The (not that kind of) Constitution on the foundation of which this whole mess of a series of threads rests (a.k.a. The Rules)

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 12 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Just in time, if the thread grows to 55 pages the forum spacetime continuum implodes. *sagely nod*

Sorry, that's just an excuse to abrogate personal responsibility for global emissions. Those 100 corporations producing 70% of emissions may well be a true fact, but who do you think they're producing those emissions on behalf of? For example, if a power generating corporation produces significant emissions, the most effective way to get them to produce fewer emissions is for the people consuming the power--e.g. *us*--to consume less of it. A corporation that produces mobile phones will produce fewer emissions if people don't change their phone every couple of years and instead keep their old ones for longer. See where I'm going with this?

No, it's not just an exsuce. In fact, claiming it's the fault of the consumer is the excuse.

It is entirely in the ability of that power generating company to make the investment in cleaner-burning fuels, solar panels, windmills, nuclear power, and so on over a reasonable period of time until such a point as they become carbon neutral without any change at all in the behavior of their consumer base.

But they won't. Becuase that would cause a temporary hit to their short term profits. And even though they'd make more money in the long run they don't want to make that initial sacrifice, so they pass the buck to the consumer "oh we wouldn't have to pollute so much if there weren't so many people" but they don't actually want the consumer to use less energy becuase then they'd make less money.

And the phone companies practically force you to buy new phones—have you ever noticed that your smartphone gets kind of crappy after the next model comes out? New phone comes out, and then the next software update for the old phone comes and now everything is kind of crappy.

That's deliberate: Their business model depends entirely on people replacing their phones frequently so they rely on planned obsolescence.

You could live in a tiny home and only replace your phone when it stops working completly and drive an electric car and use a bike pedal generator to power your various kitchen appliances but unless the vast majority of people on earth started doing that at the same time it would have absolutely no noticeable effect on climate change. Even if everyone on earth did it, without widespread changes to how corporations operate it would only be a fraction of the problem taken care of.

Oh, you did? Well, I told you I'm not a regular participant in this part of the forum...

I guess it would be interesting to check the number of posters in the last thread.

4 people with more than 100 posts each.
6 more with 50+ posts
12 more with 10+ posts

Going for 10 posts would probably reduce the waiting time. It might also prevent new participants from creating their own thread, so there is some drawback as well.

Well happy new thread and happy Thanksgiving!

A lot for me has changed in the last year, and I have much to be thankful for:

My health is better than it was

I now own a 1963 MGB, 1969 Lambretta 150, 1973 Norton Commando 850, 1978 Triumph Bonneville, 2006 Vespa, and a 2017 Honda Civic sedan, all of which I bought this year.

I live with two kind hearted roommates four nights a week, one a gentleman who is a generous and good cook, the other a sweet lady who I’m utterly charmed by.

After I moved out, my wife asked me to partially move back and I still live with my wife three nights out of the week, and now she treats me better than she has in over a decade including holding my hand again

With my own place that I stay in half of the week my books are safe from being thrown out by my wife

For the first time in 18 years a woman kissed me, sadly she wasn’t my wife but I’m grateful to her

But yeah, not a whole lot of regulars anymore. Although to be fair they're probably watching films with their flatmates or something.

Thanksgiving this year was a mixed bag: I managed to get my food and hide in my room before anyone else got here so I didn't have to deal with having too god damn many people in my house... and my aunt didn't take all of the food home with her this time.

But apparently, a bunch of people were putting chips straight in the dip with their filthy bare hands so that's a huge thing of french onion dip that basically has to go in the trash becuase my family is full of disgusting people with no regard for others.

But my stepfather is probably going to eat the whole thing himself becuase he does that bullcrap too.

To be fair that's likely her intent; to NOT be in one of the places that is super far north and frozen solid.

And even if she DID do that, there would be warmth!

Also lol "snowed in". That basally never happens here, in part because we just deploy the army to dig people out if it gets like that. The one time it's ever happened to me was because the DOOR FROZE SHUT and could not be opened except by sheer breaking the door.

Here's something to focus on that might help cheer you up; can you explain Scream Supreme to me? Cause this is some sort of fem-bodied venom symbiote mecha and I feel like you'd know what her deal is and I really, really want to know actually.

What is your rent, then? And don't bother saying your pay because you have a government job those pay out the ass. Generally speaking I've always heard that rent in the states is really bad, especially given most jobs pay like garbage. Up here, my rent may seem a lot, but given I get paid a lot of money that's reasonable. If you're making under a certain amount the building I'm in only gives you a rent of 600 dollars.

Zodi, how many bedrooms does your apartment have? $1000 is roughly the standard price for a 2-bedroom apartment in my state; 1-bedroom and studio are both much cheaper.

Mortgage was $820 max. When we got it, it was closer to 680. 3 bed 2 bath, ~1900 sq feet. The main house, at least. The second house it came with is 1 bed 1 bath and about 1000 sq ft- at least, after we got done with it, it was just a spare garage with an unfinished upstairs at purchase. Could have rented it out for close to the mortgage cost, if not the exact mortgage cost. That's all on a little more than a third of an acre.

Now, I should also qualify this - even with Alabama's low cost of living, we have been incredibly lucky. We had a lot of advantages others don't. When we got the house, it was listed at 175 and was contingent. We were in an apartment at the time which let us execute a swoop, and got it for 168,5. When we rented, I think it was around 750.
Also, I am currently not working the government job that pays out the ass. When I do in the future, I expect my rent to be closer to 1800-2400, or sub 1500 if I'm willing to make a lot of compromises. That all would be in DC though.

