The Tiefling woman's eyebrow arches as Xander starts to attack the door. She's still not entirely convinced of the sanity of her group mates, and this certainly doesn't build confidence. Watching Julius drop a platinum in the slot, she cracks a smile and whistles.

"Big spender. I'm surprised you didn't start with coppers."

Ranssyn eyes widen slightly as he catches the tail end of the shady caster freaking out and blasting the heck out of the door. An amused smirk spreads across Ranssyn's face, as Julius starts shouting at the crazed Xander. When he sees Julius put a platinum into the slot his smirk shifts to a slight grimace and Is about to say some sarcastic comment, but he can't think of something fast enough before Gudrun beats him to the punch in making a comment on Julius's big coin drop. So instead he just ends up grumbling semi under his breath which is still loud enough for most people to hear due to his loud voice.

"I hope whatever is behind the door is worth it. With our luck it will just be a mop closet used for cleaning up demon crap. "

Did Ranssyn (or anyone else)see Julius get a sack of coin for the traded parts or was he by himself?

Julius wasn't very secretive about getting the 100gp, so presumably everyone knows he did.


The door with a face narrows its eyes and completely resists Xander's eldritch blasts, completely unaffected. Jeffery, Julius, and Gudrun recognize that the door is resisting because it is immune to magic, not because of hardness or anything (although it's got that in spades too).


Meanwhile, Julius puts a platinum in the coin slot of the other southeast door, and it slides smoothly open with a ding. Beyond, Melikki growls at a hulking round shape floating in the middle of the room. Also in the room: crates, what appears to be a well, a vast miscellany of goods and art objects lying in heaps.

Everyone has heard of beholders, but Xander is the one who knows some specifics, like they shoot doombeams from all their eyestalks and also a cone of antimagic from their central eye. Xander identifies this as a true beholder, not one of the many lesser variants.

This one notices the Julius peering through the ajar door, and loudly gibbers out something in Undercommon. When Julius does not comprehend, it repeats, in Common, "HELLO FOR HI! I HAVE WARES IF YOU HAVE COIN?" The beholder is surrounded by crates and heaps of a dazzling miscellany of mostly mundane goods and art objects.

Julius just stands there frozen for a second. Staring at the beholder. More seconds pass.

Then finally, after about ten or fifteen seconds, he talks, "Are you... a... merchant?"

Actually I had meant to try and open the southeastern most door, in the room with the acid pool and the pit; I can't read the map well on mobile. But it's okay, we'll roll with it. Hopefully I don't die. I guess nobody wants to try a healing check to see if we can avoid the secondary poison effects? :p

Xander makes a rude gesture towards the door and moves to follow Julian. His eyes widen at the sight of the beholder but then he realizes it isn't exactly hostile.

"Do you have a journeyman's key?" Xander asked.

Gudrun's eyes go wide in surprise and she can't help but choke up on her sword. Doing some quick mental math, she realizes that if this thing was hostile, she'd already be dead. Swallowing her unease at the sight of a beholder, she sheathes her sword and takes a deep breath. Nodding back towards the door, she tries to chat up the beholder in as friendly a tone as she can muster:

"Would it still have opened for just a copper piece?"

Ranssyn is unsure how to react at first when seeing the large monstrous floating spherical eye. He tightens his grip on Melinda and watches the other more knowledgeable party members react first. Once he sees them not taking a hostile approach and hears them striking up a parley, he approaches closer to the beholder and tries to inspect the beholder's goods. He gets close enough to get some detail but far enough away to not be too close.

"So uh...big peeper, You got yourself a name?"

Sorry Thundercracker, Ranssyn would probably not go out of his way to do a heal check on (arcane user) Xander. Although he might (but might not )do so if Xander directly asked him For help.

At the sight of the beholder, Jeffery whimpers a bit, having never seen that many eyes on anything before in his life. Unsure what to do about it, he follows everyone else's lead.

Melikki plum refuses to enter the room with the beholder.

The beholder responds to Julius: "Oh, yes, much many sellings!"

It contemplates Ranssyn with a bit of surprise -- apparently people don't often ask its name: "I am they call me Xinosh!"

To Gudrun's question, "I think not copper no, but pretty sure silver does it."

He ponderclates Xander's question, rooting through his stores with telekinesis, "Very good question. Rare. I have many and more mundane goods, many magic goods, but journeyman's key?" At least Xinosh recognizes the idea, so maybe he has one, or knows where one might be found. Eventually: "No, I have not one. BUT! I am knowing where one might maybe is be! Area ten!" The creature grins broadly, as if this is meant to mean something to the party.

When prompted for clarification: "You just have to go through nineteen and eighteen, is all. Almost there! Oh, oh, there's one in thirty-four, too!"

When prompted more, Xinosh heaves a mighty sigh and points with several eyestalks to the north door of his room. "That way, then west some. Beware the tentacle thingum. Safer might be thirty-four, southways of here a couple rooms."

At Gudrun's tone, Xinosh begins to rotate on his main-eyeball axis, tipping over in an approximation of a canting of the head. And then as he speaks he continues to rotate until he is upside-down, and then continues to rotate until he's right-side-up again. "Oh, yes yes, the grell from the northwest and the myconids from the northeast and the demons from the southeast all come to me for wares! And a very pleasant group of adventurers came through just the other day. Always with the business, though! Never usually with the personal questions."

Meanwhile, he takes Xander's 100gp and telekinesises a rough map and some colored inks from his supplies. He splashes green ink in two places and red ink in one place. "You want green, journeyman's keys there and there. Avoid red, tremendous tentacle monster is red."

The tiefling gives a mirthful laugh at the beholder's antics...perhaps the first genuine laugh you've heard from her. She shakes her head and can't help but continue to smile.

"Can you mark on this map where each key leads? At the very least we'll take a key to the closets portal to here."

Xinosh the beholder brings forth two slender ancient metal rods, cylinders about a foot long by an inch in diameter, one marked with the old dwarven rune for "5" and the other with the old dwarven rune for "8". But then he coughs with slight embarrassment, "I, uh, don't actually exactly know which arch corresponds to which keys. Only knowings there's a bunch of them -- at least eight, yes? yes! -- and the workings of the keys: just hold aloft as you enter the arch and to a non-random destination you go!"

"One of the keys is right around the corner." Julius quips after looking at the map

"Not sure if we really need to be teleportin' around down here." Julius says in response to the keys, "But it's nice to know it's not a hot trip to the plane'o'fire. Not sure what kind of sick monster would make somethin' like that though...." With that last statement he gives Ranssyn a look. No "in-game" reason for this look. It's as if, in another world, at another time, some sick DM actually did do this. And perhaps, that DM is currently playing Ranssyn.

He grins at that before scrunching up his face thoughtfully, "Is the tentacled monster an undead tentacle monster? Think that's a bounty too."

Gudrun eyes the keys and thinks for a moment. "Xinosh, let's strike an accord. You could sell those keys for a higher price if you knew their precise locations. I'll buy those keys now if you agree to buy them back at a higher price once we've mapped them. Same goes for any new keys we find along the way. Deal?"

Xinosh bobs in the air, "Oh, yes, very undeads with the tentacles, much terrible!"

He ponders Gudrun's proposal. "Hm, yes, sellable at much price if knowings are had. Sell you two now 50 golds each, buy them with knowledges for 75 golds each, sell them with knowledges for 100 golds each!" Not a huge profit margin. Gudrun attempts to talk him up to a bit of a better price, but manages to roll a 0 and he "pfft"s at her; it seems a 75gp buyback is as high as he'll go.

Ranssyn briefly listens in as the others chat, but he seems to spend more of his focus on casually walking around the room and looking through Xinosh's wares for anything that he might find useful or if not useful then at least something interesting, cool, or exotic.
In an almost scopaesthesia moment, Ranssyn stops his perusing of wares and looks up to catch Julius giving him a look. Ranssyn misinterprets the look as a nonverbal cue for him to stop messing around with shopping and pay more attention to the conversation. Ranssyn gives a grunted mutter
"Fine" and walks back near the group to pay more regard to what is being discussed.

Ranssyn eyes widen slightly when hears Xinosh confirm that the tenacled creature is undead. To avoid any further discussion of it, since Julius's mentioned he thought there was a bounty on the undead tenacle monster, he quickly follows Xanders comment with his own rushed utterance "Good call Xander, Lets get a move on and collect what we came here for. Well, Good meeting you Xinosh, nice shop you got here. We'll be seeing you real soon."

Xinosh has for sale pretty much all mundane goods from the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/goodsAndServices.htm), plus a seemingly random variety of magical goods.

"Alright, let's go grab the closest key to us. Right over here." Julius says and moves to the southwest door in the room. After taking 20 searching it for traps he opens it and then moves to the next broken or ajar door and takes 20 searching that one too.

Julius checks the ajar double door for traps, finds no traps, heads into the hallway, checks the next ajar door for traps, finds no traps, and opens the door into the next room!


The next room is nondescript aside from a hole in the ground near a far door, which appears to be a pit trap that some unfortunate has already triggered.

This room contains two centipedes the size of cats. Ranssyn effortlessly Melindas them to death when they charge. Everyone gains 15xp each. The centipedes have no treasure.


In the room, the door to the west also has no traps, and leads to some hallways, one of which leads somewhere familiar. The door to the south, past the pit trap, is closed.

Gesturing towards the southern door, she remarks: "According to the beholder's map, a set of keys should be just past that door. Be extra careful for traps. This will be a good test of how reliable that thing is."

"Yep. Let's do this. We're not in a hurry." Julius says. He'll begin to take 20 searching everything as he slowly makes his way into the room. Assuming nothing interesting happens he continues taking 20 searching the entire room. Anyone not searching he will tell to help out.

Ranssyn does not take the time to do a thorough clean and polish job on Melinda, but he does take a moment or two so he can hastily clean the centipede guts and blood off her blade before he moves on and rejoins with the group. Once back with the group he tries to assist in the search.

The party searches the whole room thoroughly! It takes a while.

They find neither traps nor treasure.

And no corpse at the bottom of the pit, whoever triggered it must have either avoided falling in or successfully climbed out. However, there is a strange Diminutive (6"-12") swirling yellow glow at the bottom of the pit, and the whole vicinity feels somehow heavier and more ordered than it should. Melikki is not bothered by this thing. Everyone (except Ranssyn, who isn't sure what it is) concurs that this is a rift in reality, a portal to the Lawful Plane of Earth. But nobody here will be able to fit through to the other side, and most of the denizens of the Plane of Earth are unlikely to be fit through to this side either.

Then he'll walk over to the south wall and talk to Xander. "Maybe we missed something? You want to check it again?" Julius says after pointing at the map that shows some type of room there.


Xander can hit 23 with taking 20 and I can assist him to hit a DC 25 for secret doors

Ranssyn's face makes a twisted distasteful expression when he hears Julius tell him to go down the pit to check the tiny portal. He stares down the pit for a long moment pondering the task at hand, and then starts to mutter offensive curse words under his breath. As normal he has a hard time controlling the volume of his voice so every foul word is easily heard by any standing nearby. He takes his pack off and begins to remove the lashings that secure his bundled coil of hemp rope to his backpack.

While freeing the rope, he hears Gudrun express her opinion on what the group should do if Ranssyn gets stuck in the pit which causes him to pause a moment in to rethink his decision and with a small relieved grin on his face he says to Gudrun
"Good point. Looks tight down there and who knows how slick it is at the bottom. Wouldn't want anyone getting stuck."

He then says loudly over to where Julius and Xander started their search of the area "Hey Julius, instead of me climbing in wouldn't it better if I used the rope and lowered someone lighter into the pit to check that portal?" his eyes glance over to Jeffrey who looks the lightest and smallest of the group and isn't engaged in Julius and Xanders investigation of the area.
"And who knows how slick that pit bottom is, might be damn near impossible to climb out. Plus it seems like whatever nutsacks are living around here like to coat everything in poison, even doornobs. So probably best if no one has to touch the bottom of the pit trap."

Ranssyn waves Jeffery over to the pit edge as if the decision has already been made, even though Ranssyn is completely unaware that he is the only one that doesn't know anything about the plane of earth or it's possible dangers.

The gravity in the vicinity of the portal is heavier than normal, but it's still not difficult to lower somebody light down on a rope to stick their arm in. Whoever does it feels around, and on the other side feels an open space of about a foot and then a slick hard irregular surface.

