Default Fall of Zarus - OoC

Ladies, Gentlemen, Weird Fish Things, welcome to our OoC! We have a few pieces of business to get to, so I’ll dive right in.

First, a reminder as to what’s going on:
Amongst the deities of the world of Masfar, few are feared so much as Zarus. He is the one true god of the human race, a conqueror, a slaver, a tyrant. Over the past three hundred years, the church of Zarus has spread throughout the lands of humanity, driving more people to crusade against the monstrous races, becoming more and more vile in its rhetoric. The other demihumanoids watched, but did nothing, reasoning that Zarus only desired the conquest of monsters and beasts, and that they would not be touched.

    They were wrong.

First, the orcs of the Wildwind Plains found themselves under attack. Having eliminated much of the continent’s monstrous population, the Zarites marched across the Plains, destroying any tribe they found. Those that survived the initial Crusade were enslaved. Thus did the armies of Zarus continue across the continent of Ulru, devastating the gnomes, the Halflings, the dwarves, and finally, breaking down the mighty gates of Dawnguard, and burning the capital city of the elves to the ground.

One hundred years have passed since Zarus’ First Crusade. The Rhodan Empire now controls almost all of the lands of Ulru, with but a few enclaves of free creatures living in wandering groups, or hidden villages. The Drake’s Spine, a cold and remote mountain range in the far north of Ulru. The Shadelands, former residence of one of the world’s oldest liches. The Labyrinth, originally made to imprison some ancient evil, now ironically one of the last bastions of hope. Ash, the burnt out remains of the brilliant city of Dawnguard. These places, and others like them, are where the forces of resistance meet, and speak in hushed whispers. The humans of Rhodan may have forgotten what it was like, before the coming of Zarus, but many of you still remember. Perhaps, somehow, you might bring back those days, and free Ulru from the iron grip of the First Man. Or perhaps, like so many before you, you will fail.

But time enough to ponder what the future holds when it comes. For now, you find yourself on your travels in the Deep Pits, a twisting series of tunnels and caverns, left over from old dwarves mines which have gone dry. It is one of the few permanent settlements of non-humans which isn’t under constant attack and scrutiny by the Zarites, and is ruled by one of the oldest living dragons, a Black Wyrm by the name of Gahriar. Your reasons for being here are your own. But Gahriar tires of being trapped beneath the earth, and she is hatching a plan, a plan you may soon be a part of…
Troubling things indeed. Here’s a snapshot of the world as it stands, as well as some of the key players in the coming conflict:

The Rhodan Empire: You know these folks all too well. Once a small kingdom in comparison to the rest of the world, Rhodan was a place without a god. Or rather, all gods were welcomed there. You would find a temple to Pelor next to a den promised to Olidammarra, and a crypt of Nerull three blocks away. When Zarus found purchase amongst the human royal family of Rhodan, the kingdom started pulling other small human kingdoms into its realm of influence. What happened next…well, you know.

Now the Rhodan Empire covers most of the surface of Ulru, aside from a few broken places no human would ever choose to live. There are several thorns in its side, but the war is over, and things are mostly clean up now.

Leading humanity is, nominally, His Royal Majesty Robert Dereth Smith the Gentle, Emperor of Rhodan, Khan of the Wildwind Plains, Prince of the Greenvelt Forest and Master of Drakes. Robert is but a lad of seventeen, his late father Harold Unra Smith having been slain during the siege of Dawnguard. By all human accounts, Robert is a kind and gentle soul, caring deeply for his people, even showing mercy to many of those bastard elves who slew his own father, and a devout follower of Zarus. Everyone with a lick of sense knows, however, that the real power in Rhodan is Colombo Vittorio D’Camillo, better known as the Voice of Zarus. He is the highest ranking member of Zarus’ church, and while by the laws of Rhodan he holds no true political power, no one is closer to the young king, and it is known that Colombo is the one who makes all important decisions - all for the further glory of Rhodan and Zarus, of course. It is also known that Colombo has four servants, the Hands of Zarus, each of whom has power on par with an army. Their true identities are shrouded in mystery, as well as what form that power takes. But all live in fear of them, even humans.

Blackwood Forest: A massive swath of trees that fills the northeast corner of Ulru, this land was formerly the Greenvelt Forest. All manner of Fey, spirits, and other creatures lived among the trees, and the elves ruled the Forest from their mighty tree-cities. Dawnguard was its shinning capital, where it is said the greatest of the elves would keep watch until dawn rose, to protect the sun from any who might take it. Now, Dawnguard is no more, and the forest mourns for what has been done to it. What was once lush, fertile ground is now overgrown with weeds and thorns, and the trees have lost their green foliage, turning into twisted, blackened mockeries. Even the old city has risen in a mockery of its old beauty, as the ruin Ash. The elves, thrown into despair and rage at what has happened, have forsaken their old titles of “high”, “wood”, “wild”, and “sun”. Now there is only the Ashen Elves, who are focused entirely on vengeance. Their leader, insofar as they have one, is the mage Brukket, who delves into deeper and darker secrets in the recently uncovered archives within the root system of Ash’s old home-tree.

