Yet you sport an award for first place in an IA contest. I'd consider that evidence to the contrary.

Oh, and very nice Dark Prince, Zanaril Taru. I like the transparent thingy.

Alarra, your style is ever unique and enchamnting. I especially like the leprechaun.

Well, I didn't get much response from the end of the first thread, so here's some of the same stuff, plus one additional thing I made for the military dress contest. From left to right: Magma mephit Arcane Trickster for Lankybugger, Professor Callan for me, Gnome reading Hume for AKAbait, Werewolf Dungeon Master for DM77 and a Giff Major for the military dress compo.

Nice work, ChimericPhase. Perhaps you can try to change the campfire's smoke a bit in the third panel, so that isn't exactly the same as in the first one.
Also, it seems strange that the last two panels are (partially) shaded, while the rest isn't.

maybe try to add some shading/texture to the bushes and the tree. They seem rather plain.

Okay, here's something I did with Microsoft Office, more specifically Powerpoint. It's a littler long.

http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/9752/rexpowerpointhm0.png

Rex's synopsis: It's not really made for this as you can tell, the one major problem I had was the Snapping, which was about an 8th of an inch, and prevented any detailed work, unless you want to go really large in size, as you can see I had to do. Other than that, every line or shape that I drew was reset to default size and color, which got really annoying, really fast. Lines were impossible to modify after drawn, so I had to delete a lot. It's color and texture formatting are one of it's few pluses over a very few other things, and the Autosphapes are good for cheep magic effects. Although possible, I didn't bother to use the frames to animate this one.

Overall, I give Powerpoint a 3.5/10, but hey, it's not really meant for this stuff is it? If you're bored and want to try it, or doodling on your school paper is probably the only time I'd suggest it. If you have this, you'll have MS paint or something better.

My avatar, and this is the larger version (slightly smaller than the size I made it at). I've sorted the face out in the large one, so it no longer needs to be a green glowy orb, but I'm too lazy to go into the small one, make the same changes, upload it and change the link in my profile.

And you've got that, um, wonderful hat on... Unless that hat contains a decanter of endless water, or possibly some very special rod of wonder that does whatever the owner wants, as long as their mind is utterly insane and able to produce random operations for it at will. I wouldn't put it past a madman to have tried both of those, and given the weird arcane thingammies in the normal Rex avatar, item creation doesn't seem too far off.

I know it isn't OOTS-style, but it could still do with thicker lines. Also, I think the guns are far too small. Apart from that, nice work!

Were-Sandwich
2007-04-01, 02:01 PM
Thanks. I thought the guns should be bigger too. The lines will probably be thicker in the comic, I'm still trying to get the style down. I'm doing the faces in a style similar to Julian Opie, using economy of line (a style Rich Burlew took to new levels). Art lessons come in handy some times.

Mysticaloctopus
2007-04-01, 02:27 PM
Nice! I agree that the lines should be a bit thicker, at least the outlines, and the guns are a bit small, but that's awesome! It reminds me a bit of Malcom Reynolds, and so it's instantly made of win. I've never had art lessons beyond the required ones at school, it's a nice subject but I suck at most art and you can't use any digital work as your final pieces - so it'd be no art grade for me if I took art, and I'd have to buy a laptop and carry it to school... So I have to rely on the internet to teach me stuff.

Don't expect any more art from me, I'm awful at drawing and art in general, even stick figures.
This one pic is a complete fluke and I didn't actualy draw the picture myself, it's basicaly just a friends display pic who asked me to simplify it from a photo of herself into something more 'computer-art'.
Sorta noticed as I was doing it that it sorta looked a bit like Sabine might as a 'real person' so thought 'why not' and went ahead and did a recolour to see how it'd look.

Pic I did for her with her real colouring (I think my awful portrayal of her nose offended her):

Looks like I got lazy with my current avi lol.

Sampi

Hair. Some tips:

One. Hair is not at the same level with the skull. If you draw a circle for a head, make the hair go up from said circle.

Two. Hair is not uniform. Add small bits of dangling hair, strands falling on the face and so forth - but don't go overboard.

Three. Hair reflects light funny. Look at people's hair. It tends to reflect in certain places, and not in others. This avatar is an example of a certain kind of reflection, a very typical one:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v443/Sampi/Avatars/maero3.gif
Note that the reflections are not uniform, nor a solid area of color.

Four. Shading hair is tricky.
If you shade, then make sure your hair is shaded by its form. Below is an example.

If you need more information, please consult with more specific questions.

Or you can cheat and just go for head-stubble, a la :belkar: or this little caveman I just whipped up:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s274/Mysticaloctopus/Caveman-Avvie.png
And I just noticed I forgot to make the outlines black. Whoops!

Sampi
2007-04-03, 02:01 PM
Aye. Looking at OOtS, I see three different hairstyles.

One is the stubble as seen on Belkar's head. Another is the ruffled style of, for exaple, Hinjo. The third is the longer, smooth style as evidenced by Haley or Elan. Strip 429 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0429.html) has good examples of all in the sixth panel (though a back view).

