So I'm back for some more 2013 black metal recs for ya'll. Here's my first list again for those who missed it, updated with new links to samples and bolded favorites:

    Spoiler
    Show
    Agrypnie - Aetas Cineris
Akitsa / Ash Pool - Arraché ā la mort, forcé ā vivre et mourir ā nouveau / Ripped From Death, Forced To Live, And Die Again Split
Altar of Plagues - Teethed Glory & Injury
Annihilatus / Bloodhammer / Musta Surma - Christine Genocide Split
Arsonist Lodge - Iänkaikkinen, pysyvä, muuttumaton pimeys
    Ash Borer - Bloodlands
    Bornholm - Inexorable Defiance
Clandestine Blaze - Harmony of Struggle
    Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult - Necrovision
    Horna - Askel lähempänä Saatanaa
The Meads of Asphodel - Sonderkommando

Vestiges / Panopticon - Vestiges / Panopticon Split
    Paysage d'Hiver - Das Tor
    Plaga - Magia Gwiezdnej Entropii
    Sad - Devouring the Divine

    Sielunvihollinen - Ruttokieli
    Summoning - Old Mornings Dawn
    Vlad Tepes - Anthologie Noire

Stuff that is related to black metal:
    Deafheaven - Sunbather
    Darkthrone - The Underground Resistance

Anyway, here's some new stuff to bang your heads to:

Aosoth - An Arrow in Heart
    • Orthodox BM from the French masters. Not my favorite of the year but it has a few damn good riffs and a creepy atmosphere.

    Arckanum - Fenris Kindir
    • I expect I will grow to love this as I give it more listens. I think I've not given it as much attention as it deserves. Great and interesting riffing with crunchy guitar tones coupled with vile vocals and some great song writing. Good stuff.

    Arnaut Pavle - Arnaut Pavle
    • This slays. More proof that Finland knows how to make black ****ing metal. People into really aggressive BM with a thrashy edge will like this.

    Bölzer - Aura
    • The riffs on this EP are insane. Black/death metal with an incredibly unique and powerful style. Can't wait for a full length from these guys.

AVM / Cape of Bats - Black Mass of Jihad
    • Split between hardcore punk band AVM and black metal/punk band Cape of Bats. The first AVM song is my favorite track on the split by far but the whole thing is a fun burst of extreme music.

    Cultes des Ghoules - Henbane
    • Occult black metal from Poland! Powerful riffage, destructive atmosphere, and long songs that invoke old school black metal while doing more than ape the classics. Still letting it grow on me but two people whose taste I trust list it as their fave BM record of 2013.

Dodsferd - A Breed of Parasites & A Cursed Heritage
    • Though I liked Dodsferd before these two albums, they were admitedly somewhat middling; they just happened to be unique enough to be fun. These two albums slay though. Haven't decided which I like more but they're some quality black metal with a depressive edge.

Fir Bolg - Towards Ancestral Lands
    • Celtic black metal from France. Folk touches, sharp riffage, everything you want from black metal. Not exactly folk/black if that's what you're looking for, but still recommended.

The Great Old Ones - Bachelorette (Björk Cover)
    • It's a Björk cover!

    Gris - Ā l'âme enflammée, l'äme constellée...
    • A monument of atmospheric melancholy. I disliked it at first, and it's still not as good as Il Était Une Foręt... IMO, but it's grown on me quite a bit and I bet a lot of the folks here would dig it.

    Morrigan - Diananns Whisper
    • The vocals on this album can be goofy at times but the riffing is good enough to justify a listen. Celtic black metal, just like Fir Bolg!

    Neige Éternelle - Neige Éternelle
    • Icy raw black metal from the frigid wastes of Québec. I'm not as enthused about it as some others I know but it's still good.

    Nordvrede - Monument Viktoria
    • Fierce black metal burst from Norway. This album destroys, and I'm pretty sure I hear some cowbell in there. Only bad thing I can say about this is that the band is on Darker than Black Records, a primarily NSBM label.