Oh, yes, there's definitely a closed door to the south here. Just beyond the pit. But it's only minimally difficult to access the door diagonally without falling into the pit. The door turns out to be neither locked nor trapped, but simply closed. Once the party is done with the pit and the portal, they open the door.

Beyond: NINE TINY CENTIPEDES. I suppose that's technically CR1, but Ranssyn can just stand in the doorway, absorb their hits unharmed (they can do at max 1 damage, even on a critical hit, which is needless to say somewhat less than his DR5/magic), and squash them all. So the centipedes are defeated.

Everyone gains 68xp!

In this room, the obvious thing to notice is swarms of ants (regular ants, harmless to adventurers) hauling around a miscellany of body parts, mostly humanoid. Soon the ants notice the dead centipedes and start hauling them away, too. They don't seem to be hauling the body parts to anyplace in particular. There's some unremarkable fallen stones, too.

I assume the party searches this room thoroughly, and so after much time they find the following: a key embossed with the sigil of the Adventurer's Guild, item #35 a scroll (labeled in what appears to be Undercommon, which none of the party speaks, but the label is damaged anyway), and, on a torso the ants are hauling around, item #36 some blood-stained studded leather armor! The armor is abjuration magical, and the scroll is also a magic scroll. The key is not magical.

From this room, there's an ajar door to the northeast, and a locked door to the south, and an ajar door to the west, and a door to the northwest that the party, having searched the room, notes is trapped.

Julius wipes his brow a bit after the search, the last two rooms took over an hour (at least) and they finally had the key. With a yawn, he scratches himself before looking at everyone else. "Ya'll it's gotta be late, I'm still feeling hungover from those frakkin' snakes. Let's take all the items and sleep for the night in the safe room. Get some more ale, talk bout' what we're gonna do next."

And lo, the party did close the doors and retreat to the safe room, and lo, they did rest for the night!

As per usual, Everybody heals their HD in HP and 1 from each damaged ability score! By my reckoning, that leaves Julius at 5 Con damage and Gudrun at 2 Con damage and Melikki fully healed of Dex damage, and everybody at pretty much their respective current max HPs -- but I could be wrong. ...Unless somebody Long Term Heals people.

It's not perfectly safe (monsters attempting to enter get a Will save), but it's pretty safe, and the few monsters that make the save and snuffle up the stairs are easily driven back by a few pokes from the weapons of whoever's on watch at the time.

Julius attempts to decipher the scroll! But fails!

Julius is going to cast read magic on item #35.

After sleeping for eight hours, Julius wakes up in the morning coughing up blood. He'll do some business in a corner of the room and sit there for a minute drinking some water from his waterskin.

When everyone is awake Julius will speak up, "A'ight. I don't think we're in a hurry to get back. We're finding a lot of easy treasure down here and nothing seems terribly resistant to Melinda. Also with Xander knowing something about every freak thing we see down here, need to get him to see this undead monstrosity and figure out what it is and how we can beat it in the future. I'd like to keep looking for these keys and figure out how they work. But, I'm still sick right now. That fight took more out of me than I care to admit. I'd like to rest for another day, with a prayer to let me heal faster, before moving out."

Ranssyn abruptly stops chewing his ration when he hears Julius's awful idea of going toward the tentacled undead beast and having a peek. He tries to quickly swallow down the rest of his half chewed dried beef but almost chokes. To prevent from coughing and gagging he takes a big swig from his everful mug of ale to help wash it down. When he is able to speak, he says

"Uh...I'm with Xander on this. It ain't like we got anyone in our group that's has any sort of scouting or sneaking experience. So even if we did try to avoid the undead nasty and just have a peek, we would probably get noticed and find ourself tangled up in a scrap with some nasty half rotten thing that would get us dead fast...or worse.

Besides even if we were able to steal the dagger, why in the nines would we want to trade a fine piece of steel for some stupid book?
Julius, werent you the one saying you wish we could get ourself some better armor?
Mmm, you looking a bit peekish. Probably the sickness or fever talking.
Probably a good call getting more rest. Give you a chance to shake the fever and get your thoughts sorted out. I don't know much about medicine and such so probably better if someone else looked over Julius tonight. Can one of you try to help Julius shake his illness while I'll keep watch? "

And so it is that the party continues to rest for an additional 24 hours, getting to know each other better and getting on each other's nerves better!


24 Hours Later

Nothing comes up the stairs or through the various doors that resists both the anti-monster orb and the various poking implements whoever's on guard at the time can deploy.

Between the rest, long term care from somebody, and Julius's spell, everybody seems to be back up to maximum fighting shape!

Right before the 24 hour rest

After the eight hour rest and the short discussion, Julius prayers for his new spells Healthful Rest, and Identify. He cast identify on item #36 and read magic on item #35. He will ask Jeffrey to use his 1/day identify on the "silver tube things."

Then he cast healthful rest on himself and rests for 24 hours.

Current Time

Julius will prepare another identify and use it on the fizzy tangerine potion and have Jeffrey identify item 19 (should be all the unidentified magic items).

Am I missing anything we haven't identified?

Julius identifies item #36: it's a +1 studded leather armor!

Julius reads magic on item #35: it's an arcane scroll of blindness/deafness!

Jeffery identifies one of the silvery tube things as a grell lightning lance! Requiring special grell alchemical techniques to creatue, a lightning lance functions only in the tentacles of a grell (DC25 Use Magic Device check per use to convince it you're a grell). It has 5 charges (which recharge fully every day) and with each charge can fire a bolt of electricity as a ranged touch attack dealing 3d6 electricity damage with no save. (It doesn't say specifically, but I think spell resistance does apply, for which purpose the lance has a CL of 3.) The lance has a real value of 3,800gp (and therefore will probably sell for half that).


Today

The fizzing tangerine potion identifies as a potion of cat's grace.

Jeffery first hits item #19 the vial of greenish liquid with detect magic, and it is not magical, so he doesn't waste his 1/day identify on it, as identify only identifies magic properties, of which this item has none.

Due to Ranssyn being raised in a clan of barbaric merciless warrior-hunters where showing fear or being scared was seen as weakness and pathetic, he never truly learned how to properly process and express those fearful emotions to others about his dreadful terror filled aversion of the undead he gained as a boy. Instead when scared, challenged, or asked about his undead phobia he uses what he learned from his callous ruthless abusive father. Rage and anger.

Julius's truthful words strike at Ranssyn's ears like a fan stoking a secret fire. He mutters through semi-gritted teeth
"Find another profession, huh? "
Ranssyn face seems to be getting a bit flush as he says "I'm the scared guy now, huh? I'm the Pissing my pants guy now?! "

Ranssyn takes a quick anger filled frustrated breath and begins his tirade but with each utterance of the phrase "I thought I was the type of guy...." his anger and volume gets louder.
" Because I thought I was the type of guy that busted down doors and ground up giant bugs the size of wagons into paste.

I thought I was the type of guy charging in unknown rooms and cutting big floating bird octopus thingies in two.

I thought I was the type of guy who stood in the front taking the bites of the centipedes so others didnt have ta.

I thought I was the type of guy, who was ready to go TOE TO TOE WITH ANY HAG-SCREWING UGLY SON OF A TROLL'S NUTSACKS THAT TRIED TO CROSS PATHS WITH OUR GROUP. "

Almost yelling by the end, spit flew from his mouth as he infuriatingly finished his ranted. He was no longer at shouting volume, but still louder than his normal stentorian volume.
" I thought I was the type of guy in a group that wanted to make easy coin and bounties. I'm suggesting an easier bounty because we ain't got the right skill set to be sneaking in a damn undead lair.
But I think what Julius is saying...I'm some other type of guy now. "

He looks Julius straight in the eyes and then ask with a slight dire tone to his voice
"Julius, If I didn't know any better, I would say your calling me the type of guy that is a COWARD? "
Ranssyn knuckles are pure white and his stare is intently locked on Julius for his response.

There is a pause as Julius gives Melikki a hand motion to calm down before he continues, "That's why it makes no sense - you actin' all spooked silly bout' buncha bones and rottin' flesh walking around. I gotta'n idea fer ya since it's easier. We just ask the beholder what that thing is. He knew where the keys are and he'd know what the thing is. Then I'm all satisfied. Our guy's all satisfied."

Julius then pauses briefly (and perhaps you're glad that he's trying to diffuse the situation) before adding with a very serious look on his face, "Then we ask the beholder if he has any guy sized diapers for the baby in the group."

There is a pause as Julius let's his words settle in before he starts laughing loudly at his own joke. Much louder than necessary.

When Ranssyn hears Julius snarky comment about diapers his anger goes from a hot roasting fire to a pure white hot blaze of fury. Forgetting all about tactic and use of his Ram horns he says "I HAD ENOUGH OF YOUR MUTT MOUTH" as he rushes in with a double leg taken down style of a tackle and brings the massive mongelman to the ground.

The two seem to go back and forth trading blows and holds. At one point, Melikki tried to help his master by biting into Ranssyn's leg, but Ranssyn shakes the jaws loose and barely notices as the bite wound instantly heals back up.

The grapple seems like a back and forth but due to Julius's size he does seem to get into the more advantageous positions. Although when Julius does have advantage and solidly lands blows, shots or holds, they don't seem to be having the same effect, if any ,as they would on a normal man, but the lack of effect doesn't seem to hinder either man's ambition from continuing to fight.

I PMed Jop and we decided to not slow down play by rolling this all out. Its just a RP thing and therefore figured we could just RP out the tussel and wait to see how the group will react.also I wasn't sure how Ranssyn DR would play out with non lethal stuff but I assumed he wouldn't be hurt.

Ranssyn had taken the brute quickly to the ground, and for the first thirty seconds or so this hadn't stopped Julius from laughing. A solid strike to his face turned his laughter into a snarl and the real fight began.

At first Julius seemed to get the upper hand, grabbing Ranssyn by the horns and slamming his face into the ground. When Julius had lifted his head up to look at it, and found nothing but some shattered floor pieces stuck to his face, a look of confusion appeared on his face. "What the..." Julius had trailed off. The fight turned poorly for him at that point and Ranssyn began delivering body blows on him as Julius scrambled for a handle on the situation. With Julius gasping for air, Ranssyn was able to land several elbows into Julius' fat face. After a couple of minutes of them fighting around the room, Julius finally got into a good position and pinned the smaller man.

The fight then quickly stalled between the two of them, Julius just trying to keep Ranssyn pinned (since he couldn't hurt him) and Ranssyn trying to get out of the pin. Briefly there were moments where Ranssyn would escape only to find himself in another pin. After about five minutes of them rolling around and fighting on the ground, Ranssyn finally got out and dove out of the grapple. Both of them winded from the long fight, they didn't seem eager to re-engage.

Julius looked much worse for the wear, with a broken looking nose, an eye that was swollen shut, and as he pulled out his waterskin he spit a mouthful of blood onto the ground. Ranssyn was just sweaty.

As they sat there for a second they both listened to Xander speak (previous post).

The tiefling woman is looking to be in a much better mood after two days of rest. Though she never would have admitted it, that constitution damage took a lot out of her. She watches the two men fight with a bemused look on her face.

"I want to take a look at this undead monstrosity myself. And I mean that literally. I'm descended from devils and much harder to kill than either of you, plus I have spells I can use to get away in a pinch. If there's a big zombie for us to cut up, I want at it."

EDIT: Gudrun would also like a guess at what exactly it is. Knowledge religion and arcana are both +3

He sits on the floor with one knee up and the other leg straight while he tries to catch his breath. His hair, clothes and gear look in disarray and a small black and blue puffiness can now be seen on his right eye. Although his outward appearance betrays the brawl he just experienced, his face displays a pleasant semi peaceful smile and his body language seems to convey an almost relaxed jubilant vibe.

While listening to the others talk, he pulls out his Everful mug of ale. He quietly (well at least quietly for Ranssyn) says the command word to fill the mug "Dumblenuts”

Once filled, He sips on his mug while listening to Gudrun speak of how she wants to look at the undead and Monstrosity. He raises an eyebrow slightly in a questioning manner when she mentions that she was much harder to kill than any of the other group members but instead of saying anything he just glups down the remains of the mug. He wipes his mouth with his sleeve and then says the command word and uses the last daily charge of his mug to fill it once again. Ranssyn then offers the mug over to Julius before he starts laying out all the items to be sold.

