Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
I'd say Maiden changed my life more than Priest
Yeah Ozzy seems to be okay at the moment. Apparently he's not quite the presence on stage anymore, but that's understandable.
I actually got myself Scream just the other day. It rocks Although Black Rain was better, I think.Last edited by Feytalist; 2011-11-16 at 02:14 AM.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Saw Anthrax, Testament, and Death Angel on Saturday. Absolutely incredible
not to mention I got:
1. One of Charlie Benante's (broken) drum sticks
2. One of Scott Ian's guitar picks
3. A guitar pick from one of the Death Angel guitarists (I think it might be Rob Cavestany's)
4. A picture with Chuck Billy
5. A picture with Eddie Trunk
6. A picture with Death Angel's drummer and bassist (individually)
7. A bruise on my chest from being front-row center, slammed up against the barricade
Great show though! Tons of memories. Touched horns with Joey Belladonna too, which was really cool. And Charlie Benante laughed at me because I momentarily forgot how to do metal horns. Thanks so much to Doihaveaname? for the awesome Iron Man Doihavatar! Here's another one.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Any recs for something melodic with sung vocals rather than growls? Preferably something fast and energetic rather than slower and heavy. Cheers all.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Nightfall in Middle Earth is better.
(Had to be said )
For fast, heavy, melodic and sung vocals, there's really no reason to look further than most power metal. From the cheesy stuff like Hammerfall or Dragonforce or even Sabaton all the way to the more symphonic stuff like Kamelot or Blind Guardian or even Nightwish. Some progressive metal fits as well. Stratovarius is brilliant, and Symphony X might be what you're looking for.
Also, allow me to push a band that I mentioned just last week: Shadow Gallery, my favouritest prog metal band of all. Very low-key, they never did live gigs till last year. A whole bunch of quieter, less-metal pieces and then a few great heavy tracks. Brilliant stuff. (I'm not quite sold on their new vocalist though, Mike Baker was the legend).Last edited by Feytalist; 2011-11-23 at 03:43 AM.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
It almost feels silly to mention these, since they're just oh so obvious, but as no one else has recommended them yet, be sure to look into the classics - particularly Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Dio - if you aren't familiar with them already.
There's also a classic metal revival of sorts that's sparked up recently. The two really essential bands to come out of it imo are White Wizzard and Holy Grail. Holy Grail also have a bit of Thrash and Shred influence to them, but everything is done with melody, and the vocals are well sung.
Also since they've somehow escaped mention in the Power Metal recommendations, Iced Mother Freaking Earth.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Huh. I was sure I'd mentioned them. Turns out I didn't. They're also good, obviously. A lot of metal screams, though. I'm still wondering who actually does the screams. It isn't Matt Barlow, obviously, since he's gone, so it can't be Stu Block, since those screams were part of previous albums as well. I don't think it's Schaffer, since I haven't heard it in his other stuff. Anyway, it's not really important. Cause it's awesome.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
I second (actually it's more like fourth at this point) Blind Guardian. My personal favorite album of theirs is Imaginations From the Other Side, but honestly you can pretty much grab anything of theirs and you won't go wrong.
Furthermore, I also recommend in no particular order: Black Tide, Kamelot, Edguy, Firewind, Sonata Arctica, and especially Symphony X.
Agree with all of these. Manowar and Helloween might fit in this category as well, though I wouldn't put them quite on the level of Maiden, Priest, and Dio.
There's also a classic metal revival of sorts that's sparked up recently. The two really essential bands to come out of it imo are White Wizzard and Holy Grail. Holy Grail also have a bit of Thrash and Shred influence to them, but everything is done with melody, and the vocals are well sung.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Just sayin'
Their new one, At the Edge of Time, is great as well. I still love Sacred Worlds, even after that corny music video in Sacred 2, heh.
Allow me to mention Stratovarius again. Their latest album, Elysium, is quite frankly ridiculously good.Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Yeah ATEOT is amazing, it's actually tied with NFIME and ANATO for my favourite blind guardian album. I also seem to be one of the few people who actually really liked ATITM, it was definitively a big shift from their normal sound but it was still great, just in a more dark proggy way.