Okay, I don't read that since it's an AU where it seems that all the heroes and villains are Giant Robot Pilots. You'd be surprised how many of those there are. Yoou remember Peni from Spider-Verse? In the comics she's basically a female Shinji from NGE. Her Uncle Ben is Gendo is he wasn't such an ******* and Aunt May was one of the mechanics who build SP//DR and later V#NM(pseems to be modeled on Andrea Benton's time as Scream's host? But that seems to be her first appearance and the next issue isn't out so I can't be sure.

In the main continuity, Scream is one of five symbiotes that the original Venom symbiote was forced to spawn while in the custody of the Life Foundation—Alongside Riot, Lasher, Phage, and Agony(as opposed to the movie, where Riot was Venom's commander and the others were referenced but unnamed by the color of the other symbiotes that didn't make it.)

Scream's initial power was a variation of symbiote weapon shifting that manifested as prehensile hair, used by her first host, a Mercenary named Donna Diego who was hired by the Life Foundation to work security(the comics Lfe Foundation were basically) but later on when Donna had a severe psychotic break and started murdering her colleagues she developed a "sonic knife," a bladed weapon that vibrates at a frequency that relally screws up other symbiotes by exploiting their vulnerability to sound. HAs not used it since then though.

(In hindsight, the fact that Scream could do that without hurting herself or her host was maybe an obvious sign that the weakness to fire and sound was mostly psychosomatic.)

Donna came back to sanity some point later and helped Venom rescue some kids who were captured by a Xenophage(an alien that eats symbiotes, brains, and the brains of people who have been bonded to symbiotes) in the aftermath of the 1996 Planet of the Symbiotes Storyline(a Spider-Man storyline that took place right int he middle of the Clone Saga) and then vanished for a while... Until she was eventually hunted down by Eddie, now Anti-Venom, who killed her and sCream Both in the middle of a psychotic break of his own.

Ironically, his own reasoning was very similar to the reasoning that Donna gave for killing the original hosts of the other four Life Foundation Symbiotes.

A couple years ago, the Scream Symbiote was resurrected (and Donna brought back to life as a zombie) by Knull's influence during Absolute Carnage but zombie Donna was disrupted and Scream, under Knull's influence, bonded toa woman named Patricia. Scream broke free of Knull's influence, but Patricia was killed and her symbiote codices harvested by Carnage.

Scream survived, and jumped to Andrea Benton—Formerly the host of the symbiote Mania. Mania had also been bonded to Patricia before joining Andrea(though Patricia was just called 'Venom' due to Mania being a clone of the orignal Venom Symbiote, Andi was the one who gave it a name of it's own) who was actually somewhat salty about Andi losing it(in an earlier storyline)

Andi!Scream went on to have a mini-series(that was unfortunately canceled) and a one-shot in King in Black(that resolved a loose thread from the mini) but then in Extreme Carnage Carnage(Now just Cletus Kassidy's mind in a loose piece of his last symbiote) manages to infect his "siblings" with his essence and take control over them. He did this to Scream, and Andi was forced to destroy the Scream Symbiote with her Hellfire* powers in self-defense.

She was then arrested by Alcehmex guardsmen(who have been given a blatantly illegal amount of authority regarding aliens in the aftermath of King in Black) but rescued by Doctor Steve—the one guy in Alchemex who isn't cartoonishly evil(other than CEO Liz Allan, but she's been asleep at the wheel for a long time) who pulled rank to get her in his lab and extracted the remnants of Scream from her body with the intent to let her go afterward(and secretly, try to bring Scream back to life and secretly return it to Andi) onl for Phage to burst in and try to kill Andi for killing Scream.

Doctor Steve wasn't able to revive Scream, but he was able to combine her remains with one of his projects—combining samples of the synthetic Anti-Venom 2 with samples looted from the remains of a fight between cArnage and some Weapon V Super Soldiers to mass-produce Anti-Venom Suits—to create an "Anti-Scream" who unlike either Anti-Venom has a mind of her own. She identifies as "Silence" and Andi as Silence is now working with Fash Thompson as Agent Anti-Venom(which is more or less how she got started out.)

Scream Supreme looks like Andi's appearance as Scream more than Donna's or Patricia's, but until she pulls out some flamethrowers next issue I can't be certain.

*It's a complicated story, but Andi is basically Mephisto's heir: If he permanently dies, or if he wins "the Descent" and effectively becomes "the real devil", Andi inherits his Hell-Realm and, if he dies, his powers. As it is she can summon and control demons, conjure and manipulate hellfire, transform into a demonic version of herself complete with demonic weapons, and she's impervious to all forms of heat and fire(and can share this with others on contact with her.) Eventually, she's going to permenantly transform into a demon. Originally this was corrupting her towards violence and malevolence, but he eventually drank some magic space water that purified her letting her get all the benefits while staying herself. I imagine that Mpehisto's a bit pissed about that.

I'm considering adding a bit of mad science to my Alchemy novel. Specifically the main character is established as a roboticists(/engineer), and I'm considering having her just start to create devices that are better than they should be. Not to Heterodyne levels, certainly, but slowly approaching the 'I'll show them all' level.

I don't think it's possible to take that seriously.

It was presented seriously.

