I want to go for really basic stuff. Nothing like throwing fire or shoting lightning, maybe a simple charged up punch to get a short opportunity to escape or draw a weapon. But dealing with spirits or divination and such is right out of the question. I don't want to go all warrior/rogue/mage with my first character.

(2) Physical Adepts (SR3) should work just fine. You'll probably want to forego cyber/bioware since it reduces the power you have access to. However, there is very little "magic stuff" which will be worth stealing for you so you'll need to fix that backstory a bit.

The fluff for Physical Adepts ("PAs") is that they undergo intense training regimes but you can probably handwave that if need be.
