Eli Moore had always considered himself normal. Average family with him as the only child. Average grades in high school, decent at sports. Got into state college, played on the football team as second string. Moved to the city and got a job as a personal trainer at one of the Crossfit gyms. A small apartment. A simple life.

Then the quarantine happened. The gym closed. So did just about everything else for that matter. He was getting unemployment, which was more than enough to get by. No car meant no car payment or insurance. His friends used to laugh at him for biking everywhere, but it just paid off. Stuck in his apartment, he had begun to go stir-crazy. Everything on the television was terrible, so was social media. He couldn't work out, he couldn't work. He needed an outlet.

After reaching the end of the internet several times over, he had started watching some of the e-sports streams. It was about the only 'sport' that hadn't been cancelled. Eli was surprised how intense it could get. He had never even owned a home computer, just a phone and tablet. Still, it looked like something to do. So when his stimulus check came, he ordered one of those fancy gaming systems and the most anticipated game.

It all came quicker than he expected. Everything was suppose to be going so slow with the shutdown. Boxes, wires, manuals... an organized chaos of electronics. The result seemed pretty good. Nothing like those streamers had set up, but he thought it was pretty respectable.

Firing up the game resulted in a massive load screen, there seemed to be plenty of updates since the release. Bugs It wasn't any different than when he had first got his phone. It updated like 14 times in the first day. He went out and got food while it did it's thing. When he got back, the account number prompt was flashing. He entered the info and walked through the registration.

Character generation. He had flipped through the game guide while eating. The choices were a bit overwhelming to someone who had never played a game like this before. He stuck with the guide's suggestion. Warrior. The character features came up next. It was easy to just make it look like him. Blonde, tall, athletic. Human. The next part gave him pause. A name. He couldn't think of anything clever. His knowledge of anything fantasy related ended at the Lord of the Rings movies. To be honest, he hadn't even finished those. Maybe just mixing up his own name, since the program seemed to deny any attempts at those crazy names like 'Leetsauce' or 'Pwnstar'. He settled on Moeril.

The game finally launched. Eli put his drink on the desk and pushed his chair back far enough to give him some room. The VR direction said about 6 feet of space. He put the headset on. The sensation was overwhelming. He felt almost nauseous at first. Still the introduction was pretty slow and the controls seemed intuitive. Swinging his arms to use a weapon could almost be considered a work-out. Nearing the end the starting area, he had one more quest to complete. Even someone who didn't have experience with these games could tell some kind of boss was coming.

The battle scene was intense. He was spinning and dodging and striking. It was fun! Lost in the virtual reality, Eli had completely forgotten about real reality. The reality where he had put his large glass of water on the desk. The reality where he hit said desk with his foot, causing the water to spill and drip down onto the computer case and tile floor. The results were electrifying. Arcing and sparking, convulsing and collapsing. Eli had no idea any of it had occurred. Like some unexplainable freak accident from the Final Destination movies. The monitor that covered his eyes had gone blue. The blue screen of death. Coding flooded the screen as he finally came to, seeming to scroll down endlessly. Until it didn't. As suddenly as it had all happened, his vision was cleared and he was looking up at the game sky from his back. The gnoll boss lay dead next to him.

The blue screen slowly fades, and you find yourself unable to open any menus. You can't seem to reach up and remove your headgear either. You start to panic as everything begins to grow cold. "Cold as the grave," passes through your mind, making you tremble slightly in fear.

Suddenly a popup message fills your vision.

Ş̸̧̟͕̙̪̋͌̎̒̽͛̏̏̐͜͝ý̸̩̼̫͚͕̺̱̫̽̓̈́̄͌̒̄͗́s̸̀̄̀̈́̄̎̓̚͝ ̡̡̺̜̜̬̺̟̞ṱ̸̨͑̃e̸͙̹͗̊ͅm̷̻̭̱̲̣̮̾́̊̍̽̂͝ ̶̧̢̩̲̙̣̳̩͓̞̎Ë̷͈̩̥͍̮͔́̈̑̓̒̑̚͘͝ͅr̵̨̖̖͇̤̘͖͉̘͒̌ͅr̶̛̻̀͂ ̘̩ǒ̴̡̩̫͚͚̝͉̭͆̂̚r̸̨͕͙̘̜͊͑̇͐̃͠

It blinks out and returns again.

