3.5 supplement reccomendations

Anyone know a good D&D 3.5 supplement that costs less then 40 bucks on amazon?

I have at the moment:

Core
Draconomivon
Eberron Campaign setting
Complete adventurer
Complete warrior

I'm a big fan of Sandstorm. It just seems to be able to paint the picture of what a desert setting would be. Eberron has a patchwork map and so it would stand to reason that some games could happen in a desert setting.

Complete Arcane is a good buy as well. I wouldn't be surprised if you could find plenty of supplements on Amazon for under 40 bucks.

Tome of Battle ran me 40 bucks, new copy. It is awesome, and should be gotten as soon as is possible.

Also, while I have zero experience with it first-hand, the Expanded Psionics Handbook is generally considered one of the best 3.5 supplements.

Magic of Incarnum is also pretty good. Takes about 2 readings to really understand how everything works, but after that I think it's the easiest system to actually use.

I think the principle question is this:

Heroes of Battle changed the way I ran large-scale combats, as well as skirmishes in the midst of a larger battle.

The Races books (Races of Stone, Races of the Wild, & Races of Destiny) are incredibly inspiring books, full of lore & cultural depth, as well as many player & DM options. You can get the whole set for less than $40, & they're great reads.

Tome of Battle is widely viewed as an awesome book that revolutionized melee combat. Others think it ruined D&D by injecting it with wuxia {Scrubbed}. YMMV.


Cityscape is a sweet book that is essential for urban campaigns. This is one of my favorite all-time splatbooks, of any game. It's on-par with some of the better GURPS supplements in variety & usefulness.

Dungeonscape is awesome, expanding the options for dungeon-delving & design more than anyone thought possible. It's also co-written by none other than Rich Birlew, the Giant in the Playground himself. Lastly, this book gave us the Factotum, the class to end all classes (perhaps literally).

The Expanded Psionics Handbook is the only book you need to run a campaign featuring psionics. Ignore that other psionics book; just use this.

There other great books, but these are more than enough to get you gaming on the cheap.

Another recommendation for Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords from me. It's easy enough to replace the so-called "weaboo" flavor, anyway.

PHB2 is also really good. Base classes, feats, etc.

Since you play Eberron, I recommend:
-Explorer's Handbook (Has PrCs, details for the various vehicles unique to Eberron, and some cool items)
-Races of Eberron is strictly speaking not an Eberron book (which is why it doesn't use the Eberron cover template), but it's got some neat substitution levels and feats.
-Magic of Eberron (This has a LOT of good magic items that didn't get ported into Magic Item Compendium)
-Five Nations has loads of fluff for a Khorvaire-centric campaign, as well as some pretty interesting nation-specific PrCs.

Generally the top recommendations tend to spiral around PHB2, Dungeonscape, and Tome of Battle. Spell Compendium and Magic Item Compendium round out the set, and practically go without saying. Everything else is more or less "pick it if you need it."

PHBII is always good, and unearthed arcane has some pretty nice variant rules from what i understand.

The rest comes down to what kind of campaign you're doing.

Well I am looking at this from the perspective of a DM, I want monsters, lots of them. But also races and prestige classes that work for NPCs and boss monsters. When I don't DM I prefer just about any class, I practically have played every single class in the player's handbook at least once!

Tome of Battle, Spell Compendium, Complete Scoundrel, Player's Handbook II. Best. Books. Ever. Other than that, yeah, Zeta Kai listed a bunch of great books for DMing a variety of things D&D default doesn't touch upon too heavily.

I wouldn't. I mean, I like the Binder but it's entirely disposable for a newb and rather more complicated than it needs to be, and why buy 1/3 of a book when you can get a whole book for the same price? I'd go for Complete Arcane with the Warlock, or even Magic of Incarnum for the Incarnate and Totemist, before Tome of Magic for only the Binder.

That said, hey, it's one you'll probably want eventually.

Definite keepers:

• Core (PHB, DMG, MM)
• Care Bear Stare Handbook (XPH)
• {Scrubbed} (TOB)
• Gimpy Planescape (Manual of the Planes)
• Races of Short Stone
• PHB2

The rest of it (Races of *, Complete *, Planar Handbook, Epic Level Jokebook, Ghostwalk, etc.) has added little enough to my games that I feel no loss parting with them.

Tome of Battle is my favorite. Tome of Magic is also quite cool, as are Complete Scoundrel, Dungeonscape, and Frostburn.

I'd also recommend Expedition to the Demonweb Pits, as I really enjoyed both the module and all the setting information and PrCs that it provides. It covers Sigil and 3-4 of the planes.
