    Default Superhero LARP

Something about this strikes me as extremely funny for some reason. Maybe it's the idea of seeing my friends in spandex outfits.

Has anyone ever done this or even heard about anyone doing it? I wonder how it would play out, especially when things like flight, wall crawling, and super speed would be tough to simulate.

I don't believe I've ever seen this happen, but I imagine that it would function a lot like magic in a lot of other LARPs. If your character has ice powers, then to shoot ice you would probably shout "Ice Bolt" and point your finger at your opponent, and to make armor, then you probably would shout "Ice Armor" and tape a blue piece of felt to your clothes. Speed powers would probably involve all the players holding still except for you (which could get annoying). Invisibility is wearing a certain color. Wall crawling would probably be climbing walls only accessible by certain players. If you wanted to go way beyond the budget that most LARPs get, then you could hook up a flying rig (like the kind used for actors) in certain areas to simulate flight or super-jumping.

Actually, this sounds like it could be a lot of fun. The hardest part would probably be getting a group of people together and a decent budget to pull it off.

Also, although I enjoy LARP, there's a lot of people on this forum that abhor the very concept of it worse than the greatest amounts of dripping hatred spewed forth from the horrific hating maws spawning from the darkest, most hatred-enriched pits of Hades, just so you're aware. I don't expect this thread to get much further than these few posts.

Yeah, it's what every vampire LARP inevitably turns into :P

Also, people, who object to LARP; your arguments are invalid:

I can't imagine superhero LARP would be any sillier than "normal" LARP.

And then you got those crazies who LARP their way into the Ghetto in superhero outfits and masks looking for real crime to fight.

Seattle police are getting a bit antsy about people putting themselves in unnecessary danger. A group of superheroes outside a gas station in ski masks didn't bode well with authorities, and one dressed in all black was almost shot running out of a dark park. Phoenix claims he was stabbed "while trying to intervene with a drug dealer and a citizen." Why do they risk it? "Because someone's gotta do something," the author of RLSH says.

The top one with the band of orcs could be Empire, a British LARP that's really gone in for high quality kit, especially for their monsters.

The bottom one I've no idea, but Mark Cordory is an amazing special effects LARP guy.

Darn, I was hoping that it would be at least semi-local. Still, glad to see there are still some groups out there really trying to keep the LARP scene alive. I looked at Cordory's stuff and I'm quite impressed!

It's a shame that my local group, IFGS, has pretty much died out on account that they couldn't adapt the system to the new generation, and so people didn't think it was worth it to write games anymore.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a LARP that allows vehicles in the field, but then again, all my local LARPs rent out campsites up in the mountains for space. Segways do not work very well in mud and on rocks, and that sounds like a good way to get someone hurt.

I guess they could also pull it off with the 'evasion' technique, in which a player carries a certain colored flag which indicates that they are moving at super speed and are immune to damage for a certain length of time.

Here in Ireland we have the terrifyingly popular Higher Powers. Higher Powers originated as an attempt by the GMs to say if they could run a super-powers LARP. They have succeeded beyond their wildest imaginations. The game takes pains to fulfil all the comic-book tropes it can, up to and including the resurrection of a beloved character (An event which blindsided the player base so well that one player has a five-minute gap in his memory during which he had been escorted to a chair and carefully sat down while he mentally rebooted from the shock.)

This fills me with such inexplicable joy. I don't even LARP, but I knew it had to be possible.

Bottom pic is from Mythlore - also based in the UK.

Too bad the orcs forgot to do their arms, though.

Ah, of course, I see the attribution now.

The orcs are monster crew rather than players, so I'll cut that guy some slack for missing his arm.

The last time I was in a LARP with vampires in it most of the vampires ended up being pretty super powered by the end. The only one I remember clearly could run incredibly fast, had plainly ridiculous abilities with a knife, and had an extra dimensional coat capable of holding an armored car and an entire mountain of Nazi gold. If the GM's are generous with XP you can get some pretty crazy abilities.

Both of the photos are from Empire, a UK LARP (Although I believe the Titan in the second photo has been re-used in a few different games.)

As to why Vampire turns into supers, I think there is a reason beyond the kewl powerz that vampires get for some reason. In tabletop, it's fairly easy to run a serious game, because players can blow off steam and joke about in between scenes. In a LARP, there is an expectation that players will be IC for long periods, and in my experience, that's more likely to produce snarky, self aware characters than the po faced Machiavellian schemers the fiction encourages. Also, the limitations of the format mean the refs are going to come up with Monster of the Week style bad guys to deal with. And the guy with mirror shades who quips after killing the werewolf with his katana and his super-speed is much closer to a 90s superhero than a vampire.

The attribution in the lower right hand corner says it's from Mythlore:New Lands 3. Mark is the man behind the game, as well as an awesome prop-maker.