Ş̸̧̟͕̙̪̋͌̎̒̽͛̏̏̐͜͝ý̸̩̼̫͚͕̺̱̫̽̓̈́̄͌̒̄͗́s̸̀̄̀̈́̄̎̓̚͝ ̡̡̺̜̜̬̺̟̞ṱ̸̨͑̃e̸͙̹͗̊ͅm̷̻̭̱̲̣̮̾́̊̍̽̂͝ ̶̧̢̩̲̙̣̳̩͓̞̎Ë̷͈̩̥͍̮͔́̈̑̓̒̑̚͘͝ͅr̵̨̖̖͇̤̘͖͉̘͒̌ͅr̶̛̻̀͂ ̘̩ǒ̴̡̩̫͚͚̝͉̭͆̂̚r̸̨͕͙̘̜͊͑̇͐̃͠

That disappears and then once more, a popup fills your vision.

Welcome, Player!
You have been selected as worthy to remake yourself anew!
Do you accept this offer?
| Yes | No |

The popup closes, a second taking its place.

Warning!
This action will delete your current character, forcing you to restart at level 1.
Do you wish to continue?
| Yes | No |

The popup closes, as a third popup appears.

Final Warning!
Note that this action cannot be reversed.
Are you ready to leave your life behind and enter a new realm?
| Yes | No |

You awake from the game just long enough to remove your gear and realize you are dying.

Game Over

System error. Oh man, did I break something? I just started.

Bugs. Something had glitched out. Eli had seen a few videos of people making games do crazy things. Most of the time it was on purpose, but doing it for the first time was probably an accident too.

Once the prompt appeared, he gave a sigh of relief and selected the Yes. The second Yes didn't give him any hesitation either. Why not, he had only been playing for maybe an hour.

A third prompt. He hadn't had this many attempts at changing his mind since the time he cancelled DirectTV. The wording seemed a little strange, but this was a virtual roleplaying game. Maybe it was just trying to set the mood. Eli selected Yes a final time and waited to see what would happen.

Pain courses through your entire body, pain which should be blocked or at least reduced by the game's pain filters. You have them set to minimum, after all.

The taste of rainbows fills your ears as the sensation of being turned inside out and sucked through your toes overwhelms your senses, causing you to black out.

You awake an unknown period of time later and find yourself numb, completely unable to feel your body. Your ears hear nothing, and only a black emptiness meets you as you try to open your eyes.

Just as panic begins to set in, a popup appears. You feel relief at knowing that you're still in the game. You attempt to open a menu to determine your status, but nothing happens. The popup vibrates at you, as if somehow angered that you're ignoring it.

Welcome to your New Life+
Click below to begin character creation.
| Below |

You find yourself unable to do anything but interact with the popup mentally, just as you would with any popup in the game.

After clicking the button, a series of numbers, symbols, and random words fly across your vision faster than you can read. You feel an almost intrusive sensation in your mind, as if someone or something is peering deep within.

Suddenly, a visual representation of dice scatter across your screen. The final result of each becoming large enough to fill your vision for a brief second.

Congratulations!
You have received one [1] Minor Boon.

Please choose your race.

A representation of the major races appears standing nude in front of you. Or rather, you see yourself in front of you, slightly altered to appear as each of the major races. A hazy line of individuals stretching off into the distance, which you intuit to be subraces that would be available for selection after making your choices.

Your available choices are

Human
__
Elf
__
Lizardfolk
__
Orc

There is a pair of buttons hovering in front of each which reads

Select Race Information

Almost obscured near what you would expect to be the floor, if such a thing existed, are two nearly invisible buttons which read

Apply Minor Boon to Race

There is no further information about the two buttons, nor do you notice any button related to the Least Perk.