The Labyrinth: An ancient structure in the very south of Ulru, no one is sure who built the Labyrinth, or why. It is a constantly shifting maze, filled with traps of every kind, larger inside than the outer walls would suggest. The Zarites have launched many expeditions to try and find the center, but none have ever returned, in part due to the efforts of Malog and Gideon VII. Malog is a Minotaur, said to be the Labyrinth’s original guardian. Only he can safely navigate the twisting paths of the maze, and he frequently leads refugees to the small settlement which is ruled by Gideon VII. Gideon VII is an Inevitable, one of the few unique designs the factories of Mechanus have produced. Appearing as a series of concentric circles surrounded by a multitude of clockwork wings, Gideon VII facilitates communication between the various leaders of the resistance. The designation of the Inevitable has raised many questions, as its stated directive is to “Correct the imbalance of power on the Prime Material Plane” (Why VII? Have there been six Gideons before this? Has the Prime Material faced such an imbalance before this? Were all prior Gideons destroyed by the Zarites?). However, regarding its own past, as well as the pasts of any previous incarnations, Gideon VII remains silent.

Heddwch’s Reach: The old dwarven city which lies above the Deep Pits. Named for the famous dwarf architect Heddwch, the city was one of the first to fall after the Zarites crossed the Wildwind Plains. Everything of value was taken from the city proper, but many dwarves and other creatures were able to escape into the deeper caverns. The humans, not thinking anything could actually survive so far from the sun, left it be. Now Heddwch’s Reach is a ghost city, utterly devoid of life. Below the initial caves, carefully hidden wards disguise any sound coming from the Deep Pits, and discourage surface-dwellers from inspecting too closely. This is where Gahriar dwells, scheming and plotting with the help of the surviving dwarf rune lords. Also here is Madoc Morris, last surviving heir of the dwarven high kings. He refuses to take his title, saying that until his people are free, he does not deserve to be counted among his forbearers.

In addition to these places, several nomadic bands of monsters roam the Drake’s Spine, a long mountain range that stretches from the northern most reaches of the Blackwood Forest to the western sea, the Shadelands, a swampy, rotting place in the southeast, and the edges of the Wildwind Plains. Heddwch’s Reach is technically inside the borders of the Rhodan Empire, with a large military town named Blackstone about three days by horse from the city gates, as is the Labyrinth.

Now, a logistical thing. I was recently invited by a very dear friend to spend a week with their family at a beach house up in Maine. They mean a great deal to me, and I of course accepted. This does pose a small problem however, as I have no guarantee that I will have access to the Internet while there, and even if I do, my posting would be sporadic during that time. So, we have a choice. We can begin right away, with the knowledge that I will have to be absent for a week starting the 26th. Or we can wait to properly begin until my return. I leave that decision up to you, dear players.

    Now, to reintroduce our cast!

The illustrious Lord Bayushi, playing Nevek’Jethixur the Nomad Aboleth.

The cunning Vertharrad, playing Gulklyreth the skillful Drider.

The masterful Silver Night, playing Reacher Wordsmith, the story-keeping Avolakia.

The steady Prehysterical, playing Nigel, the chefly Troll.

The wily whoiam, playing Ascent-Of-Man, the repentant Succubus.

And lastly, the gentle Rendel Nep, playing Gilbert Founderson, the knightly pixie.

You, brave warriors and cunning mages, are monster kind’s last hope. Choose your speech color, and begin discussing. You’ll need every advantage, every secret, every last scrap of power if you hope to overcome Zarus, the First Man. I wish you the best of luck.

    And now…the game begins.

Don't think I've ever been the Wily one before

I'm happy starting now or later, although I'd prefer that we start now but you leave us in a position where the party can talk amongst themselves for the week you're gone. It's a good chance for those characters who don't already know each other well to get used to each other.

Ascent-of-Man will speak in flesh-tones... well, her flesh-tone, anyway.

I wouldn't mind getting the ball rolling. Violet will be good for Gilbert and I wouldn't worry about lacking a rogue, we've probably got enough magic to cover for their specialty and if not we could always hire another someone. Gilbert might need someone to do his carrying for him anyway.

The place we're going to be shortest is trapfinding. But even there we're not completely uncovered, as a combination of Find Traps, Detect Magic and Troll First ought to get us through most things that aren't the Tomb of Horrors :)

I shall use Magenta - but now I'm almost late for work, so I will have more when I get back. I also vote for getting started, and just talking among ourselves while you're gone.

Edit: In fact, perhaps a compromise where our characters are simply in the same place so they can get to know each other before the game starts properly, and then thing can get rolling when you get back.

Looking forward to this game I'm even logging in on my phone!

Edit2: Summon Monster I and Knock can go a long way towards covering the lack of a rogue. Or Reacher can use Animate Dead and pour zombies on the problem, I suppose.

Edit3: Copy of the big 16 for future reference:

    Spoiler: Dat Big 16
    Show
    1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)?
    Dungeons and Dragons, 3.5

    2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?
    Gestalt, Monstrous

    3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?
    Six

    4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?
    These here forums, pardner.

