This is... interesting.
It seems that Haley's father was one of those do-gooder thieves. Explains Haley's alignment, at least.Visit the Chocolate Hammer IRC channel!

W00T! First comic with copyright 2009 on the bottom. Also, I loved Belkar's line in the last panel.

Re: OOTS #619 - The Discussion Thread
I wasn't a big fan of the MMO jokes, even though I played them for years. Add on to that the fact that most of us expected everything in this strip and I believe the Giant's string of great comics just ended. =/ Oh well, perfection can't last forever.
I still can't wait for the next one!

I also thought the video game references were off a bit. I suppose it worked but I didn't really think it fit.

Re: OOTS #619 - The Discussion Thread
Okay this is weird... I typed in the URL of 619, to see if the Funny Pic of Belkar was still up... and it took me right to 619 the first moment it was out it seems, for when I when to GitP home, 618 was newest... but Groovy.
For a second I thought I broke the multiverse.
@V: I really didn't think it was that bad..? A bit cliche, yes, but I mean it wasn't a bad comic. OOTS has never had a bad comic. Some just didn't meet the expectations we subconsciously set, because the majority of comics are great. It had a Godfather reference's for hell's sake, it must be good.

Re: OOTS #619 - The Discussion Thread
I don't, really. The best artist can't paint a masterpiece every time. It's like with music - in order to understand the beauty of music, you must put in some notes that sound terrible. I feel this was one of those comics. We can't stay on top the whole time, you have to dip down some.

Maybe also a poke at 4th Edition?

Re: OOTS #619 - The Discussion Thread
Sorry, I guess that was possibly one of the dumbest metaphors ever. Anywho, what I'm trying to say is, I can see why this comic could be a hit or miss for people. I liked it, though, and that's all that matters. Sure, it wasn't the best, but that didn't distract from the enjoyment I had from it
Wait, I don't even know what I'm talking about or I'm arguing something or not. I should sleep soon or something.

Re: OOTS #619 - The Discussion Thread
Eh, not sure about that one. I sorta would like a better solution for all this than an off-panel truce and a Blizzard reference as the explanation for why everyone can go their way now... (showing how she rhetorically owns Hank would have done heaps for Celia's once-again horrible reputation, too - Belkar just saved their asses, but she still has nothing but angry glares for him)
Maybe it's because I don't particularly like WoW, but I didn't find it that funny."Sacrifing minions: is there any problem it CAN'T solve?"

Re: OOTS #619 - The Discussion Thread
Huh, I don't really get the "MOB" references... I suppose they're out of an MMO or something, but I've never played any major MMO, so I guess it's just gone over my head.
I laughed at the "leetspeak" joke out of Belkar though. And "40% after reasonable expenses."
Not bad, though it's a pity that it looks like Bozzok and Crystal are going to survive this. Haley can hardly turn down the truce given what Hank has just pointed out will happen if she kills Bozzok, and if she agrees to it, Crystal likely gets off alive too. Oh well.

Re: OOTS #619 - The Discussion Thread
The bolded section is likely why you didn't enjoy the joke. It wasn't aimed at people who like MMO's, it was aimed at people who hate MMO's and think they are ruining D&D, especially in how they influenced 4th Edition. In short, the joke wasn't "for" you.
Think about it, MMO's are presented as being a terrible evil that would come to occupy the territory now held by a D&D group (the Guild); the common complaint that the game is getting to "video gamey" is then voiced. When Haley tries to refute it by saying essentially that "everyone always says that when there's a new D&D edition", Belkar spouts the same chatspeak gibberish that many D&D players have heard take over their table talk: referring to enhancement spells as "buffs" being the most insidious.
This is a clear satire AGAINST World of Warcraft's influence on 4th Edition D&D. If you enjoy WoW and see nothing wrong with how its existence is changing D&D, then you probably won't get the joke.

Re: OOTS #619 - The Discussion Thread
Seems the Halfling guildmember has the situation well in hands. Haley should kill Bozzok and declare him leader of the surviving thieves.