If you want something less serious, Deadpool once lost a bet with Penn Jillette and was forced to use an image inducer to fill in for Teller in stunts that would be a bit too dangerous for someone who didn't have regenerative immortality.

The real Teller, meanwhile, impersonated Deadpool and spent time-fighting crime with Spider-Man.

A question I'd want to ask is "is that how much YOU pay, or how much all of you pay collectively" because there are multiple people living with you. If you split the rent of course it's going to be cheaper, more people are paying for it. You also mention mortgages and stuff, and the way you explained it it sounds like you're renting a HOUSE and not an apartment, like mine, so that's not really fully comparable I think? You are in fact quite blessed though, that sounds really good for a full on house.

Though yeah, as you realize... all of this is a bit moot since oops right I'm speaking in Canadadollers and you were thinking America Buxs.

(just to continue this discussion though, my apartment is a bacholer suite, 425 square feet. No actual bedroom deliniation but since it is a bacholer suite that's not a big deal. Also, aside from internet every single utility is paid by the apartment)

The "we" is self and spouse, but only I work. The renter we have is a friend who had student loans and credit card debts and we rent to him severely under market value to help him out (which we can do because we don't rely on that at all, and is purely bonus income). Also, there's no functional difference between apartment and house for the second building for us, on how we use it. If you saw only the inside layout (which is actually hanging out on an old RB, actually), you'd see it as an apartment. It just happens to have no shared walls, washer dryer hookup, and garage parking. Heck, those three are the big reasons why we would be potentially be able to charge so much for it despite being 1b1br. Also we got a really nice stainless French door fridge/freezer in there, a really nice microwave, a nice sink/faucet set, and the contractor managed to score us an upgrade to granite countertops at no extra charge. This is true- though as loath as I am to admit it I'd agree with the flower that it's really more "all money is fake because money isn't real", even if functionally our society is built on having to pretend it is real and true.

So weird thought that's been in my brain for a bit.

A lot of the Disney movies of the last couple of years have someone point to it and say that it's got Disney's first LGBT character in it... More than once, it's kind of offputting to say the same websites say the same thing about four or five different movies. (and all of those characters are in minor, easy-to-miss roles to boot.)

However, In the original animated Mulan from the late 90s Shang is very clearly falling in love with "Ping" before finding out that "he" is actually a woman. When Mulan is finally outed as a woman in disguise he honestly seems more personally hurt that she kept it from him than the fact that that was a crime and reacts as such. And, when he gets over those feelings, is still attracted to her.

So... Shang is the first LGBT character in a Disney movie. He's either Bi or... Has an attraction to specific individuals regardless of what their sex or gender is. Either way he's not straight. And he's the male lead with his attraction being a factor of the main plot They just didn't make a big deal about it or try to exploit it for Woke Points.

(Bonus points, the orignal animated Mulan had the theme of "gender roles are bull****, do what you want and/or need to do regardless" Three of the songs on the soundtrack amount to "women face unreasonable expectations," "the expectations of me just becuase of how I was born don't feel right for me," and "there are also a lot of unreasonable expectations of men.")

thats certainly a thought, Rater.

I've lately been watching a lot of the newer DC animated movies lately and they're pretty good. Batman Bad Blood having a lesbian gun-wielding batgirl was the last thing I ever expected but I love it. (huh, oddly same vein.) as well the Deathstroke movie having a random lesbian hive member gambling and the moments just pass by.

like I've been binging them on HBO max so I can really get the superhero genre formula drilled into my brain. anything with Constantine in it actually breaks the formula a bit because he is the Proto-dresden who solves things more wit than fists and doesn't have happy endings to anything he does, where Harry Dresden arguably is better received in his universe than Constantine is in his.

so far as I can tell at least for the movies I watched, the formula seems to be the superhero facing a personal problem and a superhero problem at the same time and how their life impacts them both, and whether it ends happily depends on the character: if its Superman it always ends well, Batman its well a lot of time but can be sad, and with antiheroes it has a high chance of ending bittersweet or poorly. and the more anti-heroic the protagonist the more likely the violence is going to be bloody and have people die, while the more they're heroic the more its toned down.

Why do people LIVE THERE

Peelee, you're a Silver Dragon. Aren't you immune to cold?

I'm strongly considering moving up there in the next few years because they're one of the more LGBTA friendly countries on the planet.

My rent is 1000 dollars.

Rent in some places is real nice I see. Here in the insane county they call Los Angeles CA a two bedroom average rent as posted for the last three months of data is:

August 2021 - $2,834
September 2021 - $2,903
October 2021 - $2,943

That is in USD.

I am blessed in that I bought a house many years ago so my monthly mortgage payment is much less.

A studio apartment here goes for $950-$1100, and other housing options go up from there. Here it is deliberate though, there was a concerted effort to make housing expansion expensive and difficult in the 1970s.

Location location location. It's a true as it is trite. Alabama has crazy low cost of living. Go into certain parts of Birmingham and you'd never realize it though.

I pay $1,000 a month for a large room with voluminous closets on the top (second) floor in a detached house in “the avenues”, I share a toilet and a bathroom (they’re separate rooms) with a gentleman that is a generous cook who lives in the fireplace room, we both share the kitchen and dining room with a charming lady who has two rooms for a $1,000 a month and her own shower and toilet, yeah she gets a better deal rent wise but she cleans the common areas more including our bathroom (she was never asked to, she just does), downstairs a smaller room goes for $750 a month with a kitchen, et cetera shared with one roommate.

