard over the ramble that lives in this town. Since Professor BibbleVop left, things have been vastly boring. Dam order assignments. Anyways, I would be happy to sell you spells and components at the same price that you would get them in Nesmee. No use gouging a fellow wizard. Is there something that you are looking for in this town? It is not easy to find and I am guessing you did not come by ship for not a ship has come into port in several days, I am expecting a shipment so I have kept careful watch."

He opens the door and flips the sign to closed and then moves two chairs closer to the fire, he pours you a cup of tea and takes out a platter of cookies and motions for you to sit down.

You can buy spells/components for phb prices.

"Stretching out by a fire... a spectacular idea." Thorael, takes one of the chairs, and removes his left boot. Pouring a bit of water out on the ground, he wriggles his toes before the flame. Catching Gillys eye, the mage give his apprentice the look which indicates, look out for trouble and fetch the others if it arrives. Stretching his arms high above his head, he interlocks his fingers as he brings his head to rest in his cupped hands. With a lean to the left, and then to the right an audible pop breaks the silence as the mages back rights itself with a satisfied sigh. Reaching down to pour the tea for himself and his host, he looks over his host as he takes a cookie. "...Although you cannot tell, these robes are a shade of red, although not of your orders. Weeks in the swamp will do that to them. I actually sought entry into the Order, but things were amiss in the Tower. There were several attempted robberies in the course of a day, and... well needless to say, the admissions department was quite busy. Had not one of my companions run afoul of one of the noble houses, and cut our visit short, i may very well be one of your brothers today"

Thorael -
You and the magic shopkeeper talk for hours on everything from the new theories of magic to current events, mostly the events of nesmee. The conversation seems to be steered clear away from this town. The hours seem to fly by, you gage the time to be well after midnight. You look back to Gilly who is slumped by the door sleeping. The mage smiles at your sleeping companion and says, "They sure do not make apprentices like they used to..." He gets up and grabs a piece of paper and makes a few scribbles on it and then places it in an envelope sealing it with some wax and his signet ring. He smiles as he hands you the envelope "When you go to inquire about joining, present this letter of recommendation, I am sure that your application will pass through much quicker. I have a few friends in admissions."

Ayrynthyn

Thorael takes the letter a smile and a nod. Glancing back at Gilly the mage yawns. "...aaaawwwgh. It's getting late, and i thank you for your hospitality. I'll return in the daylight, and we can conduct some actual business. See if i cant put a few coins into that till of yours" Putting his boots back on, the wizard stands, a walks over to Gilly. With a prod of his boot and a wink of his eye, he rouses the apprentice. Gilly knew his job well, and was exceptional at it. "...again, my thanks." Turning to the door, and then back to the shopkeeper. "Oh, before i go... what is with the Pikes and the uh... well... the 'walkway' into town here. Can't imagine decorations of that sort help out with the tourism and trade."

crimson77

Thorael -

The wizard shakes his head, "Nothing here is geared towards tourism or trade. This is a place where people come to disappear for a while. One of those who wished to disappear is a merchant from Nesmee. His name escapes me at the moment, however, he is using his money to eradicate the lizardmen who live in the swamp. I believe that he has actually found a buyer who is interested in their skins. He pays quite well, from what i have heard, but that is really only hearsay. If i were you, i would steer clear of him. Professor BibbleVop had a run in with him and he was killed. So be wary of the trouble that you stir up in town. This town is not Nesmee, you will have no guards keeping trouble off of your back. I would have some offensive spells ready."

Party -

You enter the inn, it is a grimy building that smells like body odor. A dirty woman stands behind a desk. She smiles a toothless grin as you enter. "You looking for a bed, we be the only Inn in town. We have single beds but no single rooms. The cost is 5 silver a night. 1 gold if you want clean sheets." She grins as she looks you over.

Looking around outside of the inn door [ OOC: Pending Korlarth's response ], Rasellia tries to discern where the shadier part of town is... which could very well be a difficult task, given the town's default level of seediness.

Wrinkling up her nose as she sniffs, she stretches, straying southward, chanting a cautious protective spell around herself before she slips down an alleyway.

You wonder down the alley way, you see small houses which also might double for questionable businesses. You feel very uncomfortable with the high level of seediness this town has to offer

Rasellia -

As you walk down the street you cannot help but feel out of place. You, in your priestly garments, seem to stick out like a sour thumb. Walking around you feel as if people are watching you and monitoring your every move. You see several deals going down in the alleys, what they are selling you have no idea, there are call girls also walking the alleys flashing their goods. Even walking in the shady parts of Nesmee you never saw this outward display of immoral activities.

Korlarth pokes at the bed, trying to chase out whatever decided to make it's home there. After watching a few small animals scurry off, he lifts to sheets to make sure nothing dangerous has decided to call the bed it's home. He rolls out his bedroll atop the muddy sheets and tests out the bed. He had slept in worse spots he supposed. Once satisfied that the bed would pass muster, he heads back out into the bar area and finds an unoccupied table. Sitting down, he orders a drink and listens to the murmurs of the crowd.

