The three messengers maneuvered under the crimson sun with their native indifference to the heat. They made little concessions for the scaleless Watchers in tow. “Only the strong would stand in the Day of Light,” as Qoheleth quoted often from the Wisdom of the prophets.
The Vicar of Dust contrasted from the other two dray in their finery. Where Greven and Lazaar’s voluminous robes bore noble colors and bolts of silk to veil their heads, the priest wore silt-crusted scales flayed from the erdlu over his wind-worn brown robes. He also possessed a shield of lacquered wood with the sign of the Grey.
Lazaar whispered to Greven, ”A pack of sellswords appears to be emerging from the bunkhouse. Their assets would enrich ours.”
Greven answered in his shared-mind speech, ”I will entreat them, Sorcerer.”
Greven advanced with Qoheleth, who instinctively kept stride with the other. The lithe, shrouded messenger proclaimed, ”Well met, travelers! The Day smiles upon us. Your steps seem to bear you on a shared journey.” |