" Aint the best tasting stuff, but strong enough to do the job."

Julius tries to figure out item #19 the green liquid. He barely touches it -- it doesn't dissolve his finger or anything! Maybe he even tastes a drop. It's not acid, nor is it a contact or ingested poison. He doesn't know what it is.

Everybody puts their heads together on the issue of the liquid. Gudrun eventually nominates she's pretty sure it's a poison (injury, because it's not contact or ingested), and Jeffery is pretty sure it's a single dose of large scorpion venom (injury DC18 1d6str/1d6str 200gp real value).

#36 the +1 studded leather armor sells for 580gp, the two grell lightning lances sell for 1900 each, the potion of cat's grace sells for 150gp, the arcane scroll of blindness/deafness sells for 75gp. That's 4,605gp.

At this point, Jeffery collects his 921gp cut of the loot and then takes his leave, saying he wants to return to Endeesy for reasons and/or purposes.


As the way to the beholder and the way to the Enormous Betentacled Undead Monstrosity both go through the room to the north, the party seems like they will eventually head into that room. Something's been chewing on the corpse they left behind here. Multiple somethings, probably, but immediately apparent is the 4 monstrous centipedes the size of men!

But three of the centipedes get effortlessly Melindaed when they charge. Ranssyn misses the last, but it fails to penetrate his DR. Xander tries to Eldritch Blast it, but misses, but then Ranssyn headbutts it to death with his horns o' doom.

Ranssyn, Xander, Julius, and Gudrun gain 150xp each!

The centipedes have no obvious loot.

Julius eagerly takes the mug from Ranssyn and drinks heartily from it with a big brutish grin.

Julius tries to talk Jeffrey out of leaving for reasons/purposes and there is a moment where it looks like Julius might attack Jeffrey. However the large brute of a man carefully eyes his companions as if sizing them up. He spits some more blood out of his mouth and simply says, "Bye."

When they get to the beholder, Julius will inquire, "Xinosh!! Good day good day. What's everything you know about the huge undead tentacle thing.?"

Only two effective against undead. And am not disintegrating enough to be destroying colossal monster before it is bopping poor Xinosh like volleyball."

Ranssyn listens as Xinosh explains how dangerous the creature is and makes a "I told you so" hand motion to emphasize the beholders words of warning. His gives a small self reassuring nod when he hears Xinosh declare that the creature is even dangerous to look at. Ranssyn seems confident that the group will change their mind about going after the creature, but his satisfied grin hastily morphs into a pale faced expression of disbelief when he hears Julius explain to Xinosh his plans have not changed and he still wants to go forth with trying to kill the nightmarish undead.

Ranssyn opens his mouth to protest, but his words are stolen when he hears Gudrun give her eager exclamation of excited delight from Xinosh stating that the huge and deadly tentacled undead could easily dispatch him like a child's sportball.

Ranssyn stands blinking in gobsmacked awe at his parties disregarding reaction to the dire warnings given by the Beholder. While Gudrun inquires about potions Ranssyn tries to gather his wits and suppress his overwhelming fear as best as he can. Finally he says

"Wait so...Let me get this straight. First we was just talking about sneaking and having a look, but after some good ol' fashion convincing we decided to come back here, and talk with Xinosh first to see what wisdom he had on this beast. Xinosh is all like...
with a little bit of fearful overwrought energy Ranssyn lowers the tone of his voice a bit and does a horrible impression of Xinosh
"Hello's, For hi's,..Killer undead? Well I'm a deadly beholder that got eyes that can do all sorts of powers. I even got eyes that can disintegrate stuff, but I aint even strong enough or stupid enough to try fighting that massive creature of death, but you breadbrains want to and..."

Ranssyn quickly trails off and stops talking as he realizes in his frantic attempt to dissuade the group he did a shoddy imitation of Xinosh with the beholder floating directly next to him, and that Xinosh being a beholder and such might consider the impersonation offensive. Ranssyn clears his throat and says to Xinosh cautiously.
No offense Xinosh. I think you're grand and I think you're talking a boatload of smart stuff but my friends here aint seeming to be hearing a word of it.
Xinosh you got any armor that be undead proof? or anything to protect from this undead beasty from tearing me to bits?"

If this thing was that great and powerful, it would have smashed its way to the surface and gone on a rampage. Either it isn't as terrible as that, or there's something keeping it here. Something fantastic and expensive, I bet."

She points at Xinosh. "Just because it scares a beholder doesn't mean it needs to scare us. He's scared because his eye rays don't work. Rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, etc. What if Xinosh is a rock and this thing is paper? Isn't it at least worth a look to see if we're scissors?"

Xinosh rotates 360' along the Z axis as he chortles with hilarity at Ranssyn's impression of him, "Is funny, is good impression!"

Meanwhile, the party puts their heads together and, with this new information, Xander produces an answer: he has, it turns out, heard of creatures potentially like this before, terrible undead monsters used as weapons of war by a nearly-forgotten nation of desert-dwelling necromancers in the time before the Inundation. Known as Crawling Apocalypses, they are, in fact, mummified krakens, paralyzing to behold and spreading the curse/disease mummy rot to those they touch.

Ranssyn sulkingly stands and listens as Xander comes to the realization that the monster Xinosh is describing it's probably a undead kraken called a Crawling Apocalypses. Ranssyn crosses his arms but doesnt say much else since he has already expressed his opinion to the group and made a semi fool out of himself to Xinosh. He just waits to see if the new information has any effect on changing the desire and motivation of Julius and Gudrun to go hunt and die trying to kill the beast.

EDIT: I just realized Xander was the one that made the conclusion what the monster was and I jumped the gun with Ranssyn's response since I made the assumption Xander shared the info the group. Ranssyn's action/words above are only if Xander shared the info with the group. if xander doesn't then Ranssyn will still sulk a bit, but instead of waiting to see if the news changed their minds he just waits to see what plan they have.

Julius walks into the room and glances at what Melikki is growling at. He sort of gives Ranssyn a look as if to ask him to check it out. The large mongrelfolk walks up to the hole and holds his lantern to see farther down through it. Julius is checking it out to see if he would fit through it if he wanted to crawl through, and looking for anything dangerous as well. In his other hand he's holding one of his weak acid flasks.

Ranssyn gives a nod of acknowledgement to Julius and his nonverbal request, and begins to approach the wardrobe. He stops just short of the wardrobe and listens a moment to see if he can hear anything coming from it or within.

If he doesn't hear anything then he opens the wardrobe door, but if he hears something then he will react differently depending on what he hears.

When I said "a hole", I meant "a hole in the wall" -- my bad for the confusion, I failed at words because I was afflicted with a stroke of dumb. I didn't want to say "archway", because that would be confusing with the magical archways. The word I was looking for was, in fact, "doorway".

To the west: two small heaps of mushrooms and fungi, a destroyed wall to the south, a hole (actual vertical hole this time!) in the ceiling to the southwest, several doors.


As Julius goes to peer through the doorway to the west, Ranssyn goes to examine the cabinet! He hears nothing strange about it, so he grasps the handle and opens it -- and his hand sticks fast to the handle, and a terrible maw opens up within the cabinet and attempts to eat him!

Ranssyn takes 7 damage (before DR, so actually 2) as the mimic chews on him, and is effectively grappled!

Ranssyn calls out to the rest of the party as the wardrobe's gapping maw swallows his hand and wrist and begins to twist about and wrench his arm in a painful unnatural angle.
"GAH! Little help over here!" through gritted teeth Ranssyn puts his foot on the wardrobe near his engulfed wrist and tries to get free by pushing off and away with the strength of his legs.

Ranssyn struggles and tries to free himself, but all he manages to do is get his firmly feet stuck to the creature.


Gudrun rushes in and strikes the mimic with a shocking grasp! She (barely) hits it, because it is grappling! She swords it with great justice and electricity, and it goes "WARGHLEBARGHLEBLARGHLE"! Then she successfully pulls her weapon free of the mimic before the adhesive has a chance to stick it!


Xander completely misses the entire fight with his pewpews!


The mimic chews on Ranssyn some more (trying to eat him up so it can move on to defending itself from Gudrun), but finds him hard to digest! Still, Ranssyn takes 12 damage (before DR)!

Ranssyn tosses about in the chopping jaws of the monstrous creature. while severely injured and drenched by a mixture of the creature's saliva and his own blood that massively gushes from various wounds on his body, Ranssyn grits his teeth and summons all the strength he can and calls out his clan's battle cry.
"FEAR THE WOLF AND LION!" Realizing he can not get free Ranssyn throws his ram horns back as far as they can go as he tries to smash the creature with all his might.

The tiefling woman woke up feeling much more evil this morning than she did yesterday, so she's having trouble figuring out why Julius cares if Ranssyn gets hurt. Perhaps leaving him alive longer lets the beast focus on eating him instead of the rest of the party so they can kill it. That's got to be it. Eager to finally have something big and meaty to channel her spells at, she goes in for another shocking grasp attack.

Xander pulled up his attack at the last second, at Julius’ warning. He then moved right next to Ranssyn and used a charge from his healing belt to patch him up a bit.

Julius moves up next to the mimic and spears it! It leaks nasty juices, and his spear sticks fast to it!

Melikki does not want to approach the aberration.


Ranssyn gets mad, and headbutts the mimic! Now his hand, feet, and face horns are all firmly stuck to the mimic.


Gudrun brings her sword back down into the mimic again, and it explodes with shocking electricity, killing the mimic quite thoroughly dead!


Xander ambles up and heals Ranssyn for 11, bringing him back to full.


Five rounds later, the adhesive sloughs away and everyone is freed.


Ranssyn, Xander, and Julius gain 338XP each, Gudrun gains 300XP!

Spilling from the mimic's corpse comes 30.8gp in miscellaneous coinage, and a Small masterwork studded leather armor, all that remains of a previous victim.

Julius

Julius is laughing as huge long strands of sticky gooey mimic slime slowly let's Ranssyn out of the grapple. While Ranssyn is still stuck, he mounts on top of the mimic grabbing it's dead goey maw and starts shaking it back and forth, "Gundrun noo, gonna shít myself!!! WARGHLEBARGHLEBLARGHLE!" Julius screams mimicking the mimic's scream (perfectly by the way using his sound imitation ability). Then he goes back laughing, pulling his hands off totally coming away with huge strands of mimic slime he says, "I don't think you eat mimic's. But if anyones up to try some we could try to cook up this gooey soupy sloppy meat."

Julius makes some change and splits the gold evenly, giving everyone 7 gold, 7 silver. The coins look like something pulled out of a dying mimics gut - all slimy and gooey sticking together with long strands of white opaque amorphous viscera. The armor isn't in much better condition but it is masterwork so maybe after a good cleaning it'll be worth something. He does check with Xander to make sure it's just masterwork and not magical before stuffing it into his bulging backpack.

Ranssyn exhaustedly pulls himself from the mimic, and barely notices Julius’s funny performance using the Mimic meat puppet. . While the others are looking over the gear He takes as moment to catch his breath and scrap off what goo he can and say

"Remind me to never mess with a…What was that thing called again?"



Ranssyn never actively lowerd his spell resistance before Xander used his belt but then again IC I don’t think Xander has been made aware Ranssyn even has Spell resistance:

Once he is cleaned himself and Melinda up a bit he is ready to travel. Although he is still heavily wounded.

Julius looks at Xander, "Fane's, they ain't human. You know that right? When you figure out what he is, let me know. Really interested in how I win next time. I need magical brass knuckles? Silver? Adamantine? What we talkin' here? Skin's like metal, resist spells. Super human."

The mongrelman pulls out a wand that looks comically small in his hand, grinning he approaches Ranssyn, "Mimic chewed on the wrong guy, eh? Anyone else and I think things would have not been so funny. You want some more healing then?"

If Ranssyn says yes, he'll use a charge of lesser vigor when his spell resistance is down, healing for 11 hit points.

Regardless, Julius presses on. He puts away his spear and grabs his weak acid flask and his hooded lantern and moves through the western doorway. Julius gets to about fifteen feet away from the mushrooms and says, "Hopefully these are the ones Gropagas use to receive their 'visions'."

Looking for someone to identify them, unless Julius passes a knowledge check (bound to happen at some point).

