New comic is up. I think I managed to swing back as far in the other direction from #417 as possible...

Love the Star Wars reference. The art is very nicely done in this one too. Great job!

Might as well put this here; If some of you don't get the punchline then read this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_entendre).

Having just recently discovered the musical Spring Awakening, I can't help but think that the only way to improve this strip is to set it to a song from the show...

"My Junk".

Allow me:

junk: (1) a flat-bottomed sailing boat, popular in Chinese waters, that is high at the stern and has squarish sails, each supported on several battens

(2 [colloq.]) how can I put this delicately? The male's distinguishing parts. Yeah, that's it.

Eh... It was ok. I dunno, I guess its a good change up. That is one of the real powers of this strip - it does fluctuate to enough different sorts of humor. Like they say about Minnesota: If you don't like the weather, wait a minute. It'll change...

That was beautiful. I was laughing from "This is your junk" on.

I can't help but notice that just because Hinjo's "Southern" and Roy's dark, Roy severely underestimates the size of Hinjo's boat. Way to go against the, erm, seafaring stereotypes there, Giant.

Could someone explain the strip for me like I were an Idiot? Please? Pretty Please?

It's a subtle yet effective way of illustrating that Hinjo is a much, much different ruler than Shojo in many aspects. Anything else is just reading too much into it.

Could someone explain the strip for me like I were an Idiot? Please? Pretty Please?

*ahem*

The premise of the strip is a pun, laden with sexual innuendo. It centers around the word "junk," which is the name of a type of boat of Asian origin, but is also a slang term for the male genitalia. Likewise, "package" is a slang term for the male genitalia, in addition to its more inocuous definition. This explains Belkar's statement (paraphrasing one of Obi-Wan Kenobi's lines in Star Wars: A New Hope) about double entendres (which are, simply put, sexual puns; phrases with multiple layers of meaning).

I hope that helps.

You're right, at first I thought he meant junk as in trash. Then I remembered those boats were called 'juncos' in spanish, so I figured it was a play of words. Moderately funny until the last two panels made it obvious it could mean something entirely different. A quick search online reveals that yes, junk can be used as slang for that, but by the time I was done, the joke was somewhat dead. Had I known from the beginning and I would've been rolling. :(

Xi-1
2007-02-23, 11:47 PM
Glad someone else also spotted the 'this one this one' typo. I just kept laughing from the multiple uses of 'junk' and then 'package,' somewhat because they all had straight faces on. And Belkar had to complete the circle because there's not only the prescendent of the Trouser Titan, but also Belkar's shots against Roy when he was a woman. Ah, the return of the sexual innuendo.

What was the package?

Rock the casbah? The castle? Because that's where that expression comes from -- an invading force ramming the gates of a walled city, fortress, etc and thus 'rocking' the castle until it falls apart. Much easier to do with some explosive plastique, I know.

Definately a funny comic, if a bit corny.

However, I would like to note that atleast now i'm certain of Belkars current fate. He's locked up behind bars, which means he probably won't get to kick some zombie/hobgobbie butt in the upcoming battle (I dont imagine they'd lock him up just to unlock him for the battle.)

Perhaps the nobles of Azure City went with the lowest bidder, who then sent ninjas-in-training to do the job on the cheap. Which meant Roy was probably mopping up the floor with 2nd-or-3rd level ninja who'd been told a young, trusting, straight-arrow paladin would be an easy target. :smallyuk:

Ever notice that the guys who evaluate targets are never the ones who have to go deal with 'em? :smallfurious:

I personally thought this strip was funny, although I can see how others wouldn't either because they don't like innuendo, don't like sexual references, or just dont think the jokes are funny.

I think there have been a lot funnier and more clever strips, but I do admire how Rich is able to use so many different forms of humor over the various strips.

Now what will Hinjo do with all that Junk?

Probably get, get, get, get you drunk!

I was so waiting for him to do a remark on that, but I guess Rich just doesn't listen to the same music. :smallfrown:

If Hinjo inherited his junk from his uncle, one must ask if he was really his uncle.

Not really. First off what you ask implies incest, and as much as Rich likes to tease on some (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0382.html) topics (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0237.html), I don't think he'll touch that one with the obligatory ten-foot pole.