Before you click anything, you feel a foreboding sensation that any and all choices you make at this time will be permanent.

Ugh... why did that hurt so much? I really must have broken something not even the standard settings for beginners was saved.

Eli cringed as the dice appear and disappear. Oof, man that's a terrible random generator.

Eli looked over the choices, knowing next to nothing about any of them. He assumed they were all the same as his previous character choices, but he hit information just to be sure.

While human was the safe bet, he couldn't help but be drawn to the idea of a lizardfolk. Scales and armor seemed like a great combination. That button hiding on the bottom by the feet was also interesting. The original game had made selections of things stand out so they wouldn't be missed.

Human
Humans are the most common race through most of the realm. They are far more adaptable than any other; however, they tend to have poor relations with the non-human races.

Elf
Elves are the longest lived mortal race in the realm. They have a trace of fey blood in their veins, which leads them to be chaotic and haughty. All elves must select a subrace. While elves tend to get along well with members of other humanoid races, they are almost always hostile towards other elven subraces.

Lizardfolk
Lizardfolk are thought to be, in some way, descended from dragons. Although that is many, many generations past, if true at all, they take pride in their heritage. They are an industrious people known for building massive cities in the jungles and plains of their homelands and for having a fiery temper that often leads to war.

Orc
Orcs are thought to be brutish thugs, but that's because most orcs encountered by other races were driven from their homes for that very behavior. Orcs have less developed industry than most other races, as they tend to prefer to honor the old ways and live as one with the land.

Deadguy
2020-07-12, 02:56 PM
Yeah, I think the lizards look cool! The description made his choice even easier.

Eli mentally selected the little hidden option at the bottom of the feet and then selected the reptilian race.

Rizban
2020-07-12, 06:46 PM
Just to be clear, are you applying your minor boon to race?

Deadguy

Yes. Sorry, I could have been clearer on my post

Rizban
2020-07-12, 07:58 PM
When you spend your minor boon, the races available to you become fuzzy before returning with only the slightest tweaks to them. You feel a sense of loss as your minor boon is consumed, forever gone.

The names of the races all now have very small plus signs after them.

You select Lizardfolk+, and all of the race representations disappear. You are presented with the choice to select a heritage, showing you precisely two options.

Scaled One
__
Dragonkin

There is a pair of buttons hovering in front of each which reads

Select Heritage Information

The button which denoted your minor boon is gone.

Deadguy
2020-07-12, 10:16 PM
That might as well be Latin... Eli hit the information button and hovered over the choices to see each description.

Rizban
2020-07-12, 10:48 PM
Scaled One
Lizardfolk arose through an interbreeding of the amphibious Scaled Ones and the Dragons. Your Scaled One heritage runs strongly in your veins, giving you many traits of amphibians, including the ability to eventually metamorphose into a greater form.

Dragonkin
Lizardfolk arose through an interbreeding of the amphibious Scaled Ones and the Dragons. The blood of dragons flows strongly within you, giving you access to innate magics and the ability to grow only stronger with advanced age rather than more frail.

Deadguy
2020-07-13, 08:22 AM
Oh man, this is hard. Scaled Ones sound like they go through evolution, and Dragonkin are like Clint Eastwood, just getting more awesome with age...

Eli pondered for several moments before selecting Dragonkin. Can't go against Clint in the end.

Rizban
2020-07-13, 10:46 AM
As soon as you touche the button for Dragonkin, the Scaled One representation disappears. You find yourself able to customize the appearance of the Dragonkin Lizardfolk to you liking, including changing the sex.

When you're finished, your point of view shifts instantly, and you find yourself in the character you just shaped. You once again have feeling, the numbness gone. However, you still feel weightless in the black nothingness around you.

An extremely sparse character sheet appears in your vision. (Link sent to you via PM)

You find yourself able to fill in a few minor blanks. You also have 2 points to spend on your ability scores, increasing any chosen score by 1. However, you can't assign more than 1 point to the same ability.

