When a paladin is torn between his Lawful side and his Good side, his Good side always takes precedence. It's official.
So go ahead and tear those Xill a new one.

He should also start writing his epic "the Prime Directive will always be secondary to the moral judgment of a captain acting in good conscience" speech for when he gets chewed out.

The "Prime Directive" was violated as soon as the Xill ship was shot down. This is taking responsibility and cleanup.

Or, you know, he can spin it as preventing a Prime Directive breach by the Xill. I like my plan better though.