Ranssyn still heavily damaged says "I'll gladly take some healing, thanks. Give me a second to lower my defense." He then focuses his thoughts and lowers his ability to resist magic. once lowered, he gives a nod of readiness and acceptance for Julius to use his wand.

He then gathers his gear (once semi cleaned) and prepares to travel.

The party closes to within 15' of the mushroom patches, and examines them! Julius identifies these as phycomids, dangerous mushrooms that shoot acidic spore packets. Xander moreover knows that, and also that the spores are extremely dangerous, like poison or disease in that they eat you from the inside out and then if you die they sprout a new phycomid.

Meanwhile, the phycomids become aware of the party! They turn little tube-nozzles towards the party and prepare to shoot acid spores!

Xander > one of the phycomids > Gudrun > Julius and Melikki (who will, in fact, be willing to attack them, as they are reasonably natural) > Ranssyn > the other phycomid

"Frakkin' acid spitters. Lasz! Lasz!" Julius shouts at the group, and then Melikki. Melikki immediately starts sprinting at the fungus barking loudly. The mongrelman, however, acts even quicker, dropping his lantern and flask, and moving with an almost supernatural speed to the flat-footed phycomid's flank. Getting to the fungus' flank way before his dog gets there. Wasting no time, except for the time he wastes waiting on Melikki to bite at it, he dives at the spore shooter, roughly grabbing at the stalk so that the fungus can't fire at the group.


Free: Drop lantern and acid flask (close to the floor so it doesn't break)
Move: Command Melikki to attack
Swift: Activate Travel Devotion and move to the phycomid's flank (the one who hasn't acted yet)
Standard: Ready an action to grapple once Melikki attacks the Phycomid (should be same initiative count, if not ignore this)
Standard: Grapple touch attack [roll0]+2 bab, +2 str, +2 flanking, +2 Knowledge Devotion vs flat-footed touch AC and opposed grapple [roll1] and grapple damage [roll2] non-lethal

Ranssyn seemed almost caught off guard by the dangerous mushrooms. After hearing Julius shout about the fungus being acid spitters he quickly regained his awareness and began to advance on the threat as hastily as possible. Once with within reach of the one not being grappled, he attempts to give the fungal growth a proper kinetic introduction to Melinda by slashing into to the mass of the acidic spitting caps.

Xander issues a pewpew, striking the eastern phycomid for damage! It twitches! Then he ducks behind the wall!


The western phycomid shoots a spore at Julius! It hits him! Julius takes 5 acid damage, but his body effortlessly resists the spore infection!


Gudrun rushes in, swording at the fungus! But its tough fungusiness resists her blade.


Julius puts down his lantern and his flask of acid, commands Melikki to attack, zooms over to the phycomid that hasn't acted, and readies an action!

Melikki rushes in and misses the phycomid!

Julius grapples the phycomid! It is Small and not very strong and rolls a natural 1, so he does so effortlessly. Actually, y'know what, since it rolled a -1, even though it wasn't on an attack, I'mm'a pull from the critical fumble deck. Off balance: It can only make a Move action next round.


Ranssyn steps to the eastern phycomid and Melindas it! It twitches unhappily, nearing dead!


The eastern phycomid reflexively spores at Ranssyn! But it's being threatened by Ranssyn, Gudrun, and Melikki, who all take whacks at it, and Gudrun and Melikki hit it, and it dies before it can complete its attack!

The mongrelman had taken a glancing blow of the plant thing's loogie. The hit was on the man's leg and he had stumble a little bit from the blow. Gritting his teeth he attempts to pin the fungus and make it real easy like for his allies to beat to death.

Xander moves in, and readies a pewpew!


The phycomid, restricted to taking only a move action this round, cannot even attempt to escape.


Gudrun walks over to the phycomid that Julius is holding on to, and swords it with great justice! It oozes nasty juices and falls unconscious!


Julius, Melikki, and Ranssyn finish it off.


Ranssyn, Xander, and Julius gain 675 XP each, Gudrun gains 600 XP!

The phycomids were sitting on little heaps of treasure! Several coins totalling 63.4gp and item #40 a scroll! The scroll is labeled in a language nobody here happens to be able to read, but which seems to use the dwarvish alphabet.


As the party counts the loot, suddenly, there is a bzornt-bzornt-slam from the east!


Meanwhile, Elsewhere, A Minute Or Two In The Past

Alegri "Ironheart" Beren (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1629833)'s party, elsewhere in the dungeon, got entangled with a bunch of tentacle-brain-beak-balloon-monsters that none of them had any idea what they were! The monsters paralyzed the rest of the party and hauled them away, while Alegri turned tail and bolted as soon as it looked like things were going completely tits-up.

Luckily, there was a teleportation archway nearby! The party had previously identified the archway, but not where it went, and had elected not to go through it, but, surrounded, Alegri had no choice but to flee through it! (As one of her previous party members had hypothesized the archway could be random, Alegri went through holding Jeff's hand, so he didn't go someplace else.)


Meanwhile, Here, In The Present

The archway where Alegri emerges has two ajar doors, an X carved into one wall, and an old humanoid corpse.

Upon emerging from the teleportation archway, Alegri immediately chose a nearby door, bolted through it, and slammed it behind her and Jeff! And then she found herself in a room containing a dead mimic to the left, and in the next room straight ahead she sees lantern-light and hears the jingling of coins and chatter of people talking.

Julius

Julius will spend a minute trying to read the scrollSpellcraft [roll0], before simply casting read magic on it (if necessary). He divides the coin into four equal stacks of 15 gold pieces and puts the change in the group drinking fund (3 gp, 4 sp).


Upon hearing the commotion to the east he stands up slowly, wincing from the pain on his leg, and raises the hooded lantern to see what is approaching.

Alegri see's that the man holding the hooded lantern is clearly a mongrelfolk; a huge brute of one too. He must be seven feet tall and nearly everything he is wearing looks like it was made for a smaller man (especially his poor shoes... how did he fit his feet in them?). His chain shirt links are stretched to capacity and it's only a stretch or two away from tearing something. For some reason he is covered with white opaque gooey slime and then it looks like he was rolling around in something dirty and green. He looks, well honestly he looks like a buffoon. But a large buffoon. You watch him say something to two horned human looking individuals next to him but you can't hear what he says.

"A bounty on the engineer... 25 plat."

Suddenly he gets all friendly like, has a big toothy grin on his face, and waves politely.

"Hello there warrior!" Julius calls out, clearly speaking to Jeff.

Alegri

Alegri hears the sounds of conversation and coins; not, generally, the sounds that undead abominations or feral beasts make. Even still, her day hasn't exactly gone to plan, and she's inclined to be cautious. She motions for Jeff to be quiet-- not that he talks much-- and she silently places her psicrystal, Proactivity, on the ground. The crystal unfurls four wire-thin legs, and it scuttles off to investigate.

In the next room, someone with very keen eyes might spot a tiny glimmer by the door; but it's gone as soon as it appears.

A moment, later, the fungus-defeating party will hear the approach of a pair of humanoids, both making very deliberate footsteps. "I mean no harm," Alegri calls out before entering the doorway. "I've simply become separated from my adventuring party. My name is Alegri Beren, and I'm a friend."

Her voice is calm and smooth, and she has no weapon in her hand as she turns the corner. Alegri is a tall engineer, which means that she's the shortest person in the room by a wide margin. She's wearing a fine set of mithral armor that peeks out beneath relatively loose, flowing clothing. She wears a belt with various gear, but no pack; behind her, a dim-looking mongrelman slouches beneath an extremely full looking satchel.

Alegri glances over the group, taking her stock of each of them, before settling her gaze on the barbaric-looking human with startling eyes. "We can get along, can't we?"

To Julius, Jeff the mongrelman makes no reply other than a curt nod. Jeff isn't the most sociable person in the world.

We're the Evil party, so I'm going to start off with a bang! Please make a Will save vs DC 15.
Ranssyn feels a strong sense of comradery and attachment to this poor, lost, scared little Engineer. He's pretty sure she's the kind of person he could be good friends with. In fact, she feels like she's already his friend.
Nothing at all happens. Ranssyn should be unaware that a Power was used on him.

Alegri manifests Psionic Charm, expending her psionic focus to Overchannel the power without taking damage. That means that it'll last 4 hours if it works. She'll concentrate to prevent the display, which is a mental chime that sounds within the minds of anyone 15 feet from her. However, she'll take care to not be within 15 feet of the party before manifesting.

She'll also make a general Diplomacy check: [roll1] You can't influence PC's with Diplomacy, so take this as a 'how nice does she sound' check.

Standing slightly apart from the behemoth mongrelman and the other party members is a muscular looking woman holding a greatsword. The sides of her head are shaved to highlight the two small horns protruding from her skull, marking her as a tiefling. She rests her greatsword tip-down on the floor but doesn't put it away as she appraises the newcomers.

"Only two legs, arms, and eyes, so you're not from down here. No weapons but you also have a mongrel lackey? A spellcaster then?"

Gudrun nods her head in Julius's direction, seeming to indicate that she, too, has a mongrel servant to do her bidding.

Alegri frowns very slightly at the as-yet-unnamed Karsite; she wasn't sure if their innate resistance to magic would work on her psionic powers, but it seemed that it did.

The tiefling woman catches her attention, and she renews her smile. Alegri decides to put a hold on any more Charming unless it seems necessary. "Perceptive of you. Jeff here is my faithful companion, though I don't ask him to fight." Jeff scratches his ear, possibly in confirmation of her statement. Or possibly because it itches. "I'm a Psion, if you want to get specific. A little tidier than magic, in my opinion."

She glances over the group again, thoughtful. "May I ask if you're down here for a specific purpose? I'm currently between adventuring parties, and unless I'm mistaking that gore on you, it seems like you're exactly that."

I'm assuming that a Knowledge (Local) of 22 (rolled in the OOC) is enough to recognize Karsites and their general properties. I'll change her thoughts if that isn't correct.

The mongrelfolk gives Gundrun a dismissive look at his implication of their respective roles here. As he stands there listening to the engineer he suddenly seems much more interested when Alegri mentions she's a psion.

Standing a little bit taller than he was before (and despite the fact it looks like Ranssyn is about to say something) Julius begins speaking in pretty good dinlun, "A Pkeum, vrae dedm's aeui koae ku? Furseqa kae ovvaoromca bis, yes, the gore gives us away. We came down here simply to retrieve a key but with the amount of coin we're finding down here, not in much of a hurry to run back. You can join us, we just lost our diplomacer. His coin purses got too heavy for him and decided to cash in."

Julius extends a meaty hand down to Alegri, "Not us though - Julius D.M. Bloodstorm. Humble servant of Hafgufa. My compatriots, Xander, entomancer extraordinaire, Gundrun arcane firepower, and Ranssyn a freakishly tough, strong, and resistant to spells, super human. We mostly stand behind him. Our mascot, Melikki here is a force to be reckoned with too." Melikki is apparently a small armored dog, looks like an elvish beagle. With chain shirt barding.


"Rules are simple, we can be friends or partners. Whatever title you prefer. As long as you're useful we'll split the shares equally. Trust me, we ain't fighting over profits here. Plenty for all. You thinking of turning on us, means I'm doin' somethin' wrong. I plan to make a name for myself. Run a rival mercenary guild to the current monopoly they got festerin' in Endeesy. Can't be making a name for myself if word gets out that we're just killing each other on bounties- this is a profitable ship I plan to run here. However, I'm be honest with you. Julius creaks his neck a little bit, "Right now, I'm thinking of going to the grell area and start cleansing them bugs out. Frakken tentacles creep me out. The two we fought each had a lightning lance that we were able to sell for nearly 200 plat each. Puts a lot of those bounties to shame. And best of all killing them grell's does play to our strengths."

Julius looks down at her, "Anyway, we're trying to get some good gear to arm ourselves so we can start earning a reputation. Make a name for ourselves. What you say?"

Alegri quickly adjusts her opinion of Julius, giving the mongrelman a discerning look. "Ihr Akzent ist hervorragend für einen Oberflächenbewohner. Gut getroffen. Thank you for being straightforward with me, Julius Bloodstorm. To be straightfoward in return, I think your terms are fair and amenable; my previous group had a similar arrangement before they got killed by floating tentacle-brain-paralysis monsters."