Deadguy
2020-07-13, 11:07 AM
Eli kept the sex matching his own. It just felt strange to change it. He adjusted the height and weight until achieving a large muscular frame. The white scales seemed most appealing, especially with the addition of blue highlight patterns available in the customization. There wasn't any kind of information regarding how old the race lived, only that they grew stronger with age. He recalled everyone saying his dad was over the hill when he hit 40, so he decided to go with that.

Once that was complete, he tried to recall the character creation from the beginner's guide. He knew strength and constitution were important to a warrior, so he put a point into both.

The name was the hardest part. AGAIN! He wished he could close out of this and open up Google for some kind of draconic search. Without that, he did his best using syllables that he thought a reptilian race might use.

Clicking on all the other blocks of the sheet, he noticed the exp was editable. With a shrug, he tried to change the numbers to 10000.

Rizban
2020-07-13, 01:15 PM
Your attempt to give yourself experience points produces an obnoxious error tone as it resets to zero, and you feel like trying to cheat the XP system again could have negative repercussions.

As you finalize your point distribution, you receive a notification that you will receive 2 points to spend on any ability score at each future level, but you'll always need to spend them on different ability scores.

Your vision blurs again as you are given a choice of classes, basic gear sets appearing before you, representing each class option.

Barbarian
__
Fighter
__
Ranger
__
Sorcerer
__
Warblade

Select Class Information

Deadguy
2020-07-13, 01:19 PM
Hmm... I've already done fighter in the normal game before it broke. I remember sorcerer being all about spells, ranger was about nature and ranged attacks, barbarian was more offensive than fighter... bah, why am I trying to figure this out on my own. Information!

Eli selected the Information button and hovered over each of the classes in turn.

Rizban
2020-07-13, 02:06 PM
Barbarian
A warrior often hailing from a primitive society, barbarians use raw bloodlust to fuel their strength but can quickly exhaust themselves.

Fighter
Skilled combatants, fighters have access to additional feats as most levels. They also have several benefits when performing special maneuvers in combat.

Ranger
At home in the woods, rangers are a type of warrior specialized in the tracking and eliminating of a particular type of target.

Sorcerer
Sorcerers inherit their arcane magic from a powerful magical ancestor. Their magic is literally in their blood. Some sorcerers, however, develop their magic through other means.

Warblade
The warblade was born for conflict. Swift, strong, enduring, and utterly confident in his martial skills, he seeks to test himself against worthy foes.

Deadguy
2020-07-13, 02:14 PM
Despite having no prior attempts at the magic system, Eli was really considering selecting sorcerer. The idea of a dragon-blooded mage seemed really cool. He had been right about the other classes, but paused when seeing the warblade. If I had a coin right now, I'd totally flip it...

A bit unfortunately, he had already put stats in melee combat abilities, but that was fine. Odd numbers bothered him. He recalled the dragonkin get some inherent magic anyway, so he'd have to deal with the system no matter what. Might as well dive in! With that, he selected Sorcerer.

Rizban
2020-07-14, 09:52 AM
You select Warblade, and the starting gear appears equipped on your body. You attempt to change your choice to Sorcerer, but the system had already recognized and processed Warblade, even if the choice confirmation hadn't appeared yet. You did receive a warning that all choices made would be final...

Your character sheet appears again, and begins to fill itself out.

You have the option to select two feats for your first Hit Die. Your choices are any feat you qualify for from the Player's Handbook or Tome of Battle.

In addition, you gain Least Dragonmark (Ray of Frost) as a bonus feat from your race.

Deadguy
2020-07-14, 10:07 AM
That's really annoying... at least the regular game let me go back if I didn't like my choice. Or even start over.

At this point, Eli was all but fed up with the whole process. This was suppose to be something that distracted him from being stuck in the house. Now it felt like he was stuck here too. He decided to just call it a day. He could log back in if he felt like it later to continue.

He reached his hands up to where he believed his head was in order to remove the VR headset.

