The Celestial Compendium

Avacyn, Angel of Hope, by Howard Lyon

"I'm not a philosopher, Harry," he said. "But here's something for you to think about, at least. What goes around comes around. And sometimes you get what's coming around." He paused for a moment, frowning faintly, pursing his lips. "And sometimes you are what's coming around."
Michael Carpenter
Grave Peril, by Jim Butcher

I have been meaning to get around to doing this for eons, but it seems I always put it off. Honestly, I am surprised no one (to my knowledge) has done this yet! In this compendium, I will be collecting as much D&D 3.5 content concerning Celestials as I can, including classes that turn you into a celestial or otherwise. It is a bit messy for now, so please spare me a little grace. If I miss something, please let me know!

Introduction

The Outer Planes that celestials call home foster an astounding variety of good creatures. Despite their great diversity, all celestials unite to battle fiends from the infernal realms or to assist lost travelers[.]

Guardinals (neutral good) and eladrins (chaotic good) are invariably creatures of great beauty, though their appearances vary. Creatures they've helped on the Material Plane sometimes refer to them simply as "angels."

Paladin being my favorite class, I am naturally drawn to "angels" in Dungeons & Dragons. Despite being a big part of the mythos, however, they really do not offer much player support when it comes to actually playing one. There are a variety of awesome Outsiders that come with powerful abilities, but they all come at relatively high costs and are not all considered to be "Celestials."

What makes a Celestial? Well, if you trust the Forgotten Realms wiki, Celestials are primarily Angels, Archons, Guardinals, or Eladrins. "Other races of celestials included couatls, pegasi, lillends, unicorns, asuras, bariaurs, ki-rin, einheriar, moon dogs, and hollyphants."1 (https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Celestial) It is not a far stretch to assume most Good (capital G) Outsiders are considered Celestials, as there are a variety of Celestial creatures that are simply mundane creatures with a template applied to them.

In this guide, I will do my best to assemble as many of these Celestials as I can, focusing primarily on the ones listed above and leaving out things like a celestial hippopotamus or what-have-you.

Special Thanks

Before I get on with the entire handbook, I have to give thanks for a couple of Playgrounders who helped me out or inspired me to finally do this, whether they know it or not.

HeadlessMermaid (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?55500-HeadlessMermaid): I have never spoken to you, but my handbook is very much based on the format (and name!) of your Fey Compendium (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?226612-3-5-The-Fey-Compendium), which I have utilized countless times. I also have to thank you for formatting the abbreviation list from the monster index (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/lists/monsters).
UnseenMage: (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?75607-unseenmage) This would have taken me infinitely longer without the help of your "Lists of Every Playable Monster by ECL (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?401132-Lists-of-Every-Playable-Monster-by-ECL)" index. This is another staple thread for me and I love it.
Anyone who has input! I am by no means able to catch everything that has existed in D&D relating to celestials, so a preemptive thanks is due to any and all who help me compile information for this handbook.

Contemplative (Complete Divine) - Type Changes to Outsider (Native)
Divine Agent (Manual of the Planes) - Type Changes to Outsider native to the deity's home plane, thus Good is (Good)
Divine Disciple (Player's Guide to Faerûn) - Type Changes to Outsider (Native)

Troubadour of Stars (BoED) - Type Changes to Outsider (Native)

Infused Warrior and Infused Spellcaster (both in Dragon #321) - doesn't change to Outsider, but makes more and more alike in body-parts and SA/SQ

3.0 version of Shining Blade of Heironeous (Dragon #283) gave Celestial Creature template at capstone

Special mention - Risen Martyr (BoED):
A 10th-level risen martyr is as close to celestial perfection as a mortal creature can be.
He is considered a celestial for the purpose of any spell or effect that has special effects on celestials. If he is lawful, he is also considered an archon. If he is chaotic, he is also considered an eladrin. If he is neutral, he is also considered a guardinal. If he is a spellcaster, he can cast spells that have the Celestial, Archon, Guardinal, or Eladrin components, as appropriate.Unfortunately, at the very same level...
When a 10th-level risen martyr has earned enough experience points to gain his next level, his perfected, spiritual body is taken whole into the upper planes.
A risen martyr cannot advance in any class other than risen martyr in order to delay his final ascension. Once he rises and adopts this prestige class, he must continue to gain risen martyr levels and no levels in any other class.

You could also make a note about the difference between summoning an avatar of a celestial and calling one down to do your bidding in person.

With a word edgewise about the Summoning Individual Monsters Variant rule from DMG page 37 where you summon the same avatar over and over and IIRC you can even find it's real self and give them equipment and stuff to make them more effective. Think Lucy from Fairy Tale.

In stark contrast to the archdevils of Hell, the seven paragons of Celestia (sometimes referred to as “tome archons” by scholars from the Material Plane) are utterly without jealousy, envy, or pride.

I did not add this because I am very paranoid about linking Wizards' content from an outside source. There are a few sources that the mods prefer we do not link and I do not want to ruin all my hard work haha. Then don't link it; just list the "Source" as "D&D Miniatures: Desert of Desolation". I am... not very good at summoning mechanics and D&D. Can you explain this to me so I can accurately add it?

Thanks for this. This is handy to have.

Rules Compendium on summoning: "A summoning spell instantly brings a creature or object to a place you designate. When the spell ends or is dispelled, a summoned creature is instantly sent back to where it came from, but a summoned object isn’t sent back unless the spell’s description specifically indicates this. A summoned creature also goes away if it’s killed or if its hit points drop to 0 or lower. It isn’t really dead. It takes 24 hours for the creature to re-form, during which time it can’t be sum- moned again.
When the spell that summoned a creature ends and the creature disappears, all the spells it has cast end. A sum- moned creature can’t use any innate summoning abilities it might have. It refuses to use any abilities that cost it experience points or would cost experience points if they were spells."

Also there's this explanation (https://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?96872-Where-do-summoned-monsters-come-from-and-what-are-they-doing-before-being-summoned&p=1691742&viewfull=1#post1691742) if it helps.

The basic jist is that summons are just the basic example of a real creature out in the multiverse somewhere. The variant I mentioned upthread allows you to summon the same avatar of a creature over and over. Theoretically even allowing you to go out and find the real creature on the planes and hand it equipment so its avatar is better equipped when you summon it.

Artist's Vengeance and Follower of the Skyserpent (both are from the same article in Dragon #307) - Type Changes to Outsider ("Lillend Apotheosis" and "Couatl Apotheosis" capstone CF)

Also, I'm pretty sure Divine Agent don't get (Native), so any Blasphemy will kick them out for 24 hours

I see. So you would add a note that says something to the effect of: "When summoning a specifical celestial, you could theoretically equip it so that when it appears it is much stronger than originally intended."

Saints are referenced as being earthly celestials and are outsider (native) just like half-celestials.