She shrugs, as if the deaths weren't a concern to her. "As for my own capabilities, I can do the basic things you'd expect of a Psion; manipulating energy, creating ectoplasm. Things like that. I've also been called persuasive, but I find that when I'm talking to someone reasonable," she gives Julius a conspiratorial wink, "I don't need to exercise any special powers to find a compromise. And I do like your broader goals, especially if you don't trouble yourself too much with unreasonable laws and restrictions. This is a new world, in many ways; I think there is plenty of room for new groups to take power before things become calcified."

She pauses, then adds as an afterthought, "Oh, and to be perfectly fair, you'd only need to part with one share of any spoils, not two. Jeff's job is to carry my things and stay out of fights."

I wasn't sure what language to use, so I went German, which is a classic "Dwarven-y" language.

She said "Your accent is excellent for a surface dweller. Well met."

Julius will spend a minute trying to read the scrollSpellcraft [roll0], before simply casting read magic on it (if necessary). He divides the coin into four equal stacks of 15 gold pieces and puts the change in the group drinking fund (3 gp, 4 sp).


Gonna give Ranssyn a chance to respond before posting again. If it doesn't change anything, after combat Julius would have used the lantern and his low-light vision to look up the hole in the ceiling for a second or two before splitting loot out and casting read magic. Just want a description.

The tall broad-shouldered man with long shaggy shoulder length hair and large thick curling savage black Ram horns protruding from the sides of his forehead watches the two newcomers carefully. His masterwork chain mail and simple clothes are filthy with blood-soaked battle ripped holes in them and entirely covered in some unidentified white opaque gooey slime. Unlike his bedraggled appearance, the weapon he carries is a Guisarme which looks masterly crafted and meticulously taken care of.

After the female Engineer is done introducing herself and her lackey, Ranssyn begins to feel the familiar warm irritating prickle of the curative itchiness that is associated when his body supernaturally absorbs magical energy and instantaneously shifts it into metabolic healing.

His Heterochromia eyes are locked on the new duo, but they shift from a cautious stare to a menacing glare. Ranssyn contemplates attacking the two interlopers,

but instead decides since the group has the strangers out numbered and the duo are acting friendly that he would just let the group know that Alergi or Jeff are using magics on himself and possible the whole group. As Ranssyn opens his mouth to inform the group, Julius cuts him off and begins to speak.
Ransynn grunts slightly at being interrupted, but lets Julius do what he seems to do better than fighting which is talking.

After the conversation finishes, it becomes obvious to Ranssyn that Alegri is the one that attempted some type of psionic power on him. He approaches his new partner Alegri, closing in at a distance perhaps closer than normal social boundaries. Once he towers over her, he looks down at the engineer and begins to speak. His voice is much louder than is necessarily needed to be used considering the quiet underground ambient noise and dangerous location they are in, but he doesn’t seem to notice and by the non-reaction of his other partners it must be the normal volume that which he speaks.
" I’m Ranssyn. Welcome to the group…" without missing a beat, the tone of his voice then instantly shifts to a more direct and stern tone, and his steely stare hastily shifts to a slightly murderous glare as he continues to talk "..Oh ..and if you ever try to use your Psion stuff on me again me without me say'in so. I’ll kill you and your boy toy, we clear?" He glances up to Jeff to see if her bootlicker reacts in any hostile manner, and he glances over to the other group members to make sure they heard him(since he doesnt realize how loud he is) that she was using her abilities on the group before hand.

Intimidation check[roll0] Basically, Ranssyn trying to make a stern point to the new party members who tried to use magic/psionic on him

Julius looks like he's about to respond to Gudrun until he hears Ranssyn, "Ranssyn what in the nine hells I just say about killing each other? You save the killing for things gonna get us rich. Alegri, sames go for you. None that mind stuff on us and whatever. You'll get far more coin workin' with us anyway. No sense in cuttin' the golden egg out of the golden egg layin' goose; sure you're smart enough to see the logic there."

Julius walks back over to the hole in the ceiling to see what's up there.

I recognized that you were a Karsite, and thought a bit of healing might be an appropriate icebreaker. Clearly that was a poorly-chosen course of action. If it's any consolation, I didn't try anything dangerous or harmful, or anything that would subvert your will. Just a little mental slight of hand that I assumed your magical resistance would consume."

She looks to the rest of the group. "Frankly, using my power to try and get people like you to do what I want is difficult, costly, and time-consuming. Alegri raises her brow at the question, seemingly surprised. "Why does anyone want gold, Xander?" She glances to Julius, as if to say 'he knows what I'm talking about'. "Power. I want gold because money is a discrete form of power. It's not the only kind of power I want, but it's the easiest to talk about and quantify. I can say I have a thousand gold; it's more complicated to say how much political capital or psionic energy I have at my disposal."

She gestures to Jeff, who is currently chewing on his thumbnail. "Why does Jeff carry my tent and food around in this dangerous, dank cave? I'm not bending his brain with my psionics; I'm giving him gold. Well, silver, but the point stands. If you want to change things, if you want to impose your will on the world, gold is the most basic requirement."

The little Engineer straightens her chainmail. "And there may be better ways for me to earn money, ways that don't involve killing aberrations in caves. But I learned the hard way that my powers will not grow unless I use them under duress, in new and difficult situations. So here I am, and here you are. I suspect you're here for the very same reasons I am, even if you don't think of them in those terms."

Ranssyn continues to glower at Alegri a few lingering moments longer after getting a tongue lashing from Julius about not killing group members and while she attempts to justify her use of powers on the brutish man. His menacing stare slowly softens as he mulls over her explanation. He then gives a curt nod and steps away from the lilliputian women as Xander begins to question her desire of gold.

Ranssyn pulls out his oil cloth and begins to wipe Melinda's blade and shaft down to remove any clingy remains of the acidic mushrooms. While cleaning his weapon, he listens in as Alegri explains the difference between power and gold. He softly nods in agreement with some of her ideological statements on the subject.


After the small Engineer women finishes speaking, Ranssyn with a stentorian interjection says "All this Gold talk gots me wanting to find some“ Ranssyn looks over to Julius "You got a plan for us to find these squiddy bird brained floating freaks so we can sell more of those lightning lance thingies?"

You know mine, pretty vocal about it. Reputations'just nother word for power. Don't know much about you Xander. Seems you like to just summon bugs and know things. You a collector? “I’ll sell it eventually,” Xander replied, “soon as we get back to town and with enough gold to buy something better. As for what I’m doing, I was supposed to go to mage school. Never really got my head on straight with the studying, and they didn’t let me in. Lot of people looked down on me because of that. One in particular, we were supposed to get married, but she left me instead when I didn’t get in.”

“So I made a deal,” he continued, greenish eldritch fire appearing in his palm, “and now I have magic, and I’m going to get good at using it so they know it was wrong to look down on me, and so she’ll come back to me, or at the least she’ll regret having left me.”

The flames evaporated, leaving Xander standing there.

“Oh, and I got cursed by a mage, with chickens,” Xander said, “so, I gotta get rid of that Too somehow.”

Up, the hole leads... up. Beyond the range of the lantern. It begins as a narrow-ish chimney, wide enough for even Julius, but widens out gradually. It's pretty rough wall. Notably, the hole appears to postdate the Subsidence -- no dead barnacles or anything. If you could get a boost, or be, as Julius is, tall enough to reach the actually somewhat low-ish ceiling, it probably wouldn't be very difficult to climb up, especially the first, chimneyish bit.

He hands the hooded lantern to Jeff, clearly expecting him to hold it. While the group is talking he'll take twenty searching the most western of the northern doors.

"Changed my mind, they might be expecting us to go through the archway." Julius says before opening the door.


Of the three doors to the north, the most western door. It's the open, broken, or slightly ajar door. On the map it's the one directly north of Julius.

Julius tried read magic on the scroll, and that does work! Item #40 is an arcane scroll of spectral hand!


Julius searches the door, and does not find any traps. But then he does find a trap, with his face (a magical one with a search DC higher than 20 (and also higher than 22), so he couldn't have found it searching)! It zoots out a powerful beam of electricity, catching him in a line of lightning bolt! Julius takes 30 points of electricity damage and falls over, twitching, his hair standing on end! (Recall that in this game, you die at negative your Constitution score, not -10.)

Julius hit the ground incredibly hard as the force of the bolt lifted him off his feet. With the healing magic flowing through him, he was out perhaps for little bit less than ten seconds.

"Hafgufa..." Julius muttered to himself as he opened his eyes which were furiously being licked by Melikki. "Alright boy, ALRIGHT" Julius says putting a big ol' paw on the hounds muzzle.

Slowly Julius clambers to his feet, and mysteriously says, "Hafgufa spoke to me..."

The mongrelman took out a wand of lesser vigor and used a charge on himself. 22 charges remaining.

Whether he says yes or no, she'll turn her attention to the door. "Do we have anyone trained in disarming traps? I must confess, I never put much study into that area."

Perhaps I'll have to pick up a level of Psionic Artificer. I'm sure Malimar would love that. :smallwink:

Julius looks a little angry at Xander, "No. But we have someone who can detect magic at will. You want to alert us from now on if any doors radiate magic?"

Julius seems to be feeling better as the healing magic continues to work, calmly he continues, "How about we do this from now on, Xander hits all the doors in the room with detect magic when we first walk in. Then Alegri searches the door for non-magical traps. Then Ranssyn can open the door since he's resistant to everythin'."


"The grell seem to only be using lightning attacks, we can go back and pick up something to make us resistant to it, or Ranssyn you can open the door." Julius says as he finishes healing.

When Julius gets zapped by the door, Gudrun nods. "It'll be something like that. I've been fond of this lightning spell since I figured it out."

Gudrun shrugs in response to Alegri. "Neither did I."

In response to Julius: "I'm also naturally resistant to electricity, but even beyond that, I have a spell to pass my resistance along. It will last around three quarters of an hour, so once we're sure we're close, I will cast it on you all. It will leave me low on spells, so let's make it count."

Alegri nods to the group. "I can provide a keen eye for simple deadfalls and tripwires, mechanical stuff, but I don't have the training to find magical traps, I'm afraid. And given the state of these ruins, those are the most likely kind to have stuck around. I'm also no good on the 'resisting electricity' front, though I can try and develop a power for that. I do have one other trick that bears mentioning, however."

She holds out a hand with a small crystal in it. The crystal wiggles, then unfurls a series of gossamer-thin threads, which is uses to stand up. The crystal raises one of the filaments, waving to the party. "This is Proactivity, my psicrystal. It is a separate sentient being, a representation of my own drive and motivation. It's durable and small, so I tend to use it to look around corners or distract enemies. If Proactivity is destroyed, it'll reform in about a day."

The crystal hops down from her hand to the ground, then scuttles towards the door that the party intends to enter. It moves oddly, and its legs don't really look strong enough to hold it up.

She looks to the others. "So, that door is trapped, and it might be the kind of trap that resets. How do we want to get past it? I could blast it with sonic energy, but that's an inefficient way to bring a door down."

Ranssyn restrains his urge and doesnt stomp on Proactivity as it beetles past his feet. He glances down with a look of odious disdain as the little gemstone continues to skitter by him on its crystalline insectoid legs.
"What's it with you people and bugs?!" he turns and looks at Xander.

"Well at least her little bug is pretty to look at, and more importantly, It doesn't seem to want to bite me and kill me when it gets near me." with a skeptical concern tone he says to himself ( even though its plenty loud enough for everyone to hear ) "I hope that thing is heavy enough to trip traps"

After Alegri mentions the door might reset and Xander says he'll blast it. He turns and moves over to Julius, and let's the bug lovers deal with blasting the door.

"How you feeling Big guy? Did you say something about Hafgufa speaking to you? uh, What it say?"

Alegri and Xander bring Julius back to consciousness! Then he wands himself and waits for the magic to bring him up another 11hp!

Xander makes a note to detect magic always in all future rooms, yes.

Alegri, uh, waits until Xander has a go at it before sending Proactivity in to trigger the automatic reset proximity trigger 10d6 damage trap (although it could probably Improved Evasion its way out of the damage).

Everybody stands back, and Xander starts pewpewing at the door! The trap goes off a couple more times, zapping through the air, but eventually Xander blows up both the door and the trap.

Alegri, Ranssyn, Xander, and Julius gain 540XP each, Gudrun gains 480XP! By my calculations, Xander and Julius levels up to 4!


