I'm pretty confident that the idea that Southerners call all carbonated beverages cokes was entirely false when the first linguist to make a dialect map about carbonated beverage names made that assertion. Even now I suspect very few Southerners actually do so unironically, though many will claim otherwise due to the propensity of Southerners to double down on anything about Southern culture that outsiders mock.
