That would be true, if Rich said anything, it’s possible these souls were from previous worlds, but Rich isn’t getting boxed in by it, because it might be important that they aren’t.

In my opinion, the ambiguity itself is helpful. It helps to know that The Giant wasn’t deliberately intending for it to be established either way.