Xander scans the room for magic, and detects no more magic.


Beyond the asploded door, a short hallway, ending in a flat wall.

Julius watches Xander's ability to take out doors from afar. He looks at the door to the west, then back to Xander, then to Alegri, then finally on Ranssyn.

Turning to Alegri he says to her in Dunlin, "I raorrae sremd I dmuv ruv su derr srek Crovrems Ovucoraevka. I maad su dmuv sra dekamkeumk uk sra ruuk ra'k em. Com aeui kamd em aeuir vkecraeksor kur o kieceda kekkeum?"


"I really think I know how to kill this Crawling Apocalypse. I need to know if there is actually water in his room and if he's under it. Can you send in Proactivity for a suicide mission and tell us what it sees'?"

Gudrun shrugs and heads towards the apparent dead-end hallway. "I'll look. Why put such a strong trap on a door if there's nothing to guard?"

Before entering the hallway, she casts Detect Magic and scans the hallway for any hidden magical threats. She also looks for any trip wires, hidden doors, or other things out of place. If it looks clear from the doorway, she'll move in to continue investigating.

Ranssyn catches Julius eyeing the western doorway but he is uncertain of Julius's intent. None the less, Ranssyn moves over to the west doorway, but pauses before he reach it as he calls over his shoulder.
"Didnt you buy a map from ol'one eyed Xinosh telling us what might be hanging out in certain areas? any idea what might be here?"he says as he points to the west door with Melinda.

Concerning the trapped door in front of an empty hallway, Alegri narrows her eyes. "Feels like there's probably a secret door. I can't do the weird throwback-dwarf thing where they just know if stonework is hiding something, but I can look around this hallway and see if I find anything. Might take a while, if we want to be thorough."

She sends Proactivity into the new dead-end hallway, directing it to walk both on the ground and the walls to check for illusions or proximity-based traps.

To Julius, she narrows her eyes, considering. "Haudu, nānu adannu māḍabahudu. Ādare ondu dina nanna maitrigaḷalli ondannu dūra eseyalu nānu oppige modalu svalpa heccu tiḷiyabēkāgide." She clears her throat. "Also, while I appreciate the foray into my native tongue, isn't it a little rude to use a language that everyone doesn't understand?"

I could do that, yes. But I would need to know a little more before I agreed to throw away one of my allies for a day.

"I'm not trying to prevent them from hearing us. I'm hoping the kraken doesn't know Dinlun." Julius taps a staff made of twisted locust wood, with dark spots resembling crawling insects that he has had strapped to his bag. "Staff of Swarming insects. Summon locusts in a confined space. Stand back and wait. We just need to know what the room looks like."

Finally Julius glances briefly at your henchman, as he pulls out Xinosh's map to show you it, "If it works, I'd want to control the narrative of how we beat this thing. Something heroic, good for our reputation."

Alright, I see what you're thinking. I don't think that kraken have any abilities that would allow them to destroy swarms, but they're intelligent creatures, so anything is possible. Still, it's relatively low-risk, high-reward. I'm in.

Proactivity skitters into the cracked-open door on its filament legs, sending back a constant chatter of information to Alegri about everything it can perceive inside.

At first Ranssyn didn't have a clue to what the mongrelman and lil Stout where debating About in some crazy language, but, when Julius started making hand gestures it.well..it still didn't help Ranssyn to understand what they were saying, but he did notice when Julius tapped his ear and point at the door which Ranssyn knew exactly what that meant.
Ransynn stopped moving and stood a few feet away from the ajar door. As the bugged-legged gem quietly skittered through the crack of the ajar door, Ransynn readied Melinda for anything that tried to bust through the door to attack them.

Gudrun detects no magic in the dead-end hallway! Nor does she find any things of note there at all!


Proactivity, on the other hand... does find a secret door! It's the back-side of a secret door, so it's a bit easier to find than the front-side, but the psicrystal pokes a loose stone and the door shifts and opens ajar!


Then Proactivity is sent to the western door! A zig, a zag, a brief glimpse of a vast room containing an only-slightly-less-vast betentacled monstrosity! A desiccated, mummified kraken of prodigious proportions!

There is no water, no. Graffiti on one wall in dwarfish, which is similar enough to Dinlun that Alegri can read that it says <I SLEPT WITH YOUR SISTER>. Scattered debris that's all been thoroughly crushed. But no water.

And that's all Alegri gets before Proactivity is walloped by a tentacle for 31 damage and Alegri is briefly blinded by the pain of the destruction of her psicrystal.

Alegri sputters and coughs as her psicrystal is destroyed, the psychic feedback snapping across her consciousness. She holds still for a moment, then shakes her head slowly. "No... no water."

She remembers herself, then continues in Dinlun. "Tyi gsegit va'il liid lnoirg aet yael ryedmis. Tyisi ael ta' zenis, yi'l qoiln laennaetk aet nyisi. Wi lya'oirv oitriely nyi ra'roiln lzesd etv nyit voin la'di vaelnetri minziit oil etv nyen sa'a'd, qoiln aet reli."

She looks to the rest of the party, then motions back toward the safer, already-cleared areas of the dungeon. "We should be prepared to get away from this area."

The kraken does seem stuck in his chamber. There is no water, he's just sitting in there. We should unleash the locust swarm and then put some distance between us and that room, just in case.

Mildly annoyed that she couldn't find the secret door but the psicrystal could and even more annoyed that everyone isn't speaking in Common, Gudrun walks back to the group and replies to Xander. "Hard to tell what we're doing or plan accordingly when half of us are speaking in some garbage tongue."

Julius ignores Gudrun and instead begins jotting notes down of the dimensions of the room from what Alegri communicates to him. He doesn't say much other than, "I'll need to think on it. Let's wait until Proactivity returns."

Julius stares at his notes for about a minute before saying absent mindedly, "Alegri you want to see if you can find any mechanical traps on the secret door and then Ranssyn can open it; take us into Grell turf."

Alegri frowns at Julius. "Proactivity won't be returning until I can make a new one, tomorrow. It was smashed by a giant tentacle. Now, are we going to do the thing, or not? I think it will work. You'll just have to get a bit close."

She turns to walk to the secret door Proactivity had previously discovered. "And for the record, it hurts like hell to have your psicrystal smashed like that. Consider it a show of good faith on my part." She slowly searches the door for traps, though the fact that the psicrystal had already nudged it open left her confident that there were none.

She'll take 20 for a 24 searching the backside of the secret door. She won't touch it, naturally.

Ranssyn steps away from where he was standing and moves further in toward the group, as moves he turns toward Julius and Alegri flashing a disgruntled sneer and says with his usual loud tone
"Gudrun aint wrong. If you two keep jabbering everything in gibberish, the rest of us are going to be as confused as a drunk in a round room looking for a corner to piss in. So what exactly are we doing?" after saying his peace, he positions himself in a spot where he can keep watch for any threats while Alergri checks the area for traps.

The brute suddenly loses it and begins pointing towards the Kraken several times over and over again while mouthing SHUT UP; he then he finally shouts, "How many gestures I gotta give ya'll to shut your frakkin' mouths!? We made a plan five seconds ago..." Julius holds up five huge fingers for dramatic effect. The position of his hand looks as if he might back hand someone. "...Xander checks door for magic. Alegri searched door. Ranssyn opens door. We kill Grells. A'ight!? A'IGHT?! Ya'll want me to write it down and nail it into my forehead so in's the next thirty seconds you don't ask me again!?"


It would seem with him merely mouthing "shut up" and pointing at the Kraken, that the rest of his speech may have been purposely dramatic. Although he does look really angry; hard to tell. As he's grown he seems to be having a harder and harder time controlling his temper.

After the area is checked, Ranssyn moves over and opens the door, and takes a few steps inside. He doesn't go too far just enough to allow those that have been checking for traps and magic to get in and start searching ahead. He walks with those checking the area almost like a guard he keeps Melinda at the ready for any incoming threats that might advance on them.

Turns out, with the description from Alegri, Xander can deduce pretty much all the things there are to know about the Crawling Apocalypse (and therefore has my permission to consult the statblock in Sandstorm). Basically, it's all the things a kraken can do plus all the things a mummy can do. So, a ton of natural attacks that do respectable damage, and some of them spread mummy rot. This one is probably Advanced from the basic creature.

It can move from its spot (but not out of the room), it can attack around one corner (blindly, so 50% miss chance and whatnot), it can't hurt swarms that have weapon immunity, but there are very few kinds of swarms that will bother to attack undead creatures. None of the Staff Of Swarming Insects swarms will.

Also, ironically for Julius: as this was a dwarven complex, if the creature was created by the dwarves, it is much more likely to understand the rudiments of Dinlun than it is to understand Common. But then Xander thinks no, it was probably created by ancient humans and simply trapped here by the dwarves (somehow), and therefore may understand some ancient human language (but still not Common).


Flawed Paragon (Ex): At 3rd level, a mongrelfolk paragon gains the ability to take additional traits and flaws. You are no longer limited to only one trait and two flaws, and you are no longer limited to taking these only at first level. Instead, you may have a total number of traits and flaws equal to your hit dice. You may gain an additional trait or flaw each time you gain a new hit die. Each time you gain a new flaw, you gain a new feat to go with it.
Flawed Paragon is a very powerful ability, but it is not unlimited. You may only take one trait or flaw each time you level up, to a total maximum of your HD in traits+flaws. You're trying to violate both those clauses.

The backside of the secret door, as it transpires, has no traps that Alegri finds.

Beyond the ajar secret door, Alegri can see: a room with a deep pit within! A section of wall in a passage to the northwest partially collapsed and rubble strewn about! A bladey pendulum hanging down from the ceiling, a trap already triggered and not reset. And, a monster!

This creature appears to be a giant cricket, about the size of a dog. Chilling in the middle of the room. It detects the party, goes first, chirps deafeningly (nobody can hear anything but chirping as long as it is chirping), charges in to attack Alegri, misses, and gets cut down by Ranssyn Melindaing it.

Everybody gains 30xp each.

Once together, Xander whispered what he knew about the crawling apocalypse.

“It’s stuck in that room,” Xander said, “if we knock down this twisty turn, we’ll be able to stand back and hit it from far away. Unfortunately I don’t think the bugs will care about it, as it’s undead.”

Alegri considers everything about the mummified kraken, frowning slightly. "It seems pretty risky, to be honest. The ability to paralyze us all, potentially, coupled with magical powers, and the fact that there are various monsters that might be drawn to the sound of a prolonged fight..."

She shrugs. "I think there might be easier fish to catch right now. I'm not sure the risk is worth the reward."

Julius clearly is angry that his plan wasn't going to work but he doesn't say anything. He just says through gritted teeth, "Grells."

Still angry, while the party does their now normal search routine (Xander uses detect magic, Alegri takes 20 on the doors) Julius will see if he can see the bottom of the pit. If he can't he'll light a torch and drop it in there.


I wasn't sure if swarms did damage to undead so I had asked in the RAW question thread where they (or at least someone) answered yes. I think it's a logical conclusion that they don't do damage to undead. I should have just asked you.

Ranssyn cleans the cricket guts off Melinda's Blade as he listens to Xander explain all he knows about the ginormous undead squid. His facial expression shifts and squirms showing his distaste of the idea of trying to clash with this undead behemoth. Ranssyn nods in agreement when Alegri expresses her similar feelings and once Julius says Grells, a mixed expression of relief and excitement washes over Ranssyn face. "Those lightning sticks were worth a good bit. Let's go get us some coin. "

Gudrun's mood evaporates once Xander starts spilling details. Her eyes unfocus as she considers the options. "The new mong...Alegri...has a good point. If it can't leave that room, we can clear the areas around it before taking it head-on. Perhaps the beholder has some fire magic we can use to roast it from a distance."

She turns and addresses Julius directly. "What's the bounty on the Kraken again? We don't want to spend more than we'll earn disposing of it if we decide to do so."

She nods to Ranssyn and move to follow him. "Grells then."

Grumbling he simply states, "Besides the reputation, the reward is anything in the king's armory. There was second bounty that wanted a dagger in the king's armory. So we could get that dagger for a tome of clear thought. I know Ranssyn ain't interested in a book. But it's a book worth thirty thousand gold pieces. Perhaps' that kraken was squattin' on something valuable too. Proactivity didn't seem to see nothin'."

? I judge the latter set more specific, but it's plausible to read it the other way 'round.