There’s a little bit of garage space in which I store a motorcycle or scooter, plus I have use of half the driveway to park my car (the downstairs neighbor uses the other half), on the street parking past two hours is $160 a year to The City for a parking permit (active military, business owners, students, teachers, and a few others can get one for free), which I pay because I have two cars, though a block away one may park without a permit. I also pay $265 a month for garage space in a different house for two other motorcycles I own (yes, two motor cars, two motorcycles, and two motor scooters, a Honda, a Lambretta, an MG, a Norton, a Triumph, and a Vespa, yet I live in a walkable neighborhood, I am a fool when it comes to old things).

The neighborhood is nice, low crime, a park, drugstore, and library, and several restaurants all within a five minute walk, plus a trolley line to go downtown. A large supermarket is a ten minute walk, the post office is a 15 minute walk, a hardware store is a 20 minute walk, as is an auto parts store, I can run to the ocean inside of 20 minutes, walking is 45 minutes, a drive is 5 to 10 minutes, it takes about 25 minutes for me to drive to work,

For the same $1,000 a month in the SOMA area (near my work) you get no parking, a small room that can hold a bed, a chair, and little else, a bathroom you share with a dozen others on the floor, and hypodermic needles on the sidewalks and crime. Lots of nearby bars and restaurants though.

Keeping a motor vehicle and living in “the avenues” instead was an easy choice.

Some areas of San Francisco wouldnÂ’t be my choice to live in, so my “Pros” are mostly neighborhood specific, as are my “Cons” of living in San Francisco;

Pros:
I like being near the ocean, the waves calm me, it’s a two minute walk from my front door lets me see the ocean, a forty minute walk, or a ten to twenty minute drive and walk let’s me touch it.

Stern Grove and it’s free summer concert series (both pop and the San Francisco Symphony, and this year punk rock with X and The Avengers!) is nearby.

Dozens of restaurants and a half dozen bars are all within a ten minute walk, the nearest cafe is a three minute walk, the nearest bar is a six minute walk at most.

Public library, park, and a children’s playground are all within a five minute walk. A better playground for the five year old (it used to have a real Navy jet for kids to climb on, now it has an airplane shaped “play structure”) is ten minutes away by foot or car.

A bit smaller than in the suburbs, but “big box” stores may still be driven to, a few with plentiful parking.

Small family owned shops are abundant.

Restaurant downtown dating from the early 20th century with wood paneled booths with curtains you may close so you and your lunch/dinner date may have privacy.

A corned beef specialty butcher near my work!

The old man with the large (for San Francisco) house filled with 1960’s British car parts who fixes my MG lives here.

A men’s clothing shop that specializes in early/mid 20th century British styles that has a portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth II on it’s wall.

An Italian motor scooters of the 1960’s and ‘70’s shop (where I got my Lambretta) is in the Bayview neighborhood (there’s also supposed to be a guy who’ll work on 1960’s/‘70’s British motorcycles in that neighborhood, but so far I still take my Norton and Triumph back to Oakland or down to San Jose for that).

Dozens of bookstores within a few square miles of me.

Plentiful concerts and theaters.

The religious buildings are usually more impressive looking and nice to look at.

My job is here, it’s fairly secure, and I’m paid a middle class wage, and I hated crossing the bridge to get to it and back when I lived just outside of San Francisco.

The fog in the western half of The City, I hate being hot (unless I’m swimming) and I love the fog.

The views, so many good views.

(In going over that list maybe itÂ’s London I should live in instead)

Cons:
Near my work are hypodermic needles (and worse) on the sidewalks, beggars and tents

Turning left at an intersection is often illegal

Free parking is harder to come by than in the ‘burbs

Car break-ins are common in some neighborhoods (thankfully not mine).

Some neighborhoods (thankfully not mine) smell like pee.

The rent is too damn high

I’ve also heard one or two say that The City is LGBTA+ friendly compared to elsewhere.

I love San Francisco.

Please move here all you Random Banterers (unless I move to London).

Some people will say offense, becuase the best defense is a good offense.

I say, however, that if you have a good enough defense you don't need offense.

Problem is we could debate endlessly about what is or isn't a good enough defense or offense to make the other obsolete, the ideal situation is peace which is arguably neither, and every defense or offense I can think of has flaws.

pure defense only works if the only goal is to defend everything within those defenses. as soon as the enemy goes around them to get something outside those defenses to gain an advantage, the defenses have failed. a smart enemy sees a turtling strategy and knows not to engage but figure out ways around the turtle shell.

a smart enemy can also take advantage of a pure offensive, luring one part of the offense into traps while striking at places they are vulnerable in other parts.

Oh yeah, it's a ton. From what I understand there's a lot that can go on, and a lot of required aftercare. The three months until you can go beyond snuggling is pretty much a footnote.

Plus I've heard that it hurts like hell for the next day and that you don't even get a meeting with a vagina designer to pick out what you want.

The main reason I've been looking this up is because my girlfriend's surgery is also in the near future, and I want to have at least a bit of understanding as to what she's going through.

Apparently the prep work sometimes involves lasers. Ouch.

But I'm sure you know much more than I do

GMed another session of The One Ring the other day, we're almost to the end of a particular module I have mixed feelings on. It's very, very railroady as the PCs are basically trapped in a nightmare that tells the tragedy of a town took into bondage in the dungeons of Sauron. On the one hand I think it's an interesting way to give some reality to what the heroes are fighting against, as in "This is what happens when Evil wins" and I'm using it as the backstory of the campaign's big bad (who is undead) which isn't in the campaign book. On the other hand it seems to be crafted to be as frustrating ad possible since the PCs can't really alter events. Even before the nightmare begins, the heroes are sent in an unwinnable battle to be saved by that most well-known of Dei ex Machinae, the Eagles and then it gets worse.

