It isn't identical to the Rulescyclopedia version, a little more complex I think, but still in the vein of what you're doing. The difference is, in older D&D characters did not have proficiency with an entire category of weapons, they had to choose a small number from their list of allowed weapons, and the number of proficiencies increased with level. Fighters got four proficiencies at level 1, and another every other level. By dedicating more than one proficiency slot to the same weapon, you increased your level of mastery and unlocked additional effects and increased bonuses.
