Adding skills to a multi-classed character

This must seem like a very silly question, but I cant find a straight answer anywhere.

But how does this work?

Mainly about the Maximum amount of ranks you can have in a cross classed skill, expecially (lets say, fighter/wizard) who has ride as a class skill for fighter but not for wizard, lets say fighter 3 wizard 5, is there a formula for it?

Im so confused, if anyone can give me a complete low-down on it (or a website that can) Id appreciate it heaps.

Max ranks as if it was class for all your character levels.

Purchase ranks at each level like normal for the class.

So the fighter 3/ wizard 5 can have 11 ranks in ride, but the ones he gains while gaining wizard levels take 2 skill points each.
