List of Spell Effects

This has probably been asked somewhere but I couldn't find it.
I need a list of spells grouped by the type of effect they cause (damage, buffs etc.)
Specifically I need a list of all spells that do ability damage, drain or penalties i.e. Ray of Stupidity, Shivering Touch etc.

This is a thread I started a little bit ago looking for debuffs. Certainly not all of them, and it kind of died after...the tentacles...but there's a lot in there of worth.

This can be a good starting point. There are categories for ability damage and such; just search for an ability damage spell and click on the "Stat Reduction" tag to get a list of those.

It's not complete, and there might be a few errors, but I find it pretty reliable.

Odd request. I'm not that familiar with all the spells, but here's a list of the Sorcerer/Wizard spells from the SRD.

Note that Fatigue and Exahustion give penalities to STR and DEX, so I've listed those spells also. Contagion delivers various diseases, which all deal stat damage, but not at a very quick pace. I've also listed the ones granting negative levels, as that can kill a creature too.


Touch of Fatigue (Fatigue)
Chill Touch (STR damage)
Ray of Enfeeblement (STR penalty)
Touch of Idiocy (INT, WIS, CHA penalty)
Bestow Curse (one stat decrease)
Cloudkill (CON damage)
Feeblemind (INT, CHA decrease)

Waves of Fatigue (Fatigue)
Baleful Polymorph (stat change)
Waves of Exhaustion (Exahusted)

Contagion (diseases)
