I was thinking of a big bad fight where the big shtick is that the big bad has many copies of himself. Indistiguishable, but under his control. Weaker of course too. The baddie is going to be a high level wizard so is there any way to do lots of these clones?

You could make some sort of clone type of construct using the rules for creating golems...

This is probably your best bet, they'll have only half his class levels but under his complete control.

Or, just have a bunch of minions disguised as him with Veil. Much cheaper than an army of simulacrum. Unless your BBEG has unlimited xp and resources for the purposes of his evil plan, which is always a possibility.

Or why not a mixture? He could have several veiled minions and one simulacrum. The players will think the simulacrum is the real one because it'll eventually use his spellcasting abilities.

While this works for a BBEG, Ice Assassin has the terrible stipulation that although the creature will follow the orders of its creator to the letter it absolutely hates the being after which it was created and that the assassin's sole desire is the destruction of the original. I don't know about you but I wouldn't want me plotting my demise.

What you want is Body Outside Body, a Wu Jen spell in complete arcane. It's useful for a wide variety of abuses.
