    Default Force Magic

    Hey all!
I am without my multitudes of source books (for now) so I figured you all were the next best thing, hehe. I have a player who is wanting to play a mage that uses primarily force magic. Are there any good prestige classes or feats that would compliment his character well? References along with any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Complete Arcane, page 24 - Argent Savant. 5-level prestige class. You lose one caster level (bad), but you gain special abilities.

Check Complete Arcane and Complete Mage in general, and Spell Compendium for a lot of force spells (many imaginatively named force x).

Master of the Unseen Hand (CA) is the one that springs to mind - a telekinesis specialist. Abjurant Champion (CM) may fit the idea too. Wizard is fine on it's own though ;)

EDIT: I think Argent Savant is what I was thinking of, but losing caster level = bad :(

Losing one caster level isn't that bad. If you're a force spell specialist, you're not optimized anyway.

I tend to think that if you're going with a non-optimal theme you need to give up as little else as possible to remain viable. I'm playing a light-themed mage on these boards, and yes, she has direct damage spells (*gasp*). I know this isn't optimal, and I'm not going to worsen the situation by becoming even more sub-optimal ;)

Yeah my suggestion to him already was to just tailor his spell list to force spells, but I'll definately have to look into those you've already suggested for him, when I'm able to get back to my books anyways...
    Thanks guys!

Orb of Force is one of the most utilitarian damage spells ever - make sure he gets it. A lot.

Some 'good' force effect Spells by level:
1: Magic Missile (PHB), Unseen Servant (PHB) Mage Armor (PHB)
    2. Blast of Force (Spell Compendium)
    3. Manyjaws (Spell Compendium), Greater Mage Armor (PHB)
    4. Orb of Force (Complete Arcane)
    5. Wall of Force, Bigby's Interposing Hand (both PHB)
    6. Bigby's Forceful Hand (PHB)
    7. Forcecage (PHB)
    8. Otiluke's Telekinetic Sphere (PHB)
    9. Bigby's Crushing Hand (PHB)

Don't forget spells like persistent blade.

    Bad ass combo:
Throw up a telekinetic bubble (level 4 or 8), then toss out persistent blades, summons, & other indirect fire spells from the protection of your nigh-indestructable fortress. Always take dimension door if you plan to use this combo.
Three things to remember about D&D:
    1. Always go right. It's right, after all.
    2. If it's not a party member, it's just XP.
    3. D&D is the only game where you really can kill first and ask questions later.

There's a Force Missile Mage PrC in Dragon #328. It may be of interest to you.

I believe Force Missile Mage made it into the Dragon Compendium. So you can check that out, too.

If you're a sorceror grab Wings of Flurry from Races of the Dragon. 4th Level force spell that hits an area, dazes, and has no damage cap.

    Prerequisite
Int 17 or elf, Knowledge (arcana) 12 ranks.
Benefit: Your understanding of the elven secrets of magic grants you two benefits. When you cast dispel magic or greater dispel magic, you gain a +2 bonus on your caster level check Your understanding of magic allows you to more easily unravel the power that sustains a foe's spell.
In addition, your knowledge of magic grants you rare insights into forgotten spell lore. Choose a single spell in your spellbook when you take this fear. When preparing that spell, you can alter the type of damage it deals to a single type of your choice. You must make this choice when preparing the spell (those who do not prepare spells cannot benefit from this aspect of the fear). You can prepare the spell multiple times, selecting the same or a different energy type for it with each preparation.
Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. The caster level bonus does not stack, and each time you take the feat, a different spell must be chosen.

Lets say you choose orb of fire, so you do 15d6 damage. With elven spell lore you can modify the damage to force.

That isn't a bad spell, (Spell resistance though )

    Does some math.

Rogue 1/Sorc 4/Spellwarp Sniper 5/Unseen Seer 10. (The spell is spell warp able if you want to remove the reflex save for a guranteed hit against a rogue). Combine with Arcane Thesis.
    Lvl 4+Empower (1)+Maximize (2)=Lvl 7 Spell
20 Caster Level Base (After Practiced Spellcaster)
    2 Arcane Thesis
    1 Ring of Arcane Might
    1 Ioun Stone
    24 Caster Level

24d6=144*1.5=216 Force Damage for a 7th lvl spell in a burst or ray target.+Sneak Attack

    20 Caster Level
    3 Unseen Seer
    1 Ring of Arcane Might
    1 Ioun Stone
25 Caster Level, Thus Hunter's Eye gives 8d6 Bonus Sneak Attack
    1d6(Rogue)+8d6(Hunter's Eye)+2d6(Spell Warp Sniper)+4d6(Unseen Seer)=15d6 Sneak Attack

Thus you will do a total of 268.5 average damage (force+precision) per a single target, or a 30 foot burst with this one spell (it dazes if you do the burst).

Another option is to be a Ghost with levels in Master of the Unseen Hand. You can use your uber Telekinesis as a spell like ability every 1d4 rounds, plus you have all sorts of other useful abilities.