The party ventures into the next room! Julius peers down the pit, and can see a dimly-illuminated-by-fire bottom, about 100 feet down.

None of the doors in the room radiate magic. The party does, however, find another journeyman's key and item #41 a finely crafted trident that radiates magic!

The tiefling woman shakes her head. "Not yet. Let's see what this trident can do." She picks up the trident and gives it a test heft, seeing if any of its properties are detectable just by holding it. Assuming she comes up empty on that front, she'll take it into the previous room and give it a test throw to see how it behaves.

Gudrun notices that the trident shimmers slightly with a faint sort of gunmetal blue hue. When she chucks it and stabs with it a few times, its aim turn out to be slightly truer, and it chips off slightly more rock, than a normal trident would.

Julius takes the second journeyman's key and chats a bit while Gudrun uses the Trident.

"I can fly, but not bout' to fly down there now. There are stairs back in the monster repellent room that go down. We never really even thought about going down deeper into the earth." Julius says...

"I can identify it tomorrow morning Gudrun, it's probably just the basic enchantment, you want to hold onto it till then?" Julius says.

Otherwise Julius will point at the closed, locked, or jammed door to the west and tell Ranssyn, "Grells should be that way."

As it transpires, the door to the west is only closed, not locked or trapped or magical, so the party does its searching and detecting and whatnot and turn up nothing. Then they advance through the door, Ranssyn first!

Beyond, as Julius has been predicting nonstop this whole time, are three beaky tentacley brainy grells!

Also, some more collapsed wall and rubble, a slightly sunken area not even worth depicting on the map, bloodstains, and some graffiti in Infernal: Gudrun can translate <MISTER HAPPYPANTS WILL HAVE YOUR SOUL> -- Xander has actually heard of Mister Happypants, a devil of tremendous notoriety in the planes.

Meanwhile, the grells cwarwk and prepare for battle!

Before the door opens, Alegri asks the group to wait for her to act before charging in.

Once the door opens, she focuses on a spot just behind the grell. There is the sound of a sharp chime, and then an explosion of vibrantly purple amethyst sprays out from behind the grell, showering them with sharp stones. The stones shatter into dust on contact with the surfaces around them.

Manifests Amethyst Burst, 20ft radius, to hit as many grell as possible and no party members. If that isn't possible by the time Alegri's turn rolls around, she'll do something different (like an Energy Ray).

Ranssyn grits his teeth and adjust his grip on Melinda as he makes a decision to use some wolf tactics. Like a circling wolf that barks and bites at it's prey,. Drawing it's attention so it's pack can bite the rear hamstrings, Ransynn begins shouting as he moves in and begins to follow the north wall following it in counterclockwise pattern as tries to circle, but he stops short of passing too close of exposing himself and giving a free shot to the Grell. Instead he slash with Melinda while continuing to shout obscenities.

"COME ON BIRD BRAINS! COME GET SOME! I'M GONNA ENJOY KILLING YA JUST LIKE I DID YOUR BUDDIES!" .

Ranssyn moves in and around, and as it transpires the grell are flat-footed so he doesn't have to worry about how long their tentacles are! Then he Melindas one! It squawks with pain and oozes ichor!
Correct, you haven't rested since the mimic.


Grell 1, to the north, 5' steps to Ranssyn and bites at him and tentacles at him -- ten times! But it isn't magic, so its tentacles can't overcome his DR, and its bite could do up to 1 damage to him but it misses with it. So it squawks furiously as it ineffectually does nothing to him.

Grell 3 helps its buddy, taking aim and zaps at Ranssyn with its lightning lance! It zaps him successfully with a bolt of lightning, and Ranssyn takes 9 electricity damage!


Alegri asks the party to hold on a moment, but Ranssyn barrels in despite her, but she can still hit the three grell and not Ranssyn with a 20' burst by aiming it at the south corner. One grell makes the save for half damage, the other two fail!

Also Jeff moves a bit back out of zapping range.


Grell 2, the one in the center... 5' steps to the east, away from Ranssyn and towards everybody else to guard the doorway well, and shoots its lightning lance at Ranssyn, too! But it misses!


Xander --
They're Aberrations, not Outsiders, so the relevant Knowledge is Dungeoneering, so the result is actually 6 lower. So, probably +4 instead of +5, yes?
-- blasts and hits the center/closest grell! It takes damage, but resists the sickness!


Gudrun moves 10' up -- provoking a tentacle of opportunity, which hits -- Gudrun takes 3 damage, and fails her Fortitude save against the injected paralytic substance, feeling sluggish and then her limbs lock up and she becomes paralyzed for 6 rounds! Sadly, this means she is unable to complete her action.


Julius pegs the center grell with a spear! Taking damage, it doesn't like that one bit, and squawrks at him! Then he draws another spear.

Melikki backs away from the grell.

Ranssyn grimaces as the lance of lightning strikes him. He glances past the beaked brain squid in front of him, as he witnesses Gudrun get attacked and paralyzed. His anger wells up inside of him but he is too tired to surge up any proper type of frenzied rallying attack. He decides that if the crafty wolf tactic is not working, then its time for the direct fierceness of the Lion tactic.

"I'M GOING TO TURN ALL YOU BIRD BRAIN BASTARDS INTO GOO AND SEND YOU BACK TO WHERE EVER YOU COME FROM! RAHAHAHAAA! " .

He screams as he side steps and tries to smash his horns into the one in front of him and then reaches out and slashes with Melinda at the one floating near Gudrun.

Alegri was faced with options, which was good, but troublesome. She could attempt to angle another area blast, but she wasn't confident at this point that she wouldn't hit some of her newfound allies. She could attempt to entangle one of the grell, but given their numbers that was an inefficient option.

So she'd do her best to kill them with raw energy. The question was, which kind? Psionic powers often allowed a choice between heat, cold, electricity, and sonic energy. Heat and cold tended to be more lethal, and the grell used electricity...

"When in doubt," Alegri mutters to herself, "burn them." She points to the nearest grell, frowns, and blasts it with a thin ray of sizzling heat.

Ranged touch attack the closest grell in her line of sight. I've included the -4 for firing into melee without Point Blank Shot. Expending 2pp on Energy Ray. [roll0]

Ranssyn steps east, and attempts to bonk and Melinda the grells! The one grell easily floats out of the way of swinging Melinda, and Ranssyn's horns bounce off the other's natural armor!


The north grell is not a stupid, so it does not 5' step out of Ranssyn's horn reach and into his much more dangerous Melinda reach. It stays where it is while it attempts to lightning lance Ranssyn directly in the face, choosing to risk his horns of opportunity. Again the horns do nothing against the creature's tough hide. The lightning bolt strikes Ranssyn! It penetrates his SR! It deals Ranssyn 13 electricity damage! (By my calculations, this leaves Ranssyn at 1hp.)

The south grell figures its companions have Ranssyn and Gudrun handled, and floats into the doorway to tackle Julius. It tentacles all over Julius: 7 hits, 3 misses. Julius feels stiff for a moment, but resists the paralysis.


Alegri shoots a ray of fire at the grell that just tentacled Julius! It strikes the creature, which sizzles and squawks!


The middle grell, judging Alegri currently the biggest threat, shoots its lightning lance at her! It strikes her with a bolt of electricity, even though it's firing through soft cover! Alegri takes 12 electricity damage!


Xander moves back into sight and critically pzorts the nearest grell with terrible doomy doom doomness! "Unnatural Selection: Double damage or triple damage to aberrations and outsiders." This happens to be an aberration, so the eldritch blast burrows deep into the monster's terrible flesh and it EXPLODES IN A BURST OF TERRIBLE GOOP which showers the proximity -- pretty much just Gudrun -- in horrible ichor. Gudrun is covered in grell guts. This has no mechanical effect, but is extremely gross.


Gudrun is paralyzed!

Julius

Julius bats away the attacks that leave him weak and wobbly but still standing. Then covers his face when the creature explodes, ichor landing all over poor Gudrun. Her slightly open mouth receiving a heapful of Grell goop.

"Ranssyn, better start hitting those things!" Julius shouts unhelpfully as he tosses a shortspear into the fray (and notably not hitting anything). Stepping back as the lightning lances arc down the hallway he hits the deck in order to dive out of the way of the attacks.


Standard: +1 Shortspear [roll0] for [roll1] points of damage. He will target whichever looks the weakest. If Julius can't tell or remember which has been hit the most he'll attack the one fighting Ranssyn as neither Grell has cover in relation to Julius.
Move: Pull out Spear and five foot step backwards
Free: Fall prone to give myself +4 vs ranged attacks (So Touch Ranged AC is now 14 and if I have soft cover from anyone, 18) - Also not sure what you rule is, if falling prone helps my allies target them or not. Or if I still provide soft cover to them if I'm prone).

(If Julius took something like 25 points of damage and just didn't realize it he'll probably move while pulling out his spear to a place they have no line of sight to (Although I didn't think I was in a spot that any of them could full attack me in the first place. I made sure as I didn't want to get full attacked. If he used a move action to get to me, then he can only get one tentacle attack, right?)

Ranssyn

Ranssyn staggers from the electric surge that burns through his body. His body feels numb and tingly as the fetid stink of his own burnt flesh fills his nostrils. The blood vessels in the whites of his right eye must have burst from the cascade of electricity that flowed through his head as his sclera is completely crimson red.

Ranssyn tries to catch his breath and clear his blurry vision. He has felt this before, he knows that death is near and he needs healing, but his allies are in the hallway. He also knows the only thing that seems to be hurting him are the lighting lances and not the tentacles of these beast which might give him the chance to move closer toward the party. Which gives him another idea…

The mad man momentarily stares at the beaked squid, and gives it a blood soaked toothy grin like snarl before saying "I’ll be back for you!".

Then Ranssyn slices with Melinda at the Grell that is blocking the hallway (not the Grell in front of him) before he opens himself to attack by darting off east. Once clear he swings south trying to get into the hallway closer to his allies. As soon as Ranssyn is close to Gudrun and he is about as far as he thinks he can get before the Grells shoot again He dives on the paralyzed Warrior Queen of lightning and uses Gudrun as a human shield from any lightning attacks while saying to the others "I could use a bit of healing.".

Addendum

I'm dumb. I both failed to remember that full attack only happens if you didn't move more than 5' (too much 5e in my meatspace group on Sundays, maybe)(or thought the grell 5' stepped somehow even though it was like ten feet, I dunno), and I forgot to roll for damage because I was so distracted by the much more dangerous roll for paralysis. I could not brain yesterday, I had the dumb. So yes, Julius only took one tentacle to the face, it hit, Julius took 2 damage.

And yes, I'm going to say if you're prone you're not soft cover.

Alegri

Alegri prepares to use a charge of healing from her belt on herself. Just before she does, Ranssyn moves back into the hallway, and make a request for healing.

She weighs her options for a moment, and decides to make the altruistic decision. Well. The decision that appears altruistic, at least. "An apology for earlier," she murmurs as she taps him on the lower back.

If Alegri can safely move and heal Ranssyn, she will. If not, she'll heal herself.

Julius chucks a shortspear and hits nothing! He pulls out a spear, cannot 5' step back because the rubble is difficult terrain but can move back while drawing his spear because he has at least 1 BAB, and flops himself down onto the rubbly ground!


Ranssyn Melindas the hallway-blocking Grell! He does not kill it, but it does reel in the air, seriously injured. Then Ranssyn darts past the Grell, who ignore him because they can't seriously injure him with their tentacles or beaks and elect to save their AoOs instead. Then he, too, falls prone on the rubble.


Grell 1, the one further away, decides... Gudrun's paralyzed but participating by making everybody else hard to hit, Alegri is shooting doom but might run out of juice soon (they recognize what psionics is and how it works) but can potentially also heal (they recognize what a healing belt is and how it works), Julius is doing little but could heal (they recognize a holy symbol when they see one), Ranssyn is almost down but hard to hit physically and hits pretty hard with Melinda, Xander is plunking away with damage but is himself unhurt... In the end, the grell floats 5' east and gently shoves Gudrun over with some tentacles (which I'm ruling as... a move action). She falls prone stiffly. Then it shoots down at Ranssyn! But, rolling a natural 1, it hits the floor instead!


Alegri, recollecting that Ranssyn is hard to heal, heals herself for 9 instead!