As Shinjo's only living male heir, even as a nephew, Hinjo stands to inheret more than just Shinjo's crown, by default he also inherets Shinjo's estate, unless Shinjo's will bequeaths it to someone else. So getting the junk is hardly worth raising an eyebrow at.

hmmm. while people may have mentioned this before, "this one this one" seems to have become simply "this one this". or maybe it was always "this on this" , the giant never fixed it, and the people i've read were themselves mistaken.

The social pages say I've got

And they're such big balls
Dirty big balls
And he's got big balls
And she's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all

And my balls are always bouncing
My balls are always full
And everybody comes and comes again
If your name is on the guest list
No one can take you higher
Everybody says I've got
Great balls of fire

CHORUS

Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure
They're the balls that I like best
My balls are always bouncing
To the left and to the right
It's my belief that my big balls
Should be held every night

CHORUS

And I'm just itching to tell you about them
Oh we had such wonderful fun
Seafood cocktail, crabs, crayfish...

Wow, I just read through all six pages of posts.
That's what you get for living in Europe.

Seeing the title of the comic, I realised there had to be another meaning to the word Junk too. After the third panel I realised it had to be a sexual explanation. It is doable to understand the innuendo, but still a bit difficult for non-native english speakers.
Second, in the first pages people were talking about a typo saying: 'save this one this one Lord Hinjo'. I guess Rich made a mistake again while fixing it, because he only deleted the second 'one'.

I didn't really enjoy the double entendres, but that is just me. It's just not my kind of humor. But I did laugh at Belkars joke at the end.
Got to love star wars references :-D
I did like the comic, but solely because of Belkars comment.
417 was much better in my opinion.

Last I want to comment on what a few people mentioned before and I fully agree with them. Shojo didn't want people on his ship for a reason. There are going to be a lot of problems when they just load people on board without checking the contents of the ship first.

Actually, this is the first time I've ever heard the word used in this manner and I've lived here all my life. OTOH, I figured out how it was being used by the third repetition so it's not like the reference was completely obscure for a native speaker of American English.
I'm from Ireland and have lived here all my life (not including holidays to other countries, which have never been more than two weeks - and, I hasten to add, have only included one excursion to North America, namely Toronto in Canada), and I have never heard "junk" used as slang like this before. Sure, it came up in "My Humps" by the Black Eyed Peas, but that seemed to be a reference to female curves, not male... beards. :smallwink: Thus, when I read the strip first, it seemed like the unfunniest thing ever. However, I was a little suspicious given the mention of the length and width of the, er, boat, so I came onto the forums to find my answer. I read it again twice after, and now it's hilarious. Oddly, the line that puts the biggest grin on my face is Hinjo's "my junk appears to be quite long" - the 'appears' seeming to imply he's never looked at it before. However, Lien's "That could take some time, Lord Hinjo" and the second-last frame re. the package (which just put the cherry on the cake by starting a new double entendre) also deserve an honourable mention.

Man, I read this comic about 4 times until I understood it. If it weren't for this forum with a thread to each comic where the jokes (and Haleys gibberish etc.) would be explained all on page 1 I would have missed that joke.

At first I thought the Giant switched from yacht to junk because junk itsself has two meanings so I didn't get that it was actually a triple entendre for about 10 Minutes (two meanings for the innocent kids and the hidden third for the adults, right?^^).

And here I thought that I was a pretty firm non-native english speaker. :smallfrown: (I'm German)

I'd have found it funny in the same way I find the line "Invader's blood marches through me like giant radioactive rubber pants! The pants command me! Do not ignore my veins!" (that's from Invader Zim, btw) funny. I'm a fan of non-sequitors. I thought it was funny this way for the sheer "My GOD how long can they keep this going? Hehee...long..."

But I liked the last one too, I didn't get a chance to chime in then though as I was busy. I though the last one was good, with a nice message at the end. I thought this one was reminiscent of a Three's Company episode, all that was missing was Don Knotts making incredulous faces at all the innuendo. So long story short, I liked it also.

My point is there is room in the series for both kinds of comics

I found this one hilarious. I also think it is high humour, right from the title: the joke is on the author. It's breaking the fourth wall. This is the class of jokes that are so bad they're good: that the laugh you get is a laugh at yourself, becuase by finding the 'junk' even a little funny, you have become ridiculous. Hence the total non-sequiteur in the 'package' panel.