I think this module could be very fun if played with a group that's much more in the "roleplaying" side of "roleplaying game" than the "game" side. And that only describes one of my five players.

Still, the party's dwarf, wearing nothing but cloth as an armour managed to kill a hill-Troll in single combat, which was pretty dang awesome.

In other news, I've learned that the company I'm working at, because of some weird byzantine rule only allows me to place paid leave days after May, I can take a couple in advance, but only a couple and having only two days off during the end of year festivities is going to suck. Especially since I'm likely yo be the only one at the office still working.

Anonymouswizard

Yeah, that module just sounds frustrating. Many modules could do a lot better to not present a linear plot, and to be willing to have lots of content that the group just won't see because they were doing something else.

I'm still struggling to find a group myself. Been trying to convince friends to play Paleomythic or Those Dark Places. I'd love an excuse to run Jackals due to bronze age fantasy appealing to me, but the character creation rules require quite a lot of point counting. So sadly I'm having to write adventures rather than using a module, and so scouting potential players is delayed for the moment.

As for holiday booking, that seems a little excessive. The first few months is understandable, but that's half a year away, and didn't you start months ago anyway?

Must be good homebrew.

I mean, it is only Homebrew by a technicality: It's written by Holden Shear, who used to be the head designer for Exalted.
Exalted was originally pitched(and advertized) as the ancient mythic pre-history of the Classic World of darkness and one of his ream projects was making a crossover game between the two so, once he was let go from OCP he decided "screw it" and made his own homebrew version.

The first draft took him like, two weeks, a few months later he released a companion book, that was back in 2019, and very recently he released a revised and expanded edition (https://holdenshearer.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/exalted_versus_world_of_darkness_revised.pdf)

He's also apparently working on a Chronicles of Darkness version that's already been playtested.

The expanded version ads rules for Liminal Exalted—a supernatural being interfered in an attempt to either bring the dead back to life or create new life from death, resulting in monstrous Demigod with horrific powers and a driving mission to prevent the Unquiet Dead from interfering with the living and vice versa while trying to figure out who and what they are—and the take on them in the book draws heavily on the Promethean inspiration for the Liminals: You have no soul, only a broken source of divine power, your existence is unnatural and wrong and your body feels alien. How do you cope?

The possibility exists that a Liminal who follows the right path and gains enough understanding can transcend their broken existence and I got curious and brainstormed with some people on another forum how to handle that mechanically.

To be somewhat fair, I do understand that many people buy modules in order to not do the improvisation stuff. But I'd still rather have a sandbox where I have to improvise what happens after the PCs mess everything up and/or set the marsh on fire.

If you have a conflict that isn't "judge is a corrupt and/or incompetent piece of ****, hold's protagonist's fate in their hands" but that's the only way you can make your court scene have any stakes whatsover... Maybe don't do a court scene.

In this sort of scenario, the judge and prosecutor are both acting as antagonists. You don't necessarily need the judge themselves to be the main bad guy.

It does sort of strain incredulity in my eyes that if a judge and prosecutor both want someone thrown in prison, they could possibly get off. I don't care how good your attorney is, if you can't - for example - protest illegal submissions of evidence, then you're screwed.

Sure, the jury could still rule 'not guilty', but if the case made it to trial at all there should be plenty of evidence the prosecution can use. Especially if the defense cannot properly defend.

In this case, what pushed me over the edge was this week's issue of Fantastic Four.

A known supervillain making a mockery of the justice system, acting flamboyantly, summoning a warlock to threaten the other party with the removal of his soul(thereby intimidating the other party into refusing the right to cross-examine), and presenting mostly information that he could not have obtained by legal means to the court out of context as part of a custody battle to remove his "son" (actually an adolescent clone with none of his memories or personality who emphetically does not want to be returned to his "father's" custody) from his foster parent should not under any circumstances end with the judge removing an entire family of children from the custody of the foster parent's housemates who are there to prove that the foster parent can provide a safe and stable home environment.

Bonus points: The judge is a high-level superhuman able to render She-Hulk and the Thing effectively powerless in her telekinetic grasp... And one of the first things we hear about her is that she is openly intolerant of other superhumans, which means that in a trial presiding over a custody battle where one party is a superhuman and the other is a normal human who uses technology to commit crimes, she's inherently predisposed against the protagonists and thus should have recused herself.

(We're also outright told that she has never been present in any major event despite living in MYC for years, which with her power level effectively means that she actively chose to let innocent people die.)

Holdon, let's back away from "technically" and "effectively". First off, is this a US state or federal court, and if so, is there an actual "superhuman" court system in place?

The details we know of the trial.

The subject matter is the custody of 1 Bently 23, an adolescent clone of one Bently "The Wizard" Wittman, known supervillain, and whether he should remain his foster father one Dragon Man, former supervillain, reformed, and a current affiliate of the Fantastic Four or be returned to his biological "father," the aforementioned Bently Wittman.

When the question of the existence of the soul of Dragon Man(who is an android) is brought up, the judge states that Superhuman court policy is to treat the rights of sentient artificial beings and self-evident and sacrosanct, indicating that the custody case is being tried in a "superhuman court."

