EMPIRE!
Gods, Kings & Adventurers
A Community World-Building Game Created by Morph Bark
IC thread: Action!
Dice-Rolling thread: Dice!
Event Suggestion Thread: Suggest!
Welcome to EMPIRE! A game of gods, kings and adventurers. In this game, you will play a character, a ruler of a region. And once s/he dies, you will play their heir and so on, continuing on the family legacy. You scheme, discover and conquer your way towards becoming the most-remembered person in history. Respected, loved, feared.
This world will start as a simple one similar to the times of the Middle Ages, but through the actions of players and random events the scope of the world will expand, science marches on and magic may even be introduced. Magic is rare, though monsters may be abound in players’ regions, strange natural resources or the crafts of alchemy may be at their use and supernatural phenomena can take place.
Best beware if you want to ensure your legacy.
Be warned! This is primarily a game of world-building, but contains some strategic elements, secretive scheming, and both cooperation and vehement competition between players at times. It's all easy enough to understand once you've read through the rules, and GREAT fun to play in and talk with all your co-world-builders in this thread, but keep in mind that in the game itself, IC, it can be a very bumpy ride. Let us ask questions, help each other, communicate, cooperate, build and have fun OOC, even as we bash each other's brains in IC.
Also, if you have a question, and you can ask a player (about their region or people, for instance), ask them instead of the GM. If you can ask it in the thread, do that instead of via PM. The GM's PM inbox is regularly cleared and thus things can easily get lost, so try keep it to secret stuff and (IC) reactions to stuff you get in your own inbox.
The World & Joining the Game
The WorldSpoiler
The World as It Is Known, called Arandi in the trade tongue though known by many and sundry names is one which sits on the brink of greatness. It is the year 100 of the new age, one hundred years have passed since the last gasp of the final mighty empire and tribes, peoples, and kingdoms lost, new, and dormant now stand ready to rise up and claim their place in this world.
Across the world rumors buzz of magic, an art thought long lost may be returning to holy men and to those willing to pay the proper dues. Armies the likes of which have not been seen for centuries drill and train. Tinkerers and inventors celebrate an unbridled time of innovation and technology once more seems ready to lurch forward from stagnation and monarchs, councils, and statesmen begin their first forays into the stage of the wider world.
Arandi hosts three existing religious institutions that a nation may choose to ascribe to in the beginning of the game.
The House of the Pale Lady is the center of the followers of the Pale Lady whose domain of death, rebirth, challenge, and rewards to the virtuous appeals to some of the more hardened men and women of Arandi. Her followers often wear white and cover their faces during religious rituals. Religious rites are seen as the duty of women more than men though both serve in the clergy. The physical House of the Pale Lady sits on the border of Regions 266, 268, and 269. The House of the Pale Lady sees the Doctrine of the Nine Candles as an inoffensive spiritual option in limited exposure and the Grand Church of Daen as a threatening and dangerous power willing to declare holy war for political gain.
The House of the Pale Lady has taken a more active political role in the northeastern continent and has worked with multiple kingdoms to encourage and promote a welfare of all Pale Lady adherent kingdoms.
The Doctrine of the Nine Candles is a spiritual philosophy that espouses the importance of nine virtues: Kindness, Mindfulness, Determination, Purity, Charity, Insight, Fulfillment, Honor, and a ninth, personal virtue said to be known individually to each follower of the Doctrine. Light, especially candles, play an important spiritual role for followers of the Doctrine. The Doctrine has no physical center, practitioners of its teachings often individualistic wanderers who teach their philosophy to those willing to listen be they king or commoner. Within the Doctrine it is considered taboo to share your ninth virtue with an outsider and even among followers of the Doctrine, to share it is a sign of great trust. Followers of the Doctrine generally see the House of the Pale Lady and the Grand Church of Daen as potential alternate paths to enlightenment.
The Doctrine has recently undergone a civil war within its ranks between those wishing to embrace war and those wishing to embrace peace. Ultimately the peaceful followers of the Ninth Peace won the support of the majority of followers and constructed a temple to begin administering from as a centralized religion though the militant Ninth Struggle continues on as a splinter faction within the Doctrine.
The Grand Church of Daen is an organized hierarchical clergy that claims a documented history of over 500 years and involvement with some of the great empires of bygone eras. Headed by the Elder Abbot the Grand Church preaches the gospel of Daen which teaches of an all-father Lord of the Skies who watches over all of creation and is tended to and conflicted by the other lesser gods and demons. The Grand Church of Daen sees the House of the Pale Lady as a form of aggressive paganism and the Doctrine of the Nine Candles as subversive anti-authoritarians. The central of the Grand Church of Daen lies on the border between Regions 18, 100, and 134.
Recently the Grand Church has been swayed by a splinter religious faction adhering to an interpretation of Daen as a matronly goddess rather than a patriarchal father god. This has lent the Church to falling under heavier Avonlean influence .
Though these clergies exist in a recognized and organized form dating to prior the fall of the last empires there are many who have lost their teachings, rejected them, or never found them in the first place and among the rising nations of Arandi so too do alternative theologies begin to gather more support...

