Obviously, the reason Metaknight destroyed his own ship is that he's trying to become stronger by going on all of Kirby's adventures back to back to back.

Not unlike Vegeta deciding to train at 500 times earth gravity after learning that Goku trained at 100 times.

Edit: And, well, if the creators of Psychonauts wanted a memorably vile villain in the Phantom, they succeded. The second you forgot you weren't supposed to go down, I heard "the line" in the back of my head.