Witnesses supporting each case can be cross-examined.

The Courthouse is in New York City.

The judge is able to hold people in contempt of court.

The judge is both a superhuman and openly biased against superhumans.

Wittman's argument consists entirely of questioning the existence of Dragon Man's sentience and soul, hiring a warlock to intimidate Dragon Man into declining to cross-examine, providing examples of children under the care of the fantastic four being put in danger out of context to make them(and therefore Dragon Man) look like irresponsible parents.(the parents can't really be held responsible is a multiversal scale cosmic entity decides she hates your son, and they did everything in their power to keep her far away from him) Some of these incidents are things that he had no means fiding out by legal means, incidentally. He also tries to claim that a former child soldier having a panic attack and using lethal force against people who are trying to kidnap him and his sister away from the only loving home he's even known and return him to state of slavery where he was forced to fight to near-death on an hourly basis for the amusement of a galaxy's worth of rich sociopaths was "murdering extraterrestrial visitors" and that getting a traumatized teenager therapy is a bad thing, and actively provokes the other side into having an extreme reaction.

Despite the fragility of his case, and the provocations, and the flamboyant unprofessional attitude he takes, the judge seems to care more about the reactions of dRagon Man and the Fantastic Four and ultimately hold them in content and the issue ends with ehr questioning whether or not she should remove not only Bently 23, but Franklin and Valeria Richards and Jo-Venn and N'Kallia Grimm from their respective parents' custody as well... Which is far outside the scope of such a case.

I would assume that it's a new york stare courthouse, but Dragon Man was retaining She-Hulk as his legal representative and she's licensed to practice law literally everywhere in the world.

As an aside, the fact that Bently 23 doesn't want to be returned to Whitman's custody never comes up.

The details we know of the trial.

[wall of text]

OK, as far as what I was trying to determine, the vast majority of that is irrelevant. The relevant parts are:

The Courthouse is in New York City.
"the judge states that Superhuman court policy is to..."

So, normally we would just be able to say, "well, in NYC family court, X would be the case", but the entirely new division of superhuman court throws that for a loop. Criminal court ain't like juvenile court ain't like family court ain't like small claims court ain't like....

Now, your big issues are most likely valid, but we can't know for sure - for example, the judge is a superhuman court judge, which implies that prejudice for or against superhumans is not cause for recusal over conflict of interest, by sheer virtue of being a judge in the superhuman court. We could try to guess what the rules might be, but going by the whole "deals specifically with superhumans" thing, weird things may crop up. And do, apparently.

Regardless of anything, though, the most ridiculous thing that I'm surprised you didn't mention earlier as being the most patently stupid of it all (and a lot of the superhero court system sounds pretty crazy, I'll totally agree with you there) was "she's licensed to practice law literally everywhere in the world." :smallwink:

Well, the cover of next month's issue shows Franklin Richards at every point in his life that we know about so far, which seems to indicate that he'll be getting his powers back. ...Well, I think we can all agree that the laws of man are irrelevant compared to the laws of physics.

Look, the marvel Universe has a lot of national and international laws on the books that exist solely to justify superhero tropes in-universe. Jen being able to be licensed to practice law wherever she happens to be when she's working as a lawyer is probably one of those.

Like, it's a matter of NAtional Law that "costumed adventurers" who are acting in good faith to assist law enforcement, emergency actors, or civilians during emergencies or the commission of a crime are shielded from the legal consequences of their actions and are always subject to the protections of any or all "good samaritan" laws or similar that may exist in the city, county, or state they reside in may have.

(Technically, this means that things like the Superhuman Registration Act and Kamala's Law were illegal when they were in effect, as neither law repealed the earlier law regarding the protections that exist for costumed adventurers.)

It is official United Nations Policy that the Avengers have international jurisdiction worldwide and can do whatever they want within reason.

This is why I like DC Silver Age superhero stories the best - you can't really have a large scale superhero world without things just being flat-out stupid, and DCSA comics at least embraced that. No pretending that She Hulk can practice law in places that don't allow women even basic rights, just Jimmy Olsen will die if Superman doesn't judge a pie sitting contest for some reason. I can deal with stupid acknowledging being stupid and having fun with it. Hell, I enjoy the hell out of that. Stupid pretending to still be serious? It just falls apart for me.

...Like, nobody who has a choice seems to learn languages the hard way unless the character is canonically a genius. They just pull a favor with professor X who beams the language in their subconscious and then they literally learn it in their sleep.

As for her skill at being a lawyer... in the State of New York, it is a matter of established legal precedent, that She-Hulk has the biggest breasts of any woman who is a member of the Superhuman community. Which means that she not only convinced a judge that this was a truthful statement, but also that she convinced a judge that this was relevant to some ruling or decision.

I do not know why she went to the effort to do that, other than the fact that she is canonically very body proud

Well, that sounds like the answer to your rant. Looks like having laws that exists solely to justify superhero tropes is a double-edged sword. After all, isn't "the villains have better odds of succeding than the heroes" THE most basic superhero trope in existence?

Like, it's a matter of NAtional Law that "costumed adventurers" who are acting in good faith to assist law enforcement, emergency actors, or civilians during emergencies or the commission of a crime are shielded from the legal consequences of their actions and are always subject to the protections of any or all "good samaritan" laws or similar that may exist in the city, county, or state they reside in may have.
Wow, sounds like the Punisher can get away with a lot more murders than I thought.