First of all, read this thread
Got it? Good. You may now pick the region you would like from the atlas below (first come first serve) and post your nation submission in this thread for review and approval. You are only approved if Zayuz says you're approved. Once you're approved you can post your nation in this thread and prepare to join the IC game at your leisure.
Atlas
Here is a list of regions that has been claimed and by whom. It is slightly outdated, so if you aim to take over a certain region, it is always good to double-check in the main thread (this one) whether it is taken or not.
There are more regions visible than are expected to be filled. Start adjacent to another player at your own risk (or benefit)

Little early, but I suppose with a new Head-GM, it makes sense. Also, based on the tests, I am a Hagrid.

I know I suggested the new thread, because I was kind of thinking "hey, we could ask the previous dm who wanted to step down because of workload to rewrite a lot of the OP, 'or' we could move to a new thread cause we're about 5 pages from that point anyway. Felt easier on the whole.

Ah well.
Go right ahead! We've got a thread for this exact thing that nobody uses. (The conceit of the thread is that the stories are written by chroniclers, so some inaccuracy is not only possible but expected)Last edited by HalfTangible; 2016-09-14 at 02:00 PM.

Well every NORTH Polar region
Also Tychris, a rule change was made a while back that if you don't list who commands a battle for you, it's assumed to be a secondary commander.
Also also, coming up with new rumors all throughout the round always leaves me nervous that someone's gonna miss the later ones.Last edited by HalfTangible; 2016-09-14 at 04:05 PM.

Re: EMPIRE2!-CWBG-VI-Save-The-Hufflepuffs!
This is mainly why I try to get everything done within the first few days. So it is all done, and set. It always throws me off to check an IC post, and there is nothing there but a placeholder. Why make the post if you have nothing to put in it? Having to go back later and see what, if anything, has changed, sucks.
Of course, that is just my opinion. People are free to ignore, or disagree with, it. :P

Yeah, that did go kind of funky, didn't it? Well if things go south, consider Nemeria an open haven to flee to. Obviously, my race of humans would be pretty sympathetic to humans from the south fleeing the armies of giant racist ogre mermaids.

Re: EMPIRE2!-CWBG-VI-Save-The-Hufflepuffs!
As mentioned, I have (so far) had the worst luck with rolls. So it is entirely possible that such will continue. However, if it does not, it is entirely possible to continue on as you have. At least thematically.
The original plan was to hand over 428 and 429 to an NPC. Since NPCs are now player controlled, if I do actually end up wiping you out, I could just hand them over to you and let you control the NPC. You could just spiral off saying that the aforementioned NPC was infected during all the various skirmishes and is now a lycanthrope. Of course, this would involve working together somewhat, and a certain degree of loyalty. As the NPC would be grateful to me for reclaiming his homeland, and defending it against the Horde.
Or, alternatively, you could always just seek safe haven elsewhere, and plot revengeance. Either works, I suppose. All depends on how you want to continue on.
But, as mentioned. Dice hate me. So it is entirely possible, and probably even plausible that my armies smash themselves against you and get spanked in the process.

... I mean I am too, but Primus isn't known for making the brightest decisions in diplomacy *cough*IzeleClansEmberCityFantastisticMasqueradeTh atTimeIMadeMurderingAKingTheMainEventOfTheFantasyO lympics*cough*
If you wanna do it, FD, go ahead. While they wouldn't be the mongolian werewolf horde you wanted, the Vr'kx are a lot closer to you than Primus and would probably have good reason to help build you up (I will too, but the Vr'kx would be your enemy and cause you lotsa problems)
You could also become the leader of a group of arctic werewolves.