Rizban
2020-07-14, 10:10 AM
Your hands brush against only rough scales and the raised ridges of your ear canals. The level of detail on the haptic feedback is significantly higher than you thought your VR gloves were able to provide.

Deadguy
2020-07-14, 10:18 AM
Ok... it doesn't matter how it feels. I know the headset is there. Just pull it off.

Eli dug into the sides of the scaled head, trying to drag his hands over where the visor surely was resting. He had taken enough biology in college to know that the nervous system could be tricked.

Rizban
2020-07-14, 10:25 AM
You tug on your face a bit, but the visor doesn't budge. You also feel your fingers digging into you face through where the visor sit, which shouldn't really be possible. It should be blocking your fingers, and the visor itself only gave small puffs of air for haptic feedback.

Rizban

Deadguy
2020-07-14, 10:31 AM
This doesn't make any sense. I'm not even in the game yet. My cheapo VR equipment can't come close to doing this.

Eli was growing frustrated. He looked down at the hands, claws... whatever. He tore at the sides of his head. If he couldn't take the stupid thing off, he'd rip it off!

Why did I ever think playing a stupid video game would be fun?!

Rizban
2020-07-14, 11:02 AM
You make no progress at removing the VR hardware.

System Notice
Please select two [2] Feats to continue character generation.

The system notice seems to somehow have more weight to it now, almost becoming insistent in its request.

Deadguy
2020-07-14, 11:12 AM
Stupid thing can't even follow it's own rules! It says I have claws, why didn't I just cut myself?

He raked a claw across his arm to prove the point before giving a heavy sigh. Why was he raging against a computer program. It was almost funny, considering how many times he had watched videos of kids melting down while playing the game, all while thinking how they lacked discipline and self-control.

Eli opened the feat menu again and made his selections without further fuss. It didn't matter anyway, the program had obviously high-jacked his synapses. It was the only way to explain being stuck, or feeling this type of feedback. He wondered if it was some kind of terrorist or government plot to leave people helpless. Lord knows there were plenty of videos about the virus being manufactured.

A yellow scroll appears before you and unrolls, revealing a floating blue light with wings.

Hey! Listen!
It appears that you are trying to select a feat!
Let me help you with that!

Your vision is filled with a box of slowly scrolling text explaining exactly how to open the feat list and focus on a particular entry for more information. You are unable to skip this painfully slow tutorial, but you are eventually able to select your feats.

You have also gained Personal Assistant as a bonus feat.

Deadguy
2020-07-14, 12:03 PM
Ugh... this is worse than the in-game tutorial I played before, but it doesn't matter. I've got nowhere else I can go, apparently.

Time didn't seem to have much relevance. He was in limbo. So why not just follow along. He attempted to speed up the process by tapping here and there, on the sheet and the orb and the orb's dialog.

He already knew the rookie mistakes to not make. His first character had been a fighter, and he had spent all of his choices in defensive options. It made killing things almost as painfully slow as this tutorial. The only part he focused on was if the choices of feats would remain the same forever, or if other options would be opened as the game progressed. If that was even mentioned at all.

Rizban
2020-07-14, 12:18 PM

A selection of skills appears, and you are informed that you have 16 Skill Points to assign. Clicking through a few of the skills, you discover that the that your skills are the normal selection for a Warblade. You appear to be asking about: Racial Traits

You have been recently reincarnated into the body of a race that is different from your original race.
You are familiar with only the most obvious racial traits and will have to learn more through personal experience or formal education.

You are aware of the following racial traits of the Lizardfolk (Dragonkin):

Ability Scores: Your base ability scores are modified.
Claws: You have a natural weapon and are able to make one claw attack per round.
Dragonmark: You have gained Least Dragonmark (Ray of Frost) as a bonus feat.

You appear to have completed Character Generation.
Please relax, as the transition can be unsettling.

Your character sheet fades from view as you hear dice clattering in the background.

[roll0]

You notice a new ability appearing on your sheet as it fades away.

The assistant let something slip. Reincarnation. This is like the Matrix then... but to be reincarnated, I would have had to die. While in the game. Was that the blue screen and error code.