Pagan Hellfire - On the Path to Triumph
    • Raw black metal from Canada with beautiful melodies. Love simple, lead based black metal with good atmosphere? Pagan Hellfire has you covered.

    Permafrost - Devil Worship
    • Because Satan never gets old. Straight forward black metal, not much to say, but pretty fun and includes a cover of the infamous GG Allin's song "Outlaw Scumfuc" [sic].

    Pest - The Crowning Horror
    • Swedish black metal champs Pest bring blackened heavy metal! Great stuff, with an old school production and plenty of great riffs.

    Peste Noire - Peste Noire
    • I don't think I need to say much about this. Eccentric French BM, one of my all time faves. Ya'll (should) know 'em.

Sombres Foręts - La mort du soleil
    • Did you like the Gris? Then you'll like this.

Torture Chain - Mutilating Astral Entities
    • Epic, dark and raw stuff with really interesting leads. Will brutalize your soul.

    Troll - Drep de kristne

    • This, Troll's first album, was rereleased digitally via their bandcamp this year. Pretty good though sometimes cheesy early Norwegian symphonic black metal.

    ZOM - Multiversal Holocaust
    • Fierce and crushing black/death metal. Looking forward to the full length.

    Various Artists - Tliltic Tlapoyauak
    • Compilation of tracks from members of the Black Twilight Circle, a group of excellent USBM bands, including tracks from the bigger projects like Axeman, Arizmenda and Volahn, as well as tracks by newer bands like Cempopoloah and Shataan. Raw, hand-dubbed black metal. Production be damned.

    Whoa.

Seems like I missed this: Ulver released their new album Messe I.X–VI.X last week in order to forestall a leak or something.

So guess what I'm getting right now.

And yeah, I'm getting it soonish.

Apparently, my 5 years old daughter likes punk rock (the Offspring).
I could say that this tells how much my daughters is cool.
My father could have said that this tells a lot about the quality level of punk rock.
Yeah, music is a matter of point of views.

    Howdy, folks. Been a while.

Anyone got any deece 2013 death metal and black metal recommendations? I've fallen pretty far behind this year on that front. The less melodic the death metal, the better, but with black metal the sky is the limit.

Faulty's got a list of black metal right at the top of the page. I've only gone through like half of it but some of it's pretty good.

    My list goes like
    Summoning's Old Mornings Dawn
    Peste Noir's Peste Noir
Thrawsunblat's Wanderer on the Continent of Saplings
    Vreid's Welcome Farewell
    Ereb Altor's Fire Meets Ice
    Manegarm's Legions of the North

Those are my ones worth talking about. And it goes without saying: it's all some variation of black metal.

I just wanted to post this great new band to see what people think. It sort of straddles the line between prog rock and prog metal depending on the song; I'd compare it to Opeth's Heritage mixed with some Steven Wilson.

Era One & Lesson in Magic #1 is a sort of extra side album by Vorph and Xy. Lesson in Magic #1 is the instrumental side, with very different stuff than usual on it. It's pretty good.

I like when metal artists turn to electronics now and then. It seems to turn out mostly interesting. I still happen to like Mortiis' electronic stuff.

This is a thing I support.

Edit: Okay, so I got the new Turisas. Took a while for some reason. It's... odd. It's so not at all like the previous ones. I swear it's like they're channeling Abba or something. There's still a few good bits, though. But, dunno. I just want another Varangian Way. Is that too much to ask.

It's hard being primarily into death metal and black metal on the internet. Power metal and symphonic seems to be everyone else's bag and I can't stand that crap. And when they are into death metal it's that melodic stuff like Opeth which is as dull as anything.

I'm bitter and listening to Carcass, what do you want from me?

...huh. While *I* tend to find that the internet is saturated with death metallers. And I've also had some very interesting conversations about black metal on various forums and sites.

Also the only good Opeth is Damnation. Heh.

I tend to stay away from the symph crowd. Not that I don't like the stuff (I most certainly do), but those people tend to be such rabid zealots, who all think that Nightwish was the sole reason Man was put on earth. Makes my brain feel icky.
