Hobbits are the only sentient species I can think of where their entire origin story gets summed up as "Well, we don't really know because nobody kept any records of them back then". The furthest back it even mentions is the time when they lived between Greenwood the Great and the Misty Mountains, and we know that also has to be the time of Deagol and Smeagol because that's where they found the One Ring. So, as far as the wider legendarium is concerned, they might as well have popped into existence via magic sometime during the Second Age.
