Re: Folding@Home
Just joined in. It just may replace ProgressQuest as a stand-by program in my home computer :D
Edit: Keep advertising it on Playground. Gives such a nice extra flavour to this place.Last edited by Merlon; 2008-10-12 at 01:45 PM.

Re: Folding@Home
Now i am really convinced, that i need a new computer. I set it at the highest priority (50 % of cpu load) and still it takes it's sweet time to finish 1500-point-unit. With 9 hours, i have folded about 30% of it. The screensaver does not work either, but that just may be my OP system which should have been re-installed about 6 months ago :D

Re: Folding@Home
Too much stuff on???
As what, on hard drive or in the task manager list? The first is about 75% full, but the second.... that i keep as empty as possible.
But is what it is... i have just finished my first folding. Next one to go, i hope that it was helpful to someone :)
Edit:
168 point for first work unit. Next (2500 point unit) running already.Last edited by Merlon; 2008-10-14 at 05:29 PM.

Re: Folding@Home
I dunno, Protein folding is a MASSIVE task. For those that don't know:
A protein is a long molecule which is a chain of amino acids. It is made up of potentially thousands and thousands of atoms. To fold a protein you must
1) Calculate the force exerted on each individual atom by a) every other atom and b) its environment (in most cases, water - adding more molecules to the mix)
2) Sum the forces from step 1)
3) Give each atom an acceleration in a direction based on 2)
4) Adjust each atom's speed based on 3)
5) Adjust each atom's position based on 4)
This loop must be redone once per femto (0.000 000 000 000 001) second of simulation time, as that is the vibration rate of a hydrogen bond.
So, yeah...its a lot of work.
(Posting this cos I just....borrowed....the spare CPU time of the servers at work for the team. They are on as user cahs07)

Re: Folding@Home
About a year ago, I ran F@H and got about 600 points with about 60 hours of folding (my CPU was a pretty good one, too.) The other day, nVidia released their new set of CUDA drivers (more on CUDA.) So, after I installed the drivers, I decided to try out the F@H GPU client. I left it on overnight (and increased the fan speed on my graphics card), and I got about 2000 points. This thing is ridiculously fast. I notice a bit more of a performance hit while doing things with F@H in the background, and I have to watch my GPU temps, because they get pretty high, but I would definitely recommend that anyone with a compatible card (GeForce 8 or higher, or Radeon x2000 series or higher) and that wants to contribute to the project to install the GPU client.

Re: Folding@Home
Saw the thread looking for artists, decided to join. I've just downloaded it.
I hope it's not one of these "run as a screensaver" things. People used to send some that would "calculate how much energy you save"... bull, mine would always stay at 0 for the simple reason that when I don't use my computer, I turn it off.
So hopefully, this can run while I'm using my computer. I still need to figure out how to install it properly first (I'm with Ubuntu).
EDIT: Well, I can't use it :( It needs 64bits and I'm only 32. That's a disappointment... I hope something will become available for the likes of me...snif.Last edited by Lissou; 2008-12-09 at 01:22 PM.

Re: Folding@Home
It can run as a screensaver on some systems (not Mac, def Windows; not sure about Linux)
Always turning off your comp will not always save you energy. Example: If I turn off my computer , then come back in 10 minutes and turn it on, I have used more energy than I would have by leaving it on. Not sure about the exact threshold.Folding@Home

Re: Folding@Home
There is a discussion thread dedicated to reasons for running (or not) FAH. The screensaver stuff seems to be a big red herring as indicated by this thread.

Re: Folding@Home
I may as well donate part of my processor time to science.
First unit is 5% complete... a little algebra for an extrapolation and it should finish that 250,000 step unit in about... 32 hours.
These aren't little projects, how much grind does it take other people's machines?

Re: Folding@Home
Sure:
To activate it/ deactivate it go to System Preferences, Folding@Home.
For a general progress overview open the unitinfo.txt file, or open the FAHlog.txt file to view a more detailed progress history. You can find those files in the Folding@home folder that gets installed inside your personal Library folder (the one inside your User Folder), or you could search for the files in spotlight.
The website says a dashboard widget is under development that might provide more information, but I have no clue when or if that will be released.Last edited by Psionic Dog; 2009-02-08 at 08:10 PM.
