Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Okay, one last question about the CR. My creature doesn't actually have 8 katanas and rending, it's technically a 3 HD creature with one katana but always travels in groups of 8, and it can only rend if it and one other of its kind strikes the same opponent in one round. So I'd need the CR for one of them, but should I also include the CR for an encounter with 8 of them? I know you're not supposed to just add all of the CRs together, but I forget how the heck it's actually done...

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
2 of CR X have a combined CR of (X+2)
So 8 CR 3's is
4 EL 5's
2 EL 7's
for a grand total of EL 9... technically... BUT this fails to include the problem that 1 of these is much less dangerous than 2 or more since you get exponentially increasing (and starting from zilch) chance of the Rend coming off... (not that I have looked at your entry (since you haven't posted it_ yet...)Last edited by DracoDei; 2008-02-05 at 11:51 AM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I'm not sure if it has any info on setting CR for such symbiotic-like creatures, but I think MMV dealt with stuff like that. I think I remember it having creatures that got weaker or strong depending on others around it, but I'm not sure.
By the way, I finally came up with an idea while in class today, so I went ahead with it. I tried to think of what I know about traditional Oriental culture, but realized that the only thing I knew was that silk came from the Far East. So, I followed that up and made the Monstrous Silk Worm. I don't actually know anything about silk bugs, so I don't know if it's biologically correct, but it seems decent to me. It's close to finished (and I already posted it), but there'll be some tweaks forthcoming.Last edited by RTGoodman; 2008-02-06 at 02:44 PM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Okay, "The Eight Brothers" is up. I'm still confused about the CR, though. I wrote the individual CR, which I think is fairly appropriate, but I calculated the CR for 8 of them at approximately CR 10, and a group of 10th level characters would wreck these guys, especially with spells. A little help?
Well, at least you can now get a good idea of what I was going for..."Playing D&D is a lot like having a venereal disease. Whenever I date a girl, there's always going to be that point in our relationship where I have to be up front and tell her that I play Dungeons & Dragons. And that will definitely have a lasting impact on how/if our relationship progresses."

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I pulled my creature for the time being. I feel it needs a near-total overhaul, so I will post it after some brutal editting and proofreading.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Fixed some minor issues, added some images. If they are to heavy tell me and I'll eliminate them.
To TheEscapist: give your creatures the right CR for every single one of them (to xp calculation), but mention the total encouter level since you get them in the whole pack.Last edited by Caracol; 2008-02-06 at 09:05 AM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I kinda want to make something and enter, but I have some questions/concerns.
1. What do you consider Oriental? Is India good enough?
2. Does it have to be traditionally Oriental, or can it spring from recent Oriental Past?
3. How much Oriental Theme has to be inherent in the creature? Can just the Fluff text be Oriental, with the Crunch something that can be applied to non-Oriental campaigns as well?

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I'm going and counting anything eastern asia as oriental, so India is fine, and one of the entries is indian in origin.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Okay, now I've got a version of The Eight Brothers up there that I'm pretty happy with. Take a look.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Okay, I've added a new ability (Silk Adaptation), edited some stats, and added a final plot hook for the Monstrous Silk Worm. Besides maybe changing the haiku (not sure about that yet), I'd say it's pretty much done, unless any of you fine folks have any suggestions, comments, questions, or anything. I look forward to comments and criticism.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Gah! As I post my entry I realize the guy right above me posted one about swords too. >.<
Well... mine is different!
Expect edits, I'm not quite sure if I'm done.
Also, think the CR is good?“Sometimes, immersed in his books, there would come to him
the awareness of all that he did not know, of all that he had not read;
and the serenity for which he labored was shattered as he realized the
little time he had in life to read so much, to learn what he had to know.”

Ok, turns out I'm probably not going to make that Typhoon elemental. Not enough time currently. Somebody else can if they want to, but PM me when you finish so I can use it at some point.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
To Vaynor: the samurai's ritual suicide to die honorably is the seppuku, while the hara kiri is its corrispective for common people. They are slightly different in the execution (harakiri is a sword thrust in the middle of your belly, while seppuku is a cut across your belly, often followed by a beheading performed by another samurai that assists the suicide). The "purification" concept is more associated with the seppuku rather than the harakiri, the former is more ritualized and reserved for samurais, while the latter is just a (gory) way to end your life.

Incidently, check back to the Wing Dragons... they now have a picture to go with them (not to mention someone did a picture for the winner of that contest, the... Storm Serpent?... I think it was.).

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
given the kirin comes from folklore and its an orrigional take on it?
thats like saying no-one can submit an Oni because several have been done. or no animated swords because they've been in at least one monster manual or campain setting.Last edited by Mal666; 2008-02-14 at 03:57 AM.