The dragonkin opened his eyes and stood up, taking in the surroundings for the first time. The entire system, the prompts, the weird saying about death being possible all seemed to make sense once he had heard her say it. Looking down, he took stock of his body. Claws, scales, the feeling of minor magic. Was it dark, could he see clearly even if it was?

He activated the stance to heighten his sense of smell, to help investigate his surroundings.

He opened the character sheet and noticed the Hearthstone and Inspect abilities. "Siri, what were those dice for? And tell me about the Hearthstone and Inspect, please."

You open your eyes and find yourself in a small cave, approximately 20 feet by 20 feet. It looks very much like a basic room in a Dungeon.

Near the center of the room is a shallow pool not quite an inch deep and about two feet across. The faintly glowing water is the only source of light in the room.

A dark tunnel in one wall appears to be the only exit.

Deadguy

Nothing happens until you drink from the pool. Once your thirst is quenched, a small glowing gold buff icon in the shape of an open book appears in the top left of your vision.

You shiver a bit as your scales shift in reaction to the frigid water, but you mostly stay warm. You wouldn't want to be in the water for too long, as it's too cold to be pleasant; however, you determine that you are definitely endothermic and not in any immediate danger from the cold.

Deadguy

The tunnel continues down for about three feet and then turns sharply upwards. After making it past the bend, you see sunlight filtering down from the surface.

As you emerge from the surface of the water, you see a valley opening up before you. You float in a deep pool at the narrowest point of it, right at the foot of the mountains. Running water burbles its way down an almost sheer cliff into this icy cold pool before flowing away as a narrow stream.

The immediate area is filled with rocks which range in size from gravel to stones the size of your head.

In the distance, you see the valley grows broader as it descends from the mountains, becoming quite lush, filled with knee high grass and a few low bushes and shrubs but no trees to speak of.

In the far distance at the end of the valley, you are able to make out the start of a large forest. Your high vantage point reveals that the forest extends farther than you can estimate in every direction not blocked by sheer mountains.

Deadguy
2020-07-17, 05:18 PM
Ssrask climbed out of the pool and gave himself a few moments to warm up on the sun-baked rocks. The woods seemed like the best option for both food and resources, but he also looked up behind him to see if the mountain was indeed impassable.

He made a few scratch marks on a stone close to his pool so he could easily recognize it's location later on. That experience buff would be important to a strong start.

Once he had made his mark, he moved down the rocks carefully, following the stream's flow toward the forest. He kept his Hunter's Senses active while moving. On the lookout for both possible food and threats.

Rizban
2020-07-17, 09:19 PM
The water trickling down the rock face isn't a true waterfall, more just really wet rocks. The cliff face is mossy and crumbling. It looks like it could be climbed, but it would be very difficult to do.

You look for the way back in, but you don't see immediately see it. You know it's there somewhere, and when your eyes finally move across the right spot, the opening is suddenly completely obvious. You don't know how you missed it.

You swim closer to mark the entrance, but you realize you don't really need to it if you choose not to. As long as you are near it, you feel a pull from your bound hearthstone that leads you directly back there without fail. Had you just approached it, you realize that it would be trivial to find. You also suspect that it's going to be nearly impossible for anyone but you to even notice the tunnel exists.

Your blue Starter "Robe" has quickly dried in the sun by the time you're comfortably warm and in danger of dozing off.

Your feet slide some in the scree as you make your way down into the valley, but other than dislodging a few smaller rocks, you have no real trouble finding a way down. The stones are fairly uncomfortable on your bare feet.

The grass is a welcome relief, soft underfoot. Other than a few dragonflies buzzing near the stream, you don't note any other wildlife.

Deadguy
2020-07-17, 10:39 PM
His goal is the forest, or at least a nearby tree suitable for harvesting limbs and firewood. Ssrask removed the robe completely, folding it up and holding it in one claw.

It might be useful as a binding for carrying more wood, but he was a lizard... maybe. He checks his own physique in the sunlight. Lizards did not have exposed reproductive organs, and he thought the digitigrade feet should be able to handle rocks without footwear needed.