Note the first: Parts are common in the third style. These are evideced by a dip in the hair's silhouette in the part, and a line depicting the part in the hair.

Note the second: Stray hairs are also common. THese are lines of a medium thickness in the hair's color. Often seen on Elan's forehead.

Note the third: Black outlines for all (ecxepting stubble) is the OOtS norm. I personally tend to use the hair's own colour, but that's because I belong to the:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v443/Sampi/grandshadingcoalitionlodl6.png

AmberVael
2007-04-03, 02:47 PM
Shading doesn't require using the hair's own color for an outline, though it sometimes works better with certain people's styles.
The style I use when I shade an avatar certainly looks better with black outlines. Or at least I think it does.

Rex Idiotarum

Nice one for a first. For once the lines aren't too thin.

Except for the eyebrows, you can't really see them. Also, if you want headband, maybe you should put the eyes a bit lower. And maybe make them slightly bigger, too.

The palette could be clearer - use lighter colours for colouring, they tend to look better.

What programs are you using? I see the lines are not totally smooth, and I can give you hints as to that, depending on your tools.

It's taken me three days to get it to this stage. ^_^

I realise all the eyes are the same, all the female bodies are the same, and most of the male bodies are the same, and most of the female hair is also the same. Call it lazyness and lack of ability with creating hair. :smallwink:

It is, however, still unfinished. I'll have to put it in spoiler tags soon.

Good try. You've got to make sure you shade it correctly from which ever direction the light is coming from. Threw it into Inkscape for a second to give you an example, the light source being the glow. I made it a little bigger so you can see where I put it.

luneix, not to be presumptuous, but try lightening up the shadow at the bottom (atleast, I THINK it's a shadow). Took me like five minutes trying to figure out why he ended in an egg. Also, make it shadow-shaped. I'm going to assume that the head's oval shape and lack of outline are your style, but I think it'd look better with an outline. Same goes for other objects. I think the arms would look better if higher up on the body.

And here's something I made for Innis Cabal:

Ooh, I like! Part of the appeal is that it resembles my personal favourite character from anything ever, Black Mage evilwizardington with the yellow eyes, blue theme, evil grin and large knife.

I was just listening to a load of random things I have and for some reason, winamp took "random" as "Only play Bjork for an hour", so I decided to do this:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s274/Mysticaloctopus/Bjork-Av.png
Bjork, in that legendary swan dress - it's the only way I could really make an avatar specifically Bjork (apart from the rather weird Homogenic cover), but sadly the swan head is kinda hard to make out at avvie scale. I just made this on a whim, and don't intend to use it myself, so it's going in my the now slightly larger pile of "up for grabs" avvies.

This next one I made but then forgot to post in the showcase thread.

I noticed though the boots arent same height but thats easy to fix. What's really bugging me, is that the eyes are i think still too big and the lines are yet not thin enough.

Can anybody give me a clue how i can thicken the lines (one way would be push the anchor points together and then scale the whole thing up but maybe there is a function that makes the whole thing easier)?

Anyway i think im gonna call him Guy Redblade

Great, for a first try!

Firstly, little big. Try drawing in a 117x117px/pt box. ^_~

Second, lines. From the Object menu>Fill and Stroke>Stroke Style tab on the far right>2px/pt lines are standard for a 117x117 avatar.

The sizes are intentional its just how i placed them. the smaller shoe is a little lower than the big one.

I made just another one this time i made it in 117x117, i also rounded the line ends and this time the lines are better.

Both made in ten minutes flat, because I was bored

Mr Shine!

I've been meaning to do him, but was unsure about what colours to use. Nice!

My newest concept for a fighter character with a deserty nomad-style. I might draw him too.

Woo. Great respect, Dr. Bath. Maybe add the partrician? That would be awesome!

Agreed, First Doihaveaname and now Dr. Bath bring out amazing group-shots.
I have to say I also love that new one of Threeshades'. To me, desert nomad means one thing and one thing only - He Is the Kwisatz Haderach!

That banner is enough grounds for anybody not to vote for you. I mean, everyone can see you, clear as day!

Ah, but that is what you think. In fact, what you can see is a clever guise of Vael. In fact, he is NOT where that banner is. The banner is on your screen, Vael is in Georgia. Therefore, he has nijariffically fooled your perception of where he is!

Ye gods! He has fooled my senses with his ninja illusion trickery!

Actually, no matter where you look, I've got you. Because if you look at my banner, my avatar will get you while you're distracted.
Even if you look at my avatar and my banner at once, I'm still hidden in my spoiler as well.

But what if they disable signatures and avatar images?

AmberVael

...then I'll just be even MORE hidden, now won't I?

Flabbicus

... But the whole point of what you just said was that you always have a ninja picture ready to stab someone when they're distracted. Ergo, no sig equals no ninja image.

Anyways, nice avatars Threeshades!