That made no sense. My point is, I vote for "awesome".

Oh, and I'm English but I thought "junk puns" as soon as I saw the title. I have rather specific ideas about when the term junk is appropriate, too. Having said that, it's heard to avoid American culture, especially when you are as internetdicted as I am. Plus, I have an awful memory, so I have no idea if I picked up the phrase from some specific American source.

Quoted for truth.
Sigh... Waiting for more plot.

Yes it was. Making a joke where lots of people dont immediately see the hidden innuendo on penises by using a triple entendre IS highlevel (you can always tell your children that the double entendre is referring to garbage).

penis penis penis penis doesnt have this quality as you might have noticed.:smalltongue:

penis, penis, penis. No that isn't funny at all. And frankly I only thought it was funny because of the sudden change from Junk to package followed by Belkars genius starwars reference.

Afterwards I can appreciate the triple meaning of the word, so that there is a double entendre for both kids and grown ups.

If you want an example of a great joke consisting of one word being repeated, check this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0314.html).

I guess they were only there for the one punchline.
The rest happened off screen. After all, the FAQ states that:

Q: Hey, in Panel X, the character is doing Y, but in Panel X+1, the character is doing Z. What happened?

A: Between panels, the character moved/cast a spell/had a spell cast on him/etc. There are limited panels in each strip, and I give priority to panels that tell jokes first, then advance the plot, and then, only if I have extra room, do I show transitional panels that are not strictly necessary. Use your imagination when it comes to exactly how it happened.A wizard did it, or more precise, Roy killed them all.

It's good to see that although I'm late to the party, there are already several people "defending humor" and making sure that we all know the difference between "humor" and "funny". I wouldn't want to have to be the only person telling an entire readership what is and isn't funny, and does or doesn't belong in a comic.

Now where's my rather tall horse? I need to go prove how much better I am than someone.

Hilarious comic. :D

A bad pun used once is a groaner. A bad pun used over and over again is a classic. The dead horse is funnier with every kick.

Oh. My. God. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at a comic!

I snickered a little at 'this is you junk' and 'he forbade anyone from touching his junk' but I thought they were going to move on after that - but no, because Hinjo's junk will be for the people!

I usually read OotS at the college library so it's very rare that I literally 'LOL', but by the time everyone was going on about how long and wide Hinjo's junk was I was in stitches, and the chick that 'personally handled' Hinjo's package was the icing on the cake.

Nice that even with the plot going full steam ahead the Giant can still take the time for a pure joke strip - I wasn't expecting it but I sure did appreciate it!

Poor Belkar though, he missed the whole thing! Now he will never be able to mock Roy for admiring Hinjo's junk. :smallfrown:

I understood it and all, but to be honest, I think you lot would still have found it funny if it was just a single frame with belkar stood in his cell going "penis penis penis penis penis penis penis penis penis penis penis penis penis..."

Why yes, actually. In fact, I almost lost my coffee just reading your post.

Giant, I humbly request that Monday's strip be all about Hinjo's package. I mean, was that guardswoman able to handle it all by herself or was it large enough that she needed help? Who did Hinjo want to unwrap it? It is a mystery. This could be important.

I don't get it. Someone pointed out that there was a "this one this one" in the first panel. I didn't see that, but there is still a "this one this" in that panel.

Hmmm maybe Scruffy is now hiding on Hinjo's junk. I have to say the kids can't be sheltered from the third meaning as they'll also be reading these forums. Sigh I guess I come in on the innocent kid/sheltered person side of things because these things keep happening to me. I see something I don't understand and then someone explains it to me.

New comic is up. I think I managed to swing back as far in the other direction from #417 as possible...

What you have managed to accomplish is sheer genius. That's possibly the greatest concentration of funny ever packed into an OOTS strip. The only two that come to mind as being funnier are the strip where Elan casts an illusion on his puppet to turn it into Banjulhu, and the one where Belkar pushes Vaarsuvius into the open jaws of an Owlbear.

I applaud you. With my hands, my feet, and anything else that I have two of and can bang together.

Kids are not innocent. (Assuming there's a TV in their house and they go to school and don't live in a plastic bubble, that is.)