Korlarth -

You walk into the bar, it is a seedy place, one table is surrounded by burly men and one man whom they all seem to be laughing at his jokes. This man is dressed in a more elegant fashion. Beyond this party of folks, there are a few barmaids cleaning up tables and a dwarf in platemail sitting at the bar. He looks at you when you enter and then back to his pitcher of beer that he is drinking from. One of his eyes is covered with an eye patch, a scar runs across his face and he looks like he has seen death several times and lived to tell the tales.

Rasellia -

Continuing your walk back towards the inn a man walks closely by you (w29).

Sighing in disappointment, Rasellia heads back to the inn, not making much of the strange man who brushed by her. Despite all the seediness of this place, there wasn't anyone being wronged, from what she could tell, and deemed it unwise to trot around hollering at drug dealers and prostitutes.

Upon arriving at the inn, she gives a shrug to Korlarth, her search turning up nothing. Walking up to the innkeeper, she greets her politely. "Greeting, Madam. I'd like a room with as clean sheets as you can manage... A gold piece you said the price was?" She roots around for her coin pouch, a troubled look going over her face as she fails to find it. "H... huh... hold that thought..." Where did I lose it... in the swamp? No, I checked before I came into town how much money I had... must have been one of those lowl- She stops herself. "It was him!! That bastard!" Turning around, she storms out the door, eyes flaring and teeth grinding.

Try as you might, you cannot remember his face, you do not even think that you saw it as he narrowly pass along side of you. Thinking back, there were many people who passed closely to you while you were in the alleys, you are not even sure who might have taken your coin purse

You realize that you know Dale. He was a fence you used to pawn off good on. He was a fair man, as far a thieves go, always willing to take what ever goods you managed to acquire and passing it off under city officials noses.

You enter the bar, it is empty except for a lone dwarf drinking a pitcher of ale, several barmaids cleaning and a table of men. The table of men looks up at you as you enter. "Cal, is that really you?" asks the well dressed man at the table full of men. "What have you been up to? I am guessing it is good business. Is the fuzz coming down on you and you came here to get out of the heat? You still working out of Nesmee? Our city is the perfect place to let people forget who you are. Grow a beard and long hair. You pull any good jobs? You remember that Inn we scammed, tell my men here the story, they never believe me."

Calthoric's eyes widen at the sight of Dale, not expecting him to be the one he originally planned gathering the bounty on. "Dale!!, you salty dog of spittoon ridden filth." Calthoric leads Thoreal by the sleeve of his garment over to the table of men. Letting out a chorttle of a laugh he looks to Dale then the table of men. "By the gods man, I have not thought about that night since it's happenings. There I was covered in slime from head to toe, I had just crawled out of the sewer....literally, and this barmaid slash owner holding her nose comes up to me asking if I was lost. So I says to her 'you daft wench, no I'm not lost I am one of the bank clerks that came to place foreclosure on this establishment for not paying your taxes and i was robbed on my way here and thrown into the sewer.' Her eyes grew as big as deep sea pearls. She starts clammering to me how she paid her taxes and whatever. So I tells her 'look, it was never received and by what has happened to me, being covered in slime and my story of being robbed, the same thing probably happened to your monies. But since I am feeling in such a humiliated mood I want a room and pay only half your taxes and I will clear the matter for ya. Can ya believe that dumb wench gave me a room and 45 gold pieces to boot." Calthoric slaps his hands on the table laughing almost to tears. "Now which of you sod's are going to buy me a drink? And none of that cheap swill they serve on merchant vessels neither. I need one for my friend Throeal here as well. Thoreal, meet dale and the vise verse."

Calthoric looks to Dale with a more serious look "Tell me old friend what is this business about lizard folk that you have been paying people for their heads? I hope your not making a stew of it. It would most foul thing ever devised. Ya know they are trying to get peoples to kill ya? Lucky for you the price wasn't high enough." The men let out a laugh at the story, but then as business turns to the bounty Dale's eyes narrow as he motions for his men to move back and let you have a seat at the table. A barmaid brings you two fine bottles of wine and sets them before you, gold foil lines the tops of the bottles. "WHAT IS THIS ABOUT A BOUNTY ON ME? I have been holding a bounty on the lizardmen because I have a buyer who will pay top dollar for hides. He is making cloaks out of the skins. They are wonderful, keep you dry in any conditions. There was that Bibblevoppy fool that my men killed, that is the last of the bounty that i heard on my head. Where did you hear this news? This unfinished business reminds me of our unfinished business." He takes a dagger out from his side and slides it along the table towards Calthoric. It is a very fine looking dagger with ornate gems in the hilt and blade. "I believe that I still owe you 500 from the shrine job we last pulled. I do not believe that we have seen each other since. That dagger is well worth over 500, well, you might not get that much here, but it will fetch over 500 in Nesmee. I think that makes us even."

Calthoric - The shrine job was a job that Dale and you pulled to help get him out of debt with the wrong people. It turned out to be a series of bad luck that sent the team running in various directions. You have not seen him since this job, almost 3 years ago. He owed you a tenth of the cut from the job, but it was rumored that he got caught.

Trying as hard as she can to try and retrace her steps, or more specifically, her money-imbued steps, she drums her fingers across the top of the table, only half-heartedly listening to Calthoric's story of swindling the poor innkeep. She makes a mental note to chastise him for it later, despite how little it would accomplish. Though without any funds, she determines it would be foolish to alienate her team mates even more.
