So... Given the overall plot of this game, it's a little painful seeing you retrying the challenges until you get them right.

While that's TRUE, this is not a case of me resetting the entire world to redo those challenges. They're just allowed to be reset.

... that said I feel like the resetting option was added in a patch because I don't recall it the last time I played it, but I also didn't play this game on release so that'd be weird if it was the case.
