Giant Butterflies are the insectile counterparts of Giant Eagles and Owls. Though not quite so strong and incapable of attack, they are agile flyers, and a diet heavy in poisonous black lotus flowers provides a potent defense mechanism. Giant Butterflies are favored as mounts by many druids and fey. A druid may choose to summon a Giant Butterfly with his summon nature’s ally II spell in place of a hippogriff.

    Improved Evasion (Ex)
On a successful Reflex save that against an attack that allows a save for half damage, a Giant Butterfly instead takes no damage. Even on a failed save, it only takes half damage.

    Black Lotus Eater (Ex)
Giant Butterflies eat large quantities of the poisonous black lotus, and preserve its poison in their bodies. Any creature that successfully hits a Giant Butterfly must make a DC 16 Fortitude save or suffer the affects of black lotus extract (initial and secondary damage 3d6 Con). In addition, Giant Butterflies are immune to the effects of black lotus extract.

Giant Caterpillars are the larval forms of Giant Butterflies. They are content to do nothing but sleep and eat...and eat...and eat. They have no combat abilities except their poisonous flesh, and seek to flee from battle. Many Giant Caterpillars are cared for by druids or fey, who will defend them from any who attack the. After successfully surviving for three years, a Giant Caterpillar creates a structure in which it may metamorphose into a Giant Butterfly, becoming, temporarily, a Giant Chrysalis.

    Black Lotus Eater (Ex)
Giant Caterpillars eat large quantities of the poisonous black lotus, and preserve its poison in their bodies. Any creature that successfully hits a Giant Caterpillar must make a DC 11 Fortitude save or suffer the affects of black lotus extract (initial and secondary damage 3d6 Con). Giant Chrysalises are the intermediate form of a Giant Butterfly’s life cycle. They remain fixed to one point, generally the branch of a large tree, utterly immobile. They have no ability to move, perceive the world, or attack. Instead, they rely on their tough shell to protect them while they develop into Giant Butterflies.

    Skills
A Giant Chrysalis takes a -14 penalty on all Listen and Spot checks.