Seriously though, I think kids would be more likely to get the reference than adults would be. Honestly I never even heard the term 'junk' used that way until fairly recently, it's more of a pop culture thing. (same with the other definition, weird that the same word can mean both male, um, parts and also a woman's behind.)

Anyway, what I originally came here to post - Rich, I think it's time for you to fess up and admit that the last 217 strips and the whole Miko/Snarl/Azure City storyline was written soley for the purpose of getting the OotS into an Asian-inspired town just so you could make this joke.

And then after all that work you decided you might as well make it again...and again, and again and again and again because hey, it took a lot of effort to get to this point and you had to be sure to make the most of it. :smallwink:

Well I thought it was hilarious, but okay thanks for correcting me.

Giant, apparently your latest strip sucked. I'm sorry but the Laws of Humor (which written in stone and completely objective) are quite clear on this matter, and #418 just didn't measure up. There's no point in arguing or bringing personal opinion to it, it was just a bad strip. One joke repeated two dozen times can not make a good strip. It is impossible and anyone who thought otherwise is either lying to make you feel better or just ignorant of what humor really is. (Don't feel bad guys, I didn't realize it either until just now. Nah, it's the same principle that lets me say "His euphemism was sooo big, her euphemism was sore for days. And when she went to the euphemism, her euphemism was all squishy." Usually the mere fact of innuendo implies dirtiness; then it's all up to context.

Well I thought it was hilarious, but okay thanks for correcting me.

Did anyone else notice that some of the ships were facing the city? Shouldn't they be escaping, and therefore facing the ocean?

I get the impression that the flotilla is a temporary floating Refugee Camp; they're out of harm's way (i.e. catapult range). For now, they’re hanging out to see the outcome: if the city is sacked they start filing change-of-address forms and find another port; if the city repels the attack, they come home.

If a few of the captains have turned their ships to face the city in order to better watch the fireworks, why not?
I wouldn't be at all surprised if those were ships that harbored the Daimyos.

Dirty jokes aside, why do I get the feeling that Shojo didnt want anyone to board is yacht for a very good reason? Its probably just me but I get the feeling there is lots of 'unlawfull' things in that boat. Anyway, we didnt saw Roy fight against the Ninjas? I guess they were really weak after all, Roy doesnt even have a scratch.

Yeah, double entendre is not the most mature form of humor, but it IS funny. And I think Giant walked fine line with it. The trick to quality double entendre is to have conversation sound natural in its innocent meaning, and Giant did really well with it. Lines like Hinjo's "my junk will be for the people" sound perfectly normal and natural for Hinjo, as does the satisfaction with large size. Maybe panel 8 was a tiny little bit forced, but overall, a high quality example of lowbrow humor.

Just curious, people who didn't like it - do you have double entendre example you think works a lot better than this; or do you dislike that type of jokes to begin with?

Actually, Solara is quite right and my statements should be taken as coming from On High. I was, after all, deemed the Sole Arbiter of Humor by Thor himself in a ceremony involving endless mugs of ale that are in reality tied to the ocean and putting our hands in wolf mouths and seeing how long we can hold them there without them getting bit off (poor Tyr, though...I told him he shouldn't try it drunk). It was a highly publizied event, I don't know how you missed it.

Oh, wait...that didn't happen. So yeah...you probably should just take what I say as a typical forum post, filled with opinion.

Great One Giant!
Yeah. Belkar's psychic disapointment at the waste of all those 'package' joke opportunities just nailed it. And the dialogue worked as dialogue - essential to it working as innuendo.
I'm Australian; I think I heard 'junk' in this context on the internet.

That's too bad you think that way. It must keep you from laughing at a lot of stuff. Like Solara, I thought this was hilarious, but I stand corrected since you've pointed out the obvious rule of comedy that repetition is NOT FUNNY. Now that you mention it, you're completely right: no modern comedians have ever used repetition as a comedic device! Does George Carlin know about this? How about David Letterman? Johnny Carson's zombie?

Also, in unrelated news, there's a typo in the 2nd speech balloon. This has also probably been mentioned before, but just in case.

I present you with living proof that you can infact make a very simple joke 2 dozen times and not only does it a good strip make but one of the single most acclaimed moments in Tv. The Sideshow Bob rake scene.