It is official United Nations Policy that the Avengers have international jurisdiction worldwide and can do whatever they want within reason.
The U.N. can't do that, though. Because:
A) Not every place on Earth is part of the U.N.
B) The U.N. is closer to "diplomatic forum" than "One World Government" and does not have the authority or the ability to overrule the legal systems of sovereign states.

So if Marvel Comics gets to make up bull**** legal practices to speed up their plot when it's convenient why couldn't they do the same to set it up when it is?

So hat comes down to a matter of practicality.

Are you going to tell the woman who could shatter the earth by stomping hard enough that she doesn't have any rights in your country?
Yes. Wouldn't want the women in my* country to get any ideas. And when she reacts violently (hopefully killing a few of the disposable soldiers I have conscripted/brainwashed into service) I get to take her home nation to task for attacking mine unprovoked and using that as leverage in whatever international negotiations I am currently involved in. If I play mu cards right, I might even manage to have her punished by her own government for giving them bad press, for free!

And even assuming I'm not this machiavellian or that she somehow managed to get to me personally instead of my minions, I doubt anybody in the world would contest my ruling as void the decision of a court where one participant used (threats of) violence to get in once she's left. What is she gonna do, set up permanent residence here? Take over my government?

*Speaking as an hypothetical mysoginistic dictator here.

Wow, sounds like the Punisher can get away with a lot more murders than I thought.
Not really. acting in "good faith" is the keyword here. Frank doesn't do what he does to help people, he jut has a love of violence and death and an unshakable hatred that only cold-blooded murder can sate.

Anything he says about avenging his family or an "endless war on crime" is an excuse and the best Punisher comics are the ones where he admits it.

He's also been known to shift the blame for his own actions: In an issue of Daredevil he murdered a guy dealing drugs in cold blood, then when he realized that the dealer was a teenager he cradled the body and cried, cursing "crime" for killing the kid... Hate to break it to you Castle, the abstract concept of crime didn't pull the trigger.

Frank is a serial killer and supervillain and the only reason he's popular is that in the 90s the idea of a real hard man who was tough on crime appealed to a bunch of edgelords so he got his own miniseries.

I mentioned this to a friend a while ago but didn't mention it here: I'd really like a Shenmue or Yakuza-style open-world game...

That's a licensed game for King of The Hill.

It's the ideal setting for that kind of "mundane slice of life interrupted by occasional action" stuff type game. Mostly just an exaggerated take on realistic topics, but occasionally there are significantly higher stakes and hints that the setting isn't as mundane* as presented.

It'll never happen for a number of reasons, but it would be nice. You play as Hank and run around town solving increasingly more serious problems and occasionally having to make good on the threats to kick someone's ass.

*Off the top of my head, in the first season Bobby seems to be able to communicate with an ant queen and ends up being mind-controlled by her pheromones, the Us Military performed highly illegal human experiments on soldiers who volunteered to serve their country in an attempt to create super soldiers who could survive in arctic conditions, the last scene of Buckley's angel indicates that he's real and not just a hallucination in Luanne's head and one episode implies the existence of actual aliens.

The first Conspiracy Theorist fighting style move is Pocket Sand, absolutely.

Yes.

The way I see it: It been a few years since the series finale, but everyone has barely aged because of course, they have. Poor economy has hit everyone hard, the crime rate is a bit higher than it used to be, and after reading about a mugging in the newspaper Hank decides to try and get in shape and get in the habit of practicing the skills needed to defend himself. You start with basic formless kicks and punches, but early on he takes a class at the Y or something to refresh himself on his old boxing skills which gives you access to very basic upgrades and serves as the combat tutorial. But Hank already knows how to box, he just needs the brief refresher so he doesn't really learn much, and one thing leads to another and it ends with the Rainy Street Gang pooling their resources to help each other learn how to defend themselves if they need to.

Bill: Bill's the least healthy member of the gang, but from time to time the high school athlete turned soldier comes out, I figure he's got some good... Power charges, for lack of a better term. From Bill, you learn how to throw your weight around.

Boomhower, as established in the series finale, is a Texas Ranger. This means that, among other things, he has eight years of experience in law enforcement, so it's not only plausible but probable that he knows some grabs and restraints and submission type things—whatever it is you need to know how to do to wrestle a belligerent drunk twice your size into a pair of cuffs.

Those two are your early game options for learning new things for the combat system.

Later on, Kahn gets convinced to join in on this scheme. In the episode where he just gives up and decides to become a Hillbilly, he ends up in a fight with a belligerent Hick and demonstrates that he has at least moderate skill in Pencak Silat. This is your mid to late-game stuff.

..Cotton would be dead by this point in show continuity, but "hey we found some of your dads things and sent them to you... oops there was a mixup and they're scattered around town" could be used to justify leveling up a "basic military CQC" fighting style via excerpts from Cotton's War memoirs detailing exactly how he killed some of those fitty men in the pacific.

And like I said, Dale is the optional Unlock who teaches you all of the really overpowered stuff despite being the last guy you'd expect to know that.

The hard part is balancing it: The combat should be fun, but it should also be clear that these are a bunch of middle-aged men practicing how to defend themselves if they need too rather than the Dad-Bod brigade training themselves up into the A-Team.

Had what felt like a really creepy nightmare that woke me up. First time in a while I got one that bad, not.since I got my cpap machine.

Somehow the protagonist found a sentient book that addicts the reader to it when they read it. They become obsessed with the book, and also gain some sort of blood based power (think vampires but not dead.)