Rizban
2020-07-18, 12:59 AM
You are definitely anatomically reptilian, though you idly wonder whether or not others of your kind would still find nudity taboo.

While you have no significant trouble finding purchase on the rocks, the relatively soft scales on your feet don't make walking barefoot on gravel any less uncomfortable.

The grass is a welcome relief, soft underfoot. Other than a few dragonflies buzzing near the stream, you don't note any other wildlife.

Deadguy
2020-07-18, 09:12 AM
As he walked, Ssrask continued to do a self-examination. He inspected his claws first. The sheet said that they did damage similar to a dagger, meaning they were fairly substantial, not just long nails.

He also reached up and felt his teeth. Wear they primarily shaped like a human, or a mammalian predator, or like reptiles. He needed to know his primary food types if he was going to survive in this world.

Continuing to walk, he kept an eye out for bushes with berries or trees that were closer than the actual forest. Having watched a fair bit of survival shows, both real life and video game, he knew the primary goals early on were fire and food.

Rizban
2020-07-18, 06:41 PM
Your claws look much like those of a monitor lizard, sharply curved for hooking into prey and tearing flesh. You think they'd get in the way when trying to use your hands for other tasks, but you find that you can relax a new set of muscles, which allows your claws to fold backwards a bit to use the base of them similar to the way you'd use your fingertips previously. They're definitely going to take some getting used to though.

Your teeth are... unimpressive. Your front teeth are tiny, almost nonexistent, while only your back teeth have any size. Those are still pretty small. All of your teeth are pointed and spaced out quite a bit more than you're used to having (https://wishihadgills.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/8-24-10-019.jpg). These are definitely teeth meant for grasping and swallowing rather than chewing or tearing.

[roll0]

You find a bush with bright red berries on it that looks appetizing enough. You don't think there's enough for a full meal, but you could at least take the edge off if needed.

Deadguy
2020-07-18, 06:51 PM
He gathered up the berries in the robe and tied it together in a makeshift bag. He continued on toward the tree-line. After several minutes of walking, he’d stop to drink from the stream, taking note of how he felt out here during the day.

Lizards didn’t sweat, but he wasn’t cold-blooded, so he had no real idea how his body regulated itself and fluid lose.

After eating his fill of meat and splitting up the party, Ssrask moved toward the stream near the woods.

Killing rabbits to gain strength was the most direct method, except for the bashers. There was no way he could consistently kill those. The math just wasn’t in his favor after looking back on the last battle.

His new plan was to hunt the rabbits from near the stream backs and dive under after an encounter to avoid the spawn. He wasn’t completely sure that a basher would avoid water, but if it did come, the water gave his spear and claws the advantage.

Ssrask's eyes widened as the sounds of battle raged. Are they fighting over me...?

He wondered if they might be akin to deities, gaining power from those that would pledge themselves. It made sense. He pondered each of their responses. He also noted the colors of their words. Red... white, I think... gold... copper, maybe...

The last two seemed far less appealing. He had chosen white based off looks initially, and knew that fire in the regular game was the most resisted element. Cold was second. While acid was the most optimal choice, he was drawn to the cold. It had always been his favorite season, in his other life. There was an inherent toughness that came with it.

His only hesitation was that the speech of the second was simple, bordering on slow. When accepting power from some greater being, that might actually be an advantage. They were probably far less likely to attempt some sort of manipulation.

"I've decided! Great dragon of the desolate frozen wastes, I submit to you!" He selected the second option.

The feeling of frigid cold pervades you, chilling your soul until it feels as though you must die from it. Then, within the span of a heartbeat, the cold becomes one with you, and you no longer suffer from its bite.

You gain Draconic Heritage (White Dragon) as a bonus feat.

You find two dozen rabbits in the area. All of them appear to have been slaughtered and left for dead. A closer examination reveals that they appear to have been torn apart by very small enemies, leaving no useful materials.

