I'm sorry, did I not mention that bit about financial trading? We are, like in the middle of a recession right now? That's bad, right? Things that contribute to the likelihood of bad events should be considered threats, right? But no, please, let's wait another 10, 20, 50 years for this to actually happen. I'm sure we'll take it in stride.
I am not denigrating the importance of social policies and political will here. But these technologies are going to happen. And no social policy or political movement, however well-intentioned, can function on the basis of denying reality.
I know of plenty willing to take out a 200K mortgage for the sake of a house they could just as easily rent. I'm not saying this will happen in a single generation. But given the technology already exists, widespread adoption within a century or two is not, I think, infeasible.
