Re: A character body slammed the ground.
Ask for a fumble confirmation roll, then tell him that the ground body slams him.
Or, alternatively, just slap the player across the face with a glove. If a cute girl with a red sash and overalls on slips you a note, ignore it, forget it, and sic the police on her.
You receive ten fail points. You may spend them as you see fit.

Re: A character body slammed the ground.
I don't think he needed to make an attack roll to 'body slam' the ground. As long as it wasn't more than 10 feet a drop, he shouldn't take any lethal damage; at your discretion, maybe you could give him 1d6 in subdual damage.
If you really want to see if he 'fumbled' however, just do as the DMG says and make him make a DC 10 Dexterity Check, and decide punishment from there if he fails.

Re: A character body slammed the ground.
He threw himself to the ground. He missed. Now he's flying.
Go from there.

I second Khantalas' assessment, particularly if the character's name is Arthur

Woah... he's lucky... He didn't even need someone with an incredible body/opinion to jump out and display/explain it to him in mid air.

Re: A character body slammed the ground.
*sigh* reminds me of the time I had to make a to hit role to commit suicide in a game. . . and missed. *sigh*
concur with fans of Arthur Dent, he missed the ground, so he's flying. While he's at it, introduce him to a re-incarnating flower pot and a whale.
I think I'll regret this, but may I ask. . . exactly why was he trying to break the ground? If there is some remotely legitimate reason why he should do so (for example, he's trying to open a secret hatch in the floor) then just deal some damage to him, say 1d4 + his STR bonus. If he's just being stupid, then up the damage to 1d10 + 2x his STR bonus. Eventually he'll stop. *sigh*The first person who mentions "maturity" while we are discussing a complex game of "pretend" . . . loses.

Re: A character body slammed the ground.
If he's trying to smash through something, then call it a strength check. He failed, and is probably stunned for a moment, but it shouldn't deal any damage.
If that's not the situation, then I don't know what it is ("it" here refers to "the situation").Last edited by Scribbler; 2007-04-16 at 12:27 AM.

I don't know why he broke the ground. I'm so serious it hurts.

What would be the strength check required to break a planet?

Re: A character body slammed the ground.
Does the character in question have Improved Unarmed Strike? If not, the ground should get an attack of opportunity.

Re: A character body slammed the ground.
if you're attacking the ground and miss, a less "he's flying" solution would be that he missed the square he was standing on, then roll to determine which square he hit instead such as with the "thrown splash weapon" effects (give him a range increment of 5 ft only)

Re: A character body slammed the ground.
Sorta related to missing the ground, I actually made a character once that misses the ground every single time. He even has that unlucky flaw that makes natural 20s count as natural 1s.

Re: A character body slammed the ground.
If he body slams the ground, he should takes falling damage. Make it 1 Point.
It is a joyful thing indeed to hold intimate converse with a man after one’s own heart, chatting without reserve about things of interest or the fleeting topics of the world; but such, alas, are few and far between.