It seems that, without the dungeon, the spawn rate of rabbits in the area has dropped to normal reproduction rates for the species, and someone or something has been rapidly slaughtering any that can still be found.

Hmm... Disappointing, but that means where I find an abundance, there's likely a dungeon as well.

He continued on into the forest. His stance giving him the Scent ability and his Energy aura were both active incase he came upon a sudden threat as he made his way toward that structure.

Energy actually triggers at the start of the target's turn if they're within your aura at that point. Entering and passing through it doesn't harm them. Thematically, it takes a moment for the energy to build up and discharge to harm them. Balance wise, this is to limit the power of an always on AoE damage source.

It also helps keep things straight by rolling saves/damage at start of each affected creature's turn rather than trying to go through and roll them all at once on the player's turn.

The limb lands harmlessly next to the skeletal wolves; however, they immediately go on alert and attack the limb. Finding it to not be an intruder, they begin searching for you. Within a few seconds, they seem to detect your location and begin to circle your tree, looking for a means to reach you.

He broke off a second limb and threw it down with enough force to attempt some damage. He might be able to stay in the trees and simply pummel them to dust as they circled.

If that didn't work, he moved back away from the building, to see if they had some kind of leash or tether to the area.

You manage to hit one of the wolves, but the limb does a measly [1] damage.

Dropping big sticks on them will work—eventually—so long as you don't run out of sizable branches...

As you back away, the undead continue to hound you.

Painfully slow... but not so painful as being bitten in the face. Ssrask settled in for the long hall. Taking limbs as he could from each tree before moving to the next tree. He switched his aura to one of prowess. It helped with damage, so perhaps it might speed up the process.

Once he had smashed one to dust, he could comfortably take out the other using his charging and withdrawing tactic.

It takes you five full minutes of pruning, dropping, gliding, and more pruning before you finally re-kill the first undead wolf.

Then another full minute of your charging minotaur routine before you manage to drop the second.

Thankfully, it seems like you haven't drawn the attention of any additional nearby enemies in that time.

Ssrask retreated. Climbing up into one of the trees by the edge of the clearing, he waited to see if the skeletons would follow beyond it's border. Whether they did or not, he bounded from tree to tree back into the forest. He headed toward the swamp edge. As always, he paused after every leap to reassess and look for threats.

"Can you understand me now?" He had been wondering if the party would translate directly, since his previous party had a shared language.

The man clearly doesn't understand you. He grimaces and gives an exaggerated shrug. Then he slams his fist onto his open palm from above and holds up one finger for you to wait...

Unfortunate. Ssrask was hoping that his increased intelligence would help him understand another language, or the group function would act as a translator. He vaguely understood the man's desire for him to wait, so he perched on a limb until he seemed ready to continue on.

His eyes go blank for almost a full second, then he turns to you and says something, clearly proud of himself.

You still don't understand anything he's saying, but he seems to be waiting for you to respond to him...

The man works his jaw a bit awkwardly as he says, "I'll have to disagree with you on that. I've never heard of 'Ssralish' as a language before."

He shrugs. "Like my message said, the name's Iriander. Ready to kill some spiders? I've got a quest for it, too: the spiders are rapidly expanding their territory, I'm supposed to kill a whole bunch of them and find out why they're expanding so rapidly."

All party members speak a shared language. The party chat is now enabled. (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?617575)

Uh... there's even more slots available? Ssrask pondered for a moment, but decided he'd have to choose carefully on that. This level was to gain more draconic power first and foremost. He selected Primary and Dragon Shaman when it became available.

The core pulses faintly, and you feel a burning in your gut, just below your navel as an invisible wisp of power from the beast core connects with your personal core. The mild nausea fights the surging sense of growing power you receive from the core.

Ssrask focused on the options through the waves of pain. He inherently knew he couldn’t ask for help from Siri at the moment, that could wait.

Growing stronger was important, but he could not pass up the opportunity to attempt anything that had to do with rebuilding. He quickly selected that option.

“Hey Siri, what does applying Cores do to each of the given options?”