The book compels the holder to show other people the book, but their obsession drives them to rebel and try to kill the holder. The protag is actively gathering sacrificial victims and cult members while being attacked by the cult, and the book is actively trying to kill him.

Dreams are silly things but boy did that book scare me. Everytime the dream showed the illustrations I freaked out, and I could palpably feel its malevolence.

Can't cuddle with my plushies in one of those tanks, so they're a no go for me.

Everytime the dream showed the illustrations I freaked out, and I could palpably feel its malevolence.

...Okay, that sounds downright Lovecraftian. That...

That's the kind of dream you have at the beginning of a cosmic horror story before it starts happening for real.

And I'm not anywhere near close to figuring out how to open portals to fictional universes yet, so I can't equip people with symbiotes* just in case of cosmic horror.

*In addition to the whole 'fight eldritch fire with eldritch fire' aspect, symbiotes were literally created to be able to murder gods and anything that roughly resembles a god. Since most Lovecraftian and/or cosmic horror involves malevolent, alien gods or godlike entities... I mean if you think you might run into werewolves you bring silver bullets. Even if it doesn't end up working it can't possibly hurt to try. Same basic principle.

Hmmmmm.... Mind if I steal this idea for a short story?

If I can get enough evil book themed short story ideas together I might consider a themed anthology. Although at this point the only other one I have is 'the Necronomicon would be in the public domain...'.

I also need to find some more short story collections. I just like them, and don't always have time for a full novel.

Are you already familiar with The King in Yellow as a play? The SCP foundation wiki is also full of horror stories, some of which deal with evil books or stuff more or less similar if you're looking for inspiration.

I fully intend to not look in the direction of any eldritch tomes for at least a week just in case.

Go for it.

If you need any more details I can still remember the book is alive somehow, and sometimes the protagonist spared people and the book would make them show up again until he infected them.

I'm aware of The King In Yellow, although I haven't read it (guess it's time to head back to Project Gutenberg). As for SCP, I've read some of its articles, but none of the book related

I mean, it's no reason not to do it. But yes, being aware of how it's been done is important.

I've heard it is not great (and also the OG King isn't even... a horror thing, really). But have fun!

Was it bound in human skin too? That's always a classic.

Fun fact: Some authors took it upon themselves to actually write The King in Yellow as a play. So there's the collection of short stories that first introduced the eldritch play as a concept and then there's the actual play all written down too.

I think there is a Daevite themed SCP foundation story with a history book that compels people to add to it (using their own blood?) which retroactively alters history so that the Daevite empire lasts longer. Then there's the symphony that compels people to complete it, also using their own blood until they die. The SCP foundation wiki hosts a fairly large collection of horror stories of varying quality, but if you want to plumb its depths I don't doubt you'll find something useful. And all you really need are evil stories or evil information in any kind of media format, not necessarily books. An evil film or oral retelling or any kind of evil story can always be cast into the shape of a book.

Nah, it was black bark shaved from a wood base as a relief. I doubt it would function as a book in reality.

I screwed up my circadian rhythm by staying up till noon two weekends in a row.

In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have done that.

I've said this before but I'd really like it if I had one or more semi-autonomous remote-controlled puppet bodies that could go out and do things for me while my real body stayed home and slept/otherwise rested.

That seems like an incredibly roundabout way of just wishing you could sleep better and more consistently.

If you work at the movie theater, you should have some knowledge of what the movie is about. So anyway, I went to the movie theater yesterday to buy my movie tickets in advance for the movie called Flee. The cashier asked me what Flee was about. I said to the cashier: "You work at the movie theater and you don't know what this movie is about?" She said "No. I need to catch up on my movies." So I did kindly explain to the cashier what Flee is about. Mostly 95% of the employees of the movie theater that I go to have some movie knowledge.

All of the movies? That sounds like a high bar for no real reason. The cashier does not need to have watched (probably can't afford to watch, too) every single movie shown in the theater to sell you your ticket.

As someone who worked at a movie theater, no. You're wanting them to know what every movie is about, because that's the only way for them to know about the movie that you, specifically, care about. And they don't need to at all. Their job is to take your money and give you your ticket/food, and tell you what room your movie is in. That is the be-all, end-all of what you should expect from interactions with the staff. They are not obligated to know what any given movie is about.

(probably can't afford to watch, too)
Most theaters tend to have some form of "you can watch movies for free" system, with reasonable restrictions. Which still doesn't mean anyone will actually watch everything - Sturgeon's Law applies here, I can promise you.

Well, in my opinion, they should have some knowledge of what the movie is about. I mean seriously they do work in the movie theater. I'm sure they get freebies to watch the movie now and then.

And you have the internet. You can find out what a movie is about in seconds. They have better things to do than watch movies in their time off just to be able to let you know what it's about when you can do that yourself instantly.

They're not supposed to be on the internet at work, and they are not beholden to do things to serve you in their time off. They are not your personal servants.

I didn't say anything like that. I was saying that the cashier was asking me what the movie is about and I kindly told the cashier the summary of this movie. I never once said anything that they're my personal servants whatsoever. :annoyed:

Yeah, it's like expecting a book store employee to know something about every book in the store, except much less extreme (because the cinema tends to have far fewer films). Go into a random bookstore and ask an employee to recommend an LGBT romance, or a book of mythology, and there's a good chance they can't because they're just not interested in the genre.

But I have another theory: their job is boring and they were trying to make it less so by having a bit of a conversation.