Re: EMPIRE2!-CWBG-VI-Save-The-Hufflepuffs!
I'm doing some writeups for our new regions (to appear imminently) and there's something strange. We acquired 181 last round, but it seems that region has already been named and written up by Dimple (Samudra),
although not yet approved(edit - actually it was). It's listed as a Jagalata-controlled region in an instability table for round 19 (which may be my fault). However I also can't find any evidence that Dimple ever acquired the region or even attempted to in the actions thread - and the Cult were trying to colonise it before we grabbed it ourselves, which suggests it was empty. In fact there's not even any exploration-discovery text for 181, in either Dimple's or GM posts, that I can find.
Does anyone (Dimple? Quinton?) know what's going on with that? Were there secret actions involved? Was there a typo somewhere which led to a writeup being done for the wrong region? Did we just invade and conquer part of Jagalata?!Last edited by Aedilred; 2016-09-15 at 09:04 AM.

Re: EMPIRE2!-CWBG-VI-Save-The-Hufflepuffs!
I will move them. I didn't realize we had a new rules thread with the new GM. I will update my links.
All the polar regions in the Lands thead were listed, but there was a code error, so they were not showing. Thanks, and fixed.
I just went through the Lands thread from start to finish and linked what I found. If there were changes of ownership or lands created and not posted there, I didn't capture that. All I tried to do is provide links to the relevant thread where the lands data was captured. I changed my titles from "Owners thread" to "Posted Thread", so that I am not tracking ownership, only where to find the writeup.Last edited by lt_murgen; 2016-09-15 at 08:48 AM.

Re: EMPIRE2!-CWBG-VI-Save-The-Hufflepuffs!
Thanks for the welcome and here we go:
Spoiler: Chalced region 325BPopulation:710000Spoiler: TerrainChalced is covered in darkness, with no natural source of light. Consisting of countless caves and numberless winding cracks in the sandstone it is inhabited by the Naids. These creatures build their homes in the cave wall one level upon another, connecting them by a labyrinth of narrow pathways, to leave the warm cave floor unoccupied. This make every cave with a warm rock look like the center of a Swiss cheese. Not being the only ones depending on warm rocks this is also where a large part of Chalceds scarce wildlife is most easily seen. Although not plentiful the various animals living in the darkness are more varied than the few species of moss left, tasting too bad to be edible for most animals these can be seen growing in the whole region.
In the northeast there are about four dozen warm rocks close to each other. Simply being called the hot caverns this is the Naids capital. Being the largest of their cities the pathway network is immense, built by hundreds of individuals each adding their own paths and tunnels to the already existing ones as they feel the need it takes a lifetime to learn all the ways.Spoiler: SocietyThe Naids are a people of human lizards standing between 4 to 5 foot tall with a tail around 3 foot long. Wearing grey/brown leather clothes made from pieces of the local wildlife. Using echolocation as their sense of navigation they have ears and necks very similar to the Prevazs. As an effect they have dull skin colors ranging from dark grey to light grey. Being a reptile they are coldblooded and thus need to reheat themselves once every week as part of the heat is stored in a special organ.
The Naids live in small villages which size is determined by the size of the warm rock forming the center of the village. Most Naids strive to live as close to the bottom as possible and so also closer to the heat. The exception is the uppers. They are Naids that for some reason want to live as high up as possibly. Generally being frowned upon they are accepted in the villages as excellent help when building new houses, being the best climbers after having strived upwards their whole life.
Never having felt the urge of full scale war, usually settling disputes with diplomacy or “accidents “if the former turns out to be useless. They seem to be peaceful at the surface. Even if the “accidents” have led to a few quite unpleasant moments in history when they have been sent rapidly back and forth between parties. To lower the rate of accidents all villages are led by one or more elders chosen by the villages inhabitants. And when the whole community is affected (plague, earthquake, etc.) the elders chose one or more leaders to guide the whole population as long as needed.
When they don’t argue with each other the Naids tend to everyday things like setting traps to catch animals, building new houses/tunnels or mining coal with no apparent gender bias.Spoiler: RecoursesThe Naids are mining coal (good) to make fires to cook food and as an alternate way of keeping warm when travelling and far away from warm rocks. They are longing after something else to eat (tasty meat) than the sinewy and tasteless meet of local animals, which are the only available food in the region.Spoiler: religionThe Naids shamans walk from one village to another, keeping alive faith with oral histories about how to please the earth spirits. Both serving as moral guidance and healers for the society they often enjoy the privilege of being gifted a lower house when they visit a village.

It's probably supposed to be 481 and 181 was a typo.
325B? That's right near where I am. I play the Ancerin Empire, which is part of the Pale Empyrium consisting of myself, the Cahoosa, the Clanholds, Aardrosil, the Pale Reach and the North Hold (which are called Arakhal and Walnoth on the map respectively).