Grell 2 performs the same calculations as the other Grell, but also is worse injured and doesn't actually particularly want to be here right now. The two grell squawk and also communicate via invisible electrical fields, and... the other grell successfully gives this one a pep talk, keeping it in the fight! It shoots its lightning lance at... Alegri! But she ducks out of the way.


Xander zoots Grell #2, who, pep talk or no, goes limp, its tentacles dangling free, floating gently up to the ceiling (where, no, it is no longer soft cover). Then he scoots on back around the wall!

What is unnatural selection?In this game, critical hits draw from the critical hit deck (which does make them, on average, more lethal, but this is almost entirely in the PCs' favor because only important characters (i.e., all PCs and any NPC with a name) pull from the deck, unimportant creatures crit normally). Unnatural Selection is the card Xander pulled.

There's a critical fumble deck, too, but instead of triggering on a confirmed natural 1, these trigger on any total roll of 0 or lower (which, again, will tend to hinder foes more than PCs).


Gudrun is still paralyzed for another 4 rounds!

Julius

Julius hops up and chucks his basic spear at the Grell who's thinking that Julius is "doing little." Perhaps the mongrelman is becoming telepathic' or some such thing. Grinning as the spear looks good in flight, he suddenly realizes he's paying too much attention to mental slights he can't possibly know about and not enough attention to his now sudden and complete lack of spears. His grin goes away. Standing dumbly in the hallway he doesn't look like he knows what to do just yet. Although he's making for a big, stupid target for anyone calculatin' that sort of thing.



Move: Stand up from Prone
Standard: Spearranged [roll0]+2 BAB, +1 KD, +1 BAB vs Grell #1 for [roll1] points of damage

Alegri

Alegri is all healed up, and no one around her looks like they're about to die. Satisfied on that account, she fires a slightly weaker energy ray at the closest grell, tuning the beam to heat-based energy. She still has over half of her power left for the day, but she'd prefer to conserve it in case the fight takes a turn for the worse.

Ranged touch attack the closest grell in her line of sight. I did not include the -4 for firing into melee without Point Blank Shot, because I'm not sure if the grell will actually be in melee. Expending 1pp on Energy Ray.

Ranssyn

Ranssyn struggles with the throws of death, but is able to roll in time to dodge the Grell’s deadly attack. As he avoids the attack the blood soaked man through dire hard conscious semi-agonal breathing gives a slight snarl as he notices that no one seems to be going out there way to heal him, even though he has risked his life multiple a couple times for the party in the past. He begins to hear his father’s voice and his old lessons ring in his thoughts as he hangs on to life “Boy, no one will ever love you or trust you. You’re a fool if you think other wise. You’re a Fane and nothing will change that. The Sooner you realize that your alone the better off you’ll be”.
Ranssyn tries to catch his breath and clear his blurry vision. He wants to trust those he travels with but maybe his father is right and trusting people is foolish. He gives one last call out to his party
"HEAL ME! AND I WILL KILL THOS…. . But with his weakened state he cannot finish the rally call before he starts hacking and coughing up blood as he tries to regain his breath and strength.

Julius stands up and chucks his remaining spear, striking the grell in the beak and leaving a denty gash! It clucks angrily!


Ranssyn concentrates on lowering his SR!


The grell steps 5' south and retaliates against Julius, shooting a bolt from its lighting lance! Shockingly, it hits him with a burst of lightning! Julius takes 15 damage!


Alegri zaps the grell, and sets the grell aflame for a moment! It shrieks!


Xander steps back into sight and blasts at the grell -- just missing it, because of soft cover!


Gudrun is paralyzed for another 3 rounds!

The big mongrelfolk decides that healing Ranssyn should be a priority and begins to move forward while pulling out his wand of lesser vigor. As he takes his first step the bolt of lighting hits him in his leg and ya'll watch as the lumbering mongrel's leg sorta goes limp. Julius is able to hop forward a step and then dives into the rubble next to Ranssyn.

The wand glows a faint blue as Julius touches Ranssyn with it. Then Julius spends the rest of the round trying to wake his leg up by banging it on the ground. He's oddly quiet, not really showing emotion. Which is somewhat disconcerting for those of you who know him.


Move: Move forward next to Ranssyn while pulling out a wand of lesser vigor
Free: Fall Prone
Standard: Use a charge to grant Ranssyn fast healing 1 for 11 rounds. Since Ranssyn acts after me this round he goes to 2 hp

Ranssyn
Ranssyn gives a nod of appreciation to Julius when the mongrelman touches him with the wand of healing. Especially after watching him get blasted as he made his way over.
Although still feeling weak, Ranssyn stands and says through gritted teeth
"This Dance ends only two ways squidbeak....“
Ranssyn quickly realizes he wouldn't be able to get to the Grell before it got another shot off, and he shifts his grip and stance into a more defensive posture as he waits for an opportunity to move in. "...Us dead or you dead.“

Julius moves up to Ranssyn, drawing a wand, hits the floor, and pokes Ranssyn with it!


Ranssyn fast heals 1 hp, stands up, and prepares to parry the next attack!


The grell is inscrutable -- does it understand Ranssyn and disagree, or does it not understand him? Eitehr way, it... hm. It appears to not be inclined to bother with the north or west door, and the party is blocking the east. So it... would overrun the party, trying to get all the way through the hallway (which would be easy because Gudrun is paralyzed and prone, Ranssyn can't make attacks of opportunity while under Total Defense, Julius is prone, and Alegri has no melee weapon in her possession, let alone wielded), but apparently you can only overrun once (as a standard action) per round, you can't just overrun an unlimited number of foes. But you can Tumble past an unlimited number of foes per round! But the creature, being untrained at Tumble, has a total modifier of -8, and needs to beat three checks with DCs of 25, 27, and 29, so that's out. And the hallway isn't high enough for it to just fly over everybody. You can’t otherwise move through a square occupied by an opponent, unless the opponent is helpless, not even if it can't make AoOs, not even at half speed. So the grell, in the end, has no choice! It notices that both Alegri and Julius are healing people, and Xander is pewpewing and Ranssyn is about to be back in slashy mode, so... hm. Tactically, it has no hope of winning. Xander is uninjured and Alegri is barely injured so it has little chance of one-shotting them into unconsciousness. It could maybe take Ranssyn or Julius down, but probably not kill them. And if it doesn't take down more than one or two of them, the remaining two or three will finish it off. So it's got a grand total of zero tactical options.

It does, however, have one singular spite option. It reaches down paralyzed helpless Gudrun's throat with a spiny tentacle and attempts to pull her heart out through her mouth. Gudrun takes 7 points of damage, but somehow resists being totally murderized, though she does still have a tentacle down her throat.


Alegri delays slightly!


Then Xander... phooey, does not finish the grell off with a frickin' laser beam, because he was trying too hard to not kill his allies.


Gudrun is paralyzed for another 2 rounds!


Next Round (as the outcome of this battle is at this point pretty much foreordained)

Julius delays slightly.


Ranssyn walks up to the grell, lops off the tentacle that's down Gudrun's throat, then lodges Melinda deep in the creature's enormous brainsac. It sprays ichor all over and expires.


Victory!

Alegri and Ranssyn gain 540xp each; Xander, Julius, and Gudrun gain 480xp each. By my calculations, Gudrun levels up to 5!

Somebody pulls the tentacle end out of Gudrun, then her paralysis wears off and she collapses to her knees and very nearly vomits.

Ranssyn fast heals to the tune of another ten hp.

From various bags adorning the grell, the party claims 754.25gp worth of coins and gems, and three lightning lances (with 2, 4, and 2 daily charges remaining).

Julius

Julius watches as Ranssyn finishes off the last Grell. The mongrelman grits his teeth slightly as he hefts himself up. He puts away his wand and limps over to grab his spears. He helps Gudrun to her feet and then helps split the coin and gems.

Julius gives everyone a stern look. He's not looking very happy at the group. Finally he speaks up, "I ain't in the mood to argue with none of ya. Barely beat three of em'. Luck of the gods saved us. We got what we came for, the keys. Let's go turn them in. We're done here for now." He yells at Melikki something in Elvish and begins to limp back the way he came. If you were expecting him to stop at any point you were dissapointed. Melikki sniffs the way making sure nothing is around and Julius follows behind him with one of his magical spears in hand.


Julius splits the coins so that each PC gets, 150 gp, 8 SP, 5 CP. He takes the three lightning lances with the assumption that he's going to sell them and split the loot.



Assuming no random encounters are rolled, Julius is going to make as much progress as he can back towards Endeesy.

Kind of thinking we need to sell our stuff, re-equip ourselves, and decide what we all want to do. I'm leaning towards becoming Guild Master's now that we're turning in the keys.

Ranssyn still feeling badly injured, begrudgingly gives a nod of agreement to Xander when the shifty spider loving caster offers some healing.
"Uh..Sure, I take a bit of it...er...but I swear upon Clan Fane if you try something shifty with your dark spider magic. Melinda will be the last thing you see.“

After Julius berates them, Ranssyn grunts and says "Hey we didnt run away. Those Squid brains did. A wins, a win. Now, Lets head to town and go sell this stuff. I could use a drink and a hearty meal. Maybe find myself a good whore for the night. Wouldnt mind doing a bit of shopping either. I'm thinking I need to get me some better armor or maybe one of those fancy healing belts. Aint real sure, but this last tussle we had proved to me that I need something.“

ACTIONS:
Ranssyn Follows Julius's leads as he takes the group back to town, to sell, and regroup.

Central Caves

Xander heals Ranssyn for 11, leaving him at (by my calculations) full hp!

On the one hand, it's probably perfectly plausible to head through the doors to the west and then head southwesty until they hit the mines where they came in. On the other hand, it's not guaranteed that that's possible. So the party backtracks southeast through Xinosh's trading post (bartering some more if they so desire), then southwest back to the safe room with the orb and the magic teleportation circle (where they can offload some loot to Mario if they so desire), and then heads due west from there.

...Huh. Now that you've explored, you know there's only two rooms between the safe room and the mines. And, as it transpires, both those rooms are currently empty of creatures. So the party heads out through the mines!

The mines, having previously been cleared by many other adventurers, offer no resistance.

The party emerges blinking and dazzled into the daylight!


Gus

It's ten miles from the Tiv-Beckett Cold Iron Mines to the city of Endeesy! The party sets out over the Home Road through cornfields and scattered farmhouses!


A few miles in, a puff of gas strikes Ranssyn in the face, and his limbs become briefly stiff before he shakes it off!

Glancing around, the party spots: a plant! I mean, lots of plants. But one that's moving against the wind and winding up to shoot another gas spore.

This strange plant appears to have all its roots above ground, supporting a body of a cluster of narrow, triangular fronds that grow to about a foot off the ground. Bright red berries and small blue and white flowers are scattered throughout the fronds.

Julius identifies this as a ciruja plant, which is known to eat years. Gudrun furthermore knows that this plant fires gas spores that paralyze, and then it moves to its paralyzed prey and digests their lifespan. Xander furthermore knows that the poison gas spheroids can be harvested from a dead ciruja plant and used like grenades, but the spheroids remain potent only for 6 hours, so it's barely worth it.

Moreover, the creature doesn't have great AC or very many hp and missed with its second gas spheroid, so the party pretty much gets together and hacks the plant to pieces and asplodes it and whatnot before it gets a third go.

Alegri and Ranssyn gain 180xp each, Xander and Julius gain 160xp each, Gudrun gains 150xp!


On the rest of the road to Endeesy, the party encounters nothing but rats and squirrels and sparrows and pigeons.

Julius

It seemed far shorter of a walk back to town than it had been getting here. Julius walked with a limp, slowing his speed down somewhat. However, he moved with a purpose and shrugged off any offer of healing with a negative grunt. When he was hit in the face with the poison, Julius didn't so much as slow down. Striding up with the rest of the group to perform some weed control along the Home Road.

Once in town, Julius continued to the Adventure's Guild. Limping into the bar he straightened up and approached the bar. Julius....stank. Blood, ozone, mimic slime, plant goop, centipede gunk, and other various grossness covered the mongrelman.

"I'd like to join the Adventure's Guild." Julius said with a poorly worn diplomatic smile and 25 gold pieces placed on the counter.

After joining the guild Julius will then place just one of the keys on the counter.

"Journeyman's Key" Julius says, stating the obvious.