    5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?
We’ll start at Effective Character Level 11, but see Notes.

    6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
Wealth by Level for a Level 11 character. This can be found in the Dungeon Master’s Guide, on Page 135.

    7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
Per the OP’s wishes, no homebrew. Other than that, tell me what you’re using.

    8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
As above, but also see Notes.

    9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
Ability Scores: Choose between rolling two sets of seven 4d6b3, losing the lowest score of the set you choose, or a 32 Point Buy. Once you choose, you must use the method you have chosen.
Hit Points: Max at first level, then decide between average or rolled for each level after.

    10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
Our game will be a heroic one. Saving the world, overcoming adversity, etc. Within that framework, as long as you can work with your fellow characters, be of any alignment you wish.

    11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
Multiclassing rules are stupid. Do as you will without penalty.

    12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
Roll any active rolls you wish in the IC thread, under an OoC spoiler. I will be making some rolls in open, and some rolls in secret.

    13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.
    Not really, but see Notes.

    14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
I really like character backgrounds. In this game especially, think about what it means to be whatever creature you are. What makes them different than humans? What makes them, in their essence, Monstrous? Let me get a sense of what this creature’s culture is like.

    15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
Hopefully, the game will be mostly equal parts combat and roleplaying, with some puzzle solving when appropriate.

    16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
I have most of the usual sources people ask for, as well as some pretty obscure ones. No homebrew, as has been mentioned before, but otherwise just tell me what you’re using and where you’re getting it from if it’s outside of Core and Completes. If I have it, and it doesn’t cause reality to fold in on itself, you should be good.

Nevek will speak in an earthy tan color. Though not rogue-y, it does have some skill at fooling the senses of others, and it can always dominate a rogue for the good of the mission. It does fill a ranger-y role fairly well, able to help us survive the wilderness, as well as being able to move the party around long distances.

Point of order: I haven't inspected the sheets for the other characters carefully (I tend not to, it makes me feel uncomfortable in the same way as going through a woman's purse even when asked to), so I don't know if there is anyone that has Remove Disease, Heal, or Mass Heal. If not, then I need to know that we, as a party, are incapable of curing my character's slime affliction. It would be more reluctant to use it if the damage could not be undone.

On a player only note, I'm very happy with the group that made it in. You all strike me as good role players, and I like the time and effort that you have put into the game to this point, and I'm glad to be a part of it with you.

Just to drop a warning: this weekend will be a bit crazy for me in RL, so my posting will suffer until Monday. I will try to keep up, please don't slow things down to wait on me.

Reacher doesn't have any of those, and it is unlikely to obtain them. Though it has a high enough UMD that if we got a scroll or something it could use it most likely.

Edit: In fact, Reacher wouldn't be able to fail using a scroll of remove disease

We do have a party member with full cleric casting (Gilbert - Cleric/Church Inquisitor on one side of his build). Should be able to rustle up at least one of those.

He's half the length of a bus but that's he has in common. He's also asexual hermaphrodite but we don't have the pronouns.

Hermaphrodite, which is a little different. Now, Reacher, I don't even...

Edit: Speaking or pronouns, once the game starts, Reacher can just use whichever apply to the form it happens to be in. Which makes things less confusing, since 'it' is used for lots of other things too.

Yeah, I can't imagine mutagenic slime is good on naked skin, even if the skin belongs to a 9000 year old wavering incarnation of evil.

While this is true, I can totally imagine Ascent, back in the days before she took on that name, looking at that slime and thinking "I so need to sell this to some noblewomen as a beauty treatment. I'll get money and lose most of my competition for the noblemen. It's win-win!"

Succubi were never very far from being Snake-Oil salesmen anyway. After all, they're all pulling the same basic trick - playing on your desires to get you to ignore your sense so you'll agree to something that you know, deep down, you should never have touched. The major difference is probably that Succubi were more likely to be honest about what it was they were selling you!

Well, starting to look like we will be sticking with OOC for the first little while here. Do we know how long everyone has been in the Deep Pits? I figure it is probably a common rest stop for those of our characters who spend time fighting Zarusites. I'm thinking that Reacher might have been there for a week or so already, maybe even slightly longer, as a break in her* travels.

*Reacher is currently using the form of a female gnome, as a matter of convenience. Large isn't always the size to be in the depths of the tunnels, I'd think.

So the general consensus seems to be that time to chat and get to know each other would be good. In that vein, feel free to head over to the new and shinny IC. Feel free to explore, to find the others, to chat. Noontide won't occur until I return from my week at the beach, unless there is an overwhelming desire on your part to get on with it.

Demon form, naked except for her Handy Haversack, amulet, circlet, and signet ring. Unless the party ask her to start dressing, it's something she only bothers doing when pretending to be mortal... and she's currently making a big show of being honest with her new allies...

Well, nudity is a sign symbol of honesty in some cultures. Also, Reacher is in the tunnels near the dragon's lair, but not immediately outside it, for anyone who might be running into her.
